Sonny's Street Food in Charnwood

With the simple decor inside and outside I thought I had discovered a hidden gem, however it turned out to be somewhat of a disappointment. The food we ordered both in taste and portion size, prices were slightly more expensive than other local Asian food options. What really did put me off what the poor service, ignoring customers, busy chatting with other staff loudly and when eventually got a response, was almost rude to be point of of being too much much trouble for them.

The last two times my husband and I went to Sonny’s we both had a dodgy stomach afterwards, despite the food appearing good to taste and look on the surface. My husband said my stomach only reacts like this when there is a hygiene issue- we then proceeded to check Sonny’s food hygiene standards rating and it was one star out of five. This is completely unacceptable for a restaurant that has been open for more than a year. When we asked for a milkshake we also witnessed them breaking the ice on the kitchen floor and we received plates with dirty fingers marks. We will not be returning until the stars are at least three. There is no other place in Loughborough with such a low rating.

We are avid Thai food lovers, and because of that I can say I have become a good cook of Thai food . I can highly recommend this place, not aesthetically 5 stars but if you are after flavour , it’s the right place. Anusha - from Shepshed Loughborough

My daughter took me to this place due to what she heard regarding the food. I only gave the 5 star review on the food as all the dishes was amazing. Definitely authentic Thai food made with love. Unfortunately the service is very poor! Had to ask for menu etc... Definitely try this Thai food if in Loughborough.

The most authentic tasting Thai food in Loughborough. As I guy who spent 5 years living in Thailand I rate the massaman curry as the best I’ve tasted outside Siam. The staff are friendly and the price is on the money. My only improvement would be the portion size, perhaps a bit on the smaller size. Still doesn’t stop the restaurant being top notch.

Sonny’s is our sons favourite restaurant in Loughborough as a student and he was very keen for us to go. We were not disappointed, the Thai street food was excellent and service with a smile. You may pass Sonny’s by if you do not know it but definitely worth the visit.

Very good value for money. Excellent service. What more can you say authentic Thai cuisine? Went to a restaurant down the road cost twice as much. It was salty. Cheap Tesco’s brought products nearly anywhere as good.

The food has always been great here but last time we came the service was super slow. Not any more. We went this weekend and the food was great, the service was outstanding and where can you get food for this quality for two for less than £30 nowadays? Nowhere, that's where!

My boyfriend took me for lunch here today and I cannot wait to go back! We had a starter and main each which was so generously portioned I had to bring some home (lucky me!) . Lots of choices on the menu and lovely staff, what a gem.

My boyfriend & I visited on a Saturday evening. We ordered a few starters and 2 mains to share, all of the food was exceptional, the flavours were very authentic and it was all served hot and fresh. The Phad Thai was made gluten free as per our request. The staff were helpful and friendly. The only downfall and reason why I didn’t give them 5 stars is because we waited an hour for our food, and the starters and mains all came at the same time. We will definitely be back to try more from the menu. Hopefully we won’t have to wait as long for the food to arrive.

Had a takeaway tonight from here and did not disappoint. Food is great and great price too! Cant recommend sonnys enough one of the best places to eat in loughborough!

We've been raving about Sonny's restaurant, but have to post a negative review for their take away service. We've only had 3 during lock down and had no reason to complain. But these were ordered on a Friday, the last was on a Tuesday. Do they use the same chef every day, as our beef Massaman was so greasy and tasteless? I'm sure we/they could have done better! Sorry guys, I leave a better review when we get back to normal and I can visit you in person.

What's not to like about Sonnys? Authentic, fresh food, reasonably priced, served with a smile and take your own alcohol if you like! Totally recommend this place and easy to find too.

Had a lovely Thai takeaway from here at the weekend. Arrived ahead of time and was full of flavour with very succulent chicken.

I was looking for an authentic Thai food restaurant with good reviews and found this gem.We took the train from Leicester especially based on the reviews and so that we could have a drink and feel relaxed.What a charming place Sonny’s is. Simplistic, modern surroundings and charming and engaging staff.We had the tempura king prawns and fish cakes to start, followed by a King prawn red curry and King prawn noodle dish. The flavours, ingredients and balance of flavours were wonderful.I wish we had a similar restaurant in Leicester and I’d definitely dine here again.

