Had my usual dim sum and char siu here. Great restaurant.

Really fabulous food. Restaurant itself is no frills and simple but the food is to die for and the portions really are enormous - we could have ordered half the amount, it really is great value, but it was so good we ended up boxing the leftover food up to finish at home. My little boy says it’s the best Chinese food he’s ever eaten. I agree

Fabulous restaurant with friendly staff. Huge portions and freshly cooked. My partner had chicken chow mein and couldn't finish the portion, it was enormous. The entrance is uninspiring due to scaffolding covering the building but don't let that put you off visiting this restaurant. It's great.

Excellent authentic Chinese Cuisine. Excellent Staff.. Speaks volumes when you see home many Chinese eat at this restaurant. I highly recommend you visit this restaurant

The food is decent portion, nice and clean. Quality of the food are the best i guess but the service was the worst, waiter was quite rude and very ignorance.

Day after CNY food was poor today. I fancied crispy roast pork and duck with rice. I had the dish here before and it was great, but today the pork was not fresh, felt tough and the skin was not crispy at all ! And after looking at an older photo, I can see the portion is smaller and no veg. So I was really disappointed and annoyed.

Booked for 7:30, waited until 8:52 and they haven’t deliver any food at all. When we complained to them, they were mad and said “oh because you didn’t say you are ready to eat” HELLO???? You think we’ll sit for 1.5 hours to chat? What a terrible excuse, they simply just haven’t prepare anything and their service is extremely terrible. Very rude. You definitely have better options.

Waited at the table for an hour and a half and nothing came, asked twice when is our dishes coming, the first time they said they haven’t start cooking because we didn’t ask them to start, the second time they said another ten minutes but nothing came at all

One of my favorite restaurants, I never had any reason to complain, in my opinion not one Chinese diner beats the food of this place, the decor needs a serious update! But that is something that is not of any great importance to me, as long the food is good I am happy!

All four dishes were great, especially the spicy chicken. Update two years later: Now it seems that compared to other restaurants in Newcastle, the food is not very outstanding. But the service is disappointing. Several times the experience was unpleasant. In the end, he justifiably refused to provide a receipt. Cards from outside the UK cannot be used.

Amazing food and large choice of dishes

Ok if your Chinese but we were made to wait for a table right next to kitchen whilst other 2 people parties were given hood tables for four seats - won’t be back after coming for years

Seriously good food, we ordered chicken in oyster sauce with fruit syrup which I would recommend. Food came really quickly after ordering!

Food was good, and the portion sizes where massive too much for us to eat sadly but when asked for the dim sum menu, we were informed they are no longer doing dim sum so I think this needs to be removed, from their website as it was the reason we wanted to eat there.

My friend took me here, loved the fish, the chicken was a tiny bit too sweet. Otherwise, very nice.

Old fashioned Chinese restaurant

Food is ok, but the service is not decent. They split hot tea to my girlfriend’s coat without any apologies. More importantly, they did not accept non-UK credit card, not quite sure why, this is the only place reject my card, they even did not let me try with the machine. Very rude indeed.

This experience was a good one. We had masses of food cooked fresh and in a traditional manner. As in the staff don't speak much English which was difficult for us. The portions are good sizes and variety vast. It's not a plush palace more an asian cafe than restaurant, but good quality. Parking across the road isn't cheap but it's easily accessible by all modes of public transport in the area.

Very poor customer service. Made me never want to visit again although the food taste good. Hope the owner reads it and gives some lectures to staff how to value customers. The young staffs are not bad. But the middle age ones treat customers very badly.

My wife came home very upset after being told to take our crying 4 month old baby outside (in November!). This is disgusting treatment of a customer, it goes without saying we won't return and would suggest anybody with young children avoid this toxic place.

