We were 7 for Sunday Lunch .... much dithering and choosing of starters and mains and drinks!!!! .... handled with good humour, friendly patience and understanding ... resulting in an excellent experience for all concerned. ..... quite delicious food!!!

Some of the best pub - or even restaurant - food we have enjoyed in quite some time. Delicious meals, beautifully cooked and attentive service. Absolutely brilliant. Will definitely come here again and tell everyone (who may already know how great it is here!!)

I visited number of times during my extended stay around the area. I think there’s something about this place that made me keep coming back. Lovely cozy atmosphere. Really friendly and helpful staffs. And last but not least, really nice food. The steaks were impeccable every time. Will definitely come back.

First time dining at this amazing place, we had a family lunch for my son's 40th Sunday 26th Jan and I was so impressed with the presentation of the food, attentive staff and quick service we received. Highly recommend the roast pork with very unusual crackling that tasted delicious, Looking forward to coming back and I have told all my friends to try you out. Keep up the good work.

Food was good but service very poor. 20 minutes to even take drinks. Another 20 to ask about starters. Couldn’t even figure out we had pre booked. Then to top it off they try to over charge us £90 and when we correct it, they correct the price but not the service charge with it. Won’t visit again

Amazing Sunday lunch with my wife and our dog in the bar area. Food, wine, and service was all brilliant and also the food recommendations from the manager. We had a thoroughly lovely time !

Only ever drank in the garden. It’s a lovely village pub with a nice open main dining area specialising in quality meat in the main. Unfortunately we were sat in a smaller room at the back. Nothing wrong with the decor but obviously less energy there. Also had to hunt down the waiters if you needed a drink, who were fully occupied in the main room. As a result service was a bit lumpy. Nice enough when you got the service, albeit a little inexperienced. We were 8.30 sitting so many of the special meat cuts were off (to be fair you can place orders on line in advance). I went for standard ribeye medium rare. Was decent not excellent though. Slightly what I was expecting for provincial restaurants that are offering premium. It’s Hawksmoor prices here but it sure ain’t Hawksmoor.

What a hidden gem this is! I stumbled across this restaurant just out of chance and thought I’d give it a go for mine and my partners anniversary and I’m so pleased we went. We shared a chateau cut and it was divine! The food was out of the world, the service was top notch and I simply can’t fault it in anyway possible. Have already been recommending to friends and family and will 10000% be returning.

Tried this one after being to their other pub The Plough Inn and this too was exceptional. Food is just divine, atmosphere lovely and cozy and fantastic service. Really cannot recommend this " chain" highly enough, every single visit all parties have left absolutely raving about it.

Had such a fantastic Sunday lunch here with friends. The food and service were both exceptional. It’s not somewhere that might immediately appeal to vegetarians but I had a lovely veggie meal and felt that the vegetarian options weren’t an afterthought to tick a box (which is often the case in places that are proud of their meat options!).

First visit here and the Inn did not disappoint. Very warm welcome on arrival, great friendly service, and a delicious lunch. A relaxed atmosphere in cosy surroundings.

We were visiting the area so my daughter booked Sunday lunch here, we really liked the look of the pub before we got inside, we were more impressed when inside, beautiful character and great job with Christmas decorations. There was a really nice atmosphere, we were shown to our table by a very polite friendly lady who welcomed us on entering the pub. We all enjoyed a selection of starters, however it’s the main courses I must rave about, this was the best Sunday lunch I have had in many years, everything was absolutely fantastic, the Beef was amazing (for me to say this it must have been good) venison was similar, cooked perfectly, then the 2 roast for sharing, unbelievable good. We couldn’t manage a dessert, unfortunately. I have added this pub as a favourite to re visit.

From the time you walk in you are made to feel at home. The ambience is of a small family run establishment, but the service is stellar. Alice, our waitress was cool and kept us entertained.

