Hilal Balti House in Sefton

Our family regular curry house - delicious food and lovely staff ❤️ Over the last 20 years we have probably had over 100 orders from here and it is always delicious :)

The family were here for the weekend and we wanted an Indian takeaway. I know someone who eats at HILAL BALTI House regularly so we decided to give it a try. We ordered online. Eight main courses and a number of starters and sides. I got 15% off for ordering online and was given a chilled bottle of white wine and the manager brought the food to the car and packed it safely for me. We had a lovely evening and enjoyed all the food. There was enough left for a meal for two the following night.

We a family of 7 enjoyed a beautiful meal in the Balti House. The Balti Hose was full and in fact they were turning people away that’s how popular it has become.

Romantic Evening Meal. We are a regular visitor to this excellent Indian Restaurant whereupon you often find large family’s also enjoying a meal. The Balti House has been operating 25 yrs and is still as popular as ever. It provides excellent Indian meals at reasonable prices. Alcoholic drinks are cheap.

I visit this restaurant regularly with family and friends as well as ordering take always. Both brilliant.. best around. In fact my teenage kids won’t eat anywhere else. Traditional feel. Staff very friendly and good at helping with choices when wanting to explore the menu. Good always the same decent standard. Staff can not do enough for you. Piping hot, good quality. Decent portions. Definitely recommend. Yes the decor is older fashioned but that goes with the vibe of the building and suits the traditional feel. I would not listen to the poor reviews on here.. I was shocked to read them.

Had 2 nice takeaway meals from here, so booked a reservation on Saturday night, The food was good, but the service was awful... my wife and I felt rushed from the second we sat down to order a drink and we were hardly given any time to read the menu. The restaurant had two large parties booked in but elsewhere the rest of the restaurant was quiet and not once did the waiters come over to ask if the food was nice etc. The food was ok, but the waiters were very cold and rushed us and even when we paid the bill and left a tip, we were not acknowledged when we walked out and we just felt like we were not relevant from the minute we walked in to the minute we walked out, We are easy going people who have made many v good comments on trip advisor for many other restaurants over many years,,,, but we will not be going back here for a meal.

I often use this app to write positively about the restaurants I visit. Unfortunately, I don’t have a good word to say about Hilal Balti House. The food is bland and flavourless, the drinks are warm, the decor is dark and drab and the atmosphere is non existent. Formby village deserves a better quality Indian restaurant.

Sadly this was one of the worst Indian meals I have ever had. The food had no taste at all… I couldn’t find anything nice to say about the meal and my friend’s food was the same. It’s an Indian restaurant that doesn’t play Indian music but instead they had Jazz on. Not very authentic... When it come to paying, they don’t accept card and both local cash machines were out of order, leaving my friend to walk 20 mins away to get cash. Feedback: Add some flavours to your dishes. Get with the times and get a card reader. Play some Indian style music to add to the atmosphere. Serve cold drinks (the soft drinks were warm). Sorry, I would never visit this place again.

I regularly order takeaway from here and the food had always been good, however at the weekend the food was notable poor and furthermore our order had gone from £16 to £23 which is a 43% increase for the mathematicians amongst you. I don’t mind that they put the price up but 43% seems excessive. Furthermore the quality of the food was poor. The mixed started meat and the chicken meat was very dry and chewy and I expect it may have been reheated from the prior day. Previous experiences have been good hence the 3 stars rather than what would be a one or two based on this meal alone. Hopefully it’s a one off. I will be trying to order later in the day going forward to try and avoid any of yesterdays left overs.

Ordered a takeaway from here whilst visiting family, was already so excited because they had Makhonwala on the menu and it's so rare to find in my local Indian restaurants. We got a good mixture of dishes between 4 of us and all the food was delicious. We were all very happy and very full, for such a good price!

We had a delivery from here and ordered a wide range of items. The food came quickly and was hot and everyone in our group enjoyed their food. They were particularly helpful when ordering as one of our group has a nut allergy and when the food came, it was very clearly labelled and packaged separately which was a nice touch. I though the amount of lamb in my Madras and my wife’s Balti was a little stingy (hence the drop of a point to 4) but otherwise, very satisfied

Ordered chicken jalfrezi with mushroom rice - with keema naan. Wasn’t great. Very little taste with no heat. Very reasonable price, but sadly won’t be visiting again.

We ordered a take away for a treat as our usual restaurant has changed to a street food menu and no longer does what we used to have. We ordered two chicken dishes, dhansak and madras , both tasted like warmed up chicken and the dhansak went in the bin. It wasn’t sweet and sour as it’s supposed to be but bland lemon tasting, also one of the two onion bhajis was hard and chewy like it had been sat in the oven for too long. Won’t use this restaurant again

The food was so tasty and great quality. The service was wonderful and great value for money, Will absolutely be going again with the family.

