Spy Bar & Lounge in Newcastle upon Tyne

Came here for a drink on the weekend when I was up visiting my friends. Spy bar had a great vibe and great DJ. Staff are friendly and helpful. Will defiantly be returning when I come back to visit.

Had a booking here which was paid for by deposit and we walked outside for some fresh air as was incredibly hot inside. When we tried coming back in both the bouncer and manager refused our entry advising we must wait in the long queue. We tried explaining we had a table booked but we were not listened to at all. Honestly terrible customer service and pretty rude service considering we had paid money upfront for the deposit etc. I wouldn't recommend based on our experience.

Table reserved on Sunday evening. Sat at our table with no problems. All the planning until the date was completely perfect. The welcome whilst we were there however, was very disappointing. Went outside for a cigarette and stepped onto the pavement outside the bar. On our way back in we were told we would have to wait in the walk in queue. Tried to explain to both the manager and the bouncer that I had a reservation inside that I'd paid a deposit for, and that I was just on my way back in. I tried to show them my booking reference and multiple emails I had with the business but again I was told I was ignorant and wasn't listening to the both of them, as they also ignored my response and reasoning. Quite an ironic situation to be in. Was expecting much better from the establishment inside but was left feeling belittled.

A really good bar. Staff have great customer service. Dart board, multiple tvs for sport. Haven't ordered food but heard it's great. Nice pints. One of the best bars on osborne road. Bathrooms in good condition.

Was just up for a weekend but this place was buzzing.

The service is absolutely ridiculous delivered by staff! Came in at 22:15 for some drinks, been served by a tall lad, dark hair, kinda round face, not smiling or anything, been asked rude what we want, I asked for 2 pints a coke and pint a Heineken, he absolutely made the pint full of ice, I asked if he could take some out and he said “ what? From that? Can’t do it anymore! “ with a rude voice. That’s not the service, I’m working in a bar/restaurant as well, and even how bad my day was I don’t speak with customers like that! And then obviously I asked one more time if I could get less ice because I knew he could just grab a spoon and take some out! He aggressively took the pints away and bin the drinks from it and made another one. And then he also asked rude if we gonna pay which of course that what we were intended to do but the way he spoke and addressed is just ridiculous! Never come back here! First time and last!

Terrible customer experience. I tried to order some food and the bar staff were incredibly rude and unhelpful. Very unprofessional. Bar staff started arguing with me as I did not initially know my table number. Really rude staff. Will never come again.

Very quiet daytime unless the students are out in force. Ok though.

Great value for money as was "Wing day," today (Wednesday), as is Friday. 40p per chicken wing 🍗 Got 3 X 5 wings, with 3 different marinades. Spicey, Salt & Pepper, and BBQ.. all very nice 👍 and a generous portion of fries and coleslaw. Drinks prices reasonable and always offers on. Staff are spot on 🫶

Ordered bacon cheese burger for the hubby that he totally enjoyed. I ordered cheesyburger chips which came pretty cold. Which they rectified with no qwarm and totally delish...

Great bar to chat (some have music way too loud) and watch the match. Bar staff always friendly and usually let you know what drinks are on offer/save u money. Good selection of beers and spirits. It's very student populated but always a nice atmosphere.

Great experience there, so many screens to watch football on, great food options and friendly staff. Great discounts throughout the week too! Definitely worth a visit.

Had the weekend at Carlton Hotel and its been great. Good food and the service was very good. Would definitely stay there again.

This was a terrible experience from start to finish, lack lustre service and and 1hr 30 minute wait for mid food. They brought us TWO gooey louies instead of what we needed. Disasterclass!

Food - average, price - good on a Tuesday wouldn’t pay it the other 6 days. Wait times - shocking. Just go to Brack Burger instead.

Absolute dump. 1hr20min wait for a burger. Staff were shocking, smells like a rotting corpse, with music to match.

Went in and was on a Wednesday lunch time, was quiet, missed Tuesday half price deal sadly but still the burgers and chicken are well worth it. 💯 % will go again.

The wait for food a joke. Told there would be a very large table to arrive before arrival wait times we’re astronomical and food not sent out, also fannied on trying to sort the issue made to believe we were stealing.

Female bar staff with ginger shoulder length hair was incredibly rude, made us feel like everything was too much of a hassle for her, very unfriendly.

The staff are atrocious. We ordered four burgers between two groups. The first two burgers arrived after 40 minutes. A third arrived 20 minutes after the first ones and the final burger simply didn’t arrive. When we asked about the final burger we were treated with an under the breathe whisper of ‘his burger isn’t coming’ and then when everyone had finished eating and our dishes were getting cleared we again asked about the final burger and were told ‘we don’t really do refunds here’. The bar staff Playing on their phones whilst the bar was busy. Snobby comments and faces pulled whilst asking for refund. Where is the goeey Louie burger ?

