Gurkha Chef Restaurant in West Berkshire

The food here is excellent and in my opinion the best quality food experience in Newbury, the staff are always very friendly and efficient, I’ve never been disappointed in the many times I’ve eaten from here, highly recommended!

Amazing food and wonderful service

This is the best place to eat in Newbury. The dishes are all different but tasty. Different spices than an Indian, so tasty. The staff are amazing too 😊

A great restaurant. Lovely food, a little pricey but worth it

Waited 2.5 hours for our food. Driver got lost, we spent over an hour out on the street looking for him and on the phone giving directions. Restaurant claimed we had given the wrong postcode - we had not! We were staying at a holiday park only 2 miles from the restaurant, it should have been really easy to find. We'd spent £170 on a meal for 8 people. Food was obviously cold when we finally got it, so spent another 20 minutes reheating it, so was nearly 10pm by the time we ate, having ordered at 7pm. Restaurant refused to give even a partial refund, said we'd had extra poppadoms on the house so that was enough! They were incredibly rude on the phone. One of the worst takeaway experiences ever!! Food when we eventually got it was fairly good, nothing to write home about though and definitely not worth the wait!!!!

They made a concerted effort to stay open which we are absolutely blessed by. The lads in the Lion sent us and they were right to. Maybe too hot a challenge (my fault) but so enjoyable. The enemy was so happy that we acted out as a married couple and actually ate together. Better still. Great food. Thank you one and all.

We have ordered the two hottest dishes from the menu, Oh man hot, but delicious!!!!! Some of the best lamb and chicken I've ever tried!!!!

Fantastic food, super fast & friendly service, and Cobra and Kingfisher on draft. My only gripe with this is place is that, as usual, it was hotter than the sun inside. Still, an excellent meal and an enjoyable evening with family - thank you.

Still the best around Newbury.

We had a great experience here! The food was amazing, every dish was packed with flavor. The staff were incredibly welcoming, especially Bishal who greeted us with a warm smile and kept us laughing throughout the meal. Highly recommend!

We popped in for lunch and had a delightful experience. The greeting was very friendly and the follow up service was excellent. The food was delicious, generous portions and reasonably priced. A lovely experience. We will certainly return!

We visited the Ghurka Chef back in September. As always we had a great meal and fed that back to the waiter. He asked if we could give feedback so am happy to oblige. There’s not much to say really other than the food is really good and our service was excellent on the night. The 3 staff waiting on our table couldn’t have done anymore. We managed to get the kids off their devices and drag them kicking and screaming to the restaurant which they said they had no interest in “unless it was an Indian”. They had their staple tikka masala curry and they loved it. They’ve asked when they can go back. I can’t see it being that long - there’s a reason why we keep going back and have done for years.

Always good food, friendly and excellent service. Always seem to be able to fit us in, even when busy with no reservation made.

Brilliant staff and lush food! Took my Swedish brother and his partner which managed to accommodate well with amazing food and drink as always! Wanted to show them the diverse food that England can offer and Nepalese is something Sweden rarely has! Loved the very spicy lamb dish I ordered! Had that growing painful heat I desire in a dish! One in our company was vegetarian and absolutely loved her dish! Love showing this gem to people visiting the UK! Thanks again!

One of the warmest welcome you'll receive and some lovely food to match

Table booked at 7pm. Were rushed to get food ordered on multiple occasions. Practically no time between courses. Was asked at 7:50 when we would be leaving! Other staff were leaving drinks and tableware on our table while serving others on adjacent tables. Behaviour of other guests in the restaurant was embarrassing. Clearly the restaurant was busy-we have visited before and it is a popular restaurant. But seeing staff and other guests behave this way and then be pointed at by staff as if it was our fault we hadn't left the table made the entire experience atrocious. We had booked to celebrate a birthday. In and basically forced out after 75 minutes. If we had been told at the time of booking the table would only be available for a fixed period time - like less than 90 minutes - we would have chosen somewhere else. Food was good. Service and atmosphere was diabolical.

Tasty fish curry which makes a change as most restaurants don't do fish. Staff very friendly and helpful.

Well just another endorsement for the Gurkha Chef, went tonight and once again we can’t rate the food and service highly enough, if you haven’t tried this restaurant I’d really recommend you go, you won’t be disappointed.