The food and alcohol are absolutely delicious and the staff are incredible; JP and Lauren made our entire evening with a newborn - we cannot thank you enough! This is now our new favourite place to eat and drink, thank you! Can’t wait to bring all our friends here.

Second visit after an truly exceptional weekend dinner and this time we followed with a Sunday roast ……. could’nt have been more different . The table wasnt ready , we were asked to delay our food order as the “kitchen was swamped!” . The food arrived in 2 parts with 2 meals delivered followed 10 mins later by the other 2 and part of the food was cold. Just too busy, the waiter didnt have a clue - don't take the booking if you cant manage the volume.

Great attentive service from Alice this evening for a meal for my husband’s birthday. The food was absolutely excellent never had a better steak we will definitely be back thank you! 🤩

What a wonderful gem of a restaurant, we had Sunday Lunch here and it was a great experience from both food and Staff. My wife had the roast beef and I had the Pork belly both meals were excellent, tasty, well presented a real Sunday Lunch to remember. We will definitely be back soon and introduce our family to the experience as well. Well done Shurlock you tick all the boxes.

First time at The Shurlock Inn for lunch, we thought Fish n' Fizz sounded interesting. Lovely fish and chips and the glass of fizz was really good too. Would thoroughly recommend!

Perfect birthday meal - staff were very attentive, the food came very quickly and the two fillet steaks we had were cooked perfectly. The chunky chips were fantastic, crispy on the outside and fluffy inside. Of course the price is on the high side, but we thought it was justified.

First visit and definitely not the last. Had the most amazing lunch yesterday. A few had beef and the others had the sharing roast. Absolutely beautiful. Service was great and our waiter was brilliant. Can’t remember his name but an absolute credit to the Sherlock !! Have booked another table for the end of the month it was so good.

Portions were small. I ordered the celeriac and the portion was tiny for a main meal. I got a slice of celeriac, *one* mushroom and some kale... that was it. Compared to others at the table who had big roasts. I left hungry.

4 of us came with our 2 dogs, the food and service was amazing as usual. The sunday roast for 2 was delicious and very good portion sizes! Alice served us and she was so friendly and attentive, we couldn’t have asked for more. Drinks came out really quickly and as soon as they were finished we were asked if we wanted a top up. Will definitely be back!

We had a lovely evening at the Shurlock Inn on Friday. Service, atmosphere and food were wonderful. The friendly staff were great and we would thoroughly recommend the Chatobriand!

If you want your special day to be ruined please visit this place. I went there this evening with my husband and unfortunately, he found a thick, short hair in his burger. I absolutely understand, these things happened but the way the supervisor dealt with it is scandalous. I would really recommend her to work on her customer service. She did not apologize at all and claimed the chefs are either bald or blond so it couldn’t be theirs. I watched the chef that prepared the burgers and he had a visably long beard so I guess she missed something. She treated us like liars that want to get a free meal. My husband kept apologizing for complaining and both of us felt very embarrassed by her attitude. Still not a single sorry. Please avoid as the experience is not worth the money.

I asked my son what he wanted to do for his 18th birthday meal. He said a steak. I’d read about the Sherlock Inn so we went for a cocktail to investigate. We had such a lovely time and the landlord/pub manager? was so friendly we knew this was the place to come. Yes, you can get steaks cheaper elsewhere but if you want a steak cooked in a way you can trust then the Sherlock Inn is the place to go. My son has had a lovely time and the chefs made a special brownie with an 18th birthday message for him. We didn’t ask for this and it was such a lovely touch. We’ve loved the good atmosphere and attention to service and would thoroughly recommend this place. Thank you to everyone for a lovely evening.

Location looks great. Service was in need of tightening up (except behind the bar who were excellent) No condiments put out until after food arrived and when they did arrive half our food was already eaten. Quality of food (Sunday Roast) was v good. Set up for various large parties but feel they prefer tables of 4 or 6 no larger!

