Simpsons Fish and Chips in Cheltenham

Popped in here instead of cooking. It was around 7.30 pm and wasn't too busy even though Cheltenham Town was playing at home. It's a bit pricier than most chip shops, but it looks really nice and clean inside, and you can dine in. The food definitely makes up for the price. I had mini fish and chips for £8.80 and you get a side. I had curry sauce, and it was the best I've ever had.

Got told this is one of the best chippies in the UK. Sorry but just bang average overpriced fish and chips. Come to Yorkshire for quality fish and chips.

This review is about 5 months overdue (sorry!). I hired the chippy van to come to my brother’s home for a small surprise 40th birthday gathering. From start to finish, James was AMAZING with helping me sort out timings, menus, logistics etc. During the planning stages, James was so helpful and polite - even though in between, there was a fire at the chip shop! The customer service was faultless, and while my family gathering would be a bit smaller than what Simpson’s would usually cater for from the van, James showed compassion, understanding and thoughtfulness, and accepted our offer to come cater for us. On the evening itself, James and Abbi arrived on time and set up the van without any problems, quicker than we expected which was great as it meant we could eat ahead of schedule! They were so polite and friendly with all of our guests. The chippy van was a surprise for most of the party guests, and having menus typed up and on show for them to see what was available for them to eat was very helpful. The children had specific meals just for them which made them feel special! The van was beautiful, clean and nicely with decorated with fairy lights. The food was served HOT and it was all delicious, drinks were served nice and cold. (On a side note, we’ve never had jalapeño tartare sauce and it was soo good, all of the guests really enjoyed having something unusual on the menu!). All in all, the evening was great, the food was incredible, and it was all thanks to James for making it all happen. The chippy van was the highlight of everyone’s entire day. I can’t thank James enough for allowing us to hire out the van, and for being so collaborative in helping us to achieve an unforgettable night for the birthday girl. There’s a reason Simpson’s is the best fish n chips shop in the whole area and this showed us exactly why! THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Easily the best fish and chips place I’ve been to since stepping foot in the UK! The fish was cod , perfectly breaded and fried and not too greasy. The tapas to start, we ordered the king prawns, haloumi, Thai fish cakes and the calamari- all were excellent. I have to admit that along with the food, the staff was also deserving of 5 stars and some! We were very pleased with both the gentleman who took our order as well as the sweet lady who came to check up on us, chat with us and even offered to look after our little one if he woke up! This place is a must if you’re in Cheltenham or if you’re a diehard fish and chips fan! Usually I take pictures but not this time. :(

I ordered battered halloumi for delivery (as shown in the deliveroo listing). I instead received what are clearly frozen breaded halloumi sticks. I paid £12 which is a complete rip off. Won't be ordering from here again. A shame, as the old style halloumi sticks, which actually resembled the picture, were great.

Been here a few times now and it's always hit and miss as to whether you get a good meal but it was first our time going on a Sunday and it was awful! Cold chips and extremely overcooked fish it was more or less inedible. Honestly for a place that prides themselves on freshly cooked food, this was not. How can you charge the prices you charge and serve inedible food??

We ordered a small fish & chips, chicken burger & chips & 6 scampi. We received most of the food except the fish! The order was fish & chips, they put the tartare sauce in with chips, sadly no fish. 😢 Will think twice before ordering from them again.

11.50pound.for 6cod bites and small chips! Out of 6 cod bites could only eat3 as rest was more batter than fish! Chips were not very good.soggy and cold!

Takeaway- Pro's- staff /service fine. Con's- Stale chips and fish not fresh, hardly ate any of it, too concerned about stomach upset to risk it. Haven't been for quite a while, to say the food has gone down hill is an understatement. Unfortunately, a waste of money, would not recommend or go again.

I ate here tonight and to be honest never will again! Batter tasted like it was burnt, oil was obviously old, chips are rubbish almost like frozen chips. Large cod? Are you kidding me? 15 pounds for a complete disaster of a meal. I could make better than that at home. Not impressed especially for the money. I was expecting a lot better and feel sick now, very disappointed.

Got a lot less than I was expecting. Collected a single regular chips which cost £4.20 and came out at about the size of a large McD fries However value wise I have had better chips from other local chippies and have had more for less. Sorry won't be going back, not enough value.

