Sky Chinese Cuisine in Newcastle upon Tyne

Food is always good at this restaurant. Service is the only let down. Very hard to flag down anyone as most of them are chonese students who are more interested in chatting among themselves.

I was surprised to see the variety in the reviews for Sky. We visited on an early evening before going to a gig on a walk in, not realising that Newcastle were also playing at home that night. So, for a Tuesday, it was busier than we’d expected, but we were still able to get a table for two on a walk in basis. It was immediately reassuring to note that the restaurant was used regularly by some football fans as part of their pre-match routine, and also that about half the people dining were Chinese. Stowell Street has a range of restaurants and there are some that don’t seem ever to be used by the Chinese community themselves. Anyway, even though it was busy, our meals came quite quickly. I had a Szechuan Pork and my wife had pork, spring onion and ginger, both with fried rice. Portion sizes were good and the meals could not be faulted. All in all, given the quality of the food and the price, we left feeling we’d received very good value for money. Service was efficient and polite.

The food was mediocre at best.2 of the male staff were fondling each others buttocks right beside our table. The waitress dropped our pancakes and left us sitting with our duck going cold, as it was on cold plates while she replaced them. No hotplate to keep food warm, waiter threw our starters on the table and another waitress came up and sorted it. The soda water and blackcurrant was tasteless. There were wires coming out of the aircon units. The place is in dire need of a face-lift! I would not recommend anyone go here. Wait til you get home and order from your favourite takeaway.

Cheap, delicious, central and somewhere different! I see a lot of comments on here claiming the staff behaviour is a bit cold. Just because they don't have a fake smile plastered on their face 24/7 doesn't mean it's somewhere to avoid. They are there to work, provide a fast speedy service to serve piping hot food which I have received every time. I have always felt a homely vibe from this location as I have been going since I was a kid!

If you aren’t a fan of stairs then take the lift. It’s quite a big dining hall. Lots of Chinese people which is a good sign. The dim sum was nice. I liked the pork and prawn dumplings and the beef bao. We came at about 6 and they had already run out of some items we wanted to try. They stop selling cheung fun at 5. The honey chilli chicken and singapore noodles had the same problem as there wasn’t enough spice. The meat in the singapore noodles was sooooo tasty. I wouldn’t order the honey chilli. The deep fried vietnamese spring rolls had an awful taste and texture. Felt like they got stuck in your teeth. When we walked out we noticed everyone seemed to be ordering a dark noodle soup/broth which looked very tasty.

Food was very average for an area excelling in Chinese cuisine. The staff unfortunately didn't even warrant an 'average' as they were slow, forgetful and basically looked like they couldn't be bothered. When they brought out the wrong food they tried to talk us into having it as it had been already made. The same happened with the drinks order and there was no convincing them that it wasn't what we ordered and all we got was ''well I'll leave it and see if you like it''!! In a nutshell, we won't be hurrying back.

Gets packed every time we're in there which must mean other people rate it highly too. Can't fault anything .

Booked table for 21 people (2 x tables) celebrating mams 80th birthday meal. Eventhough the restaurant was busy the service was superb, food came out very quick fresh and piping hot. Service from restaurant excellent. Thank-you very much. Jacqueline Munroe

Very nice service and great food to eat

Booked for 5pm as pre theatre meal for 4 Took drinks order, 1 drink not available so had to change. Given 3 menus, all very confusing, would have been easier to give us the sheet as displayed outside or on the website. We chose 3 starters again 1 , the buttefly prawns not available and 4 mains and not available the sweet potato fries! Starters nice, tasty and plenty of them. Chicken and beef strips and spring rolls. They started to clear the dishes away before we were all finished.. They didn't come back again until the mains arrived, so we're having to move the dirty plates around to get them put down. Plates were not hot and the meat wasn't particularly hot altho the sauces were as were the chips and rice. So the meals were cold quite quickly. Noone came back to ask if everything was OK ir if we wanted anything else. We sat finished for quite awhile then we asked for the bill then they came quickly and cleared the table. Disappointing 😞 and won't return. £77 for 4 soft drinks 3 starters and 4 mains with sides. So not badly priced.

Best & the most authentic Chinese restaurant in Newcastle. The portion's huge and the food's just amazing! Staff is lovely too. Some workers were here as customers which is a good sign. We got mapo tofu rice and beef flank rice and felt really full. Would happily visit here with my family next time.

