The most amazing beef musaman curry ever! In a great little restaurant with super friendly service. Loved it!

We've been here a few times, this is definitely our favourite Thai in Newbury. The food is always tasty and the set menus offer a great selection. Booked for a table of 9 this evening, more than accommodating, the food arrived tasty as ever, warm and promptly. Along with table decorations for a birthday party - thank you

Not been here before and really pleasantly surprised. Arrived and had a great welcome as we entered the restaurants and promptly taken to our table. It is by no means the smartest venue in town but we were here to eat! Ordered a couple of glasses of wine from a reasonable wine list that was not over priced. We both went for vegetarian options and everything was absolutely superb! Shout out for the green curry and stir fried Broccoli. Everything was obviously fresh and cooked to order. Food was fantastic. Waitress was attentive, knowledgeable and considerate. We both loved it and will be back.

Food was excellent, service a little slow however it is evidently a very popular restaurant! Some very entertaining clientele as well made the evening very enjoyable. Definitely do! The crispy chili beef is excellent 👌

I visited Khon Kaen in Newbury last evening and had a delightful experience. I ordered the Pad Thai, which was exceptionally tasty with a perfect balance of flavors and an appealing presentation. The service was prompt and friendly, and the ambiance was warm and inviting. Highly recommend for anyone craving authentic Thai cuisine.

Fresh quality food, the beef brisket curry is to die for!

Eaten in here a bunch of times and the young male waiter told me the red and green curries were vegan, but they had shrimp paste in it. This is a serious issue for anyone with allergies and people making ethical choices. Won't eat here again now because of this. Don't lie to customers.

Some of the nicest Thai food I've had outside Thailand. The weeping tiger is such a flavour bomb and the curries are all rich and aromatic. What more could you want from an independent restaurant.

Lovely Thai restaurant serving traditional offerings amongst other overly westernised Asian Cuisines in town. Their service is always on point and take out process is hassle free.

Really disappointing. I had a good meal here last year but just had a takeaway and it wasn't great. The biggest issue was that my mum ordered a dish which had no mention on the menu of nuts being in it, but in reality it has cashews in which she is allergic to. That's the sort of oversight that can be really dangerous for some people. Thankfully she was able to eat around them to some extent but she still only felt able to pick at it. Also my dad's king prawn Pad Thai only included about three prawns. A real shame.

The moment we stepped into Khonkaen Thai restaurant, we were greeted by the friendly and welcoming staff, who immediately made us feel at ease. First time visit here. Small venue but full. Excellent food and wine and exemplary service. Very reasonably priced. Will definitely use again when we visit next year

Six of us had a fantastic meal here after a day at the races. We opted for one of the set menus (B) for 5 of us and our veggie friend chose a few dishes off the main menu. There was plenty of food and all of it was very tasty. We were all raving about the place which will now be our go to restaurant for our annual trip to the races (our previous restaurant (Jade Cottage in Thatcham) having closed down 😢).

Food all fine, found ourselves waiting for service occasionally.

We love Thai cuisine, and really enjoyed this restaurant. The food was authentic, and the service was warm, welcoming and professional. Both of us felt compelled to write this review as we normally do not bother. It was that good. Highly recommend it.

Maybe we ordered wrong but the first course was disgusting, we ordered a set menu and the first course was soggy prawn toast along with spongy wet Thai fish cakes, second course was slightly better, the service was ok but the staff weren’t exactly friendly. I don’t think I would try this experience again.

The foods were amazing, and the price was very affordable. I highly recommend this place. I feel like it’s so underrated because when I was there, it was so quiet. Definitely deserves more recognition.

Cannot fault the food, we had a take away so can’t comment on the restaurant. The crispy beef was amazing, large portions and really tasty. Can’t wait to eat from here again. Good value too.

Excellent quality food, not tasted Thai curry that good since Thailand in '92😲 Massaman curry is excellent. These guys know what they're doing. They were really busy the race night we went so service was slowish but my goodness the food was well worth the wait. Very good value for money and very polite service. We will be back.

We really wanted somewhere new for date night. We’ve lived in Reading a long time and have tried everywhere so thought we’d try Newbury. It was certainly worth the drive. The restaurant is very “Thai” in decor. The staff are unbelievably friendly but the food is not just the normal Thai food you get in most restaurants , it’s real Thai food. We’ve been to Thailand a lot and haven’t experienced such lovely food in Thailand. Thank you for the fantastic service and amazing food.