Visited again last night. Once again the food was delicious, piping hot, plentiful, was served quickly and at a very reasonable price. Will definitely be coming here again.

My friend recommend me to go here for Thia food, and the food is really great. You gotta come if you like Thai food, believe of not, I love it.

Visited sonny's again with my son on 27th November. Arrived at 6.30pm and were invited to sit where we liked. Took our own beer as it isn't licenced. I ordered Prawn cakes for starters and Thai green curry and rice for main. Both were absolutely delicious and piping hot. Extremely good value too. Will definitely return. Many thanks.

Honestly the best Thai food I’ve had outside of Asia. I have been here multiple times and they have never disappointed! Even serving my favorite Thod Man Kung (Prawn Cakes), which I have not been able to find in any other Thai menu in the UK.

Visited Sonny’s for the second time last week. First visit two years ago I was not that impressed. However I am glad I tried it again because the food has improved greatly and we all enjoyed our starter and main course during this visit.

So happy to find a good authentic Thai restaurant with mango sticky rice!! Loved the pork here too as well as the Tom yum soup!

A surprise night out for my birthday at Sonny's Street Food was really great. Good atmosphere serving food to all age groups in clean surroundings . The tasty food was not out of this world expensive.

Well what a find this place was, seems like a cafe but they service wonderful tasty Thai food would highly recommend the masaman and the crispy pork in spicy sauce

Food very good indeed and great value. This is more busy café than restaurant vibrant and noisy was very busy on the night and service a bit slow. Owners children playing and running in and out all the time a bit irritating as our table by the door.

I came here again with my daughter a week after my last review of this restaurant when I gave it 4 stars. This time around it was excellent and thoroughly deserve 5 stars! Ordered the Gang Panang which is a type of chicken curry with rice and it was absolutely top notch. The best curry I’ve ever had in a Thai restarant in the UK. Also had the Pohpia which is a Thai version of spring rolls and it was the best spring rolls I’ve had in any restaurant anywhere in the world. My daughter had the Tom Kha and noodle soup (can’t remember what it’s called) and they were excellent too. The ice coffees, which were also good, makes this place different from other Thai restaurants which wouldn’t typically have them. This place is really good!

A leaving party from work and there were 10 of us. We all enjoyed the food. I had Spring Rolls and then Chicken in black bean sauce. Sauce was ‘runnier ‘ than my local Chinese, but this was Thai and absolutely delicious. I’ll be taking a takeaway or two home after work in future! Slight negative was they don’t have a license to serve alcohol,so those that weren’t driving got a bottle from the local supermarket which they were able to consume with their meals. 5 Stars. Thank you Sonny’s.

Since our boy joined Loughborough university last year, we've been vising the town regularly and are always trying to find great restaurants here. This is the best place yet!.

Regular visitor at this place due to the great tasting food and friendly staff. Have got to know them all well over time and they always look after me very well.

Having worked in Thailand for 4 years, I get regular cravings for authentic Thai food. The food at Sonny’s is as close to authentic as I’ve found in the UK. Prices are very reasonable - definitely worth a try.

This has to be one of my favourite places to eat in Loughborough! Authentic food which all tastes so fresh! Staff are friendly and the place itself has a nice little cafe feel to it rather than a chain restaurant. Reasonably priced meals too! Would definitely recommend!

We had pad Thai noodles, the noodles were a bit over cooked. The food was fine, to be fair it was good value and the staff were friendly.

Visited this street food café for the fist time this week after hearing many great reports about it. On arrival, we were seated immediately, the waiter was very efficient and friendly and the menu choices were amazing - so much to choose from. There are small photos of each dish in the menu so you can see how it looks.

Really enjoyed our family meal here, really good value. Portions were not massive which was great for us. Take your own booze on and pay a corkage, not sure what this was but our meal was very reasonable priced. Would definitely recommend.

Mmmmm I really liked that.... actual. The food was scrumptious and the waitor with the man bun treated us with such delight! I belive his name was Gunnchaa. He stuck us right there at the window and we enjoyed the Pla Rad Prik and Pad Kra-Prao which had such deepr and intense moist flavours.

