Visited here with a friend for lunch. We both choose the Lasagne which said it came with salad. When we started to eat the Lasagne it was cold and the salad was a few rocket leaves. We took them back and they heated them in the microwave for us . They were slightly warmer but not hot , not much meat and full of carrots. Shame, won’t be visiting here again and it wasn’t cheap

I went to visit the cathedral today with my parents and the staff inside the cathedral was lovely and the place beautiful. After we left we went to the cathedral Caffè my first impression was good, as the first person who took my order was very polite and friendly but unfortunately the boy that was doing the coffee wasn't, I order 3 lattes just resive 2 I told him (kindly) i order 3 lattes he replied in a rude way you pay only for 2, i think he was the "supervisor". twice I have to tell him that I pay for 3 lattes and the guy who took my order kindly say to him yes she pay for 3 the guy never apologised to me even did not make the latte just told the girl next to him do the latte for her, I know people make mistakes but this barista was quite rude and need to learn how to talk to the costumers kindly.

A refectory refers to a dining room in a church or monastic institution. The Southwark Cathedral is an ancient church, it is likely that William Shakespeare and his company worshipped here. The Refectory at Southwark Cathedral is open during the day. It serves baked goods and hot meals, and delicious coffee. It' certainly well worth dropping in if you are in this area, south of the Thames.

I've always enjoyed coffee at the cathedral cafe in the past . A lovely warm refuge on a cold day . However I was rather disappointed on my last visit. 6 quid for heinz 57 variety vegetable soup a slice of bread and small amount of butter. Whilst perfectly acceptable and pleasant food in a not for profit cafe, I'd expect something better for the price charged. Add a hot drink to the meal brings price just shy of £10. Disappointed with new concession running the cafe.

£13 for two cafe lattes, oen sausage roll and a raspberry jam doughnut. Probably the nicest dougnnut I have ever tasted. Delicious dough, fried to perfection and the jam like freshly crushed rasberries. But the doughunt was £4! Really nice cafe. UIt uis now called (or was when we arrived) The Breadahead Bakery at the Southwark Cathedral Cafe. Very pleasant however, and a million times ncier than the hard Sky Lounge gthat we went to in the afternoon.

This cafe is an old haunt of mine and has been revamped several times over the years, but its latest re-jig has resulted in making it worse and not better. The range of food has been cut dramatically and the prices have been increased - also dramatically! I had what was advertised as pepper, carrot, and chickpea curry with rice which was just the ingredients in a sauce that was completely bland, not a curry at all, with no trace of any spices, and the dish was luke-warm. My companion's quiche and salad was OK, and the best bit for me was the chocolate and hazelnut brownie which was moist and delicious. I may come back for coffee and a cake, but never for lunch.

Rejigged and changed furniture but still a peaceful and benign cafe. The previous wooden furniture has gone especially the large long group table(s) that was down the middle. The replacements are a bit utilitarian and some small banquette seats have arrived but more importantly the food and drink is still good value and tasty. The space is perfect for braking off from the trail downstream along the south bank or of hectic journeys through London Bridge station.

We have visited The Refectory on several occasions which offers light lunches, cakes and various hot and cold drinks. It offers a outside seating on a summer’s day in a haven of quiet in a busy area. The only real negative side are the toilets which are down a flight of stairs and despite a notice that they are checked regularly are messy with overflowing sanitary bins.

We went in here to escape crowds at the market. We had visited years ago, but it has obviously gone "upmarket" since then. The tea was good, but my orange and almond cake was bland and quite hard to get through. My partner had a fruit scone and was given the meanest portion of butter imaginable. It was quite dry with just a tiny smear of butter. Not recommended.