Complete variety of dim sum, fried taro wedges are very crunchy, rice rolls are smooth, authentic Hong Kong style BBQ, recommended dry fried beef river, golden prawns, staff service is attentive, friendly and polite

Excellent as usual. All our dishes were well cooked and flavourful. Staff were efficient and friendly. My two grandchildren, often a little picky, loved the food. We look forward to our next visit.

Only been once. Asked Chinese outside they said it was best in street I totally agree it was so tasty best meal ever thank you & staff wonderful

As of 2024, one of only very few decent Chinese (Cantonese) restaurants left in Newcastle (e.g. Happiness Inn before COVID) . Sky isn't exceptional but, with almost no other choices, serves it's purpose well

I've been here twice now, and both times have had very good service! I did have very quiet times both times I went but the service was friendly and let us stay early when they hadn't opened for service yet and have some tea before we could order food. The three meats platter was a good portion and the crispy pork belly was delicious. I also love the XO turnip cakes and their selection of dim sum is decent though not complete. Getting into the place is a bit odd but the restaurant itself is great!

Very tasty food and very quick service. Probs needs a refurb, but that's not a biggy. Very busy at Sunday lunch, but that's typically a good sign. Note there's lots of stairs but there is a lift. We'll definitely be back.

Went tonight for food, it being the work Xmas night out. Food was ok freshly microwaved but the service was diabolical. Seated just after 6pm by quarter to 7 hadn't been asked for drink or food order. Had to put an arm up to catch someone's attention. Had to ask for more plates after the starter as the duck had came and they didn't bring plates. Same with the mains. We swiped some plates off the table next to us. Not once did anyone come to the table to ask if we needed anything, again arm in the air for drinks. The place is rotten manky dirty. Toilets are disgusting. Overflowing sanitary bins and the muck behind the toilet😱 £465 later, would I go back? Definitely not!

The dining environment is superb, the facade is particularly innovative and instantly recognizable, and I love the restaurant's Japanese tofu, which has an unforgettable smooth texture!

3rd Visit to Sky Chinese Cuisine - and last. Waited a little to be greeted and shown to table - as would expect. Took time looking at Dim Sum menu and wondered if regular menu was available. Observed those arriving after us being given a regular menu on their table. Tried to catch attention of waiting staff every time they passed - serving others, picking up finished dishes, and taking orders of others. Felt like we were covered by an invisibility cloak - as gazes went over / around and no eye contact was made and never had an opportunity to raise a hand to indicate we were ready as was not looked at. After observing the second table of folk to arrive after us having their order taken, and sitting for at least 30 minutes, we decided to leave ........... and leave we did - totally unnoticed or acknowledged. On our first visit here we waited 45 minutes to be served and another 45 minutes for food - the food was fabulous - hence why we returned a second (slow service but quicker than previous) and third time, putting our experience down to a busy day / short staffing ......... Seems that there is another reason for the time it takes us to get served here, and it appears that this won't be everyone's experience. We enjoy the food here - but won't be back as not looking for a long leisurely meal over a number of hours at 1pm on a Saturday. There were 6 of us and like a lot of tables had the mixed age range of a family group.

Absolutely terrible service,we were shown to our table on arrival but then once sat down we were totally invisible to staff and waited a good half an hour if not longer still unattended to so left the premises via the mancky stairs and the minging sticky carpet! This isn’t the first time we’ve had this happen to us there but the first time it happened we did eventually have a member of staff come and serve us 40 minutes after arrival and then just as long after that we got our food which sadly was really good which is why we gave them the benefit of the doubt and tried them out again, but I’m afraid to say it won’t be happening again, there’s way more better places to eat in Newcastle than this one with staff that actually would like to make you feel welcome and to provide you with a better service than Sky Chinese Cuisine do

I started going to Sky just after it open and rated it to be the best Chinese restaurant in Newcastle. After the lockdowns, the owners sold up and it rapidly became the worst restaurant on Stowell St. I decided to give it a go after reading some positive reviews. The dim sum was as good as under the old regime. Having had my confidence restored, I plan to go back for a more substantial meal. To the non Chinese eye the restaurant itself looks scruffy and in need of refurbishment. However in my experience places like that always tend to sell the more authentic food.