The food is utterly stunning, full of flavour and quantity... Offering many different dishes, all with vegiterian options available, be that Quorn, mushrooms or mixed veg. It's cheap, and it's gorgeous. Simply the best Thai restaurant in Loughborough!

The restaurant is quite simple with wooden tables and chairs. The food however is very tasty and extremely reasonably priced. The chicken salad (Larb gai) starter and the green chicken curry (gaeng kaiw wan gai) are both very nice.

We went to Sonny’s to celebrate a birthday. I took the surprise birthday cake and candles in ahead of time ready for the traditional lighted singing birthday cake event. The food was delicious and so once the plates were cleared I sat with my children in anticipation for the ‘surprise’ birthday cake arrival, wondering what they would do in this restaurant - would they put a silly hat on the birthday boy or play happy birthday music with sparklers on the cake ... would the whole restaurant sing?? No the cake came out and was placed on the table in its box and they handed me the packet of unlit candles!!!! Terrible terrible service - never have I experienced that. It was a good job we all had a sense of humour and laughed it off as an unbelievable event and that the food was good!

Family shopping outing in town didn’t fancy the regular fast food option. Went online and found Sonny’s Street Food. It was a bit of the beating track. When you walk in there is a small cafe like interior. It has an extensive menu with all the Thai favorites. Fast service, all the family enjoyed it!

I'd been trying to get my other half to Loughborough for months to visit Sonny's and while the food was great and as good as I remembered, the service was really slow. It was about 45 minutes from when we arrived to when our main meals were delivered. I'm not sure what happened and no-one explained either. We noticed as we left people who had arrived only 10 minutes before getting their meals.

A work colleague told me about Sonny's so I popped in today for lunch before a bit of Christmas shopping. Stunning food and very reasonably priced, I had change from a tenner for a main meal with rice and a drink and the spicing, wow! So many times in the UK the food is a bit bland but no chance of this here. Proper kick but with layers of flavour too, fantastic food. Definitely will be going again and taking friends with me.

Nicely finished inside and friendly staff. The curries are the best in my experience and the quorn is a really good option - cheaper than the meat options and tastes great! I also recommend the iced coffee.

Not visited as a diner, only used as takeaway and every time they have been very helpful with choices over the phone, what's turned up is always correct and tasty,even if a little slow on delivery.

I knew this restaurant when it was called 'Siam Bakery' and the transformation/makeover into 'Sonny's Street Food' was well needed! It mirrors the trend and interiors of noodle bars, such as 'Wagamama'; where you have wooden benches, or tables and chairs, the food being served in a more relaxed and casual manner. I have always loved the cuisine; finding it freshly prepared/cooked, authentically Thai and very tasty. I have visited on numerous occasions, taking family and friends and enjoy the vibe inside; where this eatery tends to be popular with the local student population and especially South East Asian. I can recommend the cake making service too, as I had the most incredible chocolate cake for my daughter's birthday!

We tried this restaurant for the first time last week and although the food was good it wasn't outstanding. We started with fish cakes and prawn cakes but both seemed a bit greasy. This was followed by a prawn Thai curry which my husband said was good but to me it looked as if it needed more prawns. My Pad Thai was larger and I enjoyed it alot. Service was ok but not too friendly. I would try here again but would probably try different starters. Nice to see a few Thai students in which makes me think it probably is quite authentic food.

Four of us visited the restaurant/cafe just after five o'clock for dinner. Nice wooden tables and chairs give the place a street food feel and for that it gets full marks.

Loughborough isn't short on good Thai food but this place is epic.

I really the Pad Thai, Khao Nar Ped and Pad Krapow here. They taste very good and portion size are quite generous for Pad Thai. They costs about £6-7 each which is very good compared to other Thai restaurants around the area.

Small restaurant with decent setting & comfortable sitting. We ordered the beef noodle, duck noodle, fried noodle. They were quite delicious. The restaurant has the small area with sofa for the customer to sit, relax or reading etc.

You can easily walk past this place but give it a go- the menu is simple, but has some really tasty Thai dishes. The Thai green curry and sticky rice is delicious- also the ice teas are very refreshing and served in cute little mason jars. We recently visited Thailand and the curry at Sonny's brings make memories so it certainly feels authentic. No nonsense place with really good quality Thai food.