Southwark Cathedral is one of my favorite places in London. It’s not high on the list of sites for tourists to visit, so it’s often not crowded. The same can be said of the cathedral’s café. Tucked away on the side of the cathedral, the café seems to be a secret that only the locals know about. Even though we are not locals, my husband and I have taken lunch several times at the café, and each time have thoroughly enjoyed our experience. The food options are not expansive, but the selections are fresh and well-priced. It’s lovely to have a quiet spot to sit in the shadow of a historic building and savor a delicious and inexpensive lunch.

After visiting the Refectory before, we expected an enjoyable relaxing break to our busy morning. However, the service and the quality of food were both below par. The fresh coffee was enjoyable but that's where the qualities end. The cakes were dry rather than fresh and the service was disappointing. After asking if there was anything to help ourselves to the cakes, ie plates and cake slices, the reply was 'yes' with a rather patronising look. The scone was served plane with no butter or jam and the Victoria sandwich tasted dry. Perhaps we caught them on a bad day but that's no excuse.

The Voucher venue stated "The Rectory", not "The Refectory", which caused a lot of confusion and waste of time looking for the place.A lovely venue and staff. The waitress was very pleasant, efficient and helpful. The Tea: the bread was stale and the fillings very, very basic. Not even some cream cheese with the cucumber. The scones were very good, but not clotted cream and a good selection of cakes from the counter which had been cut in half - I thoroughly recommend the flapjack to the point I bought some to take home! A good pot of Tetley's - coffee was also on offer. Even for the Groupon price of £18.00 for two, this wasn't really worth it. A shame really - it was the sandwiches which let it down. An annoying point was that three people were holding a business meeting, which did disturb the peace. A great location for Borough Market though.

After a busy morning in and around Borough I just wanted a nice cup of tea and a snack without any fuss. The refectory is fairly new I'd say and is clean and bright but still has a sort of church hall feel about the place. The seating is at tables for two or four plus a big refectory table in the middle of the room, so if you are feeling sociable then you are guaranteed to have someone say hello. You can access the refectory from inside the cathedral or from the street directly. It's typical counter service though hot meals are brought to your table. I only had a green tea and scone which was OK [looked better than it tasted], but for the price great and they invited me to top up the tea pot with hot water if I wanted to. One really nice thing was that having slumped down with my tea to rest my aching feet and relax a bit there was no rush or pressure to move on that you might feel in other establishments.

The Refectory in Southwark Cathedral is a perfect place to take lunch or each evening supper when you are touring London's Southbank. It is the best value, good service and a great atmosphere.

We were delighted to join with our niece at her wedding held in Southwark Cathedral. It's an oasis of peace and calm in an incredibly noisy area. The service was rich in choral worship and the cathedral clergy and staff were obliging in make this a memorable day. After the marriage service guests retired to the cathedrals cobbled courtyard for photographs and an extended time of champagn and nibbles on a splendid sunny afternoon. Cathedral visitors may also be interested in the history of the cathedral some of which was well explained to me by one of the volunteer staff and exhibits from the archeological digs

Went along for drinks and barbecue one summer afternoon. Drinks and service were fine, but the barbecue (I had a burger) was disappointing and poor value for money. The burger was small, obviously a commercial bought-in product. An indifferent bun, with a smear of relish, but no lettuce, onion or other trimmings. A thin slice of processed cheese was an additional £1 on top of the £8 burger. Fries were an extra £2 and it looked as though someone had taken half of mine. Obviously the cook hadn't made enough, and couldn't be bothered to make any more. It is in a very nice setting, but there are lots of better quality and better value places nearby.

Perfect spot for a summer drink as you are walking along the south bank. Stopped here on a sunny Saturday when everywhere else appeared to be rammed full. The drinks are of reasonable price and we weren't hurried at all. Plenty of space to sit inside and out.Would definately come again!

What a beautiful setting, really nice refectory with courtyard seating. Very much in keeping with the building.Just wanted a light afternoon tea and the display really made our mouths water. While the flapfack was superb the victoria sandwich had clearly been out far too long and was extremely stale. As I took it back the person behind the counter remained busy until the supervisor arrived and saved them! There was a swift apology and it was promptly replaced by carrot cake which, sad to say, was not much better. All this would have been forgiven if the pot of tea had made two full cups: what is the point of a pot that only makes one and a half?