My husband wanted to celebrate his 80th birthday with a family fish and chip supper. There were 24 of us in total.we had exclusive use of the restaurant . The food was delicious and the staff just brilliant and so helpful! Thank you all! One happy hubby! 😊

We were recommended this place when visiting for football. As soon as we walked through the door I found the staff rude when they grunted at me that the restaurant was closed. Then they took our order and I was made to feel that I was a nuisance for just being there. When I eventually got my food which was ok they’d missed something off my order I asked about it only to be told that I didn’t know what I’d ordered even though both of my boys confirmed what I had ordered. I don’t know if they were having a bad day but customer service was appalling and to charge extra for ketchup when you order a burger is a rip off in my opinion

Picked up a large portion of chips at £5.20. When I got them home they were cold, most of them were black and mouldy and they looked like they had sat in old oil. For a chip shop that won the best chip shop award a few years ago it’s clear standards have dropped considerably. Very Poor indeed

Simpsons are the first “Chippy” we’ve known to do something so unique and beautiful with something so simple, Our absolute favourite Chippy now and we’ve travelled! Brilliant. Please Please Please get your battered chips back in stock. We LOVE them

Incredibly disappointing. Waited over 25 minutes for my order only to get home and find the fish missing! A very expensive portion of chips! The waiting area was overcrowded - the staff were clearly stressed and unfriendly. I’m kicking myself for not checking my order before I drove home, as the customer before me was complaining that their order was incomplete.

Went in on passing, half an hour after they opened for the evening. Ordered regular cod and chips, plus curry sauce, £14.70. Got it home to find, there was no curry sauce and the tiny piece of fish, had either been on the floor and somebody had stepped on it, or it had been cooked at lunchtime, before spending a relaxing afternoon, lounging in the top warming tray. I got half way across the fish before any white appeared between the layers of batter.AVOID! Better value fish and chip shops nearby.

Where were the chips? Absolutely robbed at the price they charged. Such a small portion of chips which was meant to be large? Shame as quality is good but got totally ripped off! Very disappointed.

Never again sorry!!! VERY small portions and overpriced. My fish was mainly batter and tasteless. Half a small tub of curry sauce for £1.70. Large chips were probably the smallest portion I've ever received from a chippy. Like I said Never again!!

Absolutely appalling service and incredibly small portions just about sum up Simpson's coupled with expensive prices We ordered two regular cod and chips and one curry sauce to be delivered,The deliveroo rider handed over the sealed bag and left upon opening the bag we discovered that the curry sauce was missing from the order my wife immediately phoned Simpson's and the male member of staff told her that she had to go and collect the sauce when she replied no he then tried to blame the deliveroo driver for not ensuring it was in the bag my wife then said surely its the staff that prepares and packs the orders not the deliveroo driver?The male member of staff then told my wife that there was nothing more to do about it and hung up!! I am like Simpson's boast also from the east coast and have worked in fish and chip shops and the tiny portions coupled with the cod which resembles plaice insize and there excuses for chips is simply not good enough there are at least three other fish and chip shops in the local area and I will definitely be using those in the future

Food luke warm and not enjoyable

Staff not talkative or engaging with customers. Food portions are small for a premium price. 3 fish and chips one was larger than the other two so either the wrong order or very inconsistent. Fish over cooked and curry sauce was like dishwater.

I regret the need to give some feedback on our most recent experience at Simpsons. We have always enjoyed top quality fish and chips from Simpsons, that is why we are prepared to travel 15 miles to Cheltenham each time we have fish and chips. However, on Saturday 30th September that was not the case at all. My partner ordered 3no Regular Cod and Chips and 2no Curry Sauce, we took our order and drove to a large layby to enjoy our fish and chips, however when we opened the boxes we could not believe what was inside, it seemed there was just 1no Regular Cod and Chips and 2no very small portions of cod and chips, not only being very small, the fish was well overcooked and the small handful of chips seemed undercooked, and the curry sauce was like curry water with no flavour, a straw would have been more appropriate to eat/drink it. The whole meal was appalling quality, poorly cooked and very small portions. The staff could hardly mutter a word and they all seemed to be so unhappy !! We know fish and chip shops can be a bit “hit & miss”, but Simpsons has in the past always been consistent top quality, it seems not anymore. What has gone wrong Simpsons ? Fish and chips is not a cheap meal, spending nearly forty pound on what has to be one of the worst fish and chip takeaways we have ever had is one experience we will not repeat at Simpsons. I emailed Simpsons direct and they couldn't even be bothered to reply, obviously they don't really care about customers. I would not recommend this chip shop.

Schöne Fish and Chips Bude. Leider bei uns den Essig vergessen. Ein bisschen Pommes Salz wäre auch geil gewesen. Sehr geil war der "To-Fish" hat super geschmeckt und bietet auch für Vegetarier eine Alternative. Preise Recht hoch würde ich sagen, aber normal für Englische Verhältnisse denke ich. Alles in allem sehr zu empfehlen 👁️👄👁️

We are on holiday and not familiar with where the best place for fish and chips so Googled “best fish and chips in Cheltenham “. Simpson’s came up and so that’s where we went. They weren’t wrong. Really good food and throughly recommend.

Had a deliveroo order and was given mushy peas instead of curry sauce. Ordered one large fish chips and one regular fish and chips and they were identical small portions. The food wasn't the best either. Only ordered due to a Deliveroo promotion, I will stick to my usual restaurant going forward.

