Shogun Ramen in Brighton and Hove

This little ramen eatery is by far my most favourite. Doesn’t have huge cafe like sitting rather a traditional sitting how you find in South East Asia. Ramen and Katsu curry were heaven to dive in. Enough for a 2 to 4 member family, couple and group of 4-5. Strolling in Brighton after long beach day a bowl of ramen can fix your day for sure. Price wise it’s expensive - I have seen many take away rather dine in. But I enjoy small eateries so I rather enjoy sitting and eating there.

Fake japanese ramen. It's more like chinese ramen and that is not tonkatsu broth, something like tantanmen broth but still too blend. First time I see tonkatsu ramen is not white in colour, and the ramen is way too soft. The texture doesn't taste like Japanese ramen at all.

Delicious food - I had the Tonkotsu, but was slightly put off by the 3 star hygiene rating.

We visited here because we love Japanese food and hole in the wall style restaurants. Instead of a chill little place with a nice atmosphere (what we hoped it would be), it turned out to be closer to a funeral service. The fella who served us had zero charisma. None. He was rude, spoke unclearly and if you don't hear him first time, then you're in for it. He brought our food over and basically threw it down. It was like a Japanese version of Karen's diner but without the fun yet attentive staff. On the plus side the food was okay and you get quite a decent amount for the money. Overrall - If you want to go somewhere where you can simulate what it must be like to ask for food in a prison canteen, then you might enjoy it here. Otherwise for Japanese food, I'd highly suggest going to Tonkotsu on 20 New Road close to here - amazing place. Gave 2 stars on the service rather than 1 because the younger fella who worked there was muuuch more pleasant and actually greeted us as we walked in.

Just so good . Chilled atmosphere , the best ramen and especially good for eating alone. Great value too- £16 for ramen and a beer.

Please read me, and don’t even try!!! Apart from the restaurant's name, this restaurant has nothing to do with Japanese food. The “ramen“ was terrible! The soup was really bland, and the noodles were too soft. Even most Chinese noodle restaurants are much better than this FAKE Japanese ramen restaurant. It was a total disaster!!!

The ramen is bad. The broth is tasteless. Truly tasteless. It’s not bad. So that’s why it’s not one star. But I would not order again and would not recommend.

Average ramen and average food. Nothing really to hate besides the broth being a bit bland. I will say I got a lot of pork in my ramen though which I appreciated. Not much else to say. Just really average. I’d probably choose somewhere else next time.

I ordered the Tantanmen ramen. It came out very quickly, the minced pork was still cold. They basically add a bunch or pre-prepared ingredients to the broth and serve it is as. The broth itself was very bland. When I paid I cheerily said goodbye and was ignored by the whole staff, despite being the only customer there.

Really tasty deep flavored broth with spicy chicken mince. Wasn't too keen on the sweet corn or wilted spinach but was pretty nice all together. The staff are laid back and friendly. Food came out super quick as well.

I’m so glad I’m not the only one that though that (someone just reviewed saying it’s a fake Japanese ramen store) and. I. Agree. 100% Only the name is Japanese. I’m a Hong Konger myself, so we eat a large variety of Asian food and we know what is legit and what isn’t. The people running the restaurant sound like their from Mainland China. And whilst I don’t think you necessarily have to be Japanese to open a Japanese resto, you need to do it justice. The soup was very bland, I’m not sure if they cooked it long enough with the right ingredients. And the only thing that gave flavour was the 七味粉 powder you can sprinkle yourself. Noodles were soggy. For the brits here, please know this is NOT what Japanese ramen tastes like 😮‍💨

Such a yummy veggie ramen! ☺️ I ordered the veggie miso ramen and it was so flavorful and tasty. I also tried some of the broth of the spicy chicken tantanem ramen and it was incredible. The spicy steamed chicken gyozas were so delicate and came it a really yummy crunch onion oil. We ordered spicy but nothing really was. That would be the only improvement i could say. Will be coming back!

