Ordered a curry meal for 2 and as there was a 1 1/2 hour wait for delivery, we went to collect instead. If we had walked in to order then we would have left straight away as the place is very scruffy, dirty and had a bad burning smell upon entering. The 2 chicken curries consisted of a few pieces of chicken floating in a large amount of gravy, can't call it curry as there was no taste to it at all. The rice was cold and the side order of Bombay Aloo consisted of reheated boiled potatoes in some sort of congealed brown tasteless sauce, not good. Onion bhajis, yuk! We also had 2 Sheek Kebabs which came with fried onions but nothing else, at least they were spicy if not very warm. The only decent thing was the naan bread! Cash only if you still want to order... We love Indian food and were very disappointed with this meal...we will not return.

Living in Torquay, we have used the Spice cellar several times before, but i must say its really gone down hill. Fewer people are using it now, as I got straight through on my telephone order and it was delivered almost immidiately and that was 9pm Saturday night! We ordered Shami Kebab starter Plus Chicken tika starter and a curry. The shami kebabs were TINY. literally a mouth full for each. There was no onions with them or salad!. When I phoned to complain that they forgot salad and fried onions, I was told you dont get them with starters. What a joke. They have lost me as a customer. I shall go elswhere.

Curries delivered. Ordered 5 different ones. All tastes the same except for korma, which was, as you expect, different......but they were all tasteless. The chicken was still pink in one of the dishes. My son called them to let them know. Asked for a refund on that individual curry as we could not eat it. They said that it was not possible. Offered a discount on the next order! There won't be one!!

We have had many meals from the spice cellar, always delicious and value for money . We had the Meal for two which is 2 mains, a side , onion Bhajis, naan and poppudoms with dips. Tonight’s was exceptional! So much food that we will probably have it for breakfast! Will definitely return.

I'd actually give no stars at all. Ordered through just eat paid by card. Given an eta....rang when food became 20 minutes late...reassured it wouldn't be more than ten minutes.....waited and rang again when 15 had passed.....offered free coke and told that it would be refunded if it wasn't arrived in 5 minutes....was over two hours since ordering by then so very late. 10minutes passed and I called back....wouldnt refund, was shouted at by the lady answering the phone and told not there problem I wouldnt get a refund and if i had a problem to speak to just eat then phone slammed down! Food arrived cold ten minutes later as I was on the way to bed having given up hope. Food was cold and terrible. Reasturant not interested when approached via just eat. Won't use again and would advise others to avoid.

Ordered a take away and they do not take card payment over the phone(first worry) asked how long until delivery, was told 40 mins. Asked so not more than an hour then. No, reassured it won't be. Several unanswered phone calls later...One hour and fourth five minutes later the food arrived. It was disgustining. Do not use this take away. If the standards are this low think about the kitchen standards..

Phoned to complain and they put the phone down...ignorant! The korma was bland, the cheese smell went on all of it, staff did not want to know when we called up Have tried to call again and they ignored the call, then got a delivery driver to talk to us, but he could not help. Disgusting. I would not normally review on line, but I'm in shock how rude they were. The food was not good, has ruined our whole family evening.

My local curry house. I avoided it for years, as about 10 years ago I had a shocker from them. It has changed hands a few times since then and I've now had two good ones on the bounce from em.,I know it looks a little sketchy from the outside, but the guys running it are sound, and the food hits the spot. Give it a whirl.HINT - gets busy on a sat night, go down there in person if you want to jump the line!

I have been a customer of the Spice Cellar since 2014 and they have consistently remained my favourite Indian takeaway in Torquay. The menu is extensive, the prices are fair and the portions are generous.I see some reviews here complaining about long wait times, and it is true that it is always worth planning and ordering in advance from here. But that's because they truly do appear to cook as much of their food as possible FRESH to order! If another curry house can whip you up 6 different curries, 4 naans and sides in 20 minutes then that's because it's just being reheated from the fridge or even from frozen! Standing in the Spice Cellar waiting area you can see right into the kitchen with their huge hob, buckets of spices and a naan oven and you can watch them make your curry up from scratch, roll out the naan and drop it in the oven and the only thing that comes out their fridge at the end is the salad. Personally I am more than happy to wait 40 minutes if it means fresh food like this. The staff have always been very friendly to me and have been quick to correct any mistakes when bagging my order (what takeaway doesn't occasionally make such mistakes).I always collect in person so I cannot comment on their delivery service. If you are looking for an absolute bargain then order using their 'Meal For Two' offer on the bottom of the menu: 2 curries, 2 rice, 4 onion bhajis, 2 poppadoms, 1 garlic naan, salad and dips...all for £20! And the portions are so generous we have found that this deal can easily feed 4, so that's just £5 per head...bargain.