Great food, great prices lovely staff

Hi guys, Here now doing my review . no pictures yet but looks like a good place to visit. Bar staff friendly. Also advised bar staff that management are excellent. And also in same conversation that the street has lot's of other choices. This place in co -attached to a the Carlton Hotel. Outdoor seating available with outdoor coverage for the great weather we are experiencing at the moment. Right opposite is a Waitrose store.

Went in with a few mates for a couple of drinks ended up staying till close. They had a really good DJ on and all the drinks were amazing. Staff friendly and fun. 10/10 would recommend to everyone

Always have great deals on meaning you can have a fun night without blowing the bank. Food tasted lovely and the music was on point, will definitely be back!

Moved to jesmond and it’s now my all time favourite bar! Student deals are great and just an all round good vibe

I frequently visit spy bar as they have unbeatable deals and friendly staff. However I have noticed that if you go past a certain time in the evening it is almost impossible to hear a conversation between the people on my table. I understand they are trying to create a fun atmosphere but the music is far too loud and is driving a lot of customers away, especially as it is a bar and people are sat down eating not dancing as they would in a club.

I just want to shout out Amy who works on the bar who noticed when I was being harassed by homophobic guys, she straight away dealt with it, and made me feel so safe and supported and I really appreciated it. It meant I was able to continue enjoying my night and it genuinely means so much. I’m so grateful to her for being so kind - the world needs more Amy’s! I will definitely be back to Spy Bar from tonight’s experience, it’s so nice to visit a venue that genuinely cares for and makes a safe space for the LGBTQ+ Community! Also the bar has a great atmosphere lovely food, what more could you want!

Foods grim, burger van quality at best.

The food at spy bar is exceptional, by far the best burger on Osbourne road! As a vegan, I would probably go as far to say the buffalo oumph is the best vegan burger in Newcastle! My meat eating friend really enjoyed the hot chick too! The staff are very friendly and welcoming and the overall environment is amazing. Love this place! Highly recommend!

Came down with the football team and were very well looked after. Discounted drinks and top tier scran. Quality staff and great service. Best place to go for any societies and socials.

Lively bar with great atmosphere. Friendly staff and reasonable prices. Wet on Freshers week, it was filled with loads of fun loving Friendly students. Recommended.

Disappointed, we were made to feel really unwelcome by the staff in the bar area, the friends we were with had booked a table to celebrate a birthday. When we arrived the lead party member asked one of the staff who we needed to talk too regards our booking, she simply pointed out a young man, no explanation to who he was. When we managed to ask him about our table he turned his back on us, we had to wait until he came back and ask again. The fun did not stop there, one of our party had to visit the little boys room, dirty, run down no soap or hand sanitiser was available. Overall this wasn't the best experience, putting it mildly I think we did not fit in with the customer base they look to attract.

Absolutely the best burger I've ever experienced.

Found spy during a trip to Newcastle whilst doing a road trip of the north. Had a class time, never had to wait more than a few minutes to be attended to. Food was perfect and we could not have asked for more. Staff were really friendly and professional

Had a fab experience here. Fancied a quick bite to eat and a couple of drinks on a short visit to Newcastle. This was satisfied and more. The burgers are to DIE for. The staff were so lovely and attentive, also really helped with food & drink suggestions. Could not reccomended more!

The Best bar in jesmond. Extremely fast service and friendly staff who made our visit extremely enjoyable. I would recommend to anyone who’s looking for a good time.

Popped in for drinks with the girls in Jesmond, 50% off with the Snapsaver app so ordered a gorgeous bottle of white Zinfandel and it was stunning. Music was great, atmosphere was the best we have had on our day drinks in Jesmond so will be staying for a few more drinks no doubt. Customer service impeccable and spoke with the manager he was lovely too! Would totally recommend to boom in advance or pop in! Wasn’t too busy for a Saturday night after the races but still a vibe with table service and football on the TV if that’s your thing ☺️

Great for sunny afternoons as the outdoor seating has sun until late on summer evenings! The burgers are nice and the atmosphere is lively, will visit again!

Such great service from Rosie. We had other servers earlier on who were adequate but Rosie went above and beyond to meet our beverage needs and provide great service. I would genuinely come back over and over thanks to her.

All of the staff are very professional, welcoming and couldn't do enough for us.The manager himself came out to ask the tables if they needed anything. He was very attentive and took an interest in the customer's experience. Fantastic array of drinks and the loaded fries were amazing.

Such a great experience with very friendly staff especially Lucy who made us feel so comfortable. We also met the general manager Matt who was so lovely and came to chat to us to ensure we were enjoying our night which made the experience a lot more personal. All in all a great bar 100% recommend.