The food is quite mediocre. We ordered the momos  and a chicken starter, which was average in taste. We ordered chefs special chicken curry on the bone that the waiter recommended which came with green peas which was neither  mentioned in the menu nor was informed by the waiter and it also came so dry that you couldnt possibly eat with Indian bread. When we complained, we were offered a barely edible super spicy curry with similar dry pieces of chicken that  came as starter. If you are looking for authentic food then this is not the place.

We were staying in The Chequers Hotel and their bar menu was average. So we googled Curry house. We found 20 seconds away this amazing Nepalese Restaurant. We both haven't tried it before. WE HAVE BEEN MISSING OUT ! The food was exceptional and the service was amazing. The owner was so happy to speak to us. We came back the next night after the races. We were very early (5pm) so got the window seat. Again, food and drink was exceptional and the owner came and remembered us. We need Gurkha Chef in Bristol !!!!!!!

I had the Lamb Saag dish. Everything hot, very delicious. Arrived quickly and they'd added some extra popadoms and salad. Top stuff.

Ate here last week when we passed through on our canal boat and it was recommended to us Food was amazing , so fresh and authentic, could taste every ingredient Highly recommended Wish the place was near us !! Great food , service and very clean

Easily one of the best restaurants in Newbury! The staff is kind and respectful, the food is incredible and the placer itself is well decorated.

It had been a while since we had take out and the food was excellent. We ordered the tandori prawns, chicken shashlik and potatoes with chickpeas. We will order again from Gurkha Chef, highly recommend. Well done to the staff.

Ordered food online, Sherpa chicken (very hot) it said very hot still i made an attempt to order thinking its never that spicy when we are so used to chatpate and panipuri but trust me it was the spiciest food i ever had in my entire life… Will definitely not suggest people to have it cuz its about the health concerns.But will definitely try more food from this place cuz food was actually tasty.

I recently had the pleasure of dining at the Gurkha Chef Restaurant in Newbury with my team. It was my second visit to the establishment, and I must say, they exceeded my expectations once again. The flavors are bold yet harmoniously balanced, creating a truly delightful dining experience.

1st class food, service and atmosphere . Will certainly visit again if ever back it the area.

Where to start... the staff are fantastic, it was my first time here and fancied something different. The guy that showed me to the table gave me some recommendations based on my comment of I like spice.... The Nepalese dish of Chicken liver was to be fair amazing. 10 out of 5, stunning. Sweet perfectly Cooked chicken livers in a really night hot curry sauce that looked well presented in a poppadom basket. For the main I had the staff curry with a Hot sauce (emphasis on hot). It was beautiful, lamb curry with mushrooms and peas. Nice and spicy without overpowering a beautifully cooked sweet lamb. The lamb was so tender it melted like butter. First visit but will be a regular haunt going forward. Really good price as well with poppadoms, starter, main and Naan bread and 2 pints coming in under 40 quid.

As an engineer on an emergency call out to this restaurant was a pleasure and a great experience with all the team very polite and friendly and a lovely courtesy meal which was still warm by the time I got home back to Frimley will definitely pop by soon for a sit down meal with the wife! The food was fresh, very well spiced, and we loved the flavours. We were made to feel welcome, and I highly recommend this restaurant.

Heard good things about this place and we weren’t disappointed. Large menu, cooked well, well presented, attentive staff, clean and bright premises. What more could you want? Comprehensive drinks menu. Nepalese based menu. Interesting and spicy, but not in the too hot category. Well worth checking out.

Went on Saturday night, used google to book the table and had a very quick response from the restaurant. Great to see this place busy, food and service was great (and at a reasonable price too!) One big call out was how good they were with a dietary requirement, they spent time explaining the dishes and making recommendations.

The food and service was excellent. We had number 58 and number 60, both lamb dishes, plus a mushroom side and a MisMas mixed vegetables side, and Basmati rice. Everything was delicious, and the wait staff were lovely.

Lovely staff, very busy so they were a tad stretched but food was fab.

Welcoming staff, a calming atmosphere and an extensive menu. I felt the chicken in the curry could be less dry, however the butternut squash and aubergine side dishes and momos were delicious.

Great food and atmosphere, very busy which unfortunately made the delays on food arriving longer than we wanted. We were using trains and the delays meant we were clock watching , food though was good and all 6 enjoyed a variety from the menu . Would go again .

Me and the wife went again after a long time since our last visit, glad we booked, Saturday night and the place was packed, the food was amazing and the service never dipped despite it being so busy, nice to meet Elvis’s brother. A superb restaurant with great food and service.

