Spice Cottage in South Norfolk

Tasty meal, good portions and friendly service. The only downside was that it was a little chilly on the table in the corner.

Not a good experience. A party of four of us visited the spice cottage and we were shown to a table that was shoved up against the wall on a small table where we were constantly banging elbows. There was general consensus amongst all of us that the starters were not as good as we'd hoped. The samosas were soggy and the food not well presented, My chicken tikka masala was watery and tasteless and I literally ate two pieces of the chicken. My friend specifically asked for no coriander on the top of her meals and they came with coriander on. She left most of her prawns as she said they were slimy. At the end of our meal, my friend complained of feeling unwell and during the night I too have had a very upset stomach. We will not be going back there again and I will not recommend it. Very disappointing. I'm leaving the restaurant. I noticed they only had a score of 4 with food hygiene,

Had very bad experience with a waiter named ‘Sumon’ here. 4 of us went to eat and he refused to feed us because we were all not ordering main foods. 4 of us and we ordered chicken tikka biriyani, Mango lassi and beers amount us as most of us have already ate. He refused to give us food and insulted us by saying it’s not fair we are ordering less food and he can’t serve. We were traveling through Diss, the girl with us was very sick. So we stopped by to eat for her. And Sumon refused to feed us. Had to convince him to finally get the food. It was very bad customer service. I really recommend the owner to train the person on how to serve customers with a smile. He had very arrogant attitude.

Had a delivery for my son’s birthday there’s was barely nothing in any of the tubs. The sag aloo only had 6 very small quarters from a potato. The tikka massale tasted like an aloft coconut! Will stick with cinnamon in the futures

Away for a little weekend break, and was recommended this as a good takeaway place, unfortunately it was to far for them to deliver but could still do collection. The staff were very polite and friendly, asked about my break, and what I thought of the area. Food came out hot and although we had a 10-15 minute drive back to where we were staying it was still hot. Which we were very happy about. My wife got carried away with stuff to try so we did end up with two bags of food for 2 but the food it's self was full of flavour, and we were stuffed but extremely happy with it all. Would definitely recommend this Indian restaurant if you happen to be in this area.

We have visited the Spice Cottage several times and always enjoyed the meal. Great food, pleasant service and the Cobra is nice and cold.

They only accept cash. Dont use them as your money goes abroad no tax and vat. Reported to the tax man.

We visited the spice cottage for our anniversary 28th April. The service was very good . The food was amazing . Definitely go back but only visiting the area . It is a must if you stay here !

Tasty food with VERY attentive service. The curries are spicy and delicious however the staff continually come to the area to check if things are ok (they come every minute and it can get very irritating as the area we were sat in was pretty compact with only 4 tables in close proximity). Also the chutneys they provide with poppadoms are not complimentary, with this being part of the menu but sneakily written.

Very small, but good food, good prices, I would guess can hold around 16 people max.

terrible customer service avoid ordering a delivery unless you want a web of lies just to get them to take a card payment over the phone, its 2023 and they will not give a straight honest reason for not accepting this type of payment every time you try they offer a different and bizarre made up excuse not to take your card, i wouldn't usually bother writing a review but its pretty lame, i used to order a lot from these guys in the past and had absolutely no issue paying card then all of a sudden a different member of staff starts answering the phone and all of a sudden they get 'scammers using other peoples cards after finding it on the floor in town' to place an order for indian food : also getting people pay by card then get a refund from their bank because they say the food is bad, also people complain that they where charged twice so they no longer take the card payments , like i said every time its a different lame excuse, shame customer service is bricked as the food not half bad.

Food was okay but cold when arrived so had to put it in the microwave. Arrived over 40 minutes late and when I called up 20mins after arrival time I got told it would be here “any minute now”. When arrived they missed my order and got told it would take another 45/50 mins for a refund or for them to redeliver. Received no refund or food by the end of the day. Very disappointed

2nd time we have visited, 1st time brilliant great food and staff, however 2nd visit although we had booked it took an hr to be served with a poppadom and a beer. We had to leave without our main course as we had an appointment elsewhere.

Ordered takeaway delivery for 4 people while nearby on holiday. Food was nearly an hour late arriving (had to phone to chase twice), we ordered online 3 hours earlier so suspect our order was forgotten. It was also not very hot, small portions and very average food, 10% online order discount advertised was not given, no option to pay by card online, just cash (who keeps that amount of cash these days!?) and when asked why the discount hadn't been applied, the delivery driver said 'you're on holiday, you're rich' which I think is really rude. I'd cut a bit of slack for it being a Saturday night, but would never use this place again.

The meal was nice. The staff were friendly. Not the best Indian I have been too but definitely not the worst.