Its a typical restaurant which is hidden in the streets of Brighton. The restaurant is quite small but the restaurant is design for quick grab and eat. It is excellent for having lunch or quick bowl of ramen. The services is really quick and friendly. The food is cooked infornt of you if you stay at counter or there is sitting area below the restaurant which can fit about 3-4 groups. The flavour is not quite there yet as traditional Japanese food but I did enjoyed the food and time.

Feels like the quality has declined significantly. Basement level smells pervasively damp and the whole place has a generally grimy vibe. Noodles were over cooked and the egg was not a real marinated one

The broth was very bland and I used soy sauce to add a bit of flavour. The char sui was also quite dry despite sitting in the soup. The only thing that was good about this place is the price to be honest (a decent size bowl for the price)

The ramen was not good. The teriyaki donburi was so basic. I will not come back there again. Goemon is 100 times better.

Such good Ramen! Literally the best I’ve tasted anywhere. Service was a little lacking, staff seemed to not be too interested. That is apart from the older gentleman that was cooking the night we were there. You could taste how much he cared. Would have been five stars but the front of house staff let it down.

Really watery broth, after 2 sips I asked if I could change the dish to something else as it wasnt pleasant, they refused to do that or a refund or anything else to make it up for me.

Run by the Chinese. They use cheap egg noodles and the broth is tasteless. The egg is simple boiled one, it’s no where near the Japanese style. It’s overpriced for fake ramens.. Best to avoid…

Small Restaurant with a nice interior. Food is very very delicious. We liked it very much. The service was very fast and friendly. The food looked very goog and was very good and soooooooooooooooo YUMMY and tasty.

The worst Ramen i have ever had. The noodles were like from a packet of 2 minute noodles and were stuck together. The liguid was very watered down and not tasty at all and the chicken seemed like it was from the microwave. Avoid.

Just had lunch there and the ramen is not authentic at all. My friend ordered the char siu ramen while I ordered the tantanmen. Char siu ramen was very bland, while the tantanmen had flavour but it was weak compared to authentic ramen. The shop had run out of ramen noodles at 12pm when they just opened. The waiter asked if we wanted udon noodles instead. From our understanding, it was a free change but in actual fact we had to pay an additional £1.50 for it (only realised when we settled the bill at the end of the meal). The eggs were hard boiled and not pickled in soya sauce. The ramens were garnished with fried shallots, which is a first for me on a ramen. The customer service at the shop was lacking. We were not greeted as we entered the shop and it showed an overall lack of enthusiasm to serve customers. Only positive was that the pork and chicken katsu curry rice that my friends ordered were delicious.

Environmentally friendly pub with an interesting menu and serving organic booze. There is an upstairs room which can be hired for functions or parties. A pity that the organic ingredients are sometimes cremated and served with cool chips. The pub is worth a visit if you are not looking for a foodie experience, and don't expect speedy service. OK for vegans.

Amazing place, the design and layout of the bar is great and the service is Fantastic! Always worth a visit if you are in Brighton, Paul and the team will make you feel welcome! Being able to select your the music from your phone is brilliant!

Saw a sign saying £5 cocktails all night and thought we would check it out. Love the feel and look of the place. Cocktails were great too! Had a nice evening with friends and have mentioned it to a few others too! The bar staff mentioned they were installing plug sockets for phone chargers and they have lockers in there too!

Ramen was weak in taste, noodles way too soft and eggs were cold, hard boiled, and unseasoned Gyoza was just okay Inside was cold and eerily quiet Go to goemon or tonkotsu in Brighton instead, in fact Wagamamas has better ramen than this

Gyoza waren super, die Chashu BBQ Pork Ramen waren eher sehr leicht im Geschmack (Gewürze fehlen). Service sehr Gut

The name of the restaurant is Japanese, but ramen and Donburi (rice meal) they are serving is not Japanese food. Tonkotsu ramen's soup was really thin taste. Lack of spice and Dashi. Noodle was really sticky and it was disaster! 店名は日本語ですが、ラーメンと丼物は全く日本食（日本の味）ではありません。とんこつラーメンのスープはとても薄く、スパイスや出汁が全く効いてません。麺はネチョネチョで最悪でした。

This really is a no thrills place. Very basic but does what it says on the tin.small, not much decor but the food is reasonable and not overly pricey. Good if you want a quick bite to fill the gap. Staff are friendly if not overly skilled with customer service. Like I say, it does what it says on the tin and allowed for a quick bite, in and out.