The woman who works in the diner is a gem !!! . She is so customer friendly it was unbelievable . Had fish and chips with peas . Pot of tea . They even give you more chips if you want them for free . Free chip top up !!!!

Simpsons! What has gone wrong? This used to be the best chippy around! We have been buying from you since you opened, and now the last 3 meals we bought have been awful. Popped in for dinner on Saturday night. The food was very nice but rather a lot more expensive than I normally pay. The service was very laboured, but the wait was eventually rewarded.

It's very difficult to write a review and give a star rating to represent everything a person needs to know but as this is all to do with food and not atmosphere or service, then we have to review it based upon the food and to be honest it was really poor and expensive. I know prices have had to go up but are they going up realistically or are prices being hiked up because they can ? £5 for a "large" portion of chips ? £10+ for Haddock ?(plus two fancy boxes) To keep this short, I honestly think this is the worst fish and chip shop I have been to in a long time; if not THE worst. Usually, a shop has great chips but so-so fish, or great pies but bad mushy peas and so you can often excuse one thing but favour another. In this instance, nothing was good. Nothing had flavour and everything, clearly, either pre-cooked and dipped back in the oil to heat it up or had been sitting around getting dry and close to inedible. Haddock batter was very dark brown looking close to burnt. This was, to me, clearly a sign of double dipping into the oil and this resulted in very dry, tasteless and very disappointing fish. This wasn't just one Haddock, it was both, and adding oodles of salt and vinegar did nothing to give it some flavour. Chips were dry and had been sitting around far too long to be something to serve to a customer paying £30+ We are all feeling the financial pinch and we now have to give serious thought to whether we can afford to have a take-away. £30 can, from a supermarket buy you a lot of quality food and it is far more appealing, financially, to grab a bottle of wine for £10 and £20 on food that will be tasty and fill you up than to pay £30 to a business that clearly doesn't care about what it serves. It just can't, because if it did, it really wouldn't take £30 from a customer in return for very over-cooked, sitting around getting dry, food. £23 gets you two, freshly cooked, very tasty, LARGE pizzas from a well known pizza place. I can think of multiple places where £30 for 2 people would buy a veritable, tasty, feast. One thing that is for sure is that Simpson's has been resting on its laurels and bathing in the accolade it once had as a great fish and chip shop. That, for this customer, is all history and once you serve a terrible meal, leaving the customer hugely miffed at, basically, losing £30 of hard earned money, the chances of return custom are zero. Not only that, it results in reviews like this and word of mouth to however many people bother to ask. It's very easy to say "this was the worst meal of my life" as a means of venting displeasure but any sensible person knows that's unlikely, but trust me when I say that this was possibly one of the worst, if not the worst, fish and chips ever. Simpson's: if you are listening, take note. Stop serving in fancy boxes that add to the cost. Go back to basics and cook with heart, love and respect for the paying customer. Produce and serve fresh, quality food that you can be proud of. Don't pre-cook any food that you know you can't shift in a few minutes. People will wait for freshly cooked, quality food, especially if paying £30. It's much better for a customer to end a meal patting their stomach mumbling "that was really good. A bit of a wait but worth it", rather than being given fast service, very poor and extremely sub-standard food to miffed and thoroughly dissatisfied customers with access to reviews, .

Hmmm what to say. I think the place has potential. The atmosphere /venue is lovely but the food was a little let down. I ordered a regular cod and its size varied quite a bit, so the thin part was overcooked and tough whilst the small fleshy part perfect. Which constituted of about 3 bites. I think its worthwhile definitely going for the larger portions which looked very generous. The same with the chips. The flavour was all really nice but it was let down by the above mentioned.

I was very unhappy with the fish I got from Simpsons and at £8 a portion it wasn't cheap. It had disintegrated in the batter and it was dry and tasteless. I have since contacted the shop via email and telephone asking for my money...

I ordered a take out online. When we got it home we discovered that the fish was absolutely terrible - it had disintegrated in the batter and what was there was thin and tasteless. It was £8 a portion and that adds up with 4 people! I contacted them afterwards via email and phone but I haven't heard back from them. It may once have been good here but now the whole experience was very disappointing - don't risk it!

Used to rate this place, I'll never go again and I will highly recommend everyone against it, dont waste your money. Last three or four times I've been it's been exactly the same. Large cod and chips is more like a small fish, the chips have been completely underwhelming, fish is overcooked today as well. So you're paying £15 for a small fish and underwhelming chips, you don't even get tartare sauce or a lemon anymore they want you to spend £2 for it so add a drink and you're spending over £20 for one person. That's collection as well, Deliveroo would be even more expensive. No wonder there is no customers and they are over charging. I can go to a great business and get a large box of incredibly tasty beef brisket and perfectly cooked ndjua or bacon cheese fries, and I'll still have some brisket left over for sandwhiches the next day, all for £14. At the end of the day its white fish dropped in batter with chips, its not hard but they want to charge extortionate prices for it now as well as dropping standards. Really disappointed, they know I'm local as well

I complained only about the chips being hard on the out side and there were lots of little chips quite hard I showed the owner and told her the fish was lovely but the chips were hard and the bits should not be in mixed...

