Lovely little campsite attached to it just across the road. Lovely cozy pub with fantastic countryside views. Nice clean amenities for campers (been twice). The main thing are the people that run it They bought over gas to use as ours had just ran out for a cuppa in the morning. It was belting it down with a full on thunderstorm, yet he was more than happy to help us. They are a very very friendly and welcoming couple. We did have food in the Summer: a biker's basket. Very yum Will continue to come back regularly to Square and Compass.

Booked accomadtion a year ago through booking.com Last week checked booking for this weekend and seen there was a slight issue. Tried calling venue for over a week and number invalid, sent a number messages through booking.com. Then found on FB and sent a message through messenger. Informed me they closed the venue almost 9 months ago but didnt tell anyone not even booking.com. Money was being taken out of my bank tomorrow to go where I dont know. im due to go there in 2 days. Would have been 5/6 hour drive to find we had no where to go. Good thing I check my booking a good week before. Pretty poor service not telling any guests or booking.com they closed the doors.

I had the misfortune to stumble across the Square and Compass Normanton on Trent whilst my partner and myself were looking at properties in the area, such bad luck. Our visit to this establishment has put me off the place. It looked nice enough, and the staff seemed pleasant enough. However, the issues arose when our meals were served.l ordered a glass of Merlot and a sparkling water. The water was great, the wine to say it was mediocre is an understatement. My partner ordered a mint and pea rissotto with endeme beans and pea shoots. It arrived with no endeme beans or pea shoots to be described by Sandra as bland. I ordered a rare sirloin steak accompanied by Chip's flat mushroom grilled tomatoe onion rings and Cole slaw. What an utter disaster My steak was medium too well and had more than its fair share of gristle, not fat. As an afterthought I think the chef threw some whole peppercorns on it. Untracked and cold, not cooked. The onion rings looked gorgeous but on trying them I discovered uncooked onion and crispy on the outside but runny uncooked batter underneath. The chips had obviously been reheated badly. I think the tomatoe had been briefly introduced to a little heat not nearly enough. The coleslaw was runny and insipid. However the flat mushroom was perfect, compliments to the chef. Whilst eating the young waitress asked us how we were enjoying our meal, and when I gave her my opinion she asked if she could do anything. I told her there was nothing she could do, and that it was not her fault. I love dining out, and if there is an issue with an element of my meal. Not to get it discounted but as constructive criticism. Whilst we were there ,there was only 3 other diners and 2 gentlemen sat at the bar, so they cannot use pressure as an excuse. I just paid my £42.80 bill, and left. Horrendous

Just here for the 1 night on business. 3 chalet type rooms with en-suite. On first looking they looked great, but looking further revealed issues. I was in room 1 called "Pheasant", and it looks like an attempts has been made to do it up, but it fails pretty miserably. Newly tiled bathroom with a large walk in shower - that doesn't drain. I showered on arrival and the whole shower basin filled up with water and spewed over the top flooding the bathroom. It wasn't emptying. The room was freezing with no heating on. The matress was that hard it was like a concrete slab. Where tiles met flooring there were no strips accross the threshold and I kept stubbing my toes on different floor levels. Large cracks in walls and terrible painting looked awful. The wardrobe was barely standing and wobblier than a wobbly thing in wobblesville. Although the porch front door had frosted glass in it, walking across it to the bathroom semi-naked would mean people externally could see everything, this was the same in the bathroom window. No blinds and frosted glass, and whilst showering I couldt have the light on as people externally would see everything. Went to the restaurant for my tea, and complained about the shower not draining and no heating on. Felt like I was speaking to a brick wall with the response I got, but got told they would tell the owner. Ordered the "Pie Night" pie for main and belly pork bites to start. The belly pork bites were plentiful and looked great, but were only lukewarm at best and the fat on the belly pork was very chewy an fatty, not crispy as expected. Sent them back and they came back piping hot, but evidently done in the microwave. The pie arrived with chips although I ordered mash. The chicken and mushroom pie was as dry as the desert, and although I was given a tiny amount of gravy, I asked for more only to be told at exactly 9pm that the kitchen had closed and that chef wouldnt do me more gravy. I was AWFUL. Went back to the room, still no heating on and the shower basin was still full of water. Had a rotten nights sleep as the room was freezing cold. Got up in the morning to a freezing room, but the shower basin had drained but left a black silt residue. Showered again and again the basin wouldnt drain, so bathroom flooded again. As I was loading the car a chap who worked at the place asked me how my experience was and I told him it was terrible. No offer of a refund or anything. Rotten experience.

