Very much overpriced and my fish and chips were undercooked and soggy very gross will not return don’t recommend to anyone I expected It to cost maybe £8-£9 but no £12.50 I think maybe more than that and the wait was ages went in to collect it and the staff were rude and unhelpful and I was given no cutlery and had to pay for sauces Then I opened the box up outside and it was all soggy and a strange colour very off putting almost looked raw Just ended up eating some of the chips

On Saturday 11th June, my husband ( having developed a headache ), bought a small box of paracetamol (about 60p from Tesco) and a small 500ml bottle of water (say £1.50) TOTAL COST WAS £5.20!!! I don't begrudge anyone making a profit, but that's ridiculous. Well done, you caught us once, but we'll not be coming back.

They’ve got a grotty old fridge display with discoloured plastic bowls of watery tinned tuna, chopped up bits of sweaty ham, bright yellow grated cheese which all look awful. I had a pastie which was edible but there was no meat in it and an ok coffee out of their machine. It’s a really poor effort and with a bit more care could be a hundred times better. Whoever is in change obviously doesn’t care about food and the staff and bored and surly. Avoid!

I am local to the area and visited today to spend some time at Rame Head and on the beach at Cawsand-Kingsand. Seeing half the menu on the board outside was marked as 'unavailable' but that pasties were still on offer, I attempted to venture in to procure my snack. A harrassed woman serving told me very bluntly to go back outside and wait. Fair enough, in these times, although there was no signage to indicate their policy and seemingly no system to organise customers. I had no idea whether I woiuld be called in to order or what the process was A man wandered past me as I politely queued and went straight in to grab a drink from the fridge and presumably to order food. I don't blame him for his apparent rudeness as there was zero organisation. He would have had no idea that I was the one person queue. Various people wandered from the ice cream section to the left in an attempt to pay, along with the queue jumper. I still waited, along with another lady who asked what was going on. I told her I had been told to wait outside. She also politely waited. People from the ice cream section asked what they should do and the aforementioned lady announced to all assembled that 'this man has just wandered in'. I agree, he was rude in his demeanor but given the complete lack of organisation, no-one knew where they should be, how to order or how to pay. The whole feeling was that the staff couldn't cope and that they felt they were doing us a favour by serving us. Come on, you have had months to figure this out! In the end, I stood outside completely ignored until I decided that this place did not deserve custom and went off to find delightfully courteous and organised service elsewhere. I notice that other reviewers have also commented on the rudeness of the staff here, and the management don't dignify this with a response. This place really doesn't deserve to be in business, in my humble opinion.

It must be difficult to implement "Covid" measures in these times but surely you don't have to be rude! Stand outside until you're not invited but ordered in and asked which side you want hot food or ice cream. No smile or pleasant interaction during the ordering process. The chips and sausage rolls we had were delivered outside and were delicious and the guy who cooked them and brought them out quite friendly but experience definitely reduced by the grumpy front of house lady. There are signs to say the business is up for sale so maybe they've had enough and experienced plenty of rude customers themselves. For us that was one of the worst issues of a half term break, most shops/ eateries etc were quite rude and not particularly welcoming but they've all had a tough year and are perhaps more scared of the virus than of reduced income.

We ordered 2 bottles of cider and asked for glasses, they responded by giving us a plastic cup and charging us 5p for it (how classless and petty). We sat outside to eat and the fish and chips were simply dreadful, THE worst I've ever had in my life. The pasties looked OK but were bland and very ordinary. After finishing and going to leave we were rudely harassed and chastised by an angry elderly woman (we assumed to be the owner) for not clearing the table (that's what staff are for). A friend of ours recommended we go to Cawsand and buy fish & chips. This appeared to be the only available shop, so we assumed that it must be this one. The fish & chips were cooked to order, so were hot, but seemed to be of a similar type to what you might get if you bought it from a supermarket ready battered and fried it at home - not what I'd expect from a real fish & chips shop. I guess that trying to supply a range of items like they do, they probably struggle to excel in every area. Not the largest portions I've seen either....

This shop is a happy find in a very very small Cornish village. Some of the reviews are a bit harsh as this shop. Its pretty much the only take away shop in Cawsand, as such I noticed they get very very busy in the summer holidays. But provide a little bit of everything that you might need on a day trip. The property is not very big, and it gets very busy, but it seems to do what it can in such circumstances. I have seen reviews about the pasties, but the lady in the shop told me they buy in them in from a well-regarded Cornish bakery, so really they cannot be blamed when they do not make them. The fish has improved from my first visit, they seem to take on board the comments and now provide fresh fish fillets in batter. The ice cream is amazing, and the sweets and beach goods keep my children asking for money! Their salads are a bit plain. But as a such a small shop which tries to cater for a bit of everything it wouldnt be fair to ask for more. I wouldnt let such trivial things spoil our trip to such a lovely village.