Took a long two friends yesterday (17th) for lunch, three of us had seniors meals, disappointed, we were sat for as long as it takes to make coffee, lunch arrived, definitely not cooked fresh, for that price would expect it fresh. (always used to be)...

Got dinner from Simpsons as a treat ! Was so disappointed- ordered large Cod (£10, but no larger than a reg cod at your average chippy) a haddock (10.25, was smaller than your average piece of cod) large chips(£5) did split between 2 adults but could've eaten more and a portion on mushy peas(1.60) that was about 2 tablespoons! The food was tasty and cooked well but VERY overpriced for the quantity you receive. Won't be rushing back.

Small portions, overpriced food. My usual fish and chips place wasn't open, so I came here as I heard it was great and award winning.... The prices were high, but I thought I give it a try as I dont mind paying for quality. Well, when I opened the boxes at home, to my surprise the £15 Large Haddock and chips was half the size of the £9 large at my usual place. I thought at least it is going to be somewhat special for the taste, but the fish was a bit on the dry side and the batter a little more darker than I would prefer. Chips was great, still, small portion... Rather than handing out fancy boxes, I would prefer a slightly larger portion for the price and make sure the fish is not overcooked.

Have had the tofish (tofu fish) and chips a couple of times recently. It's a buzzing place as it's usually busy (obviously a good sign) and the tofish has a similar consistency to fish and a blandly fishy flavour thanks to being coated in a micro thin layer of seaweed before being battered. All it needs is a little extra seasoning. The chips are very tasty and well cooked. For takeaways it's served in branded cardboard boxes inside a branded strong paper bag. Partner had standard fish and chips, which was reported to be good.

The fish was good. Prawns also good. Nice sit down atmosphere. It is a bit of a walk from city center, but perfectly doable in dry weather.

Marked down for service and atmosphere as it was very very quiet and laid back, whereas I wanted just a quick lunch..... Certainly if you're going to have fish and chips it is also going to be rather expensive with a large cod running out at £16 or more.... However, as I had a few grey hairs I went for the OAP special so it was a great deal at £12.50 which included fish and chips, a pot of tea and mushy peas....

Really dislike this place. Only ever had an order from here twice and I can safely say I’ll never order from them again. I know a lot of people love this place but for me it’s the ridiculous amount of cardboard and lack of actual food that bothers me. I ordered small chips (which were in fact the smallest portion I have ever seen), cod and chips (again the smallest cod I’ve ever seen), jumbo sausage (really nice), and a cheese burger (which I’m told was fairly bland). This order came to just under £27!!!! For a chip shop dinner that’s far too much and not enough food in my opinion! I suggest travelling a little further to Cleeve Fish Bar!!!!

Love this fish and chip shop, we always go on gluten free day, absolutely delicious. The batter is so-light and crisp and a great selection on the menu, highly recommend.

Excellent food and good service. The chips are the best I've ever tasted. The jalapeño tartare sauce is magnificent and not to be missed - not too hot, just delicious with both chips and fish. There are veggie options, which, according to my son, are really tasty, particularly the battered halloumi. Kids can have a micro portion of fish, and if you like them, there are fish bites in portion sizes of 3 or 6 bits. There's a variety of the usual softer drinks available. Probably best of all, there is a restaurant area, which has comfortable seating and a licenced bar, so if you fancy a less fussy meal out, this would be a great option. As far as I can see, there is only one slight drawback, and that is the very small parking area that seems to be shared with the hairdresser and the Thai takeaway. If one is a local, I guess it wouldn't be a problem. However, food this good must attract people from Adam, as in our case, so it might be an issue for some.

If you live in Cheltenham, you'll have been here. Probably. If not, give them a try. The fish is genuinely perfect.

The quality of the fish & chips was definitely above average, but not for the price. I was expecting the best as it has won awards, but I was every so slightly disappointed. Still worth trying if you are prepared to pay over £10 for fish and chips?

The Fish and Chips from Simpsons are excellent. As a customer since they were established in Cheltenham, I have had no problems. Ordering online is easy. Being able to book a time for collection has proved very beneficial. Strongly recommend.

Disappointed. I used to go out of my way to visit, but the last 12 months have not been worth it. This evening the fish was smaller than expected (price has gone up) and over cooked. The Halloumi was burnt to a crisp and un edible. The chips were ok but had better elsewhere. Missing an old friend!