We live in Loughborough and have walked past the café several times but for some reason never got round to going in and trying out the food. All I can say is more fool us as the food is amazing! We had veggie spring rolls to start which were lovely but it was the mains that blew us away. We shared a Papaya salad and a rice dish with quorn (my husband is vegetarian). The flavours were gorgeous, especially in the salad - absolutely stunning! They cook everything fresh so it can take a little while to come to your table but most definitely worth it! We will be going back very soon I'm sure and may even become a regular there. The menu is extensive so lots of choice available to us meaning it will be a while before we get bored!

We visited on Bank Holiday Monday, wasn't busy and received good customer service. Really enjoyed the main courses. we had a few starters, fish cakes and chicken satay which I found a bit on the chewy side. But would defiantly go back for the mains.

Regularly been getting food from Sonny's for nearly 2 years now and still the quality of food is great. However, the last several times I've ordered for food to be delivered it has taken well over an hour to arrive. I don't know if this is to do with Sonny's or "justeat". (I place the order directly with Sonny's) Regardless it needs improving, with Deliveroo now up and running in Loughborough, Sonny's should collabs with them, as they provide a much better service.

This place is definitely not to be overlooked. WOW! I know my foods in Thai and I was blown away with the how good sonnys were. Best Thai place I've tried in UK and very authentic! It's hard to find such places but staff were very helpful with my dietary requirements and Sonnys delivered exceptionally. Ordered a takeaway for a sukiyaki chicken soup and yom woon Sen in clear noodle salad with seafood! Packed full of flavours very clean and healthy. Nice cosy little restaurant with friendly staff. Highly recommend this place if you like Thai!

Very nice place, clean and bright. Good for lunch, dinner, but the dessert range is small. Best for hot or cold Thai tea with condensed milk and Thai food dishes are lovely. Tried some starters, recommend if you like Thai curry or a classic Pad Thai, or prawn cakes with Tangerine sauce.

My partner and I go to Sonny's regularly, and occasionally order from them and it always tastes impeccable.

My son took me the first time as he had been recommended it as authentic street food and I was very impressed by the flavours of the food. I had King prawn Tom Yum soup for starters - very tasty with just the right amount of heat, followed by chicken Gang Dang (Red Thai curry) with rice. Excellent taste! Prices are very reasonable. I've been twice more since then with my vegetarian wife who also loved the food and I recommend this restaurant 100 percent.

Excellent food for a very reasonable price! Don't expect a 5 star surrounding or service (the clue is in the title), but this is authentic street food in a pleasant relaxed little restaurant, with good service and helpful staff.

I came here with my fiancé and had some of the best Thai food in all of the East Midlands. The waiter was very warming and friendly, the service was super quick and the food was just divine, all made by Thai chefs. You can tell this a very well run family restaurant with great prices, it is probably overshadowed by Thai Grand just down the road but having been to both I know Sonny's has my custom for as long as their open.

We visited Sonnys for lunch today having travelled from Wales to visit our son.. 5 of us in the group and we all adored the food. my daughter is vegetarian and raved about the choice available. Don't be mislead by the cafe style appearance..this is a lovely place to eat amazing Thai food. The service was great too- very friendly and attentive. Planning our next visit already.

Doesnt look amazing from the outside and have walked past a few times thinking it was a cafe. But went in last Sunday and its basic but nicely decorated. What I loved was the family atmosphere, kids doing their homework followed by eating. Took me back to The lovelyThai culture and people from our holiday years ago! The food was freshly made, good home food. I had pad Thai noodles with chicken and my husband had his favourite som tam salad followed by green Thai curry with heat shaped rice! Very reasonably priced and was nice to see lots of customers arriving. We will visit again!

We have just come back from having the most amazing meal at Sonnys, a family run business who are all so friendly. After living s S travelling in Thailand (plus visiting today with our Thai friend) it's as authentic as you can get. Great menu, I was spoiled for choice so had a starter a man plus a salad to share, you come away feeling full but not an uncomfortable full plus you can take you own booze. Great prices too, fully recommend for amazing Thai food.

Great food and quick service, lovely little place, helpful staff. Now one of my regular places to eat. Also enjoy the Thai ice tea and iced green tea, weekly!!