The broth was getting worse and the service was RUDE. Nothing fresh. If they give you a smelly face just for tips!

Terrible ramen - very bad broth, overcooked instant noodles and cold hard-boiled eggs are added rather than seasoned eggs. Very low quality meat + ingredients in general. Very disappointing.

The food was absolutely delicious - so flavourful and very generous portion! Also arrived hot and fresh within 10 minutes of ordering. The owner was so kind and friendly - he even catered to my vegetarian companion by giving her vegetarian gyoza to sample 😊 he also pre calculated our bill and wrote it down so we didn't have to calculate it ourselves ❤ very thoughtful! The venue is also very nice with typical wooden bar and stoors but there is also a seat in area in the lower floor. I will definitely be coming back for reasonable prices, delicious umami and amazing persinal service! Thank you Shogun Ramen!

This is my trusted ramen place, it has good ramen at a good price, the service is very fast and the food is delicious, since I discovered it with my family I always come here to eat whenever I go to Brighton.

food was okay but WORST customer service i've experienced in a while. the lady at the counter came to take our order and already rolled her eyes at us after i said we needed a few minutes longer. ordered tantan ramen for me & chashu ramen for my partner, who ended up receiving the wrong dish (rice bowl instead of ramen). came up to her to ask about it again but she insisted in a very unfriendly manner that she had repeated my order for me before i paid, which she had but in a very quiet/mumbly tone so of course i wouldn't have been able to understand her properly. rude from beginning to end which i gave her absolutely no reason for. you're better off spending your money somewhere else, they clearly don't want customers.

Tldr; Tasty ramen but mediocre service and odd aesthetics bring the overall quality down. Food: items ordered - spicy chicken gyoza, chicken thigh tonkotsu ramen The gyoza was nice though could do with being a bit hotter. The chilli sauce had zero spice and don't think they should be calling it spicy. The ramen was tasty with a great tonkotsu broth. Included is a reasonable amount of ramen noodles, a thickly sliced chicken thigh, half an egg (would prefer it not as hard boiled , but not a major factor), some green veg and a fish cake slice. Vegetarian options wise, very few. Not particularly vegetarian friendly, only one rice dish available and one ramen dish available. The vegetarian ramen dish also comes with tofu which isn't listed. Service: Ordering was a bit of mystery. Apparently if you want spicy chicken thigh, you opt for the spicy miso ramen and if you want the non-spicy version you have the tonkotsu broth. Which is odd as they're two completely different broths. Seemingly you can't have the tonkotsu broth with chilli and vice versa if you want the chicken thigh. The staff were quite intimidating and became quite short with us for asking questions about the menu or bill. Aesthetics and the menu: The menu really needs updating and replacing. They've crossed out one the sides maked it as sold out but also listed chicken wings with a price. When I asked if the wings were available, apparently they're sold out. When I last visited in December, they were apparently sold out then too. Either I'm just really unlucky or the wings are perpetually sold out. There's also a number of other edits they've made which just makes the menu look tacky. Some questionable grammar too such as ' Spicy fried minced "pork" ' like why is the pork in quotation marks , does that mean it's not actually pork? The basement with the main tables smelled of damp/mould and the tables have a weird pattern that's indented which makes the surface not flat and can be a nuisance to place your bowls on them.

I love Ramen and came here expecting a real authentic experience. Well it was certainly an experience. The place was super busy and orders backed up hard . The chef was struggling yet still pushed out orders impressively. I ordered the Tonkotsu Ramen 🍜. It was a good size and really nice toppings, egg and pork. However the ramen noodles were super soft and ruined the overall meal. If they made the noodles firm it would have been great. I might pop back for their non ramen meals to test. The prices was reasonable about a tenner for the ramen, four pounds for a beer.