We visited for lunch, initially to go somewhere else, they were closed…… thankfully. I had chicken/sweetcorn soup and sweet and sour chicken (best I’ve ever tasted) was just delicious….. hubby had little chop suey rolls and beef in black bean sauce … 10/10

I have been to 4-5 restaurants in this street, but sky is my favourite and the staff are brilliant, food is beautiful especially Robert he made us feel very welcome. Can't wait to go next week for the lobster dish it looked amazing. UPDATE we returned on the 27th of August and it was a totally different experience. It was a total shambles we were sat down the staff took our drinks order. We ordered dim sum. The items came 10 minutes apart we had no plates or cuterly we had to ask for them. Then our starters came then literally our mains came while we were still eating our starters, 2 of the mains we got came sweet even tho we asked the staff if they were sweet or spicy because I can't eat sweet stuff we had to ask for plates and cuterly again But had to make do with what we got. It's a shame because the week before it was the best ever. To be fair they seemed short staffed..

Exceptional food, really tasty. The staff were fab too. The dim sum (which we didn't have but tables around us did) looked amazing so we took an order form, which is how you order it, and will do some research on what we may order next time.

THE BEST CHINESE RESTAURANT IN NEWCASTLE! If you’re looking for a Chinese restaurant with authentic flavours, then look no further. The Dim sum is second to non and the ho fun beef noodles is my fav! I couldn’t recommend this place more. When looking at some of the 1 star ratings for this restaurant on Tripadvisor it makes me laugh. If you’re wanting hot and sour soup or sweet and sour chicken balls to arrive at a super quick pace then maybe try an all you can eat buffet. Although, this restaurant will serve those dishes, it is the authentic ones that really blow your mind. Once again, great food and service has always been very good every time I’ve been.

A beautiful authentic Chinese experience, with excellent customer service and quality food. As a real foodie I really regard high quality ingredients and taste. This experience was wonderful and it will definitely be our go to!! It was also fantastic to see Robert, the manager there eating! Robert was very friendly and lovely!

Three course lunch menu is a steal! Wee hidden gem in Newcastle highly recommended, especially the ribs!

Great food staff were OK not chatty but if asked anything they will answer I couldn't falter the menu I couldn't use chopsticks so they gave me a fork I visited valentines day but it was for a family funeral

After perusing the menu for some time (staff seemed to ignore us for a longish time) we eventually ignored the set menu and plumped for a mix of dim sum Only the ribs in a very meek ie.flavorless sauce was not enjoyed I think this was because the ribs were mainly fat and bone I knawed.away at them because I was hungry ,my effort was not really rewarded . My favorite dim sum was the dumplings.with pork and chives....the chives really improve any of the dumplings another nice one had a boiled quails egg in it my partner.and I both enjoyed them despite the waiting time I did not like the tea I was.served I had asked for chrysanthemum tea what I got looked like camomile but tasted bitter mystery tea. Service.when it eventually came was fine The restaurant itself has seen better days and reminded me of the earliest Chinese restaurants that were a feature of every town back in the sixties ,I did enjoy the views on the second story restaurant so if you have problems with your legs take the lift you will see at the bottom floor outside ,button right at lift door you need to know this as there is several buttons

📍Sky Chinese Cuisine, Chinatown @ Newcastle Upon Tyne Literally up in the 'sky', the entrance to this restaurant is through a lift, directly at the front door. Go up a storey, and you are welcomed by the aroma of freshly steamed 'Dim Sum' in a beautifully decorated location. I was surprised that despite it being a Monday afternoon, the restaurant was packed. It's a testament of how good the food is. I came to know of this spot thanks to the invitation of Freda, a fellow doctor colleague back in Malaysia. All the way from Middlesbrough, she spent a day in Newcastle JUST for Chinatown's amazing cuisines. The food was truly delicious. -Hor Fun with beef which was richly marinated, with tangy thick rice noodles. -Roasted Duck Rice. The duck was succulent and juicy, perfectly roasted, and complementing the fragrant oiled rice. -Dim Sum - beef with chilli, not too spicy -Chrysanthemum tea, freshly brewed in a teapot, with rock sugar at the side Mr Robert, the owner, attended to us and was most friendly. This spot is a lovely place for great Chinese food.

