Gurkha Chef Restaurant in West Berkshire

Great food and atmosphere, very busy which unfortunately made the delays on food arriving longer than we wanted. We were using trains and the delays meant we were clock watching , food though was good and all 6 enjoyed a variety from the menu . Would go again .

Excellent service and food was superb

Me and the wife went again after a long time since our last visit, glad we booked, Saturday night and the place was packed, the food was amazing and the service never dipped despite it being so busy, nice to meet Elvis’s brother. A superb restaurant with great food and service.

Had an amazing experience. Food and the services was super excellent!! Must try Gurkha Chef special, grilled chicken and lamp. We were treated very nicely by Bishal Gurung and his team. Great ambiance and the service was quick. Will be back soon.

As I was part of a large group I thought we had excellent service..trying to serve 18 at once isn't easy.... food could of been hotter but very tasty...definitely would go back

We had an amazing meal here. They accommodated a Chicken Madras, which was hot and the chicken was so succulent. The whole family enjoyed their meal. Highly recommended.

Food best I’ve had in a long time highly recommend

I tried this place last night as a solo diner with no reservation and the meal was outstanding. Starter of marinated was OK and perhaps too much for a starter. The main course of Staff Lamb Curry was one of the best curries I’ve ever eaten. Not overly hot but the flavours were just lovely. I’d go again without hesitation.

Been here a few times as a group, usually it’s pretty good, lots of options and it’s good quality, but had a disappointing visit recently. Food was quite bland, especially compared to usual. Took an hour for the mains to come out, had to ask where they were. Let the staff know at the end that the food wasn’t up to the usual standard, no spice in the food at all, and the waiter just argued that it’s not meant to be spicy and wouldn’t accept the critique, this was a dish we had across multiple visits and know what it should taste like. Asked for the bill 4 times before it finally arrived too, unfortunately a bad experience and we don’t see ourselves returning now.

My husband booked The Gurkha Chef for a date night treat for us both on Thursday 8th February. It was the first time we had eaten there and it definitely will not be our last as the food and service were outstanding. The restaurant has a lovely warm welcoming atmosphere and the tables were well spaced out and it was reasonably busy for a rainy Thursday night! We ordered the set menu for two it was reasonably priced and we were very impressed with the mixed starters and the main dishes, very generous portion sizes I would recommend you make sure you are hungry if you go for the set menu. We left feeling full and satisfied with both food and service. Lovely friendly, attentive and professional staff. Highly recommended and looking forward to our next visit.

Great meal out with hubby. Lovely warm friendly staff and atmosphere. Quick service but not rushed, great Gurkha beer. Excellent food and portions, really tasty and great selection of Napolese dishes very different to Indian curry dishes but still amazing tastes and variations of curry dishes, excellent starters of mixed fish and meats definitely recommend you order that though you need to be very hungry as generous portion sizes and you will be full before your mains arrives!

This was a restaurant that we had been recommended by a friend. I can confirm that the restaurant was very nice . It had a very nice calm feel very relaxing atmosphere.

El servicio fue muy rápido y luego tuvimos una agradable conversación con el personal. Desde luego nos encantaría volver, porque nos pareció que estaba todo brutal. 200% recomendable.

The Gurkha is still my go to when ever I want a tasty treat. The Garlic Kukhura chicken was so delicious and I’d love to know how they cook the Gurkha Bhat rice which has to be the tastiest, fragrant rice I’ve had. Lost count of the takeaways I’ve had from them since living here, definitely be ordering again

Genuine welcoming service, warm and friendly...could not thank them enough for having us short notice. Food was generous in portions and very good flavours for the curries. Highly recommend their mains as we ordered too much with starters on top of it. Will definitely visit again.

The restaurant was extremely busy but the staff managed it brilliantly. The food came out steaming hot, lovely hot plates and very tasty food. No complaints. There were people standing outside willing to wait for a table as it is so popular. I would always recommend that you book a table in advance. The staff are so polite, respectful and committed. A real treat to go there.

Had a table booked for 7 for 3 people...business was steady ...sat down nicely ...poppadoms sales made then drinks order then food ...all good so far . Starters finished , all very nice ..20 mins in poppadoms stale !! Mains brought out , two of us no cutlery, had to get up and ask . Mains finished all very tasty , within fives mins of finish asked when would be leaving? Five mins later would you like your bill ?? I.understand business is busy and tables required...but we had only been there 90 mins and still had drinks . Ten mins later bill given , no rush then ...we complained and asked for one round of drinks off as an apology. Ok after three different chats with three different people. Paid in cash and waited for change ( as if none returned would have been price of first bill with no drinks taken off) nothing came . Had to.go ask and was only given half change back ...by this point had had enough , didn't want to cause a scene , so left .VERY VERY DISAPPOINTED. NO RETURN IM AFRAID .VERY BAD SERVICE .

Great food - very quick delivery on a Saturday night

Cold! Do t mind paying prime price if good service and good food. This will be the last time we order from here. The call to the restaurant to check where the food was, was not a great experience. They had no idea what they were doing. Two people got more confused. Embarrassing to say the least. Shame. It was a great place to get food. I’m genuinely upset.