Visited with some friends and had the Surf and Turf set meal at £68pp, had high hopes for an amazing meal. We found the king Prawns were overcooked and you couldn’t actually pull some of the shells away from the meat. The steak was tough and some parts inedible. The sides were also disappointing, the mac and cheese, dry! One person in our party had a meal off the menu and had to send it back due to being flavourless and bland. They did replace her meal promptly and the replacement was much improved. The service was very good. Overall a very expensive meal that did not live up to expectations.

Phenomenal restaurant. Now come here for special occasions (as we did for a birthday last night) and never disappoints. Great steak, really good service and super layout. We love it! 🤗

Fabulous birthday lunch with amazing Wagu Sirloin and sides. Joe made me the best old fashioned I have ever had! I have had a few so no mean feat! Excellent service, amazing food and highly recommend. Will be back!

We shared the 1 kg Tomahawk. It was amazing and pictured was what was left! Service was excellent, drink specials were wonderful , and the sides were tasty. Highly recommended if you really enjoy a steak cooked to perfection in a clean and lovely English pub setting.

The 3rd time this year I've eaten here and always consistently good. The steaks are seasoned, cooked and rested perfectly. Good wine to go with the steak and everything else in between. Even though the restaurant is in the arse end of nowhere it's definitely worth visiting. Thank you Joe, Callie and dilyan for making every trip worth it. 5 out of 5

This is a gorgeous pub / restaurant with so many great specials options - tomohawk for 2, beef Wellington for 2. And their drinks list - both wine and cocktails - is exceptional.

Fantastic dinner for our sons 16th birthday, on a night they would normally be closed, but opened especially for our party of 13. Good food and excellent service. Would highly recommend

We had been looking for a place like this, ever since the Corn Stores in Reading closed. Pleased to say we found it. Lovely place with excellent food and friendly helpful service. Everyone wanted to make sure we had a nice evening and we certainly did. Highly recommend this place for a special meal out or just to spoil yourself.

Just a superb dining experience. My wife and I come regularly and The Shirlock never disappoints. Easy to book, warm greeting when you arrive, before being able to choose from a comprehensive drinks menu (great local beers, vast array of wines and cocktails). The food menu has exquisite offerings, we tend to order from the Specials menu which features Chateaubriand and cuts of Wagyu steak. Worth paying the extra money for every day of the week in my book. Staff are really warm, attentive and know their stuff. It’s also really lovely to be positioned at a table overlooking the kitchen, seeing what delights are being cooked up. One of the best gastronomic experiences in Berkshire hands down, please go if you have not visited!

Our first visit as it was about equal distance for both of us. We sat in a lovely shaded area outside. We opted for the limited option lunch menu which was a good choice, however neither of us was impressed with the bavette, far too chewy. Side dishes we a bit pricey (£5-£7) but lots of it. Service was good but strange choice of music in the background, maybe techno. Would I go back, certainly, especially in the evening. Not a cheap place but mainly high quality.

Fabulous pub, placed on a secondary road near Reading. If you are a steak lover this is your place to go. They do have local steak British product, cocktails and good wines. Sunday roast is also amazing. I celebrate my birthday a couple of weeks ago and they offered me a surprise little dessert with a written Happy birthday on it! That was so nice!! It is my second time here and I really really recommend it. Nicely decorated inside with a lovely outdoor area too. I loved the open kitchen!

This was our 2nd visit this week after a roast dinner on Sunday. We could not fault the staff and manager Carl for making our special day even more amazing. The service was amazing from all and the food was cooked to perfection. By far the best meal I have ever had. Will definitely will be returning 😁

We came here on Sunday for a roast and thought it was lovely. All the food was really nice, especially the beef! Really nice atmosphere and all waiters and waitresses were lovely and attentive. Only slight downside is we waited a little while for our mains, but for a very busy Sunday afternoon it really wasn't too bad. Would definitely return!