What a superb Bar.It wasn’t the best weather for sitting outside however the Food, Drink and absolutely fantastic service was seconds to none.I can’t thank the Spy Bar Staff enough for making us feel welcome on a wet night, hopefully the next time we are there is better weather and the sun shines when we enjoy the drinks and great service.

Spy bar is by far my favourite bar on Osbourne road. The staff are really attentive and really go above and beyond to ensure your visit is a good one. The food is amazing and drinks range is so good - mango ciroc is my new go to!

Arrived here to a great response from the door staff, Aaron....seated in adequate manor in a pleasant sunny afternoon seat. To be served by Lauren, very attentive and friendly girl, never saw us without a drink! The manager, Matt, passed by and acknowledged us having a great time. What a great afternoon! I have to say the only thing that keeps me coming back to this place is Gru and his absolutely fantastic team of staff! (particularly Steven, Aaron, and James) I have to say, I have no idea is he is even called Gru but the resemblance to Gru from despicable me is uncanny. I have no idea if it is the scarf or those pointy shoes, but boy is unmatched! Keep up the good work Gru! See you later for a pint x

My favourite part about this establishment is the general manager, we like to call him Gru (from Despicable Me). Whether it’s the skinny black jeans or the long thin feet, you’re guaranteed to have a good time here! Much like Gru, he appears hard and stern on the outside, but when you get to know him, he’s a really nice and great guy. Highly recommend!

Me and my husband had booked this bar for our 1 year anniversary, paying a £20 deposit for our table which has not been refunded . Although not informed before, upon arrival they tried to state it was the law that both of us had to have the NHS track and trace app which it is not as we live together. However I had not taken my phone with me, due to the fact I was with my husband and knew he had the app. The manner the bouncers spoke to me in was HORRENDOUS, belittling me when I questioned them: Simply asking why I need it myself when we live together? To be replied with “No app no entry” sniggered at me. My husband requested to talk to the manager who also spoke to us in a disrespectful manner: As we rightfully questioned and suggested that manually recording our details may be a solution. This has not only ruined my night but ultimately my first anniversary with my husband, for the sake of the bouncers entertainment. Coronavirus is stressful enough for us all and we are all trying to adapt to the rapidly changing situation, tonight was meant to be an occasion to forget that, yet the inconsiderate bouncers have ruined that. DO NOT VISIT HERE OR WASTE YOUR MONEY.

Came up to Newcastle for a few nights with my significant other and decided to meet up with some friends and book Spy Bar for our very last night before Thursday’s national lockdown. We booked on Sunday, and firstly had great trouble calling up to pay a frankly ridiculous £20 deposit that we were supposedly going to get back in drinks once there. After trying to call for two days, we finally got through to a rude member of staff who quite hurriedly booked us in. Upon arrival at our booking, we encountered two apparent ‘bouncers’ who decided to exert in the most tyrannical way possible, that just because my wife did not have the NHS app, we were not allowed entry. After disputing this for quite some time, and despite us quite obviously coming from the same household and thus not requiring two separate NHS entries, we were turned away by the supposed ‘manager’, who acted no less petulantly than the bouncers at the door. Not only this, but we were told that we could not get our £20 deposit back, as we did not claim them back in drinks (of course at no fault of our own). An absolutely dreadful experience to say the very least, and I can only presume not only for us. Tables were not being wiped down, and COVID guidelines clearly not adhered to, which seemed quite ironic considering we were getting turned away for apparently not adhering to them either, despite us, and even I’m sure the staff at the institution, knowing that even clearly wasn’t the case. We wanted to celebrate a night out in a wonderful city for the last night before lockdown, but apparently if the staff at this bar can’t celebrate tonight, then you can’t either.

Pre-booked a table of six for £20, was given a table outside in the pouring and freezing cold. Table service poor split my drink.

Went in tonight with my husband, son his wife and a few of his friends, waited 40mins for service and then finally got served, gave them our order she came back 15mins later for payment we paid then she came back to double check the order, then still waiting for a drink while other people are being served and got drinks and food, soooooo finally got our drinks but missing two drinks the manager or whomever he was came over and said he can't have 8 people sitting together so this was our last and final drink that's cool but maybe your staff could have told us before taking orders for 8 drinks and also didn't tell us there was empty tables inside where we could have sat on two tables clearly we didn't fit the clientele they want. The owners want to have a look into the attitudes of the bar management are terrible

So i had a table reserved for a staturday night, i had to pay £20 to reserve a table i had a couple to drink beforehand so i understand why the bouncers were hesitant to let me in. I was rejected from taking the reserved table aswell as losing the £20 reserved on the table due to suspicion that i had taken something. I have no problem that i was rejected from entering the bar however, to keep the £20 reserve full well knowing they will fill the table with other guests is upsetting and disheartening for spy bars reputation.

Naughty selection of burgers, had the Bacon Deluxe and in an absolute bait hole now. Spot on service from Matt and the rest of the team!