Food was fine, but we were rushed from the moment of arrival to departure ruining the meet up and food despite booking in advance. Having both travelled 30 plus miles to get there , our hopes of a relaxed meal were not to be.

Very short notice but we managed to get a large table on a Friday night. The place was buzzing, so busy. Service was quite good considering! The food was amazing. Really fresh. Full of flavours. The best restaurant.

Looking for dinner in Newbury we came across this restaurant. Unlike other restaurants in the town it was busy which is always a good sign. The staff were brilliant. Attentive and helpful. Menu was excellent, so was the food and the price reasonable. The lady owner is a star. Recommended.

Food here is amazing, and also delicious desserts and drinks. There is a separate children's menu. The staff is extremely friendly, sweet and smiling.

We haven't dined here for about a year it was always about average. This experience was superb. Fabulous attentative staff, kept us topped up with drinks as previously this was always very slow. The food was excellent and very tasty and well presented, they could not do enough for us. Well done Gurka Chef you've really upped your game, cannot wait to come back.

I’m officially addicted to the starter called “Khasi Keema” hence the four succulent photos! This resembles the more commonly known version of Seekh Kebab in an Indian/Bangladeshi restaturant. What makes these super good is you get three pieces not two and they come out on a sizzling iron dish - a bit like most authentic Indian restaurants USED to do but many bypass this piece of theatre to keep things easier (a big shame in my opinion). All the food at the Gurkha Chef is super tasty, great and the staff are superb, personable and always very pleased to see you…all in all it’s just fantastic. I really hope this review helps and pursuades you get to try the amazing KHASI KEEMA!!!

Hadn’t booked and walked in on the off chance. Though early in the evening there were quite a few tables in use. Really friendly staff and helpful too. The menu is Nepalese, so it is curry based but do not expect your standard curry menu. Lots of different dishes, some served sizzling. We had a selection of chicken lamb prawn and salmon served sizzling plus a similar dish in a medium heat curry. Rice pappadoms saag paneer and beers of course. All really tasty. Also ordered a take away which was ready for us when we finished. Great service, food and reasonably priced (very cheap for me as my son paid). Definitely will return

TA has 41 places better than this in Newbury, quite staggering! and really hard to believe there 10 better if that! This place is a Newbury Staple, open really good hours and run by a fantastic friendly team who can’t help you enough. We visited with some friends and had a really nice meal, with lots of good flavours, with beer and 2 bottles of reasonably priced wine, this worked out with a 10% tip at around£35 per head. Great value, great food and great service.

This time a lovely man took my order who was courteous and took time with my order. We ordered a Sherpa kakhura, hot and it was hot 🔥 which I like and a milder tarai kukhara which was still spicy. Good amount of chicken with a smooth creamy thick sauce. Chamsoor saag (saag Baji) which was the freshest most beautifully cooked spinach ever, a tad too much liquid tho. I asked for 2 very thin rotis bit still quite thick like naans but perhaps that's the nepalise way. And lots of mint sauce as it was needed to cool down! Came within the hour. Everything was fresh and delicious and still the best Asian food in town.

The food was delicious and the staff were very friendly. The roti and nan were crunchy and soft. We reserved the table using their website, and they responded quickly. It is the typical Indian cuisine they serve here. As soon as we seated, we were offered poppodums on the house with different sauces. Couldn't grt to the desserts as we were full, maybe next time.

We had a works team dinner here, a table of 15. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. The restaurant itself was busy with a few large tables other than ours. Food choices were good, with a few recommended items tried. Very tasty and great options for those that are not a fan of spice. This was my first time here, would definitely visit again. Would recommended.

Lovely, tasty food delivered at a good temperature and ahead of estimated time. Great as always, the Gurkha chef is one of my favourite restaurants in Newbury and has been for quite a few years now.

My favourite Indian restaurant in Newbury

Professional and friendly staff, As I am a Vegeterian, options were a little less, but whatever we had in dinner, it was amazing.

Visited here a few weeks ago on a Saturday night. Had a very nice time. Food was really good, really enjoyed the garlic naan bread. Nice popadoms and dips to start. Very nice house red also. Nice buzzy atmosphere, always seems to be busy so might be a good idea to book ahead. We didn't book ahead the night we went but they found a space for us which we were grateful for.

We have been to this restaurant a few times last year and was so impressed with both the food and service. Last night was rather disappointing and I felt the food standard has dropped significantly. It may have been a one off bad night, which I am hoping, or perhaps a stand in chef?, But I will try one more time next month and see if it is back to normal standard before writing it off as a favourite completely.

Have dined here many times and the food and atmosphere is always spot on. We had a wait between courses, particularly between starter and main, however, it was busy and we were quite a large group.

Great authentic Nepalese food. Best daal I’ve had in a takeaway. Could do with slightly more spice but very fresh and not greasy.

Was it because it was busy? I'm not sure but the food was really poor. I don't think I've ever had a curry that had no heat or discernible flavour. I've had better here before so I'm keeping the stars at 2.