There isn’t an option to leave a review without any stars. If I could I will not give them any stars. I went to have lunch with a friend and my 4 months old baby yesterday around 2 pm. There were only three tables in the restaurant including us. My 4 MONTHS OLD old baby was a bit unsettle and my friend was trying to help settling her down walking around near the entrance of the restaurant area and a waitress (who seems to be in charge) told her to walk outside a bit because my baby was crying ! I can’t believe what I saw and heard. It was cold in the restaurant and she even ask my friend to take my baby a bit outside the restaurant area which is freezing cold and for a baby. We left the restaurant immediately. She can’t even tolerate a 4 months old baby. It was an awful experience and will never go back. Please think twice if you have a baby don’t visit as they are not very family friendly. Just very disappointed.

Stumbled across this place on a hungover Sunday afternoon. I’m not local so I didn’t know where to eat. But my god was it a good choice. Hands down the best Chinese I’ve ever eaten. Once I walked in and was offered a Chinese or English menu and the place full of Asian families enjoying Sunday dinner i knew I was onto a winner. Super clean open kitchen too. We stuffed ourselves and didn’t feel overly full or thirsty like you do after a Chinese. All the meat was fall off the bone tender and fresh. Duck was amazing.

Mid 2023: Dim Sum just like, maybe, better than Hong Kong’s restaurants. Every dish is heat and delicious. The big boss is always looking to help in the restaurant. He giving sweets to my daughter every time after I paid the bill. Late 2023: As the cook was gone to another restaurant to work, the food quality changed to lower. The boss has gone also. Most of the staff gone.

I wanted to like this place But sadly, there is too much that goes against it to outweigh the positives It’s not a large place, yet the decor is dated and tired Floor was dirty Seats had food on there, from when, who knows The tables were table - food clearly visible underneath the glass lazy susan turntable Crockery was dirty Staff looked exhausted, like they had been working a seven day back to back shift Felt like they didn’t want to be there Pricing was on the high side for what was on offer £10+ for a plate of broccoli? You may as well have held a gun to my head and demanded my iPhone and wallet too However……here’s the shame The food on the whole was good If they could put a little bit more effort into the hygiene of the establishment, it would be half decent Sadly for them, there are far more better options in the city that they are competing against

Food was very good,but check your bill as we were overcharged on wine,some staff had masks & gloves while serving & taking order,fire alarm went off for quite some time.

Went in and got seated service was a little slow mind you it was busy, whats the old saying if the chinese are eating there it must be good Well it it was good half our party didnt bother with the lunchtime menu and used the main menu, we were not disappointed meal. As I say the service was a bit slow butthere were only 4 tables empty

We have used this restaurant for many years but will never be back. My husband and I went there on Sunday evening to celebrate the special occasion of my 60th birthday. The minute we walked in the door we could tell something was different. Different staff, different lay out of tables, carpets had been replaced by tiling which made the feel of the place more of a cafe than a restaurant. We asked for the Dim Sum menu when we were being taken to our table and were told "No Dim Sum". no explanation. When we were seated, they assumed, wrongly that we would not want to use chopsticks and removed them from the table and replaced them with a knife and fork. We decided to ignore that because in the past the food has always been excellant. How wrong we were. We ordered a set meal for 2 people priced at £38.99 each as it was a special occasion. The soup was supposed to be Crabmeat and sweetcorn, we were served chicken and sweetcorn, no explanation. The next course was appertizers (crispy wantons etc) which would normally be served with something like sweet chilli sauce. We were served bottled salad cream! We queried this and got nothin more than a shrug of the shoulders by the waiter. The next course with crispy aromatic duck with pancakes, which in the past has been carved at your table. This was brought out on a plate, obviously straight from the microwave, with only 6 pancakes between us to eat with it. In the past we used to received 8 or 10 pancakes. There was duck left over and no pancakes to have with them. The main was a sea food dish in ginger and spring onion, which was supposed to have scallops in but they was probably 2 very small scallops included, sliced very thinly so they were hardly noticable. Their was not a hint of ginger in the dish and all in all was bland. The other dish was fillet steak in cantonese cause which was okay, but nowhere near the portion size as in the past. We asked to see the manager and was told the manager was on holiday, come back tomorrow. Obviously this restaurant has changed ownership and staff and increased its prices quite steeply, but the quality of the service and more importantly the food has taken a nose dive. It was a very unpleasant and disappointing experience and after almost 20 years of frequenting this restaurant we will never go back and would recommend it be avoided.

