It has been a while since I came to this special Indian restaurant a well kept hidden gem! A pre- Tyson v Usyk boxing match. The owner Zu and his staff continues to provide a first class food and beverage hospitality. I had the lamb phall, Hayley had the lamb madras and Lula the Tandoori chicken. Thank you for your attention.

This was a special occasion as it was our wedding anniversary. We had been before on several occasions and had enjoyed the food so we thought it would be good. We were NOT disappointed!! It was excellent and the service was excellent too, so friendly and helpful, we couldn’t have asked for more to make our evening special. Thank you 🙏

Went to the restaurant on New Year’s Eve with a group of friends. The table hadn’t been prepared, the waiter was abrupt. I had to ask for cutlery that was just put in a pile on the table. When the mains arrived one of the mains was wrong. Then at 2300 hours we were asked to leave because they shut at 2200 hours. Strange when we didn’t sit down until 2100 hours. Nice meal but won’t be coming back again on a New Years Eve

Seems like there is a hate campaign going on with these recent reviews. The food and service in this restaurant is as amazing as ever and I would suggest that these last few reviews are untrue. I've been coming here for 15 years and I'm shocked at what I have read here. It's simply not true. Might have something to do with the fact that they've recently added pizzas and burgers to their menu and created more competition with other local established takeaways. Their Indian food, as always, delicious. If ore those hate reviews because that's all that thy are.

Really great meal tonight. Great service and tasty food. So good to be back. Can honestly say we had the best chicken chat we have ever had. Lovely people so pleased to support this restaurant even if we had to drive from Formby. Great guy we knew from The Jewel in the Crown Restaurant. Good luck to the young waiter who said he was a student . Hope you are successful at your studies.

Been many a time & enjoyed a meal but last night was the pits. Popadoms were stale then when the mixed starter arrived. We nearly fell off our chairs £17 essentially for a portion of food my 5 year old would eat not 4 adults. When challenged by one of our group the attitude of the staff stunk. “That’s how we do it” - good luck sunshine we’re off!! We paid up & left. Can promise we’ll not be going back. At £17 I’d be wearing a COVID mask to hide my identity too!!

I walked in thinking it was going to be amazing . I was wrong ! first thing first the chicken was red raw I was dead unsure after that . My masala came out the first thing i saw was a hair . shocking ! Then they tried to charge is 100 pounds for it . Luckily we complained and they gave us it half price . I would not recommend coming here .

Three generations of my family have been coming to this restaurant for well in excess of 25 years and we have NEVER experienced such a dreadful decline in customer service. We are gutted as we have so many good memories of coming here, but I am afraid the attitude of the manager and staff is nothing short of dreadful. I brought my family for an early dinner on Saturday evening. The restaurant was almost empty and we were the only people on the right hand side of the restaurant after another couple left very shortly after we arrived. The waiter brought over some plates and put them down at the end of the table and told us "I am not reaching across you". Sounds and IS perfectly acceptable (COVID19!), but you'd have to have 'been there' to see how it was done. ok - move on! We always order more onion salad to go with the poppadoms and this visit was no different. We all noticed the attitude was definitely one of "Really? You want more?", but nothing so bad that we felt there was a big problem. We always say 'please and thank you' yet the drinks, poppadoms and replacement onion salad were all delivered and placed on the table without any "you're welcome" or "here you are" - nothing. We asked if we could order some starters with after the poppadoms as we were hungry and wanted more time to look what we wanted for main course. The waiter took the order (again very unwelcoming with any answers to Qs we had about the starters), but, fine. We finished the order and he asked what we wanted for main course. We told him, again, that we would decide either during the time we waited for the starters or after the starters, as we always do wherever we go. Then we ran into a problem! The waiter told us we are not allowed to order starters separately from the main course. Totally perplexed, and perhaps thinking we've misheard him, we asked again and why. We were told "it's the rule Sir" and "it's how we like to do it". Long story short, still in disbelief, we tried to understand and were told "you can order now and ask for a delay of anytime you want but the kitchen have to know what you want now". Sorry - but this did not make any sense and especially given that the place was almost empty. My eldest son and wife also tried to understand but he keep repeating it was "how they do things and what is our problem with it?" We said we'd skip starters and think again about main course. The manager passed by and so we asked for a quiet word and honestly thought it would be a misunderstanding. How wrong we were! He was even worse and whilst not aggressive, he was one of the rudest people I've ever come across. He kept talking over us, repeating the same thing again asking "why don't you do it out way" "What is your problem in doing it how we do it" and, most frustrating of all, could only tell us that the reason it had to be this was because "it was easier for them". Unbelievable. An empty restaurant and they want "ease of work" to come before a reasonable request to order main courses separately. In total frustration we tried again to explain that this was unreasonable, how long we've been coming to the restaurant and that, surely, we would not have to forgo starters just because "it is easier" for them. But, yes, that was indeed the situation! We told him that if there could not be a compromise that we'd leave and go elsewhere; he was happy. We were not rude, didn't shout or insult anyone, but, I'll be honest, it was one of the most frustrating restaurant experiences ever. We paid the bill, expressed our disgust in either (a) their inability to offer ANY flexibility to their rules or (b) that they do not trust us to order main courses after a starter. We left and went elsewhere to another restaurant and needless to say we will never return under the current management. The manager refused to share the owners details and so we will write to the restaurant and the owners via official company sources in the hope of some common sense and an apology. Gutted.