Great place to eat in Newbury. Helpful, friendly staff, great attention to detail (accommodated my partners allergies and assistance dog with no awkwardness.) Good food, (Massaman Curry & Pad Thai) . We regret not having time for a dessert or starter, but still have those to look forward to next time!

Very good food. Dishes that stated they would be spicy, most deffinately were. Reasonably priced for a town centre restaurant. They have air con but chose not to have it switched on, despite the 28 degree temperature. I get that it is fitted on a wall directly over 2 of the tables and, as such, diners on that side would be cold. That is not a huge help to those of us on the other side. Maybe a rethink of the air con or table arrangement. Overall, a good evening.

We decided to stop off in Newbury for the night to break the journey back home to Wales from Stansted airport, after a quick look at Tripadvisor to see what restaurants we had to chose from we decided on Khon kaen and we weren’t disappointed, our meal was absolutely delicious everything was cooked perfectly proper authentic Thai cuisine, excellent friendly service and a nice cosy atmosphere, we would highly recommend this restaurant and the next time we are in the area we will definitely be calling in again.

This is a family run business where The food is very flavoursome and traditional (not as hot as Thai food but then that is probably a good thing) and the service is excellent

Tasty curries, but very thin, I would have given a 4 except for the stick rice which was terrible - a tiny bag of rice taking up a third of a regular sized takeaway container, not sticky but squashed into an inedible lump.

Had not been to this restaurant for some years and now regretting it! It was really busy on a Wednesday night always a good sign. The food was excellent and really authentic and fresh. We had the mixed starters and the salads, weeping tiger, prawn with tamarind and red prawn curry all totally delicious. Great service also.

We were the only couple in there at 5:30pm opening so we were slightly sceptical but wow did it soon get busy!!! The food was absolutely incredible and so full of flavour. The staff were so attentive, helped us choose food to our taste and were so friendly without imposing too much over our date. Would definitely go back and recommend to anyone going to Newbury.

We always seem to forget this wonderful little restaurant, mainly because it’s tucked away at the quieter end of town. If intimate atmospheric and authentic is what you are after, look no further. The food is also top quality, the Weeping tiger never fails to impress.

Very good food, but a little spicy for one of our party. Personally, I thought spice level was expected for good Thai food. Service was good, particularly in recommending the right number of dishes for us. Great wine too, at reasonable (restaurant) prices. Could have done without the deliveroo drivers coming in and out - a bit distracting to an otherwise very nice evening.

Four of us went for an evening dinner. We had the set menu A for two and the set menu B for two. What a great selection of dishes. Beef in black bean sauce fabulous, Thai curry excellent (spicy too) sweet and sour great. The service was slow but you know it really did not matter. A nice selection of wine too. Its very small and cosy. Why not 5* well the seat bases were collapsing which made you sit a bit low, and the service was slow (30 mins to get the opening drinks). But we recommend it and will go back.

We were really looking forward to our first takeaway meal from the Khonkaen for some time as they have only recently re-opened , however it was a huge disappointment the food was to put it politely less than average and the chicken starter was awful...

Terrible take away delivery service was looking forward to the food, but order was cancelled 15 minutes before it was due to be delivered, I called the restaurant to be given the most vague excuse about it being cash on delivery and to contact just eat, I offered to collect the food but was told I couldn't. Very disappointed in the service as was looking forward to using this restaurant.

We've already been twice since KhonKaen has been back open and the food was incredible. The service is always great too. Hands down this is the best Thai restaurant for miles.

We’re so happy this restaurant is back open again. We visited on Saturday evening and the food was as good as ever. Delicious starters and mains, very friendly staff. Look forward to returning soon!

After an extended break, the KhonKaen is back open and dare I say it better than it was?! Or perhaps I've just missed the wonderful and consistent quality of their authentic Thai cooking? Either way we are very pleased they are back open :)

Update 24/feb/22 The restaurant has been temporarily closed since end of December. Good food, but sometimes under staffed. We like their coconut soup, but the pad thia has repeatedly disappointed. It could be so much more.

I regularly get a takeaway from here, always very friendly service and the best Thai food I've had anywhere. Can recommend the tom kha soup and phad khee mao stir fry.

A disappointing experience. On arrival at 8.20pm after requesting table for one, the waiter looked into the seating area which was busy and glibly informed me they were closed, when it obviously wasn’t. Maybe I was over dressed for the establishment being in a suit...

Service and decor was great but unfortunately the let down here is the food. Had the Pad Kee Mao noodles and while it did have the spicy kick both the flavour/sauce and noodle type was far from correct. Moral of the story - if you don't have the right ingredients don't put it on the menu.