With permission from the friendly landlady, we parked our motorhome in the car park overnight. Free of charge. We then went in for food & were lucky to be there for Pie Night. £13 for pie and seasonal veg INCLUDING a pint of beer or glass of wine! We were expecting a standard pie with peas, but had an excellent homemade beef cooked in Guinness with Cheddar pie. Seasonal veg was roasted carrots, leeks with cabbage and red cabbage. The meat was so tender and the pastry crumbly. It was an amazing meal. We then had delicious puddings for an extra £6. All in all,I would mark it 11/10. In addition couldn’t fault the service and friendly staff.

Went for Sunday Carvery - 2 meals were produced that looked like they had been sat in an oven keeping warm for hours - disgusting, especially at £13. We back again as it was local to where we were staying (just for a drink) - my partner decided a bowl of chips was safe to order - no it wasn’t, I think they were dragged out of the bin and warmed up - again horrible so dumped those as well.

Visited today for my mum’s birthday, all the way from Mansfield, after a recommendation from a local saying there was a new chef… Wow! Just wow! The Sunday roasts were amazing and each of them (chicken, pork & beef) were tried by at least one member of our party and were outstanding. The meat was cooked to perfection, the vegetables were fresh and tasty, the roasties and Yorkshires were absolutely delicious! We had a variety of the desserts between us and all were heartily enjoyed… my Dad even mentioned the bread pudding was one of the best he’s ever had, which is quite an accolade as that is his go-to pud! Thank you Square & Compass for not only the scrumptious food but also the quality service. Cheers to all! We will be back.

We visited last night, Saturday, for a special celebration and for the first time in quite a while found it disappointing. We decided to sit near the bar, as we often do, for a drink before our meal. One person at the bar consistently and loudly did nothing but F and blind. The bar person ignored this and when we mentioned it to her, she said ‘it does get like that sometimes’. We were happy when we were out of the way and at our table. We ordered two starters and main. We sat for some time and then were brought out our mains. We mentioned the starters and the waitress Lucy was very apologetic and took them back. We decided not to have them warmed up and told them to skip the starters. The chef was very sorry and offered to pay for our deserts. The mains were okay and my wife enjoyed her bean burger very much. After being told the toffee pudding was off the menu we ordered a crumble to share. Lucy again came out to apologise that this was off the menu too. I chose a cheesecake and asked for cream. This came and was lovely but had no cream. We like to have a coffee after a meal but we’re not offered this so went to the bar to ask for a bill. I didn’t get a billBut was told the soups had not been charged and desert was free. It would have been nice to be asked if the meal was okay? After been on a fast for two weeks and out celebrating, it left the night a little flat. This is unusual for the Square. Lucy and the chef were very sorry and recovered the night. Perhaps we will try again when the new menu is on and the chef settled.

