Lovely fish and chip shop in Southdown. Helpful and polite staff and a great range of food on the menu. Also great value for money.

Consistently good food although sometimes you are waiting longer than you'd want to. Josè the owner is always very friendly and will always say hello. The doner meat and chips is excellent! My only complaint would be their sausages are of the very cheap catering variety.. I personally wouldn't mind paying extra for a decent quality sausage.

Had an issue with an order, but Hose, very promptly fixed things for us. Fab customer service and even better food!

Best place to eat all food amazing

Ordered food but it didn’t arrive. Called them around 20 times and they didn’t answer or hung up. Rubbish service. Do not use.

Update: Went last night and the chips were sublime and I came away with everything I ordered. Upgrading my rating.

Awful unfriendly service and the system doesn’t work . They take your order , you pay and then wait . So you expect the queue of ordered to be processed in order - no chance - totally random and frustrating . Then the order is repeated cos they can’t trust/read the receipt . You cannot rely on the fact that you will get what you ordered. Quality is average - skin on all three fish and not very meaty . Chips soft , mushy peas are good . Not recommended particularly if they are busy.

Absolutely shocked after ordering tonight. I tried tonight and last night to order a delivery and on the checkout on their website it read sorry but no more orders can be taken. I rang them to double check and the woman told me it's OK there end, clearly not if it was telling me that on ordering. She took my order for delivery and said she'd send me a link to pay for it. I had to ring and ask where the link was being sent too. It had just then been sent by text so I paid for the order. The food arrived and they asked my husband at the door if it had been paid for, which I replied yes I've paid for it on the link sent. The food arrived and a curry roll was missing and the savaloys were hard and like rubber. I rang them to inform them and my god did she have an attitude! She wanted to argue with me after I complained about the savaloys being hard and like Rubber. she said I only ordered 2 vegetable ones. I listened back to the order and I clearly said 1 vegetable and 1 curry after she told me they don't just do curry ones and told me they're chicken and curry. So after ordering the 1 vegetable and one curry I said make it 2 vegetable ones too. I didn't say don't bother with the curry one but she took it upon herself to cancel the curry one and just stick the vegetables ones through. I replayed the order and it's exactly what I said. Then she told me she didn't charge me for delivery so that makes up for the savaloys. 1. It wasn't my fault you forgot to add delivery as you're the one who sent me the bill to pay and 2, why does that make it OK that the savaloys I ordered covered them not adding delivery! I won't ever order from here again until they get staff in that don't want to blame customers for their mistakes. Absolutely shocking service. You can only guess where I'd want to stick those Rubber savaloys after this 🤬

Atmosphere in a chippy is hard to star. But the food is good the people are friendly.

Parking outfront and large carpark out back. Best fish and chips in harpenden. Quick service. Food is delicious. Large menu to choose from. Good price. Clean shop all staff are lovely.

Delicious fish & chips!!! The fish was perfectly crispy on the outside and beautifully flaky on the inside. The chips were very nice too. Although we ordered fish and chips only, we were surprised at the selection of other food! The service was quick, staff very friendly. We will be returning for more! Thank you Skippers!

I absolutely love this place the food is amazing. We are so lucky to have this down the road from us. I normally call them before ordering and they make it within 15 minutes. I’ve just tried their southern fried chicken and It’s delicious. The food is always cooked properly and it’s so hot and fresh. Thank you :-)

Fab fish (regular) cod, chips (medium) and (homemade) mushy peas c.£10 Told to wait 7 mins on ordering as fried to order and service was still fast and efficient. Quality was top-notch across the board. Pretty extensive range of other take-out foods too - including fried halloumi - but what I had was really good. Many people going into the chippy ordered on the website and then collecting... seemed to work well. Open late 6 days too.

Deliveroo have completely let you down Skippers. Soo late and cold. Never again! By the time the food arrived most people were tucked up in bed!

Smallest chip portion Ive ever been handed in near 50 years. So called 'large' wasnt anywhere near a small from any other chippy. That with extremely dry saveloys and other foodstuffs from here, Id say avoid completely. The staff are ok, way too many of them behind the small counter though.

