We decided to buy fish & chips here because there wasn't a queue, in hindsight I'd have queued and waited elsewhere because the fish was awful, neither of us could eat it, it was really tough and we couldn't cut into it. The chips weren't great either more likely frozen because they were all exactly the same size.

Best fish we have had in ages, it’s an absolute must to have fish and chips when in Whitby and we live by the rule the backstreet ones are always the best. We weren’t wrong, the fish was tasty, battered just right. The chips were probably the best tasting I’ve ever had! Well worth visiting the little gem.

There are too many chip shops in Whitby that claim to be "the famous / award winning" and charge accordingly. This one makes no such claim, charges rates more in keeping with my local chippy at home, but was not to that standard. If in Whitby it is probably worth payng the extra and go elsewhere.

Having walked round Whitby for a few hours and walking past most fish shops with long queues outside we were going back to the car when we noticed this down a side alley, not the biggest in Whitby but certainly very nice. Clean inside with a few tables which does make it rather cramped (or cosy 😀) Queuing as we went in but as we got to the fryer he asked if we wanted haddock which we did so 2 fresh haddock were put in, by the time we got to the counter they were ready, brilliant timing. We took them out with out chips and found a bench to sit and eat them on. Really nice food they fish was perfect, batter nice loads of chips, only down side was I got Mushy Peas and by the time we ate they were a Luke warm maybe our fault for walking a bit. Still nice tasting though. Would certainly back when we fancy fish and chips in Whitby

myself and my children ate here today as with it been a bank holiday most places was packed full including the one we usually eat at in whitby, well on reflection i wish we had waited, myself, husband and children all got fish and chips and i must say the chips before even trying them look very strange, very thin and greasy with lots of tiny scrappy ones mixed in, nothing like you would expect at a seaside town, they tasted even worse than they looked, the fish looked nice until we cut into it, the batter was so thick and under cooked and sloppy it was inedible so we all just tried to eat the fish inside it and pushed the batter to the side along with the chips. Weather this is there usual standard or the fact it was a very busy day i dont know but we will not be returning again, worst fish and chips we have all ever tasted.

Walking through Whitby looking for fish @ chips at a sensible price. Came across Siggy’s/Angel takeaway so went in cautiously as the place was empty. We were looking for a nice looking chippy and really fell upon this one as it's not on the sea front or the main street. We were a little dubious as it was very quiet but took a gamble. All food was cooked to order and was probably the nicest fish I've had from a chip shop. Would highly recommend and very friendly service to go with it. On top of all this they were cheaper than all the sea front shops which was just a lucky added bonus.

Absolutely perfect fish and chips, just like fish and chips used to be!! Crispy spikey batter that stays crispy till the last bite and delicious chips that are from freshly prepared potatoes. Their batter is made by the owner using a very old traditional recipe. A lot of places buy ready made batter which does not cook in the traditional way. Superior fish and chips cooked to perfection by the owner of the shop - makes a huge difference!!

Fish for me, fish and chips for the wife then sit on the railings of the adjacent car park and eat the very best fish and chips we have ever had anywhere in the world. Yes there are other places where you can sit down with a knife and fork, some even have waitress service but we prefer to eat with our fingers, straight from the paper and outside. Well, being in Whitby we expected to have good fish and chips and in a way, Siggy's did not disappoint. As a born northerner, I have high expectations and to be honest, the chips left a little to be desired., although the cod was just about perfect. You can't give high reviews all the time and I like to think I'm being objective and honest. The chips were a little on the thin side and had come out a bit soggy. I got the impression that they had been hanging around a bit. Which was strange as it is a very busy little traditional chippy and business on this sunny Sunday lunchtime was brisk.Having said that, the cod was very good and there was nothing to comment about there.Overall, I would say it satisfied my hunger, but not the real treat I was looking for. OK to Good, but I would try somewhere else next time.

Practically an omen if you ask me.I think that we landed at this chip shop just at the right time as it wasn't very busy, you are met by Bob who asks which fish you would like as it is all cooked fresh. Please do not go here if you want a massive menu and fine dining!, this is a proper old fashioned chippy and it's wonderful!. They only serve basic chip shop fare, when I say basic I mean absolutely beautifully cooked food, all fresh and possibly the nicest fish and chips I have ever had!The staff are friendly and the place is clean. It closes early so you won't be able to get your fix after a night out, but trust me you should find time during your day to visit this place. The portions are quite large, my own fault i suppose as I did ask for a large fish, the large fish could easily feed 2 people, you may want your own chips as they are equally as delicious and you may end up fighting if you attempt to share with someone. In my opinion this is the best chippy in Whitby and there are a few!

Walking into Siggy's is like taking a walk back in time to the 60 / 70's when fish and chip shops did what it said in the tin, no kebabs, no pizza, no fancy decor. First time visit to Whitby and had obviously heard the accolades some of the more well known fish and chip shops in Whitby, however decided to try Siggy's after the positive reviews read here.Siggy's exceeded all expectations, welcomed in with such a friendly manner and told immediately that just that morning they had some large haddock in. Well that sold it for me, "Haddock & Chips please". I was then told it will be cooked to order and be around 4 minutes. I have never been to any other Fish & Chip shop where they cook to order, this was a great revelation. When served the batter was a deep golden colour and looked so crisp, the chips were lovely but to top it all a generous helping of scraps (batter bits) sprinkled all over the chips.I couldn't wait to took in so grabbed the nearest bench on the harbour wall and dove in. I can honestly say this was the nicest haddock i have ever eaten, it was large and delicious, the chips sprinkled with the batter bits were just as nice.I'm very happy I didn't get tempted by some of the more well known chip shops, Siggy's really was the highlight of my day in Whitby, I've been talking about it for days since my visit.Fresh fish and chips cooked to order, very well priced, with scraps and served in traditional chip shop paper. Never been disappointed and neither has anyone I've taken there. The fish are huge and always cooked to order, proper chips and very friendly staff. For quality vs cost siggys are unbeatable

We stayed in Whitby for a week over Easter and had the best fish and chips from here. They were outstanding and worth the queue. We planned to come back later in the week only to discover too late that they are not open on a Thursday evening or a Friday. We were gutted!