Soup is not good taste very bland. Not as good as what the review says. Generally not that great would not eat again. Only thing good was the cha Siu on the ramen.

Food at this place is always exeptional. Some girls broke us out of a house dinner that we were having and we walked for 4 miles to get to this place at around 8pm and had very good noodles. then we walked back into the school as if nothing happened and they never noticed. However the second time we came here disaster struck. A girl stole a different friends keys and he beat her up leading to widespread controversy. All and all the ramen here has always been amazing, although i would reccommend getting 1 ramen to share between 2 people.

I love going on dates here to get the BBQ pork ramen , it was made so well and it tastes authentic and there is no horrible chemical taste, like some ramen do. It's on the pricer side which can be fixed but also it's worth it. The inside is cosy and it's nice going here on a rainy cold day and having a bowl of ramen to warm you up

Definitely not the best ramen I’ve had but that’s probably reflected in the price. The egg is boiled not marinated, the noodles are very soft and taste like regular packet noodles and I’m not sure about the freshness of the ingredients but it’s OK if you want a quick cheap filling meal. The entire restaurant could also really do with a deep clean and some soap and hand towels in the toilet.

Absolutely disgusting. Ordered on 24/04/2022 at 1pm in store. The ramen was soggy and tasteless. Threw in he bin as I felt like it would make me ill if I continued eating it. Shop was completely empty at lunchtime which was a red flag.

Ramen was good and very tasty. The Chicken teriyaki was a bit uninspired. Two of our starters we ordered didn't come but we also did not get charged for them. Overall a good food experience.

Not great, not terrible 😁 Let’s say I have had much better tonkotsu ramen the here. It’s the average. Bamboo tastes weird, egg wasn’t pickled in soy sauce. On the other hand, the meat (bbq pork) was so delicious 👌

Comparatively to other ramen places in Brighton Shogun was a little bit of a let down. The meal wasn't awful but certain elements of my meal just felt... Rushed and tasteless. Not a bad place if there is nowhere else to go. But it's recommend else where.

Had previously had takeaway from Shogun and wasn't impressed, but decided to try it in person as Goemon was closed. The ramen broth for both the tantanmen and vegetable miso was so bland! The staff also came across as curt and disinterested.

Very good food. Only downside is that they close the downstairs seating area early in the evening resulting to be a bit cramped.

From Japanese perspective, ramen’s taste is just acceptable, but better than chain restaurants such as Wagamama or Its. We had both Miso and Tonkotsu ramen. Noodle is too soft. Regarding service, staffs are not friendly at all. Don’t respond to customers. They don’t say welcome or bey at all.

Very disappointed with their ramen. This was not Authentic Japanese Tonkotsu ramen and it was a Chinese version; the noodle was very soft and the soup was weak in flavour and lukewarm. Will not go back there again.

Not at all friendly service. No Greetings, did not even give us the menu and expected us to order?? I even wrote down our order because she didnt come back and get our order. No thank you, nothing at all. I wonder why we stayed, maybe we just want to consider that she might be having a bad day. But I dont think you can run a food business like that. We asked for a service water aside from the drinks that we order but nothing came, not even a word about it. In my stay in the UK, this is by far the most horrible experience.

Had the most rude experience TWICE here. We came to lunch once as we had been in the past and really liked it, we opened the door and the lady started shouting at us and closed the door in our faces. Then my partner opened again to understand what happened and she said very aggresive that she was busy and they had no spaces. So we left it there. Then this week, (not remembering the bad past experience) we decided to have lunch there. We opened the door, the lady was eating standing and as we opened the door, she turns and gives us the most horrible look and turns back to her food and pfff at us. I am in shock as never experienced nothing like that in a restaurant so i say tonher 'don't worry we are leaving' and she comes to me with not a single word coming from her i tell her how rude she has been that day and in the past too. Im an disgusted with this restaurant. Don't bother going there as you won't be welcomed at all.