Coming to this Indian for 20 years, usually lovely service and lovely food, but we had not been for some time due to Coronavirus. Unfortunately, our experience this time was not great; service was terrible, the manager was rude and he refused my family service because we requested to order our starter and main course separately. From start to finish the service was hostile and unwelcoming. The waiter who seated us said nothing, he merely pointed at our table. A new waiter then came over to give us some plates, put them on the table and said “I’m not leaning over you (to give us our plates)” - without explanation or niceties or offer of taking our drinks order, he walked away. After some time we had to wave over a waiter to take our drinks, who seemed very bothered by us, like we were interrupting his busy day. At this point we have noticed the overall demeanour of the staff was exceptionally poor. But we were willing to put this down to a bad day or maybe even just a bad start. However, the worst was yet to come. Unwilling to let the bad start affect our mood, we planned to order some starters; and then see if we want anything more; before we go on to main course. This was apparently unacceptable to our waiter, with no explanation he walks away refusing to take our order. After getting the managers attention - who originally told us he is busy and we should wait for him to be free. When he finally comes over, he tells us not to be difficult and listen to his staff, we begin to explain our preference for having our starter first, then taking a break before taking our main course. This was once again, unacceptable. We explained that we have been coming to this place for many years, and the manager says that this is irrelevant he is here now and doesn’t remember us. Well not going to lie, that was disappointing - because we had been loyal customers for a long time, and though he may be new - we were not. After accepting once more that things were not ideal, the manager came back over to my family and showed us there official policy and pointed to the clause saying “the manager refrains the right to refuse service” - utterly shocked. Very disappointed, because we loved going to this place. However, we will leave you (the readers of this review) with a piece of good news. As a result of the poor service we received at the Spice of Bengal, we headed to the Bombay Blussi, 5 minutes away (in Birkdale) which gave us a phenomenal experience, great food, great service and great location! So rest assured - our night was saved - and we would highly recommend any readers of this post to go there instead, as we will be doing in the future!

So disappointed with a take away I received during the COVID 19 shutdown. The onion bhajis tasted like they were days old, the different curry’s ordered were bland and tasteless. Having eaten at this restaurant a few times in the past the food was very good. Don’t know what’s happened for it to be so bad. Should have taken it back for a refund but by the time you get the food home, open it up etc you can’t be bothered with the hassle of going back and complaining. Simpler to give it a wide berth in future, which I will do.

An ‘old-fashioned’ Indian restaurant in Ainsdale, that comes with all the trimmings of sub-continentally inflected music, little cosy booths for privacy, the right smells and rituals, so one knows exactly what’s going to happen. And what happens is that friendly staff coincide with a traditional menu, and very nice food, well, just as you had already expected. So this is not fusion or street food and while some more extravagance on the menu would also work well (like real Indian cheese: paneer), especially for the returning punter, we are at least blessed with the avoidance of all the hipster side effects of sub-atomically sized portions and astronomical prices. So, it’s a great restaurant that does what it says on the tin: good food at fair prices, with nice staff who don’t pester you. Overall homely and soothing.

We are so lucky to have this fantastic restaurant in our village, and in walking distance from our home. We have been going here for many years and we have NEVER been disappointed. Sometimes we eat in and sometimes we get takeaway: either way the food is excellent. Everything is so clean and crisp, lovely lean meat, fresh sauces, crisp salads. The crockery and cutlery is spotless, and the food is always hot and fresh. The staff are all so friendly and so caring, nothing is too much trouble. We recently celebrated a family birthday and we did a very large takeaway order. Shortly after I had made the order, they rang me back just to double-check exactly what my young nephew wanted on his chicken kebab: he wanted it plain and the staff just wanted to make sure they got it right. They got EVERYTHING right despite the huge size of the order. I took chocolates in the next day to say 'thank you' to all the staff.Thank you guys, you are all fantastic. Fondest wishes,Jackie (see you soon !!)