Firstly got home from collection to find a missing dish. Went back to collect without much of an apology. Meal was mediocre at best, but one thing for me- I ordered chicken dansak and there was an overwhelming taste of fish, like it had been cooked in with prawns. My partner could smell fish too, waiting for a bad tummy. Not impressed. Will go to the one in harleston now. Good luck to anyone ordering

Ordered a takeaway via the website this evening for delivery. When the order arrived it had an item missing. I phoned the restaurant and the person on the phone was incredibly rude and offered no apology at all. They refused to refund the missing item and insisted that the only option was to have it redelivered within an unspecified time frame - it’s now over an hour later and there’s still no sign of the missing item. One to avoid! Give your business to someone who appreciates it!

Great food very authentic and staff lovely.

We recently had a takeaway from this restaurant, and it was fine. However, last Friday 15th July, I really fancied some tandoori chicken, so we order chicken tikka starte, chicken shashlik, prawn korma, peshawar naan, onion bhaji, and poppadoms etc. Unfortunately, the tikka was tasteless and very dry, the shashlick likewise. The onions/peppers/tomatoes were slimy and tasteless. The korma was not as usual, and the bhaji was only and tasted like cardboard. Very disappointing.

Awful food. Biryani absolutely NO taste. The mint yoghurt slightly brown in colour, not fresh and bad taste. It all made me feel sick and couldn't eat any of it. Didn't bring enough change for the delivery so I had to overpay. How convenient. It was delivered quickly although that's probably only because none of it was fresh.

Went with friends on Saturday evening and despite some of the other negative reviews I’ve read, we were all really impressed by the Spice Cottage. The food was delicious, ample portions and friendly service. I would definitely recommend it and look forward to going again.

Took 3 hours to receive our food and it was cold. The imperial wok down the street consistently makes it to our house in 1, so didn't appreciate the cavalier attitude about is being "so far away". If you can't deliver then don't offer it as an option. The worst part is this has been our favourite restaurant in this country, feel very let down. Will be a fair while before we go again and update this review sadly *Edit* tried them again, now they're forcing cash payments? Why?

This is the best curry house I’ve ever been to and I’ve been all over the world, the prawn himali was sensational I felt like I was in the Himalayas in some of lucid dream and next came my chicken tikka dhansak and I was whisked into the vibrant culture of India, I came with 4 of my work colleagues and everyone rated the meal 10/10 I’d highly recommend to anyone (kingfisher on tap)

This was probably the best meal I've had from here in a while. Asked for the chicken to be cut smaller, it was a much better size. Very nice. I'll be back

Have used this restaurant a few times and it’s not the best Indian food by any stretch. They are the only Indian to delivery in Diss, which is a convenience for us. Long wait this time though. Also, every time I haves called to place an order for delivery the chap asks for cash on delivery! I wonder why that would be?……

Visited recently to have dinner. Tried to book but impossible to get hold of them before hand. Poppadoms and drinks came quickly enough, but then we had to ask them to take out order twice. The process took nearly an hour which is unacceptable. Food...

Bill prices were inflated to the menu prices . Excuse was had not received . Curries all taste the samev. Poor attitude when we queried why we are being billed more than the menu . Tried to bring me the takeaway menu when I checked really how bad is that . SADLY NO DECENT INDIAN RESTAURANTVIN DISS

great food and always consistent, however customer service and front of house / deliveries are a pain, one week they take card no problems , then they make excuses for you to pay cash, then next week they don't offer delivery, a shame cause the food quality really is great, not used cash since covid hit. would be 5 stars if they could fix customer services card machine and reliable delivery

3 of us choose several meals and sides. It was all delicious with every dish having identifiably different spice mixes. Had it delivered and it arrived on time. Very friendly man delivered it.

Very disappointed by the service that I received yesterday evening. I have ordered many times from here however, the way I was spoken to by the male at the front desk when collecting my food means I will not be placing an order here again in the future. I placed my order at 5pm for collection at 6:30pm. I then had to wait 45 minutes to be given my food and was told that it was my mistake of having a different name on the order which was rectified within the first 5 minutes. I understand and am very sympathetic to a busy time of day, however, the attitude from the male receptionist was far from apologetic and I did not appreciate the blame being put on me for their slow service.

Food tasted fantastic, had two Curry's, garlic nan and egg fried rice, pity it was only warm not piping hot as you would expect, only one other table in so not busy

No set menu so feeding large family is very pricey compared to local competition. We're talking twice the price. Tried it anyway and it was awful. All portions were very small with shallow dishes rather than the usual Indian takeaway size. All 3 curries were watery and lacking in taste. They also all tasted pretty much the same, which madras, masala and jalfrezi shouldn't. took over 1 hour to arrive. All in all just useless. Poor reflection of the wonders of Indian food. Never again.