The ice cream here is delicious. They get points for that. We got Cornish pasties one day, and they looked very big and tasty. But when we cut into them it was like a game of "find the meat". I actually asked my husband if he had picked up vegetarian ones by mistake until half way through I found a lump of beef. Still, the diced potato was plentiful. Looking back I should have taken a photo, but I didn't think about it at the time. And to add insult to injury the pastry is dry. Then today we decided to try again. I have literally just finished my cod and chips from there. And the experience has caused me to jump straight on here to warn others. For a start, I see other reviewers say "this isn't a restaurant or fish and chip shop so stop expecting so much". Trouble is, they sell fish and chips, so you kind of expect tasty fish and chips. Now my expectations weren't affected by being by the coast or in Cornwall, I'd be happy with your average fish and chips. What we got was distinctly poor. The chips had begun to collapse in on themselves, I'm not really sure what causes that. The fish was not exactly a big portion, but you can forgive that when its tasty. But how on earth do you make fish rubbery and chewy??? That's a new experience on me. And each time you bit into the batter you could feel and taste the grease from it. I'm not one to often leave bad reviews, but I really do feel aggrieved by what I received from this place. So my advice would be pop in for an ice cream and a browse of the shop, but don't touch the pasties or the fish and chips. You have better choices for hot food in the village.

We were very grateful to have had the Shop to go to for takeout lunch when we visited Cawsand on vacation in Cornwall recently. What a lovely wee place Cawsand is to visit if you are in this part of Cornwall. It is so beautiful that we spent a couple of hours just sitting by the beach in the sunshine enjoying the marvellous view over to Plymouth Sound. You can even take the wee passenger ferry from right there on the beach into the heart of Plymouth's Marina wich is 10 minutes from the main shopping precinct. But I digress - we only wanted a lite bite for lunch and the shop met our needs perfectly. The staff were friendly and obliging - even cut our huge Cornish Pasty in two for us when we asked and made lovely fresh coffee which we enjoyed sitting outside on their bench in the village square looking out to the bay. And their fresh baked flapjacks were very tasty as well. Go visit Cawsand it's lovely and enjoy something from The Shop in the Square - you won't be disappointed - we weren't. Thank you to The Shop

I'm not sure what people are expecting of a small beach shop. It's not a chip shop or a fine dining restaurant... It is a beach shop. Ive visited numerous times with my family and I've always found it a friendly and well run environment. The food is of a good standard, maybe not if you've got your head stuck half way up where the sun doesn't shine... But the shop caters for a wide range of tastes both food and drink. I've always found the staff to be incredibly polite. The owners clearly look after the younger staff and the older employees have been there since I started visiting back in 2010! They recognise my children and are always so helpful and kind.I'm honestly not suprised the owners can look grumpy sometimes... But wouldn't you if you woke up at 5am every morning for the deliveries then stayed open past opening hours (sometimes gone 9pm) to serve food to the late comers. This little shop is a credit to the village. The owners and the staff deserve 5 star reviews. They all work hard especially during the summer months. Food is scrummy and portion sizes are spot on. I'd never fault this place.

I had a less than pleasurable experience here back in July 2014. After a long hike along the Rame Head heritage path with friends, this seemed like the ideal place to stop for a pasty and a drink. After paying more than I wanted to for the pasty, my request for filling up a flask with tap water was denied by a member of staff. Very stingy of them, as a student on a budget I was not prepared to fork out for bottled water. I turned to the local pub, the Cross Keys Inn, which of course obliged to my request. In addition to this, my friend's portion of cheesy chips consisted of chips and grated cheese. No, not melted. Just cold grated cheese thrown around the chips. Lovely.