We booked a table for Christmas Eve for three people. We then tried to book for an extra person but they said they were too full. We arrived at the restaurant and were seated at a table set up for 4 people. So we could have had 4 after all? ? We then watched as people who had no reservations were seated (we were near the door and could hear them being asked if they had reservations). The food was the most unauthentic we have ever had. We ordered our curries medium, expecting a bit of hotness but all we could taste was sickly sweet sauces. The tikka Masala tasted like chicken in tomato soup with a few spoons of sugar added and the korma was just a weird tasting sweet sauce. The great reviews for this place are lies or the people who wrote them have no idea what these dishes are supposed to taste like.

Won't try again which is a shame as some of the reviews suggest its a good place to eat but I'm of the mind that if service doesn't exist when I work hard for my money so don't like giving it away to people who think just pay and go which is the feeling I got. Must state this was for takeaway so may be different if eating in as they want to create the right impression but business is business and a five pound order should be treated as much as a thousand pound order my order came to £40 something pounds as it was for family two adults and three children none yet teens so none of the food was eaten just put in the bin kids didn't like aand we couldn't eat it either.

Having ordered and received our drinks promptly, we were given time to study the menu, we ordered pappadoms, chutneys, an onion bhaji and a seekh kebab for starters. The onion bhaji for my partner was very nice and light. My seekh kebab was very tasty and not too spicy. The onion bhaji came in FOUR pieces. For mains, my partner chose Lamb Tikka Tava - her original choice of Tatul was not now available, but still on the menu. I choose Chicken Tikka Kerala. My Kerala came with a sauce. Both mains were of ample proportion, The Tava was thoroughly enjoyed, had loads of flavour and was correctly described as medium strength. My Kerala needed the separate sauce, was tasty and again correctly described as slightly hot. Pilau rice, with both meals was light and fluffy.I would have no hesitation in recommending you to visit The Spice of Bengal.

Was having a long weekend away at the shocking Pontins and needed decent food we came across this restaurant on the Saturday night, it was quite busy and we had not booked but they soon found us a table, Party of 4. The food is gorgeous, and the services is brilliant. Also we found that it was reasonably prices, we had a bottle of house wine, 5 soft drinks then poppadum starters, 4 main meals with rice and 2 nan breads and it was £65 which I thought was really good, would recommend anyone to try it.

My partner and myself went into this restaurant and the food was excellent. We were not kept waiting long. The restaurant is clean and of good decor. The biggest selling point is the staff are so friendly. We were talking to (sorry I forgot your name) a member of staff and what a lovely and sincere gentleman. I was highly surprised and pleased my partner and myself were given baileys on the house.Well worth visiting and I highly recommend this lovely place.

Me and my girlfriend visited here last night and thoroughly enjoyed our meal. Mixed Kebab for starters tasted great, could of done with a slightly bigger portion(but I do tend to be a bit greedy)! Both had Korma for mains and it also was spot on. Reasonable price, chilled atmosphere and friendly staff and of course lovely food. Will deffo be visiting again.

I think Spice of Bengal has suffered from a 'hangover' in people's perception as the previous incarnation, 'Indi's' was pretty dire. This team of fairly young men came along, took over, cleaned the place up and have been serving beautifully cooked, reasonably priced Indian food for maybe 5 years now. People seem to finally have got the message about just how good the food is and they're getting busier which is fantastic news. They are such a lovely bunch of lads, very friendly & helpful. We used to live near Bradford so there was never any shortage of good Indian restaurants to choose from and I'd say that Spice of Bengal is better than any we've eaten in over there. In fact my parents who still live there come to Hinsdale for a decent curry - now that's praise indeed!

I don't understand why this restaurant isn't busier. The food and service is always excellent and the prices reasonable. I think you would have a job to find better Indian food in the Southporr area.

I sang the praises of this restaurant after our first visit but this time was even better. A slightly different menu but still with all our favourites. If you are anywhere near Ainsdale, you really should try it.

Four adults and three children went 'right through the menu'. I have never seen them eat so much! We shared dishes and and each one was to die for. Please, please don't stick with what you have ordered. Share and you will experience all the magnificent flavours that this restaurant offers. Ainsdale is lucky to have the Spice of Bengal.

I live locally to this restaurant, but have never thought to write a review of it before. Some splendid Bengal specials on the menu which are really interesting. Contrary to some previous negative comments we have always been served promptly and have never waited long for our meal. Of course that can be influenced by how many people are in the restaurant. When food is cooked to order (not heated in a microwave) you should just sit back, have a drink, and enjoy your company. Whether eat in or take out we have never been disappointed. .