Have been coming to this restaurant over a number of years. It has always never disappointed. In lock down had really good takeaway meals. It is lovely to be able to now go and sit down in the restaurant. Service is always friendly and attentive. Had the tandoori chicken and king prawn balti. Really good!! Highly recommend 🌝

Had a takeaway from here during lockdown and thought it was fantastic! We will definitely visit the restaurant now restrictions have eased. I ordered a Chicken Makonwala with Samosas and my husband had a Jalfrezi with Onion Bhajis. We also ordered some poppadoms and chutneys....

Great place, great food and staff, very reasonable, decor is horrendous but don’t let it put you off.

We love this place. We travel a lot and have been to many restaurants and by far this is the best Indian restaurant ever! And the staff are just so lovely - nothing is too much trouble! Highly recommend.

Got a lamb pasanda fri 12 Feb 21. Garbage in every way. Clearly not one of their specialities. Wouldn’t go back. Had better from M&S, which was still open!

We absolutely love this restaurant! Arrived to be greeted and seated quickly! We ordered drinks and they arrived promptly accompanied by some gorgeous crispy poppadoms. Our server was then back to take our orders. We both ordered a different dish to try with peshwari naan...

Under the current lockdown situation I ordered a takeaway from here. Wow! Chicken Sagwalla was superb. It’s not very often that I am able to clear the plate with Indian food but I couldn’t get enough. One of my fave places to dine in also...

We live locally and consider this restaurant to be an asset. The food is good, the staff are invariably friendly and welcoming, and the building is rather special.

Well worth a visit. Food excellent. Only gripe was when I handed over £40 for a meal that came to £31 and the waiter asked me if I wanted change! Thought that this was rather cheeky.

Without a shadow of doubt, this restaurant quality of food must go down as one of the finest Indian Restaurants not only in Formby but on Merseyside. Chefs specials are excellent, if you are very hungry try their salmon meal. As the restaurant is in a 17th century school house it does not have its own car park, but in the evening it is quite easy to park locally. I highly recommend you give it a try. The restaurant is not open for lunch.

Food was disgusting! Starters were over priced mush. Main meal had no taste whatsoever. Won't be eating here again.

Visited with my partner, the staff are very helpful and assisted me to choose what I might like. When the dish was served I found it was a little mild for me and so they very kindly insisted on swapping it for another dish which was perfect for my taste.

Came here around 12 of us . Very busy Saturday night . Brilliant service and food . My lamb rogan josh was excellent. We will return

3rd visit here, unfortunately it will be my last, it was a toss up between Wetherspoon the Lighthouse or the Indian. I like my curry as it is in most Indian restaurants, it's taken me three visits to decide this is not how I like my curry.

Called in last week for early evening meal.Hadnt been for a long time but after our meal will definitely be going back. Starters chicken chat & papadoms & chutney were good. Shared a chicken tikka makhonwala & king prawn saag with pilau rice & a peshwari naan. The food was really nice & tasty, we really enjoyed our meal. It was midweek & quiet but that did not detract from the really good food & service.

This is one of the top restaurants on Merseyside. Excellent food. Excellent staff and al set in a 17th century thatched roof school. What more could you ask. Food is the best I have had from a Indian restaurant

The food at the balti must be the best around- you cannot fault the food or service. Take out is available too and the price is reasonable. Parking can be a little difficult, hence the 4 star, but highly recommend for the food.

Been going to this restaurant for 25 years. I had a takeaway earlier in the year which was dreadful. I gave them the benefit of the doubt And went back which was fine. Went again two days ago 21st Dec and had the worst meal I’ve had there. So bad I won’t be going back.

Went to this. Restaurant as we all fancied an Indian meal. This restaurant always offers a good range of food at reasonable prices. Nice to see that the restaurant was moderately busy.

We went to the Balti last night, as ever, food was great and the service too. I would have no hesitation in recommending this as a place to eat.

Stumbled on this restaurant by chance, the smell as I passed it was wonderful so I waited for opening time. I had a starter of Chicken Tandoori, very nice. Main was Chicken Jalfrezi with boiled rice and Bombay Potato and half a lager. It wasn't as spicy hot overall as I've had before, but spicy enough and generous portions, could have done with a little more tomato though. Plenty of onion and green chilie though.

We joined friends, at their suggestion, for a meal together. It is a while since I have eaten there, although I have ordered take-aways.

I have often eaten at this restaurant. I cannot praise the staff highly enough - they are very attentive towards their diners. Apart from eating in, I also often had takeaway from The Hilal Balti and the food for takeaway is as excellent & of high quality. Apart from all of this, the menu is very reasonably priced. I have no hesitation in recommending the Hilal Balti House to those looking for an excellent quality dining experience.

Went to this fantastic restaurant with family. The premises are adorable, and the food was unbelievably tasty. The service was flawless and the prices are perfectly acceptable. Loved it and will be going again. Highly recommended!

In all the years I've lived around here I've never visited the Balti house.....three months ago we found it and have been back 3 times....love the food, service and great value.