He thoroughly enjoyed them and he also tied a couple of their real ales. Pauline was very attentive and nothing was any trouble. A few locals were in and their friendliness added to the warm atmosphere. We would love to come back and probably stay next time, so that I can try the real ales too without driving! Don’t go on a Sunday night though as they stop serving at 4 (and who can blame them after a full on roast lunch) but that said, we were very kindly given a bowl of roast potatoes in the evening with our drinks, to keep us going and very scrumpy they were too,

As locals we visit here almost every week. The food is excellent. There is a main menu and the 'specials' change weekly. All meals are freshly cooked by the landlady Jane. This pub and restaurant should be so much busier with the quality of food it serves. On the odd occasion we have ventured out the village we wonder why we have bothered! If you want your meal in 5 minutes then you need to go to McDonalds but home cooked food does mean a little wait - gives you time to warm up by the fire - but it is so worth the wait. I always like to book. Please support our local pub and mention this pub to your friends as one to visit for great food and beer

I briefly stayed at The Square and Compass after a nearby business project was extended and I needed a room at short notice. The area the pub is based in is a nice quite little village, which compliments it well. Firstly I arrived earlier than I had mentioned on the form, however this was no issue for the Owner Jane and after apologizing for being early she promptly showed me to the side annex in which I would be staying. The room itself was spacious and well decorated with lovely sheets and a minimalist style which suited me just fine, with the en suite bathroom also being well decorated and clean. There is ample space for multiple bags in a large wardrobe and plenty of drawers. Also in the room was reliable broadband (which is essential for my work) and a good sized TV for entertainment.I wondered over to the pub at around 19:30 for dinner and was greeted by a lovely looking girl behind the bar (I think her name was Jenna) that was took my order of the Cajun Chicken burger, which was absolutely fantastic. The decor of the pub itself is reminiscent of how a traditional pub should be, with low beams, soft lighting, comfortable seating and even a cat or two around that added to the character of the place. After a great night sleep in a comfortable bed (note* I could hear the guest in the room next door fairly clearly through the wall, guessing fairly thin plasterboard, which wasn't an issue as they were not being loud but could cause complaint from other future guests if loudness was an issue - I slept soundly without complaint) I went down for breakfast in the morning and was greeted by Jane again who proceeded to take my order for the Full English which was again, well cooked. The checkout was then fairly quick and all wrapped up with a small VAT receipt. In summary I would happily recommend this pub and room to anybody, with its exceptional food, well presented and comfortable rooms and lovely service of Jane and Jenna, it is exactly what was needed after a frustrating day on a project.

They provided a service that was above our expectations, providing both food of excellent quality and a welcoming venue. The food and arrangements were exactly as we requested, the staff both behind the bar and helping with the catering were polite and extremely efficient. All the food was beautifully prepared and very fresh, so nice in fact a large group of us returned the next day for Sunday lunch that was just as great. I must say that I would not have change a thing and that it is because of all the hard work of Jane, Ian and their team that we definitely had a wedding day to remember. Thank you all. You will be seeing us very soon.

Nice welcoming pub, relaxing surroundings, nice to see several real ales on hand pumps, after getting drinks at the bar, we sere seated by the lovely waiter George, who couldn't do enough for us, the meal arrived, I had a homemade chicken Kiev with salad and homecut chips, the portion was generous but not too large, it was delicious. My wife had the special of Seabass on Kachumber salad , Salsa Verdi , and fresh straw potatoes, which complimented the delicately cooked fish beautifully, again an excellent meal. I recommend the Square & compass for its food ,wide choice of real ales Thankyou we will return.

Despite being fairly local we had never tried the pub before so have no experience of the way it was run previously. The new management are certainly trying to make the place a nice place to eat and drink, they seem to be making the best of the pub given that they are not the owners of the building so are obviously limited in respect of any structural changes. That said that the pub has a nice layout with a welcoming log fire as well as a chubby pub cat (Po). We opted for a traditional Sunday lunch and although there is a large I must say that he standard beat both me and my partner. My beef was nicely cooked as was the pork she opted for all accompanied by seasonal veg and a delicious gravy plus a nice soggy bottomed (as they should be) Yorkshire! Drinks wise there was a selection of real ale and I opted for the Doombar which is a favourite of mine. We ate in the restaurant section which was nicely set out although if we wished we could have eaten in the less formal bar area. Service was efficient and staff were very smart and polite, all good. We will be visiting again soon and will probably being trying the evening menus, yum.