This was a welcome find as we were strolling down Southbank on a cold windy summers day. Situated in a courtyard we were able to sit in the sun out of the breeze and enjoy the BBQ ribs and salad. Really tasty and very good value.

Somewhat tucked away in the cathedral complex, the refrectory is big but the choices small and the prices somewat steep. With a more inspirational operator, this could be a great place to refresh both mind and spirit. As it is, we regard it as somewhere quiet for tea or coffee and a slice of cake.

We paid £14 for two a BBQ dinner for two people. We got a choice of meat, side and a drink, it was good value but the meat was so chargrilled it tasted like charcoal. I got lemon chicken skewers and I could not taste the lemon. The potato salad was nice and the pimm's drink was too. I'm normally easy to please but it honestly wasn't all that nice. I would not be happy if I had have paid full price for this meal.

Southwark Cathedral is easily passed by as you walk along the river bank. Yet inside is a haven of calm - and tucked round the back a rather good refectory.Home made cake, decent coffee and tasty salads aplenty. The hot pasta dishes and chips were also good, and very reasonably priced for the area. Service is with a smile, and there's a lovely courtyard outside for a sunny day.

We stopped here for a coffee and a cake on a Sunday afternoon. Lovely well set out cafe which has delicious looking hot food, salads and sandwiches... We had a coffee and scone with cream and jam... Scone was lovely, the coffee was the strongest I've ever had in my life! I guess nice if you like it that way but a bit much for me! Lovely cathedral too :)

We friend and I visited Southwark Cathedral Refectory with a Group On voucher, we paid £15 which would include a glass of Prosecco - apparently this was a half price deal. The person at the counter took our voucher and we sat down, and then someone else came up to us and asked for our voucher. The Prosecco came quickly, then the sandwiches arrived with scones, when I say sandwiches I mean that term very loosely - we had six small quarters between us, I would not say much more than two slices of bread, and you could not taste what was inside as the contents were sooooo thin, but after a long debate we concluded that it there was salmon, beef and cucumber in the sandwiches - I still don't think it was beef though, then we turn to the scones and cakes - every single cream I have been on you have a pop of jam and a pop of clotted cream (and I have been on a few) - the scones were already made up, the cream was not real cream and the jam was more of a sweet spread and the scones were undercooked in the middle. The cakes (two of them) were tiny and very hard - I think one was a chocolate brownie and the other was a lemon tart - they were so small you did not need to bit them as they were one small mouthful - and there was a couple of miniature marshmallows on the plate, not sure why, maybe decoration - but they were hard so probably used for decoration over several days. We had to try and catch the eye of the waiter for the coffee and tea, there was theme with this cream tea tiny, the cups were not much bigger than an eyewash container. We asked the waiter if we could have more sandwiches - he said no - we said that we were appalled at the size of the sandwiches and the scones and he said that lots of people have said that - so we said so why doesn't someone do something about it, he shrugged his shoulders. We then spotted the refectory manager and we made the same complaint to her - she said that there was nothing she could do but offered us another glass of Prosecco. We were in such a bad mood when we left there (probably bought on by the hunger pains) that we completely forgot to have a look around the Cathedral. We have we learnt from this - definitely definitely read the reviews before you purchase vouchers of this type again.