We visited here whilst we were on a weekend away. The food was incredible. One of the best Indian restaurants I've been to (and I've been to a lot) friendly staff and a clean restaurant. Recommend to anyone in the area.

Would highly recommend. Staff were very friendly and attentive. Best curry I've had for years. We ordered from the Nepalese menu as this was new for us. Food was amazing. Good size portions and so full of flavour, with a comfortable spice level. The restaurant was busy with a constant flow of people to eat in and collecting takeaway, with no long waits for food. Would definitely recommend trying the malai lamb chops and the Goan lamb shank

Food was OK, service was dreadful. Glacial speed. 30 minutes before taking a food order, never asked if we wanted any more drinks during the meal. 15 minutes after we've eaten and we have to hunt somebody down to get the bill. Don't go if you're in a rush

Good Indian takeaway pleased they deliver to us as most places in diss do not Good quality very tasty 👍 Samosas disappointing and more cheese needed in saag paneer. Biriyani poor. Fan of the dhansak and mr naga and vindaloo curries.

So dissapointed, we attended for a post lockdown engagement celebration with my parents. First of all no one greeted us then we found out there were no highchairs available, we dealt with this but we were then sat for around 15 minutes before we were even given a menu. Then about another 15 to actually order. We were immediately made to feel like having our children with us was an inconvenience even though they were well behaved. The food was nice but the service was dreadful. Though interestingly enough they quickly bought the bill over to us no trouble! There were two other tables in this restaurant, it was 6pm when we sat down and we tried to keep the noise level to a minimum which was difficult with so much waiting. I don't expect to be served immediately but the service was lacking and made us feel incredibly unwelcome and uncomfortable

OK it's time to say it. What on earth has happened to Indian restaurants around here? The takeaway I ordered from Spice Cottage tonight was a perfect example of the rubbish that it seems normal to serve nowadays. I ordered a Chicken Jaipuri... "Authentic mogul dish cooked with onion, yoghurt, jeera, coriander, tomato, fresh herbs, cream. Mild to medium." Cost me £10 What I received was a tub of bland, nondescript yellow slop with a few sad pieces of chicken floating in it. If I asked to the chef to taste the curry and tell me what it was off the menu, there is not a chance he could do it! The bhindi bhaji was as bad as I've had, under cooked and tasteless. I ordered pilau rice but what we got was just plain boiled rice. Even the papadoms were stale. Please guys, raise your standards! this food is embarrassing. A little bit of authenticity and care would be much appreciated.

I am only putting 1 star as I am unable to not put any stars During this pandemic businesses are struggling yet takeaway businesses are allowed to operate. Spice cottage being a restaurant is not allowed to operate as one due to the restrictions. One would like to hope that more concentration and effort could be put into their delivery service. At the time of writing this I am now on the 3 hour and still waiting. Every time I have called I am fobbed off by the restaurant personnel with “30min sir “ Absolutely disgraceful I only hope it tastes good when I finally receive my order. (Review will follow on standard of food) I am currently what is known as H”angry” Following up 21.18pm I finally received my order!! Well all I can say is this , those poor delivery drivers who’s put in the firing line of dissatisfied customers as a result of restaurant managers making false promises to over deliver , when all That actually do is under deliver. My meal well I have wrote enough already but to sum up, watery (although the menu description states “thick sauce “ , Sour tasting (probably due to being pre cooked , and then put in the fridge warm and no doubt reheated at a later date. Luke warm in temperature and oily. I could go on but I’ll sim it up with this I will not be using this establishment as a choice of Indian cuisine

Always eat in side but tonight got it delivered spent 56 quid on it and it had no taste at all hubbys was ok but mine and my daughter's was so watery and as no taste what so ever very disappointed

After moving into the area this is the first curry delivery we have found and have been here 8 months now! The delivery time was long and delayed but communication was good....and I understand at the moment everything is very difficult....but the food when delivered was very delicious 😋 hopefully next time it will be quicker 🙂

What a rip off. My chosen lamb dish consisted of five pieces of chewy meat in an uninspiring sauce. Will not use them again.

Booked a table well in advance for 8.15pm on Christmas eve, there was no mention of early closing. However when we arrived it felt very rushed. As soon as we had finished our mains, the waiter cleared the table and then stood two metres away with the desert menu and said, does anyone want this because we're closing. We ordered some after dinner drinks and by the look on his face we were obviously a pain in the backside. If you don't want to open Xmas eve, that's fine, but don't take £88 pounds of us then try to rush us out of the door!

Food gone badly downhill. Rubber pompadoms, told it isn't possible to cook fresh? They take 8 to 10 seconds. Nan was almost raw, told they can't cook anymore? Been going they for years, never been an issue. Tikka masala and potato bland. They said oh well. Charged full price. This is 8 or 10 times below standard. Won't go again. Taste if Raj is superb