We have been to the Shurlock Inn on many occasions and the steaks and prawns have always been delicious. Unfortunately, this time the steak was undercooked, chewy, under seasoned and tasteless even though on the outside it looked well done. The prawns were presented nicely but were soft like they had been soaked in water and the taste was as if they had been cooked in dirty oil. The chips were no better a disappointing meal and extremely expensive!!!! The waiter was friendly and polite, but she knew the food was not particularly good :( Not sure why the Managers are letting food like this leave their Kitchen they need to try some of it and ask themselves would they be pleased to pay all that money for mediocre food! This is a real shame as it was one of our favourite places to go.

Really disappointed how this place has gone down hill since Martin Shires left. It was always booming then with a great atmosphere! The most recent insult is the increase in the beer prices! There’s no one in the restaurant and now there will certainly be no one in the bar! Sort it out head office!! (Or are you planning on closing another establishment)?

Booked in advance based on a voucher gift present from our daughters.. The day before our booking we received a reminder and link to the menu, 5 main course dishes plus streaks plus a fish special. On arrival we were told no vegan burger and no partridge. We said no problem as we were going to have the venison. No comment made. When ordering the venison, we were told it was not available. But that you had a chicken dish instead of the partridge. We were disappointed unsure how 3 of 5 dishes can be removed within 24 hours with some comments made about a change of menu. We considered leaving but were persuaded to stay and have a steak. We would not normally eat steak out. My wife would only eat a fillet as it should be soft. Asked if it was Ok about half way through eating them, we said they were tough and overdone we persevered to eat it, but they were tough, tasteless, and not good. At the end of the meal, we made it quite clear that it was one of the worst fillet steaks we had eaten. Not to be repeated.

Friendly staff, even though they were busy they were very attentive and kept an eye on us and made sure we were ok. Food was lovely, not a place where you would leave hungry. The atmosphere was really nice. Would highly recommend

It's not often I post a review but I was really disappointed with our dinner last Saturday. Initially the service was excellent whilst the restaurant was quite full but as the evening went on it was apparent that the staff were starting to go home and by 10pm we had to order another bottle of wine at the bar and return 20 mins later to order teas and coffees. Originally we had a taxi ordered for 11.30pm but changed it to 11pm as we felt a vibe from the staff that they wanted to get rid of us. Previously we have always had fantastic steaks at the Shurlock but this time 4 of our party had Peppercorn sauce which was decidedly odd. It was almost as if the kitchen had run out of the proper ingredients (maybe cream) and we had a weird thin, vinegary, sugary sauce. We sent it back and received an identical replacement. It was a real shame as it really did ruin the steak. We gave the waitress our feedback for the second time but it felt like we weren't really listened to and no approach was made by the Manager to us. All six of us left saying we would not return again, so Shurlock you need to do better!

I’m a bit dissatisfied with how the managers treated the staff behind the bar on thursday the woman who was clearly the manager had a go at the lovely lady behind the bar infront of customers and the rest of the restaurant i think it’s very unprofessional and quite unfair on the poor young woman who left shortly after. do better :(

We used to visit the Shurlock often but that was before we had two pretty bad Sunday lunch experiences. On one occasion our chicken was undercooked in places ( actually raw on my husband’s plate) and the next time it was very poor with watery gravy which wasn’t how it used to be . My husband vowed never to go back but I really wanted to return and try again. It’s been a while but this time my husband relented and we booked Saturday lunch. After our lunch, I’ve finally given up too. I had 3 large prawns for my starter which cost £12.50 and fish and chips for main. The prawns were nice but at that price they weren’t worth it. My battered fish was tasteless and almost had a watery taste as if it had been frozen and defrosted and then battered . My husband had hummus which wasn’t great and his wagu burger was disappointing. My husband commented to me that a restaurant that prides itself providing good steaks should mean , a wagu burger is a doddle . It was a very average lunch for 2 that coat around £107 ish including 12.5%. The only saving grace was the young girl with the auburn hair who served us. She was lovely and attentive but that’s just not enough to make us return. My husband said he will never return and sadly, I concur. We felt was no point complaining because I remember the reaction over the raw chicken on our Sunday lunch. We just wanted a nice lunch on a Saturday afternoon this time yet again, that didn’t happen. .