Let's start by focussing on what The Shop in the Square is and is not.The clue is in the name. It is not a restaurant, and does not claim to be a restaurant. Quite what it is doing on Tripadvisor as a restaurant in the first place I have no idea. Do not expect gourmet cuisine here. It is also not a two-a-penny cheap and cheerful shop on a bustling seaside resort such as Newquay. It is also not a bakery or a fish and chip shop and does not try to be, so do not expect freshly battered fish and freshly peeled potatoes. If you want a proper sit-down meal then go to a restaurant such as the Rising Sun or the Cross Keys. If you want chip-shop chips get in the car and drive 20 minutes each way to Torpoint. What this place is, is a lovely little shop in a beautiful and exclusive village in North Cornwall that does a good trade in beachwear, essentials and beach food.if you are spending a day or a few days in Cawsand and want a pasty, pizza, baguette, fish and chips, bacon sandwich or a traditional Cornish ice cream - this place is ideal. They do a good range and that they are always queued out of the door is testament to their success. On a peak day in August, expect there to be queues and expect quick and efficient service. And expect to pay prices that reflect the location and the convenience. We go back here year after year and always make sure we have a bacon sandwich, pizza and a pasty and of course a Kelly's Ice Cream and get nothing but friendly service from the owners.

Not wishing to go into the details, but I know for a fact that the Cornish pasty I ate from here made me 'ill'. How disappointing you can't buy a simple snack without this happening.

This is the only real shop in cawsands so you have to use it really. Which probably explains why it is still going. The main lady is so miserable and rude. Every time we went in for an ice cream, chips or baguettes she was still the same. The prices for everything in the shop are very over priced too. It's not really a cafe, just serves food with a few seats outside.

On the way back from the beach one of our party was in the mood for chips - that's what you often do when at the seaside right? Firstly we were amazed that even though they are heavily promoting "take away food" we were given a ticket and told to sit outside and wait for the food! We waited at least 10 minutes. But good chips are (just about) worth waiting for! What we were given was a small portion of FROZEN chips and a deep fried very cheap sausage! They obviously do not rely on repeat trade and they certainly won't be seeing us again!

We visited this establishment on a Saturday, being from Anstruther we know a fair amount about chip shops and as I work in a chip shop I felt it wasn't much to expect something decent. Wrong!Firstly, my dad tried to order 2 things on the menu only to be told they weren't available. Then we come to the actual chippy food! The fish is clearly bought in pre battered, my friend couldn't eat it as it was so bad. My sausage was overdone, the chips weren't great and the price was very steep!!! My brother ordered a burger and chips, only we didn't get any chips. Went back to be told we hadn't ordered chips (we had and had paid for them) and if we wanted more would have to pay again.Overall not a great experience, wouldn't go here again!

We only had about 5 minutes until the ferry and I was starving. This place is right on the beach so went here for a steak pasty. It was alright.. didn't compare to somewhere like Oggy Oggy's or Ivor Dewney's in Plymouth. And really overpriced at £3.45 for just a pasty. Should have waited to go to Cap'n Jaspers on the other side of the ferry ride for a cheap takeaway.

After a walk from Cremyll to Cawsand we decided to stop at the shop for fish & chips and a couple of pasties. The length of time we waited for the meal convinced me they had gone to catch it! When we opened it we realised they hadn't.We felt ripped off by the cheap frozen imitation fish and the cardboard chips! As for the pasties, this will be some people's first impression of a Cornish pasty! They should stick to ice cream and postcards . We asked if they could put some water in our dogs bottle only to be told we could buy some if we wish! It's the least they could have done after ripping us off! Never again!!!

We went to Kingsand and Cawsand for a beach stroll and were in need of some sustenance. Moran's, further up the hill would have been my first choice, but it was sadly closed so we bit the bullet. We opted for a couple of the Cornish Pasties on sale, which looked alright, but were too heavy on the pastry, too light on the meat and seasoning. They were pretty flat, so we should have guessed! We sat down inside the shop to eat and watched the shop assistant dip into the chest freezer to replace the pasties. It was pretty lacklustre. Maybe I'm being a bit harsh as it seems to be primarily a shop, but nevertheless, there are other better places to get a bite to eat and maybe this place is better during the summer months.

I found the Shop In The Square an enjoyable place and strongly disagree with the other reviews since that area is not a fishing villiage. I loved the ice creams and thought they were simply the BEST ! I believe that it was a resoanable price as well. I cannot wait to come back and vist next year.