I never understand why people resort to commenting on websites instead of bringing things up at the time. This restaurant is amazing. The staff are brilliant, even though some customers think it is funny to abuse their friendly hospitality. The food is excellent all hot all fresh all to order. If you want click and ping go to a pub that gets deliveries from Brakes as in. put in micro and wait for ping. This is not that kind of place thank goodness they cook to order and the dishes can be adapted to personal taste. The tandoori chicken is moist tasty and very edible. Most of the customers are local so ignore the poor reviews they were obviously written by people who cant have the decency to ask politely at the time for their issues to be rectified. If they cant spell dont believe the reviews.

Slowest service I've ever received at a restaurant. After an hour and a half of waiting we had only just had our starters and had I been braver, I would have asked for the bill early and left. Nobody asked us how the food was or asked if we needed anything else. The food itself was average and poor value for money. Definitely will not be going back!

The food is always amazing. The staff are brilliant, nothing is too much trouble. The restaurant is spotless, with lovely table linen and crystal glasses. Contemporary decor. All the dishes are freshly cooked and always served piping hot. The wine list has a good range both of wines and prices. There's a draught beer plus a range of bottles. It's only about 5 mins walk from Ainsdale train station and several buses stop outside. Call for a pint in Bar Mio first then wander down and have a leisurely curry in a great little place.

We went out for a family meal here, the staff are very friendly and attentitive. My nephew was unsure on how the various dishes differed and the staff were more than happy to help. The early bird menu offer was on, which is excellent value. Between the 6 of us we had chicken tikka, onion bhajis as well as the usual poppadums and sauces. All were excellent, the bhajis were delicious, and the chicken was lovely and moist. For mains we had pilau rice, naan bread, lamb bhuna, lamb rogan josh, lamb dupiaza and chicken bhuna. Everything was excellent, one point I will say is that the dishes could of been a little hotter for my liking but I see why they are a little milder than usual. We will definantly be returning here. They even do take always!Delicious :)

We visited the 'Spice of Bengal 'early, around 6pm, and chose the 'Early Bird' menu. It was superb. We had Popadoms and Chutneys while we waited ( not long ) for our starter. We chose Chicken Tikka which was delicious, although there was also a choice of Onion Bargee or Samosa. For the main course we chose Lamb Madras (my husband ), and Chicken Vindaloo,(myself) although there were plenty of other choices ranging from mild to very very hot. (Plal). It was accompanied by a choice of rice or a naan bread. It was superb, better than many high priced restaurants I have visited in my time. The restaurant was very nice, the staff very professional. We were brought iced water, and , at the end of our meal, hot towels. This lovely experience came at a price of only £8.95 each. Amazing! I am a 'Geordie' lady in her early 60's, and was on holiday for the first time in this area. What luck to stumble upon such a gem. We Geordie's know a good curry when we see one,we also know excellent value for money. I would highly recommend this restaurant ,without hesitation ,to anyone. My compliments to the Chef.Mari.

Just ordered a takeaway (this is not a restaurant) from here and was pleasantly impressed. Only been open a few months, premises are clean, staff were friendly, food was ready when they said it would be. I collected my order. Samosas and onion bhajis were crispy, pilau rice was fragrant and fresh. Chicken madras could have been hotter but was tasty nevertheless. Chicken tikka massala was also very tasty, only maybe missing some onions or a little veg, but chicken pieces were tender thighs, so a thumbs up there. These additions would have made it 5 out of 5!! All in all, a tasty meal at a reasonable price, from a clean premises, hope it continues and I wish them luck with the new venture. I will return!!

Formerly known as Nasib Tandoori on Kew Road in Birkdale, this Indian take-away has new owners and a new name - The Tandoori. (I believe it is now owned & run by the people behind Kasturi on Eastbank Street in Southport town-centre.) On entering, I particularly liked the view through to the kitchen - giving me confidence in their offer. Selecting from a smart and comprehensive menu, I ordered the following: King Prawn Danchak (£9) Mushroon Rice (£2.60) Aloo Gobi side dish (£2.75) They advised me waiting time was 30 minutes and the food was ready in about 25 mins. All dishes were enjoyable. Decent portion sizes and good prices. The King Prawn dish had 10 large prawns which were very tasty. I asked for my vegetable dish to be made hot and they got this right. All in all it was pretty good and I`ll be back. Main course chicken curry is a very reasonable £4.75 & boiled rice is £1.65, so you can eat from here without breaking the bank. Free parking directly outside the venue, on the road nearby, or across the road. PRO TIP: ring ahead to place your order on 01704 568637. If you collect and spend £15 or more, you are entitled to a portion of pakora & poppadoms for free!
