Soyami in West Berkshire

Yummy food, good service, attentive staff and very reasonable price. An amazing little gem in the centre of Newbury.

We haven't been to Newbury for more than a year, but today we were welcomed like old friends. The cuisine is a wonderful mix of Malaysian, Thai, Chinese and Korean. Cooked fresh and the spices are all there. Service is courteous and friendly. I've lived (and eaten) in Malaya, Thailand & Hong Kong, and this is the real thing. Great value for money. From the outside the restaurant doesn't look exciting, but for eating pleasure it beats all of Newbury's other far-eastern establishments into a cocked hat.

We went for bbq option but the portions were extremely small and artificially sweet which defeats the entire purpose. They didn’t even serve any side dishes i.e. rice, veggie which is quite normal with bbqs.

Absolute little gem and well worth a try. The Salt and pepper Calamari starter and the Katsu prawns were really good and the BBQ platter was full of flavour and so much fun to cook in a group. Make some time to pay this place a visit you will not be disappointed! A happy Korean BBQ’er!

This is our place for Saturday lunch. Quick service delicious food very reasonable prices. The lady at the restaurant is always smiley. You can’t miss it , it’s next to McDonald’s in Newbury town centre. chicken karaage is highly recommended.

The service was good and kind but the foods are not what I've expected. I think it is not a genuine Korean cuisine absolutely. If you expect to enjoy real Korean food, the restaurant is not for you.

Easy to walk past this place as it’s at the north end of town but this is easily the best restaurant in its class in Newbury. It’s not Indian, it’s not Thai, it’s sort of Chinese and Japanese fusion, the menu is not huge but that seems to be for good reason, they do what they do really well, super tasty and not that much expensive than others. Yes they do cost a bit more but this is more reassuring than anything else - worth it. Gets a full 5 stars from me and I’ll be back. Probably next week.

Newbury has virtually no decent Chinese/Japanese restaurant, Soyami is such a great restaurant, the food is always so fresh and tasty, and the BBQ pit option is amazing value for money, a must visit place

When Soyami first opened, food was fantastic and every meat seemed fresh, from then Soyami becomes one of our go to places. Now we ordered takeaways, like my usual order Teriyaki chicken veg stir fry noodles and my husband Chicken Katsu curry and Egg fried rice. It is so disappointing that Chicken meat tasted so old and egg fried rice was so greasy. I felt bad for my husband as he went straight to the toilet. It seemed that meal quality is going down hill. I felt like our money gone wasted.

Visited today, thursday 5.30 pm. Had korean BBQ cooked by us at our table. Food choices were good, there was plenty of it, we could order more as we went along. Wasnt sure of portion sizes , but for 5 of us worked out ok. Excellent service throughout our meal. Very helpful, would highly recommend, we will certainly go back. Could have standard meal choices if required.

Being coeliac it can be difficult to find many gluten-free dishes at restaurants. However, at Soyami the chef came to our table to explain which dishes could be adapted to be gluten-free. The dishes we chose were all excellent, as was the service. We'll definitely return !

Honest food and fair prices. Love the chicken katsu and I even value the food quality more after some direct competition opened in town.

Excellent visit on 25th June myself and three others we had the Korean bbq and it was out of this world ! I would recommend a visit !

Ordered the korean bbq for 2 people. It was absolutely delicious. It seemed a smallish portion at first - all sorts of raw meats sliced thinly - but once we started bbq-ing them at the table, we became full in no time. Rice and vegetables were replenished every time they finished. Best meal in a long time. The kimchi was absolutely delicious.

Fantastic experience. To start off, the space is beautifully clean, the staff is friendly and the food was fantastic. The set meal BBQ is fantastic value. So much for for £20 a head. We could not be happier. Will be coming back!

I can only comment on the BBQ option, the set meal, so this review isn’t helpful to vegetarians. I would recommend that you don’t go for it in a group of more than 4, as the American diner style seating around the BBQs would mean splitting you up. The set meal for two involves a ridiculously large quantity of raw marinaded meat, squid rings and a giant prawn, accompanied by as much rice, lettuce, seaweed and kimchi as you need. We had 3 set meals between four, which worked out just right. Cooking the food yourself in the middle of the table makes for a truly sociable evening. The waitress was very helpful and attentive. Reasonably priced and deserves to be more popular.