I ordered a tandoori chicken, which arrived on a sizzling platter, however, when I cut into it the chicken was cold inside. I informed the waiter discreetly as there were other diners and he took my plate away.He brought it back one minute later looking exactly as he had taken it, and advised me that he had put it back into the oven and now it was fine.I explained that I did not wish to eat it and he just removed my plate, there was no apology, no offer of a different dish and I was left with just a small plate of pilau rice to eat.My partner had to share his meal with me.On leaving the restaurant, again there was no apology, the waiter just took the price of the tandoori chicken off the bill.Poor customer service, cold food, will definitely not eat here again.

A frequent source of fabulous take-aways!Always friendly welcome, whether eating in or collecting - best curries in the area.For eating in - it's not the smartest place, but it's clean and has a warm, friendly atmosphere - and the food more than makes up for the wallpaper! The cozy alcove is a nice place for a quiet meal for two, while the main space buzzes for a big party.

This is my favourite curry house in formby. The decor needs a bit of a make over but the food and service more than make up for that. The staff go out of their way to serve and explain the dishes, even tweeting the dishes to suit personal tastes.

As always, vegetarian dishes were well cooked and presented. The staff were, again as always, friendly, courteous and efficient. Two dishes were adapted from menu items with no extra charge and everyone had a great meal.

Always enjoy dining here, never had a bad meal.staff friendly and very helpful,I would certainly recommend the Hilal.

Went to this Restaurant on Friday 2nd September. Food was excellent staff very friendly and service great. Look forward to visiting here again soon.

We have been going here for years and have never been disappointed. Excellent food, friendly and attentive service, good value and plenty of choice. Usual Bengali food with some different dishes that are well worth trying. Deshi Shaktora with limes and various fish dishes. Just wish they did traditional Indian deserts.

Always a good meal here. Nice surroundings and friendly staff, a great choice of food, and they are always happy to change or add something to your meal. Very tasty and good value for money. I've been going here for years, and one of my favourite dishes is the shahi balti. But I also love their veggie dishes, and they are very happy to accommodate how you want it cooked. Highly recommended.

Went here one night because the Shanti was full. Average Indian food in an average atmosphere. Greatly improved from the last time I went 10 years ago. Nothing special but OK in an emergency.

I recently went to the Hilal Balti House. Having been to others in the area i wanted to see how it would compete. It did not disappoint. The service of the staff was quick and friendly, and the food was lovely. Having gone with my partner we were very happy with a calm and welcoming atmosphere. I intend on visiting again very soon.

I decided to try this place as i was staying near on business and read the good reviews... sorry to say it was an unbelievable disappointment. The alarm bells started ringing when the popadoms that arrived were soft so obviously weren't freshly made. Next up was the prawn puri which had probably 2 chopped up prawns. That was the main issue though... it was cooked in a creamy, incredibly sweet korma style sauce, very, very odd... i left 80% of it. Finally the Lamb Bhuna was again awful although the best of the 3 dishes. Had to ask for some chopped green chilli to give the dish something that resembled spice as it was completely lacking in any. Veg paratha had hardly any veg in it. Sorry but one of the worst curries i've ever had. The owner was kind enough to take the prawn puri off the bill.

Really authentic Indian food at its best. Generous portions and great service make this THE place to visit in Formby.

Ordered a chicken tikka masala here which was to die for! All the staff were lovely and smiley and the price of all the food is very reasonable, only thing the restaurant is lacking is a bit of atmosphere, definitely the best place to go for authentic indian food in Formby

Having eaten from here before I was great to see standards maintained. The menu offers a number of dishes not seen in most 'Indian' restaurants.We ordered takeaway and tried a couple of starters and a couple of the mains along with some extras. All were aromatic and tasty. Portion size is good with plenty of meat in the sauce.

Very friendly staff; Usman, Aktar & Saeed. Excellent service. Delicious food. We have enjoyed many splendid meals at the Balti. Mixed starters. Papadums with chutneys. My favourite meal is chicken tikka byriani. Just tell the staff how hot or mild you want the meal & they will sort it! Would recommend to all! Best Indian for miles!!!

Been going here for years. I love the place. They do a phal the is amazingly hot. Not on the menu but if you ask for a hot vindaloo the waiter normally offers it me. Cracking naan bread and papadums. Overlap brilliant

This truly is our most favourite restaurant by far, and have visited as a couple and with family and friends over the years and would highly recommend the food the staff and the service. there is always the warmest welcome and the most attentive service, long may the Halil Balti house reign in it's supreme status

This is a great place to come to if you want the authentic touch with your meal. Premises could do with some modernisation although it does add to its charm. Service is fast and pleasant and the food is delicious - great if you want to stay local.

We have been eating here regularly for about 15 years. The food is always of a very high standard and the service welcoming. Priced are very reasonable with a good selection of drinks, a bottle of house wine is £10.95 and very drinkable. Well worth a visit.

This is a typical old style balti house the food is amazing I've not had a better Indian / balti meal ,Don't get put of by the shabby exterior or the "ornate" interior It's all part of an old style curry house the way it should be!!