Nice meal. Special lunch menu a good buy. 3 courses for £11 or so. Been many times in the past.

The waiter was extremely rude. Only give out the free prawn crackers to non asian/ chinese presenting people. One of the worse dining experiences in newcastle.

Do not expect to get luxery surroundings, but what you miss in decor will ample be made up in quality of flavour and food. Originality from the first mouthfull till the last. Homemade Dim-Sum not frozen rubbish! Ask for Wor-Tip, fantastic dumplings!!

Great food in the heart of Town. A definite recommendation!!

Visited on a Sunday afternoon with my son after reading a review on a foodie Facebook page and we love dim sum. We were greeted by the friendly staff and ordered steamed king prawn dumplings, pork buns, spring rolls and some king prawn noodles. Absolutely delicious. We will be back

A friend from Hong Kong decided to bring me to his FAVOURITE restaurant. According to him, some of the 'Dim Sum' dishes here were better than the ones served in Hong Kong. 1.Cheong Fun wrapped around Fried Crispy dough - This was the winning dish for me. The cheong fun is made there and then by the chefs, and cheong fun dishes are only available till 4pm. -a bowl of soya sauce is provided. Just pour it over the cheong fun, and relish the soft exterior with the crunchy interior. 2.Salted Egg Bun -The defining test of this dish is the melting yellow salted egg that oozes out after a bite. Here, that's exactly what happened. 3.Beef Hor Fun. This was a most satisfying meal. I'm certain that I'll come back for more soon.

Well my first time here. The waiter was brilliant. Loads of fun. The food was really nice. The door fired dumplings are incredible. Everything about my whole visit was incredible.

We popped in at lunchtime today to satisfy our craving for dim-sum and we were not disappointed! Wow! Delicious, freshly made dim-sum which tasted absolutely incredible. The service and recommendations from David were great, all staff made us feel extremely welcome even though the restaurant was busy. We'll certainly be back! Thank you. 5 Stars from us.

Popped in here for take away, hadn’t been for a few years but it used to be quite good. Service shambolic, staff arguing among themselves over an irate customer on the phone so waited a long time for order to be taken. Placed order then told cash payment only, just as well I had some. Staff not particularly welcoming, and when bag of food arrived I asked for some chilli oil to accompany the dim sums. Not only is this always available in every decent Chinese restaurant I’ve ever been to, it’s always complimentary. So to be barked at by some staff member who looked like he was wearing half a wig to tell me “next time you will be charged, but free this time” didn’t go down well. I’ve just spent £40 on a take away and that’s the way you treat your customer?! Well guess what? There won’t be a next time.

Not a posh nosh. Nice authentic food. Clean. You can see the kitchen. Good service. Very reasonably priced.

We have been looking forward to going out for Sunday dim sum since lockdown began and were so happy when we heard Happiness Inn had re-opened. Delicious, fresh food, lovely, helpful staff, and felt really covid-safe and clean. We're already planning our next visit!

We hadn't been in this place for some years and decided to give it a go. Nice colourful restaurant and cheerful enough, but we thought the food was OK, nothing special, and it wasn't cheap. We got off to a bad start with the waitress....

In off the streets for a bit of the old Asian cuisine, virgins of happiness so unsure what pleasures we would encounter. Opted for a set menu for two and were fine to switch a meal to a more preferred option, service was good, beer...

In my opinion this place can not be beaten for Dim Sum, for starters it is all made on the premises, nothing is bought in its all made by expert chefs! As for the other dishes the are of the highest quality and most authentic...