Food is ok. Saveloys were very, very dry. Main reason for the two stars is portion size. I ordered large chips two times now, and the portion size wasnt even comparable to small in every other chippy Ive ever visited in near 50 years. Their 'large' didnt even cover a small plate with chips! Not a one off as I say, twice in a row. The other food is ok (apart from saveloys which feel like they have been under the lights for days to be honest) but with the price of "large" chips and the portion size you would need to spend sit-down restaurant prices for a chippy take away. I know its Harpenden but that doesnt give them the right to charge me a 50 pence a chip ! Long and short: Chip portions are laughable sizes, food is nothing to mention or dried out. Staff are friendly though, but seem to be 5+ behind the counter which makes me wonder how they pay all the wages... maybe by overcharging for chips ? Id avoid, there are better chip shops where you get more food for less or equal price.

Never seen chips so soiled with oil. The cardboard box that contained the chips fell apart and was nearly falling through the paper bag

I ordered a large cod and large chips. The cod turned out to be at best a medium I would have expected and the taste was not cod. At £9.60 it was not good value for money and I would not recommend.

Been twice and both times impressed with the food.

Pie and sausage ok. Chips not great even though I waited for them to be cooked.

Went with my kids to grab a quick meal and was served quickly and with great staff. The young blonde man was quick to help and answered all the questions I had about the kids meals with a smile. Will definitely visit again . Food was great ( I had the fish and kids had the nugget meals) the chips where amazing.

On my recent visit, I was told the fish would be ready in a few minutes. 15 minutes later, and with someone who ordered fish after me having been served before me, I received my fish and chips. They should just tell you how long you are really going to wait, and then you can decide if you want to wait. Very poor customer service.

Very hit and miss here. Have had some very good food from here but on the flip side have also had some very average food as well. The two piece of chicken and chips meal can sometimes be very dry and bland.

Nothing is ever ready, you have to wait or take a ticket & come back, I have visited this shop a number of times & this is always the case. On the last occasion after a 20 minutes wait I collected what I was told was my food only to find upon getting home that something was missing & I had to go back, no appology. The cost is much more that my usual fish & chip shop which is being refurbished. The food maybe OK but the cost & waiting time is not worth it

The fried chicken is the best in the area, the chicken kebab might be even better and the staff are brilliant. They even take special requests in to account. I'm a regular.

Went in and placed my order, they then served everybody who came in after me, when i asked why i was informed their orders were very similar to mine, i ordered fish some of the other people ordered Doner meat , not really similar. 3 men none of them capable of running a bath....shame

Tasty fresh fish and large portions of chips makes this a great take-away. It is also open Sunday which is a bonus.

A really lovely chip shop have been twice now and have had the fried chicken which is delicious and the cod which was lovely and fresh, generous portions does get really busy so you may have to wait a while but worth it

This place has definitely improved in quality of food. The fish was perfectly crispy and light in batter. Fish was cooked just right, juicy flesh and not over cooked or under cooked. Thumbs up! Keep it up skippers.

If fish and chips floats your boat then Skippers is a very good option. The portions are very large and the cod and haddock very tasty. Also has a selection of pies and chicken pieces. Prices are reasonable but you need to be hungry!! Waiting times can be lengthy but still very popular.

By far the best fish & chips I have had for a long time. The fish fish was NOT overrun by the batter and the chips were very good . The only minus point was that there no mushy peas available- on a Friday evening

Fish and chips and the usual extras, pies, sausages etc. If you ask them nicely you may get some "scraps" with your fish and chips (ask a northerner if you don't know what they are!!)

Wonderful food every time! Everything is cooked fresh and the staff are friendly and welcoming. The fried chicken is perfect, the coating is crispy and flavourful and the chicken is always juicy!! Can't fault, always come here!

Slightly subjective, but I think these are the best fish and chips in AL5 & AL3. Never had a bone in the flaky, fresh fish, good old chunky chips and curry sauce to die for.

Fantastic food, the owner is introducing freshly made recipes and always trying out alternative fish & batter following myriad courses to keep up to date with the latest cuisine. Excellent food, well cooked and at amazing prices - very friendly & speedy service too.

Fantastic place for sausages in batter! Usually we are a Godfrey fan but the queue is a joke sometimes, and this is a great alternative short drive away. Also for some reason Godfrey do not have sausages in batter.

Good fish and chips, reasonable price

Harpenden has four Fish ‘n’ Chip shops although they all also do pies, and some burgers and kebabs! One even claims to be the best in Hertfordshire? However, not one of them can deliver a consistent quality product month in, month out!

Very friendly and a good selection of food. Has won our chips of Harpenden award from our scout troop 2 years running.