Under new management since mid 2015 and they're obviously trying hard, but still some way to go. A wide range of beer choices promised by the pumps wasn't delivered in reality as many were unavailable and what we had was average. The food was humble pub grub via freezer, microwave and deep fryer, albeit at a responsible price, but the Square & Compass has some progress to be made to lure us back again.

We always visit the Square on Boxing Day but this year was special. Jane and Ian provided an outstanding breakfast worthy of any 5* hotel we have ever stayed in. The service by George was great too, very professional. Guess where we will be New Year's Eve. A meal and a party night out. Just need the finishing touch of a itemised bill.

We needed a place to stay after a family wedding and I booked rooms 1 & 2 for a Saturday night. I rang to check if we could access the rooms before the 1pm wedding, to travel first and get changed, and the response was "No problem" from Jane.By the time the wedding day arrived, my 21 year old son, who had previously been unable to attend, travelled with us. I asked if it was possible for him to sleep on the floor in our room, just for somewhere to sleep.....Ian & Jane, the proprietors wouldn't have it.....Jane arranged for a camp bed (at little extra cost) which was in our room before we arrived back later that evening. Excellent customer service and much appreciated. Ian also gave me a number for a local taxi if required for our journey back. The full English breakfasts served in the morning were spot on and if we are ever in the area again we'd be happy to stay. It's great, simple accommodation with clean rooms and a homely pub with a warm log fire for a reasonable price. Exactly fit for purpose and we thank you!

We were due to stay here for a friend's wedding locally for 3 nights. We arrived and.... well, the service was friendly. And abrupt. Upon arrival, we were shown to the room. (Room 2 btw) Take that literally. A room, with a boxy shower, wardrobe but no side tables, and no room to put the camp bed which we had ordered for our little one and wasn't available yet, and also there were no towels ready. After a 3 hour drive and an irate wife and child, this wasn't very impressive. I went to the bar to complain about the lack of bed, at which point my wife went to use the loo, and was put off her time there by the 5 dead flies watching her from below and the windowsill. Grubby marks, stains on the bedsheets, badly fitting flooring so you were moving the slats about when you walked... Would lose a tie barefoot..... Etc etc.And the kids play park that looked so nice from the pictures, no doubt was nice when new, but has faded and deteriorated such that half the equipment is either knackered or missing. The grass was also rather long which meant upon our attempted escape, we got the wheels of our suitcase caught up in the length...And then when I went to complain.... Well.... The nights fee was demanded and we were waved on. I can only imagine that this is their business model.....I would have argued the toss with them, but I just wanted out, it was not what I would expect from a professional outfit. Next time, a proper hotel will be used.

My husband and I found this little gem a few months ago when we were turned away by other local pubs who were not dog friendly . The pub has a very friendly atmosphere including a real log fire we have always been made to feel very welcome by Sally and Neil. Good wholesome food is avilable which is cooked to order by Neil who also offered us an opportunity to try samples of different dishes that were on the menu like Duck with Plum and Ginger and Lamb Corriader Curry. These were not dishes my husband would usually choose but he was pleasantly surprised and thought both dishes were delicious especially the Duck which has now my husbands firm favourite! We have now become regular visitors thanks Neil and Sally