Certainly a lot of takeaway, and perhaps a few hours later for those with a skinful of beer it might seem very nice. The addition of some extra mint yogurt and a bit of salad was a nice touch but it doesn't alter the fact that the meal was poor and as so often happens the vegetable curry was just a few lumps of old looking potato with a few peas and carrots languishing in an ocean of sauce. Same with the meat dish. Side orders also not too encouraging with some terrible dry and hard bhajis. Service good and meal packaged securely and well but it is after all the main course that matters. No, not awful, but disappointing.

After much deliberation we finally settled upon this kitchen for a takeaway. After an hour and a half, the food arrived (having been told an hour tops). We were overcharged by a couple of quid,I put it down to a tip. Then we notice one of our items were missing, possibly one of the cheapest things on the menue, a portion of chips for my 11 year old niece. So I phone them back and was told they would be here in 1 minute, the delivery dude was leaving the building as we spoke. 20 minutes later...I phone back to enquire as to the whereabouts of said chips, only to be shouted at for being such a 'clever' customer, as they accused me of lieing. I was told never to call them again and whilst I calmly asked not to be shouted at, of course he can't hear me because he's too busy SHOUTING AT ME! And then he actually threatens me with police action. After this guy then hangs up on me, I phone back again, I complained to another guy who initially seemed to deal with my upset quite well (though perhaps this was because he merely wasn't shouting at me!) I was told that delivering the chips was not proportionate to the bad service I received and that I was not to bother with them again. Well, quell surprise, I won't ever be calling these inadequate rude men again, and I suggest you don't either.

Old Mill Road in Torquay is perhaps just off the tourist itinery as one would have to drive or walk to find the 'Spice Cellar', which as far as i know is not on a bus route. From the sea front it is possible to walk there in ten minutes, quarter of an hour if you have short legs.My main preference is for hottish to very hot curries, especially during the winter months.A couple of years ago i found this place almost by accident on parking up Old Mill Road to visit 'Ancient Elements'. It was very cold so i ordered a beef vindaloo and was told it would take about 20 minutes. It was fascinating to watch the chef working on this through the open portal to the kitchen. I had the basic meal with a mixed vegitable bahji / curry plus a portion of onion salad. On bringing this home and gently warming up in the oven, my god, was it hot or not !To me the quality and quantity were both outstanding for a very reasonable price with more than enough for another meal the next day. It was a delight to find an Indian type takeway which includes beef on their menu as every Bangladeshi establisment i know of keep rigidly to lamb. After several more takeaways, where i was given popadoms and a bit of salad for no extra cost i realised that the curries created here stand good comparison with very many i've had long ago in the east end of London. For possible useful information, the owner told me he would only charge £2 for delivery to Paignton, however i guess there must be a minimum order for this.Like man in the film said : " i'll be back" !

Myself and some friends decided to order from this establishment after being persuaded into doing so by one of our colleagues, as we were assured we would not regret it and it would be heavily enjoyed. It was not heavily enjoyed. The food arrived after a long wait, which was sort of understandable considering the size of the order, however the delivery driver/order taker did not know the area very well, but after some explaining we were graced by the arrival of our gracious grub.Gracious it was not.Upon opening the tuppaware of curry a river of sauce cascaded onto the plates, unfortunately there was not enough chicken to balance this torrent of relatively bland sauce. The rice was plentiful, but very bland even though it was supposedly spiced, and the naan bread, well, lets just say it got better use as a frisbee instead, however it was quite a large frisbee at that.

I was treated to a meal from this take away recently but unfortunately I was extremely disappointed. The sauces were thick, bland and spineless while the meat (which did not seem to have been cooked in the sauce) was hard to find. In future I will buy from M and S at least I know that their quality is excellentl!

Having tried most if not all Indian Restaurants in Torquay the Spice Cellar was one I had not tried.I ordered a chicken vindaloo and a chicken phal. The portions were very large especially the curry sauce which was enough for two but the chicken pieces enough for one.I could not taste the difference between the two sauces. The best part of the meal was the rice. With all the other Indian Restaurants in Torquay I would not use the Spice Cellar again.John & Sue in Torquay

Awful, awful, awful Had to give a star to make this comment. Food arrived half hour to early from time booked. Ordered a banana dish, no banana, no flavour, meat so tough my jaw hurt from chewing it. Orderd a semi hot dish, so so hot could hardly eat and didn't finish more like a very hot madras. Naan bread...my advice...avoid. Thought we'd give this take away a chance as we always ordered from previous owners. Food then was excellent but delivery was poor. From this experience with the new owners we will definitely NOT be using them again.