Went her to celebrate a family birthday. Service from the moment we got there was warm and welcoming. Some lovely sparkling English wine to start, tasty sourdough and a fantastic selection of steak in offer. Food was cooked beautifully and wine list is great. Lovely birthday brownie for desert was a great touch!

The food….. no words can describe how sensational the Sunday lunch sharing platter is! Sadly I had to have the fillet steak this Sunday as my husband and his friend shared the roast sharing platter - the fillet was to die for! We had the most amazing lunch! Thank you. Off to join slimming world…..

We had a rare child free evening and wanted to head out for a lovely meal, after being recommended by a friend we booked a table at Shurlock Inn. My husband and I had a drink at the bar beforehand where two men were having a drink on the table next to us. They were talking extremely loudly between themselves and also across the bar to two female bar staff members. Some of the conversation was very crude and it appeared as if the two men knew the two female bar staff. One man shouted “when are you on?”, the female bar member replied “what, my period?” and then they all chuckled! They continued to have this strange kind of banter too and from across the room where other customers were trying to enjoy a drink. We thought it was very unprofessional and we felt very uncomfortable and overlooked as customers. We then headed to our table, and our waiter greeted us and gave us our menus. He too dabbled in the weird “banter” in the bar area previously. We said we’d like a couple of minutes deciding on our food but ordered a bottle of wine. Our table was just in front of the open kitchen where a chef noticed we had been seated for about half an hour but hadn’t ordered any food. He then prompted our waiter to take our order - “table 5 are waiting to order”, he said. Despite all of this the food was out of this world. We had the prawns, followed by steak and it was all so delicious!

Celebrating my son’s birthday as this is his favourite place for steak - Food was amazing, so were the cocktails! The service was great too! Will definitely be back.

I had high hopes for this place having driven past it a lot and a few friends have said nice things but I have to admit it didn’t live up to expectations. Portions were small and very expensive for what you get.. very little stood out about my experience dining here.

My mum and I arrived and were greeted with a smile. They sorted out a place for her to sit in her wheelchair. Food was exceptional and waiter just bang on the mark in terms of attention Vs leaving alone. With a gluten issue he was easily able to assist and even talked me into a delicious creme brulee and apple dessert. Yummy

If you like steak, I mean really like steak, this is the place. Try the smoked sirloin. It's as buttery tender as smoked salmon. Side dishes are great but it's all about the meat. It's very expensive but utterly worth it. My partner and I ate in silence! You can also share a 1kg tomahawk if you like. Real treat and staff were fantastic. Recommended.

We are very frequent diners at this smashing pub restaurant. Service is always charming, and it is that and the reliably good quality of food that brings us back repeatedly. Steaks are really good, puds are wonderful too.

We love this place, food is always first class and staff are very helpful and pleasant. First time we had Sunday lunch, the beef was tender and cooked perfectly. Duck fat roast potatoes and vegetables delicious. Deserts were so so good, especially the Orange Bread...

Highly recommended place - but disappointed In the 2020’s you’d expected better vegetarian fayre. The starter was a few pieces of halloumi with a large splat of lumpy cream (which was also used for the other starter) on a standard toast. Main was an equally disappointing burger - ketchup requested and delivered in a finger size “bowl”. Clearly the place has no extractors as the place stank of meat and fish. Nice setting but sadly won’t be coming back Service was amateur especially as place was totally empty though the manager tried his best. An empty restaurant on a Sat afternoon the week before Xmas might be a telling sign Probably one of the worst vegetarian dining experiences of late especially for the price