Ate here last Saturday evening, i knew this pub had been closed down for several years and reopened almost 12 months ago so didn't know what to expect. We were the second party to arrive and after a short wait at the bar were told they had no real ales as they had been let down by their supplier. The Chef I guess is the landlord with his wife behind the bar and front of house. The first thing we were told is that he was being mentored by Jamie Oliver and that because the food is cooked to order there would be a 40 minute wait so we expected something quite special with good locally supplied fresh food. Reading the menu we noticed there were no starters and the main choices were limited, no steaks, no chicken dishes, no salads, the only fish dish is the normal fish & chips in batter, in fact it was a very basic pub chain food menu. They were both very friendly with the chef popping out of his kitchen on several occasions to tell us how big certain dishes would be and would that be alright, also to tell us how the belly pork would be cooked with a twist from the famous Jamie, in fairness we would have been happier if he had stayed in the kitchen and just got on with our food. Because of the wait and there being no real ale we ordered a bottle of red wine although there was no wine list and just two choices behind the bar. It was Spanish and was alright but basic, however when in Asda 2 days later I was shocked to see the same bottle of wine on their shelf for £3.50????? The kids in our party ordered the Toad in the Hole so again understanding the Jamie connection we were more that surprised to see, what looked like an Aunt Bessie Yorkshire pudding with two sausages placed in them, although the kids said it was nice we could have stayed at home and given them this in a lot less that 40 minutes. The Ribs came out and looked good, the Belly Pork came out and looked not so interesting and the Steak and Guinness Pie came out and I was very surprised to see just a slice from a large pie, (Cooked to Order?) The tip of the pie was rock hard and had either been in the oven far to long or had been hanging around for some time, The Belly Pork was cut into small pieces about an inch long with some crackling on the side (This is the way Jamie does it???) The Ribs started off alright but a large part was just fat so had to be discarded, there was no fresh vegetables with any of the meals most had what looked to be Aunt Bessie's oven chips. We couldn't see a sweet menu but decided it would be better to just go home and have a biscuit or something rather that risk a sweet let down. If Jamie is involved with this place, I am more than surprised and think he should eat there with his family and see what he gets. Others on this site say that reviewers should make there experiences known to the staff at the time well this is confrontational and I do not think this chef/landlord would take my comments very well in person so sorry for that. This is meant as a learning curve for the owners of this pub to try and stop another country pub from closing down again, you live in the middle of the Nottinghamshire country side with fresh food everywhere and several micro breweries on your doorstep please get a grip!

I just want to reiterate what my daughter has already posted, we paid our very first visit to the Square & Compass on Sunday night, for a BBQ, we arrived when it was very quiet and we thought we had missed out, how wrong we were!! The landlord made us extremely welcome and said that although their family BBQ had finished earlier we could still eat. The landlady came outside to us and said she would happily relight the BBQ, the food was amazing and so much of it, and it didn't take very long to come out. It was the friendliest pub we have ever been in and we will definitely be going back. What a gem!!!

The Square and Compasses has had a chequered history, with around five managers in as many years. Neil and Sally are the latest to take on the challenge, and they seem to have the knack of delivering what others have not quite been able to, most importantly gaining some freedom from the tyranny of being tied to one brewery's ales. We've been just a couple of times recently, but the welcome has always been excellent, and the food even better! They have a reasonably standard pub menu with the staples, but also some more exciting ideas on their specials board. Neil's chips are unbelievable - large and chunky, with soft centres and crispy outsides... Well-behaved dogs are welcome in the bar area and there is a separate 'formal' dining area away from the main drinking area. Children's playground outside and plenty of parking. To encourage the locals to try their food and the new range of items, Neil has been putting on some events with free buffets - but even paying the regular prices isn't going to break the bank.If you've been here before, it's well worth trying again under the new management. Most food is also available as a takeaway, which is helpful!

I ordered the Thursday night special, a choice of sirloin or rump steak, for two people served with a bottle of wine , all for £25. we chose the rump which was mature in flavour and very succulent ! This came on a wooden platter, served with homemade chunky chips which came in a pail, these were filling! also there were homemade battered onion rings, and sauteed mushrooms. A little rocket salad with a homemade dressing complimented the plate. A very tasty meal for which we will return. The Square is a lovely country pub serving several local real ales , the staff were polite , helpful and knowlegeable about the food and ale served .

Visited here as it was the last spoons to be visited in the Nottingham area having visited the rest.Staff were polite and efficient and friendly and helpful. The good point is the toilets are on the ground floor which is a rarety as most are only accessible via stairs apart from accessible toilet. The big drawback is getting to this spoons from the railway station as bus service is virtually non existent.