So happy we gave Soyami a try....we are very fussy with Asian cuisine and always worry it'll be usual ready made and cheap ingredients -- Soyami offers quality dishes for a decent price! The prawns are fresh and even included the coveted flavour most Westerners are not used to...they offer a quicker lunch menu but recommend their evening menu more. They have put thought into their main Menu dishes...we had the crispy squid and Seafood Ramen for a late lunch and staff are very friendly without being in your face...... cannot wait to try the Korean BBQ .... Happy to say Best Asian food in Newbury! SEPT 2020 Still going strong and we had one of our best meals today, BibImbap was on point! Proper hot dolsot bowl meant you get the crispy rice at the bottom, and beef was properly flavoured. Also had Duck Ramen and so happy with the tender duck slices, great stock and better noodles as not overcooked. Look forward to our next visit ! Oct 2021 Still the BEST Noodle joint in Newbury!! April 2022 We love the lady that works Front of House and all round staff/service. Always has a smile for the customers and knows the dishes. She's been here since Soyami opened and she's as cheerful as the day they opened. The place is so much better because of her.

Came here with a friend to try their Korean options (We’re both Korean) and we were extremely disappointed, the kimchi “stew” was not good at all and the bibimbap especially was terrible. What we received was basically sweet wet risotto like rice with big cuts of unseasoned vegetables, and no hate to the chef, because apparently by some of these reviews people seem to like it (likely because they have nothing to compare it to) but just don’t claim the food as “Korean” and maybe list it on the menu as a completely different dish. It’s sad when we think we finally get a little representation in this town but what we end up with is a restaurant that isn’t even trying to be authentic. :(

Absolutely hated my last experience there and won’t be returning for good. The waitresses looked like they didn’t want to be there, and were blatantly rude. Do your service better, treat people better and don’t discriminate them.

Tried to order this evening but was told that delivery had a minimum charge of £25. This seems like a lot considering we live in Newbury and within a mile of the restaurant. Soyami has really good food but has lost a customer as we dont see why we should have to add food that we dont want to build our order up from £23 to £25. Every other chinese in Newbury will deliver with no issues for an order of that value.

Bibimbap is excellent, as are the kimchi and seaweed salad starters. Seevice is frirendly, and efficient. Our first time there, and we shall be going back !

We ordered from the takeaway menu after reading the reviews and were not disappointed. Very efficient on the phone, cooked on time and delicious food. Nice to see some alternatives to the standard items normally seen and it has definitely convinced us to go and try dining in.

I went in for lunch during a weekday - food was delicious and really good sized portions (I ordered the large chicken teriyaki meal). Really tasty and great service, I’ll definitely be coming again!

Just popped in for lunch on a Saturday, the menu was written a bit strangely and did not describe the dishes all that well, also not set out in a lunch type way where what you are really looking for is a one dish for lunch type of thing. That said, we went for a dish called Bibimbap as it seemed to be a one bowl dish of rice and other toppings. It was absolutely delicious! I will certainly go in again for the same. Stone bowl, heated so it arrives sizzling with rice, beef, carrot, cucumber, bean sprouts, a sweet chilli sauce and topped with a fried egg and a touch of sea weed. Amazing lunch bowl of deliciousness! They just need to sort their menu out so people know what they are ordering 😁. Would recommend.

Overall one of the best kbbq places I've been to, good amount of meat for the price with unlimited kimchi, veg, rice, edamame and wakame (seaweed) salad. Will definitely return for more

Tasty, good portion sizes, do lunch and takeaway. not gormet but that's kind of why you go there. Most people in our office go there for lunch at least once a week

An excellent place to eat in Newbury. They offer a very good selection of Asian food. The Korean BBQ selection was very nice and offers a unique way to have a meal, by cooking it yourself. The staff are very friendly and welcoming. Highly recommended place to eat.

I go here on a regular basis for their lunch and dinner menu. Very lovely staff, amazing food and a great atmosphere. A hidden gem in Newbury. Will continue to dine here.

Love the food. But they need to change the times. The times they open or close are different. Which is confusing.

Staff were polite and friendly, the restaurant is nice clean and well decorated. The food was hideously slow coming out for us. Ordered two simple dishes, no starters or drinks, and we were waiting for 40 minutes! They did apologise profusely, so I have no problem with the staff at all, but the food was disappointing. After eating Japanese and Korean food for decades this felt nondescript and inauthentic. Not bad at all, I've had lots of bad, but very forgettable. The Yakiniku looked great but we weren't able to try that this time. Maybe next time.

Absolutely fantastic place. very clean and hand sanitizer on every table and see through plastic curtains to separate as well as good distancing from other diners. The food was amazing and the portions are epic(try the ribs and Korean barbecue that was my favourite) also tried Kimchi for the first time and it was amazing. The price was very reasonable and the staff were really helpful and friendly. Would recommend to everyone

4.5 stars! Had takeaway & food was ready in 20 mins - everything was well prepared, the sweet and sour chicken was lightly battered with chicken breast, the unagi was delicious & I was very impressed with the extra precautions + sanitary conditions! Will be back :)

Wonderful family run business that serves delicious homemade authentic Japanese food. The teriyaki chicken is delicious, portions are generous and it is affordable. They have a great lunchtime menu and dinner is also very nice when you can use the BBQs.