The portion was quite large and the dim sum price is not too overpriced. The dining experience was nice and I enjoyed eating here. Would definitely be here next time. I was surprised there wasn't a lot of people even at 7 pm.

Un amigo y yo fuimos aquí para un almuerzo "barato y alegre" antes de un empate de la Copa FA en SJP. No nos lo ofrecieron, así que tuvimos que pedir el menú "Almuerzo especial". Habiendo dicho eso, pensamos que era un buen valor para 9 (para dos cursos), selecciones razonables de entrantes y platos principales. Tuve gambas y albóndigas de cerdo (3) seguido de carne de res con pimientos en salsa de frijoles negros. Una botella del vino tinto más barato, un francés muy aceptable, no vintage, tenía 16 años, lo que hace que nuestra factura total, antes de la propina, sea 34. El servicio fue eficiente, así que estábamos dentro / fuera en una hora. El partido de fútbol que siguió fue menos satisfactorio.

Came for lunch today to see out 2019 with the family. Had a mixture of dim sum and noodle and rice dishes. All came out quickly and was piping hot. Food was ok. Some of the portions were small like the char Sui buns - however the prices are a bit higher than some Other restaurants in the area. Staff were very niceAnd attentive. The decor is looking a bit shabby. All in all it’s ok.

Yo, la esposa y otra pareja, llamamos un domingo por la noche, orden de la opción de banquete, sopa de pollo y maíz dulce, pato (panqueques) y luego una comida principal, la sopa estaba bien, el pato estaba bien, comida principal (pollo en negro frijoles, carne de cerdo crujiente, carne de cerdo de Szechuan, carne de res Saigón) todos los platos eran dulces, sosos o simplemente "ok", no se rompieron bolas del parque, y entre las 4, la cuenta fue de más de 80 libras con algunas bebidas, no se apresurará atrás tbh.

El restaurante está en el tercer piso, por lo que la entrada es a través de un ascensor situado en la acera. El restaurante está bien pero le falta un poco de carácter. Sin embargo, la comida es buena y el servicio fue rápido y servicial. Hay muchos restaurantes para elegir en este camino, muchos llenos de comensales chinos, pero el menú fijo en el Sky tiene una buena relación.

Food here is fantastic, Dumplings being the highlight. Also the two roast rice with pork Belly and Duck is a must.

Normally good, seemed below par this time. Food was acceptable but not as good as usual and service was perfunctory compared with the warm welcome and personal servicew on previous occasions.

Took a friend here yesterday as the dim sum is lovely. Was just before 5pm and it was not busy at all. Got seated straight away then waited.....and waited.....and waited some more...… sat there for 20 minutes in the far corner whilst the waitresses gossiped with other tables and took orders from a couple of tables that came in way after we did,

We popped in on Bank Holiday for a late lunch - 3.30pm. We opted for two starters and two mains and two drinks. Where do I start?!!!!! Total bill was £47!!! We were asked 5 times if we were ready to order! The bowls were chipped. Neither the two starters nor the mains were served at the same time! The prawn toasts were the thinnest we have ever had, and insipid and chewy - horrible. The king prawn main course was absolutely tasteless. Overpriced, poor quality food with poor service. You have been warned!

Me topé con este lugar, un poco para llegar al restaurante - ¡3 tramos de escaleras! Bien vale la pena la subida. Una gran selección de comida - fideos y arroz de verduras eran excepcionales! ¡Soy un vegetariano y me cuidaron a diferencia de otros chinos que he estado! Definitivamente lo recomiendo

In September 2018, we were entertaining 7 friends and decided to go for a 10-course banquet set menu. We subsequently paid £180 for this meal.

This restaurant always has loads of Chinese people eating there, and their food always looks way better than what I order, the issue is they have 2 menus, one in English and on in Cantonese, the English one is the bog standard we are used to, but the other one has leads of other dishes that look so good, but as the menu does not have pictures I can not order from it

Visité aquí con un grupo de amigos, ordené un banquete que estaba bien, aparte de las costillas de repuesto que debían haber estado cocinando todo el día, ya que eran tan difíciles.

This restaurant has no ambience and is very basic but the food is as good as any we have had in Stowell street and much better than some at a much lower cost. If you want no frills good food this is a good option.

Really enjoy the food there. I go with a group of friend ever 6 weeks or so.