My friend and I who regularly go on afternoon cream teas, purchased the voucher through Groupon. On arrival we were told to sit in the reserved area - but no tables had a reserve sign on them so we sat where we wanted to. We were brought 2 warm fizzy prosecco's followed by a 2 tier cake stand for our cream tea! We wondered if this was for one person and another stand would come along. On the top tier were 6 (ie 3 each) miniscule 1/4 sandwiches - approximately the size of a 10p each - cucumber, beef (apparently) and salmon (also apparently). On the lower stand were 2 scones (1 each) already cut in half and had a tiny amount of jam and some sort of squirty plastic cream in them. There was also a tiny lemon tart, the size of a 1p and a marshmallow, the size of an old 1/2p coin for those that can remember them. All in all, food enough to feed a sparrow. We complained and asked for another lot of sandwiches and were told this would not be possible, although this is normal practice for afternoon teas.We didn't even get any tea until we asked! Then they brought a small pot of hot water and tea bag.Never, have we never had such an awful tea, which with just a few changes could have made all the difference: at least 4 sandwiches would have been acceptable, the scone not cut in half and therefore stale, but brought whole and with a separate pot of jam and cream. Plus a proper pot of tea.In all the disappointment we forgot to visit the cathedral!

I have an occasional lunch here when I can afford the time from work. Usually a nice section for lunch - quiches and salads and lovely breads. The environment is light and airy - you can sit outside too if it's not too cold. Perhaps not the cheapest for lunch but makes a nice change from the local expensive restaurants.

I popped into the cafe after a busy day in London - I was there about three-ish in the afternoon. I got a table and went up to the counter to order my food. A friendly woman asked me with a smile: "And how was your day?"I nearly keeled over with surprise because she sounded genuine!I had a salad and a mineral water. The salad was huge and delicious - you can chose what you wanted in it i had couscous and beans and potoatoes, tomotoes, cucumber. they got a nice choice there.I was able to recharge my batteries in this small peaceful space tucked away at the side of Southwark's ancient Cathedral.Great place to go by yourself and chill out. The vibes are friendly cafe, elderly women having a gossip, young women by themselves reading at a late lunch break, a few older blokes with rucksacks and bad hair cuts. Warm red walls, vaulted ceilings, delicious homemade salads and sandwiches, 'kill any diet' -cakes, teas and coffees. They also serve wines. Pale wood no-nonsense scandinavian tables and chairs. The bathrooms are down a narrow stairways.I really liked the vibes. No pretence, welcoming. I paid six quid for the massive salad (I think I ordered the small one) and the mineral water. A good spot to know.I will be back.

My partner booked this afternoon treat for my best friend and myself as a treat. He paid £18 via Groupon and we were really looking forward to our visit. When we arrived the staff took our details and told us to sit anywhere there was a reserved sign. Within 5 minutes we were offered our glass of fizzy wine. My friend and myself were happy with that as we have been on plenty of afternoon tea visits before. Then our sandwiches and sweets were brought over to us. We were shocked. You couldn't really call them sandwiches as they were roughly 2cm by 2cm. There were three of these each, cucumber, beef and salmon. We could not taste the fillings as there was too much margarine. We turned our attention to the cakes which were no bigger than the sandwiches. We had two pieces each. There was also a tart with a lemon filling, great you might think, except it was the size of a two pence piece, and as hard as nails. Next was the scones. They were hard around the edges and very soggy in the middle where the cream and jam were. We guess they were made a long time before we arrived. We were offered tea, but we had to ask what we're the options. When the tea was broth over I had a normal tea and my friend had a berry. The pots they came in were tiny and only made two tiny cups each. We were not offered anymore, in fact the staff did not talk to us after bringing us our tea. Not even a goodbye. The thing that annoyed us the most was if we had just walked in off of the street you could of ordered a baguette and a pot of tea for £5. An afternoon tea should be a special treat, but this experience left us lost for words. I would recommend not to opt for the afternoon experience.

We were looking for a cafe on a drizzly Sunday afternoon and passd several heaving chain coffee bars before venturing into Southwark Cathedral and finding The Refectory. We just wanted traditional English tea and home made cakes and found exactly that at a very good price. The room was warm and the staff were friendly but there was hardly anyone there. There is also an outside courtyard but not much use in the rain. Come here and support the Cathedral, and independent cafe, rather than the chains.