I've tried all chippys in Whitby and I must say this is the only one that cooks chips brown instead of them white enemic chips. Fish really thick and good quality. Staff pleasant and helpful.

as a regular day visitor to Whitby on a jolly boys outing, the last thing we do is go to siggys for the excellent fish and chips available daily. Our last trip was a fortnight ago and we were not disappointed.Sensibly priced, no frills tasty fish and chips from the proprietor and staff.A hidden gem and not to be walked past, its adjacent wetherspoons little angel up the alley. Will be visiting again.Alan &The county durham crew

Visited Sunday 15th March. Closed sign was in place but the boss said he would cook 2 cod and chips for us. 5 minutes later, sorted. Absolutely brilliant. Had a lovely chat with Siggy (32 years in business). Top man; wish him all the best for the future.

The best fish and chips I've ever had. Everything you could hope for from an unassuming northern side street chip shop. Shabby decor, blunt service and food cooked to perfection.

We called in a couple of weeks ago. They were the best fish and chips that I have had for a long time. I am very critical, but could find nothing wrong at all. The batter was cooked to perfection, and stayed crispy and non greasy until the end. Proper fish and chips!

I call in here every time we visit Whitby, they are amongst the best fish and chips I've had, and I am very fussy!!. They are cooked fresh when you order and the batter is superb. Don't be put of by the location, you will not be disappointed.

Paid another visit to my favourite takeaway fish and chip shop - just as good as I remembered.Asked for a small cod and chips this time, fish still big and was very well cooked, light crispy batter and juicy succulent cod.I love the chips, as another reviewer said, they're not greasy and are so tasty! This place is one of Whitby's best kept secrets - try them, you won't regret it...

Was on a day out with a group of biker friends,we went down the side of an alley and I thought I dont want food from this chip shop. There was a queue, so I thought ok food must be ok!!.For £5.50 you can have cod and chips, and what a decent size it was..The chips were fantastic, not greasy. The cod was lovely, just needs a fraction longer where the batter was a bit thicker..Staff were very gd, owners happy and cheery, looking forward to their chips nxt yr,as lady says they shut for winter, and having the kitchen done.

Visited on a sunday day out with kids.couldnt be bothered waiting in the queue's at all the other chippys in whitby so found this little place tucked away with hardly a sole in, which did make me wonder but thought it was just cos it was so hidden. The fish n chips were awful swimming in grease, fish didnt taste great either and the batter was horrible.Run down scuffy looking place wish we had queued elswhere would not return, as they say "good things come to those who wait".

Visited Whitby & obviously its got to be fish & chips for dinner.. Loads of places/restaurants offering food but we just wanted takeaway fish & chips to sit on the Harbour front & eat out of paper like they used to be served.. Magpies, Quayside & all the larger eateries serve them in boxes & just by chance we saw a couple eating fish & chips out of paper so we asked where they got them from & they pointed us in the direction of Siggys... Looks like an old fashoined chippy & serves the best fish & chips I've ever had... we sat on a bench looking out into the harbour & it wasn't long before a couple walking past asked us where we'd got them from... Looks like a family run business & they've got it right. Quality food at reasonable prices...

Our family has been visiting Whitby for years - and the first point of call for fish and chips has always been Siggys, a small establishment tucked away alongside The Angel pub, near the Swing Bridge and the Railway Station, alongside the harbour. It amuses us to see other over-priced establishments seeking accolades. It amuses us even more to see people stood for ages in a queue at Magpies. When I want fish and chips I am usually hungry. I do not want to stand for ages in a queue. I want to eat.And I like my fish cooked fresh. At Siggys there is usually only a short queue. The fish is almost invariably cooked to order. And the quantity is enough to satisfy the biggest of appetites.Whilst you can eat as a take-away, there are also a small number of tables so you can also eat indoors. Nothing fancy, mind. Wooden forks. No table cloths. Hot and cold drinks available.Best of all the staff are Yorkshire folk: friendly and helpful. As I said, we have been getting our fish and chips from Siggys for decades. And hopefully we will be doing so for decades to come!

First visit to this chippy and it certainly won't be the last. We have been in many chippys in whitby and queued for ages at some but this chippy the service and customer service was fantastic. The fish and chips was that good the seagulls didn't get a look in lol.

This is the 2nd time I have had takeaway fish & chips from here and both times they were superb! The fish was cooked to order and HUGE, the chips were really tasty. For only £5.50 this is very reasonable by Whitby prices and certainly well worth it - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

What a find! This has been the loveliest meal we have had this year. The food is beautiful, my husband had haddock and loved it. I had rib of beef and it was just delightful some of the best food I have had. The landlord was super lovely and nothing was too much trouble. The staff were lovely and attentive but not over bearing. The menu gives lots of choice and there is a brilliant gin menu. They are dog friendly too so we all had a wonderful time- thank you. We have booked up for Sunday lunch when we are next on holiday over here. I couldn’t recommend this place enough