Had an amazing experience. Food and the services was super excellent!! Must try Gurkha Chef special, grilled chicken and lamp. We were treated very nicely by Bishal Gurung and his team. Great ambiance and the service was quick. Will be back soon.

We had an amazing meal here. They accommodated a Chicken Madras, which was hot and the chicken was so succulent. The whole family enjoyed their meal. Highly recommended.

Food best I’ve had in a long time highly recommend

I tried this place last night as a solo diner with no reservation and the meal was outstanding. Starter of marinated was OK and perhaps too much for a starter. The main course of Staff Lamb Curry was one of the best curries I’ve ever eaten. Not overly hot but the flavours were just lovely. I’d go again without hesitation.

Been here a few times as a group, usually it’s pretty good, lots of options and it’s good quality, but had a disappointing visit recently. Food was quite bland, especially compared to usual. Took an hour for the mains to come out, had to ask where they were. Let the staff know at the end that the food wasn’t up to the usual standard, no spice in the food at all, and the waiter just argued that it’s not meant to be spicy and wouldn’t accept the critique, this was a dish we had across multiple visits and know what it should taste like. Asked for the bill 4 times before it finally arrived too, unfortunately a bad experience and we don’t see ourselves returning now.

Great meal out with hubby. Lovely warm friendly staff and atmosphere. Quick service but not rushed, great Gurkha beer. Excellent food and portions, really tasty and great selection of Napolese dishes very different to Indian curry dishes but still amazing tastes and variations of curry dishes, excellent starters of mixed fish and meats definitely recommend you order that though you need to be very hungry as generous portion sizes and you will be full before your mains arrives!

My husband booked The Gurkha Chef for a date night treat for us both on Thursday 8th February. It was the first time we had eaten there and it definitely will not be our last as the food and service were outstanding. The restaurant has a lovely warm welcoming atmosphere and the tables were well spaced out and it was reasonably busy for a rainy Thursday night! We ordered the set menu for two it was reasonably priced and we were very impressed with the mixed starters and the main dishes, very generous portion sizes I would recommend you make sure you are hungry if you go for the set menu. We left feeling full and satisfied with both food and service. Lovely friendly, attentive and professional staff. Highly recommended and looking forward to our next visit.

The Gurkha is still my go to when ever I want a tasty treat. The Garlic Kukhura chicken was so delicious and I’d love to know how they cook the Gurkha Bhat rice which has to be the tastiest, fragrant rice I’ve had. Lost count of the takeaways I’ve had from them since living here, definitely be ordering again

Genuine welcoming service, warm and friendly...could not thank them enough for having us short notice. Food was generous in portions and very good flavours for the curries. Highly recommend their mains as we ordered too much with starters on top of it. Will definitely visit again.

Had a table booked for 7 for 3 people...business was steady ...sat down nicely ...poppadoms sales made then drinks order then food ...all good so far . Starters finished , all very nice ..20 mins in poppadoms stale !! Mains brought out , two of us no cutlery, had to get up and ask . Mains finished all very tasty , within fives mins of finish asked when would be leaving? Five mins later would you like your bill ?? I.understand business is busy and tables required...but we had only been there 90 mins and still had drinks . Ten mins later bill given , no rush then ...we complained and asked for one round of drinks off as an apology. Ok after three different chats with three different people. Paid in cash and waited for change ( as if none returned would have been price of first bill with no drinks taken off) nothing came . Had to.go ask and was only given half change back ...by this point had had enough , didn't want to cause a scene , so left .VERY VERY DISAPPOINTED. NO RETURN IM AFRAID .VERY BAD SERVICE .

The restaurant was extremely busy but the staff managed it brilliantly. The food came out steaming hot, lovely hot plates and very tasty food. No complaints. There were people standing outside willing to wait for a table as it is so popular. I would always recommend that you book a table in advance. The staff are so polite, respectful and committed. A real treat to go there.

Great food - very quick delivery on a Saturday night

Cold! Do t mind paying prime price if good service and good food. This will be the last time we order from here. The call to the restaurant to check where the food was, was not a great experience. They had no idea what they were doing. Two people got more confused. Embarrassing to say the least. Shame. It was a great place to get food. I’m genuinely upset.

Food was fine, but we were rushed from the moment of arrival to departure ruining the meet up and food despite booking in advance. Having both travelled 30 plus miles to get there , our hopes of a relaxed meal were not to be.