We had the set meal whereupon we all ordered the dish of our preference from the set menu individually. Service was ok polite and the meal was tasty and was not too pricy on the whole a good experience

Very nice food, tasty and authentic. Me and my friend both enjoyed it. It has been one of my favourite traditional Chinese restaurant in Newcastle. The waiter brought lovely traditional soup, was so delicious and warmed us up in the cold weather.

We have had lunch here a few times. We had the special lunch menu. Overall, the lunch was good with 3 courses: soup, main and dessert. Staff were friendly. The restaurant's decorations are dated but pleasant enough. All food was served in good time, presented well, and piping hot. You can choose other food from the menu if you don't prefer the special lunch menu. This is a good restaurant in the city centre and offers value for money.

No habíamos estado en Happiness Inn por alrededor de 20 años, así que decidimos venir a almorzar. Cuando llegamos, las cosas parecían prometedoras, ya que había algunas familias chinas comiendo allí.

This is the best restaurant in the town centre. The food choice is amazing and so tasty, reasonable prices and authentic dishes. The Happiness Inn is always busy a sign of great food. If you are looking for the best Chinese food a visit is a must

We return here every once in a while because of its prime location, but on this occasion it was rather quiet for a Saturday evening. One notable mention is that the actual dish prices are more expensive than what is shown on the board outside! So we ended up being charged 20% more than expected after entering the premises.

Absolute rubbish never go to this restaurant rude staff tasteless food worst meal I’ve ever had

We ordered four dishes and they came quickly. The food tasted good but a little too salty for us. It was nice they offered hot water. The server only came back once to check whether everything tasted right, and then never came back. When we were done and approached the cashier to pay, they refused to take any card, but we knew they took credit card when it's over 30 pounds. Their attitude and actions were very unprofessional and rude toward us and we paid way over 30 pounds.

Food was hit and miss some was just warm so I questioned food temperature was told everything was fine, chicken dishes mostly tasted the same might try again in few months see if it's improved

Pasé por este lugar y miré el menú un montón de veces, pero nunca he estado hasta la Nochebuena de 2018. Parece que la parte y uno de los pocos restaurantes chinos abren todo el día todos los días, visitamos alrededor de las 4 pm y todavía estamos bastante ocupados. Se ofreció la opción de menú 'Tradicional' u 'Occidental', solo a la carta que se ofrece en ese momento, pero eso nos pareció perfecto (hay un menú especial para el almuerzo). Fuimos para el menú occidental. El servicio fue excelente y la comida de primera categoría, tal vez la mejor en el centro de Newcastle, ya que Stowell Street no es lo que era. Sopa de primera clase, aperitivos de sal, pimienta, costillas y avellanas eran perfectos y la carne sizzling era sabrosa y tierna. Porciones de tamaño decente y un gran valor.

Fui a almorzar a las 1300. El lugar estaba lleno de gente Chiinesa. Después de rechazar el menú del almuerzo, me dieron el chino que tiene platos que se encuentran en China.

We had dim sum lunch at this establishment. It was busy but the service was terrific and the food was second to none. Highly recommended to anyone who loves Chinese food visiting Newcastle. Also it's in the city centre!

Friends and I all food poisoned after dinning here

I am a regular in this place, if I could afford it I would be there at least once a week.

Had wonton soup. The broth was very tasty but initially I thought that all I had been given were four wonton skins. However when I had the first there was the tiniest taste of the wonton mixture. This was the case with all four of the wontons. Presumably they had run out of wonton mixture.

Had a great day in Town with friends returning for food once again.One of our very favourite places to eat in Newcastle..always attentive and friendly with excellent food and a quality menu choice.we opted for one of the banquets a good choice with ample amounts for us all..

We had a fabulous visit today. The food was delicious and the service was prompt and efficient. There are three different menus which take some time to navigate and understand but it was well worth it. Delicious, freshly cooked dishes. Highly recommended!