At the risk of sounding like ‘Little Britain’ this is the only shop in the village square. And just like Matt Lucas’ famous character it’s got an attitude about it. Our first experience was to drop in at 18:00 on our first night for a bite to eat. I asked for a Cornish Pasty and was told they had none. Really, I said, its only six o’clock’. The response was stunning, “We’ve sold out, you should have come in earlier”. Now given that this was our first night in the village I’m not sure exactly how she expected me to know this, so with great presence of mind I asked her what time she was planning on selling out tomorrow so that I could be sure to call in just before to get my pasty. She was not amused at my facetiousness. So we decided to go for the fish and chips instead. Now I confess that with hindsight my expectations were unrealistic. Being in a Cornish fishing village and in sight of the sea I expected freshly landed fish, and chips that were golden and brown. What we go was oven chips (I kid you not) and ‘pop tart’ fish, you know the sort that is perfectly triangular with batter like a McDonald’s apple pie. I suppose I should have been alerted when the two staff serving looked at each other and smiled just ever so slightly when we ordered. You could almost hear them telepathically say to each other “SUCKERS!”. So here’s a tip, if you want take away fish and chips go to the pubs, particularly the Cross Keys Inn which is 30 yards away. They do take aways at much the same price which are far superior. The rest of the stuff they do is fine, but then again it’s hard to mess up serving an ice cream cornet or selling a post card!

I have just spent a week in Cawsand and used this shop on a daily basis for lunchtime food and cups of tea. I certainly didnt experience any of the problems reported here by others. The shop is small and very busy and so after ordering your food you have to wait outside to allow others to order theirs. The food is very fairly priced and of a more than reasonable standard. The ice creams are the best in the area and simply delicious. I will be going to the Shop in the Square when I return to Cawsand later this year, I think it's wonderful and so do my family.

Used the takeaway today. Frozen food, some things not available, small portions. Unfriendly staff that asked us to wait outside in the cold, because we have (well behaved) children. My daughter picked up a dog toy to ask if we could buy it and was told to "put it down" Our food was ready very shortly after we went back in after a long chilly wait!

I came down from London for the weekend with a couple of friends and found this delightful shop by mistake whilst looking for a news agents. We decided to stop for chips and ice cream and the food was absolutely delectable and I believe the ice cream was authentic Cornish dairy ice cream and I enjoyed a healthy (or not so!) dolloping of clotted cream and it was delicious! The chips were suited to the establishment and the shop is aesthetically decorated. I found the staff to be polite and welcoming and I'm very pleased with this happy accident discovery.

We bought fish and chips from this place. The man working there was grumpy from the outset. Asked a couple of questions about what was on offer and he could not bring himself to be polite. The fish and chips were the worst I have ever had. The Fish is pre-battered frozen and tasteless. The chips certainly don't seem in any way home made though I have no doubts they heated them up somehow. We went back and complained and got lots of excuses about why a fish and chip shop 100yds from the sea cannot get hold of fresh fish or be bothered to make better chips. Disgraceful!

We popped into the shop to buy ice creams for the grandchidren. The assistant was very helpful as the kids all picked different ice creams.Only downside was the cost £8 for 4 ice creams seems a bit excessive, but they did enjoy them.

Occasionally, thankfully not very often you come across an establishment that is there to serve the public where the staff would rather be doing anything but serving the public. Unfortunately this shop was one of those. We thought they would be glad of our custom on a dreary October sunday afternoon but sadly our experience left us feeling very unwelcome. It's advertised as a take away but they supply table and chairs indoors for customers to eat at, as it was a cold day we took advantage of this. To be told to clear our own table when we'd finished eating whilst being looked on by 4 idle assistants behind the counter was just plain rude, it wasn't a polite request it was quite menacing. Such a shame as the pasties were delicious, come on ladies it doesn't hurt to crack a smile and it doesn't cost anything to say thank you, you might even find yourselves enjoying your work!!

Me and my husband stayed here last night and what a wonderful hotel, beautiful room brilliant staff and gorgeous food couldn’t fault them. The cost of the room was real good value for money and the food was also very good value for money. Will definitely be staying again thank you for a lovely stay.

I have been to The Oxford many times and it never disappoints. The landlady is very nice and friendly and so are the regulars. Every time I've gone in here I've had a laugh. Everyone seems to talk to each other, even if they don't really know you, which I like. It is decorated nice and toilets are always clean. They have a fire inside which is very cosy in winter. Overall, lovely, warm and friendly pub.

Absolutely appalling. Ordered two standard cooked dinner, not small dinner's. We were served 3 tiny potatoes. To pay £9.95 for a dinner that small is a rip off. Barley any gravy. The women who served us was mid 50s. Didn't look, ask what veg nothing. Just served the smallest plate of dinner. I was actually embarrassed, it was the size of a starter on a sit down meal. She doesn't own the cafe so why serve the portion so small. Do not order the cooked dinner. Shouldn't be allowed to serve a dinner that size. Two women behind ordered the small dinner and had the same amount as us. Never will return. Should refund.