The entrance to this restaurant is strange, not sign posted correctly, but once you navigate upstairs and get seated, then its all good from then. Dim sum at its best, all freshly made and good quality, very authentic in taste, works on tick sheet but staff are helpful if you don't read chinese. Best chinese food I had in newcastle hands down. worth a visit or two, not badly priced too and has a good selection of lagers/beers. Thumbs up

The food here is nothing special. Really lacks flavour. The drinks were a rip off £4.50 for a soft drink! The staff we quite rude The place is grotty and in places filthy. Poor

This is my third visit to the Sky Chinese and every time has been better than the last. This is now the first thing that goes on the list whenever we plan a trip to Newcastle.

My son loves dim sum and I was visiting Newcastle and this place you must put on your visit list.

Came here for the second time, food was very quickly served, tasty just a little salty for my taste but otherwise great.

First visit there today for lunch. Very impressed with food and very friendly staff. Nice to see them in a smart uniform too. Will definitely return.

Almorcé aquí 4 veces en mi visita de 5 días a Newcastle; No sé cómo se compara con otros restaurantes chinos en la ciudad, pero la comida me pareció muy sabrosa y de buena calidad. Tienen un menú de almuerzo especial para 9 en días laborables, usted elige un plato principal y un plato principal con arroz de una lista especial de almuerzo. Disfruté todas las comidas que probé, y agregué helado por 1 para que la factura fuera de 10, ya que este es su mínimo para tarjetas de crédito.

En una reciente visita a Newcastle, estamos en este restaurante, este fue excelente, fue de un alto nivel, el personal era encantador. No puedo creer la buena relación calidad-precio que mi esposa y yo comimos en Sky. Pagamos 26 por un almuerzo de 3 corse por dos, que incluía una cerveza cada uno. Comencé con albóndigas de cerdo y gambas a mi esposa con rollitos de primavera. Ambos estaban deliciosos, mis bolas de masa hervida se fundieron en tu boca.

We took advantage of a £9 three course lunch offer. The restaurant is on the 2nd floor of a nondescript building in 'Chinatown', accessible by a lift. The greeting was friendly and the restaurant was encouragingly busy. We ordered chicken & sweetcorn soup, sweet and sour pork and satay pork, the main meals served with plenty of egg fried rice. Large soft drinks were £4+, so we settled for a couple of bottles of cider at £2.80.

£4.30 for a class of coke. Nearly fell of my chair! £17 for 4 cokes. And cheap tasting at that. Chicken satay was bland and tasteless. I'm not from China but think even I could make something more authentic in my kitchen.

Another visit to our fav! The experience begins on the pavement as you await the lift right on the street I have only ever seen that before in Hong Kong but its right here in Newcastle. Open all day this very popular 1st floor restaurant has a bustling busy atmosphere frequented mainly by the local Chinese community, a good sign that the food is authentic and delicious! and it is it lives up to the hype, this is our go to place whenever we are in town. Whether you eat from their cheap lunch menu, try the dumplings to start, go for the huge range of Dim Sum (too many to mention) or dive into their extensive main menu you will not be disappointed. I love their 3 roast meats combo and the Hot and Sour soup is really delicious. There is something for everybody here, from the basic to the truly adventurous all served by the busy friendly staff!

Really pleased with the authentic Chinese meal experience at Sky Chinese Cuisine, my first visit to this restaurant situated in Newcastle’s China Town.

My friend and I came here during our city break. The staff were fast and efficient and really helpful telling me about the dishes that were gluten free and even did a sweet and sour with plain rather than battered chicken for me.

As I was in Stowell Street, I decided to opt for a Chinese meal. I don’t like the buffet type of restaurants, as I find them noisy. As in a lot of reviews people say don’t be put off by the stairs. I used the lift to the second floor, and upon arriving I was amazed at the size of the restaurant. I was greeted and shown a table. I had a look at the drinks menu opted for a draught lager to be told none was available. I chose my meal off the extensive menu and it was brought accordingly. The food was hot and tasty.

We visit regularly and can say it is by far the best dim sum restaurant in the North East. The stairs leading up to the restaurant itself is a bit shabby and could do with a deep clean but the restaurant itself is clean and spacious and light. There is also a lift for easy access. Food is freshly cooked and cooked well, portions are generous and prices fair.

Take the lift to this high rise restaurant, we did not but will the next time.