Mi esposa y yo acabamos de disfrutar de una comida en el Happiness Inn, Newcastle - upon - Tyne. Han pasado muchos años desde que visitamos este restaurante en particular y nos sorprendimos al leer las críticas muy negativas de "TripAdvisor" antes de la comida. El restaurante ha sido renovado y la comida tenía una excelente relación calidad-precio, el personal fue muy amable y educado. El gerente también fue muy atento y servicial. No hay problemas - volveremos, gracias.

Un gran grupo de nosotros asistimos como comida de despedida para un colega en una noche de lunes a viernes. Había unos 16 de nosotros divididos entre 2 mesas grandes. A pesar de esto, solo había un menú en inglés y un menú en chino por mesa. No hay menú en línea, por lo que nadie sabía lo que estaban pidiendo antes de llegar. No hace falta decir que los pedidos se seleccionaron desde el menú. El camarero de alto nivel no ocultó su impaciencia ya que cada uno elegía lo que estábamos teniendo. Las preguntas que hicimos mientras tomábamos nuestras decisiones parecían irritarlo cada vez más. El restaurante no estaba ocupado en este momento, así que no entiendo cuál fue el motivo de su disgusto.

Brilliant place for authentic Chinese food. All the local Chinese people come here. Excellent value. People here complained about how the Chinese waiting staff talk to each other and to the customers but Cantonese language does sound coarse to non speakers.

The server/waitress (long dark hair) was one of the most rude I’ve ever met.

Self service restaurant where you have to cook your own food (without good instruction by the waitress who did not explain it very well, we had a few raw vegtables cooked in a very watery soup (I use the word soup loosely) just a bowl of coloured water and charged £50 for the pleasure

I used to go quite frequently for the spicy fish meal and tendons. I do enjoy the food. However, I really dislike the manager there. she is always shouting and rude to her staff. If my order is not big, she seems unhappy. I think this shoutings and unhappy working experience would hurt these young people a lot. I worked in a restaurant before, but I never got shouted or asked to pay them back if I made mistakes. For the sake of those poor young people, I am not going back any more.

Great place for authentic Chinese cuisine

We used to visit the Happiness Inn regularly as it was excellent and the food always delicious but this is the first time i have been since the management was taken over...BIG MISTAKE! 8 of us walked in and shunted round a couple of tables before we sat down.

It's the place to go. Fab food set meals for English. If you are Chinese this is where to eat. It's been going from the 1970s

I felt that the dim sum was expensive (£4+) compared to London but then again they dont charge for tea or for service so it all balanced out. We only got a few basic items, which were authentic and tasty. Decor might need an update. Service is decent.

I've slowly been going around Newcastle trying different Chinese food restaurants and so far this is by far the most authentic. The Dim Sum is actually rather delicious, Char Siu Pao is tasty and their "Mixed meat" is also good, something to bare in mind though is part of it is their roast duck, which I found overly oily. The siu yuk was delicious, but the char siu, I found a tad dry. Their cheung fan (essentially the Chinese version of a ravioli) has way too much of the outer noodle on the prawn one, the char siu one was pretty good. Finally although the outer skin was hard, oddly crunchy at times, the shu mai was delicious. Finally, something more personal, the staff are pretty judgemental towards caucasians, not uncommon at Chinese restaurants, but as someone who is half Chinese, I don't take it well. Besides this I'm fairly impressed, and will be returning, especially for the Char Siu Pao.

Went to happiness for lunch yesterday with a friend and as usual food was spot on! I have been a few times since November and never written a review. Service is great and food is delicious and fresh - we had the £8.50 three course set meal and it was lovely. Can’t fault it and far better than any of the other local Chinese restaurants. Far from posh decor but don’t let that put you off as the food is great

didn't notice anything about no cash below 20 quid... but they didn't accept card when I spent £18... had to withdraw outside and went back to pay by cash...
