Murasaki in Brighton and Hove

So glad this place is still going strong. Somehow it’s always busy and booked out but they can nearly always fit us in. The drinks are great (try the Japanese grapefruit cocktail) and the food is good too.

First visit here. I had chicken Katsu w/egg on soba and a side of tempura asparagus. The chicken was tender with a crisp coating: the noodles/curry was delicious. Great 'comfort' dish. The tempura was also superb. Fresh, light and tasty. The service was great and the atmosphere nice and relaxed. I would recommend to others and would look forward to eating here again. 9/10. (I never give full marks :) )

Best Japanese food I’ve had in a long time (maybe ever!). Friendly staff, cute spot. 100% worth a visit. Get the prawn gyoza.

We popped in on a Saturday Lunchtime to nice quiet atmosphere with chilled jazz music playing in the background, perfect for chatting. Friendly service and a concise menu with a decent selection of dishes, either in a tapas style or single main courses. We had two main courses, both of which were excellent. Good, large portion sizes with tasty fresh ingredients. The BBQ sauce in mine was possible a touch too spicy for my palette but still enjoyable. A selection of vegetarian options are available although unfortunately, the 3 main noodle dishes are not as they use a fish sauce base.

Tuesday evening and the restaurant was almost full with one guy serving all the tables. Despite being busy he was incredibly efficient and friendly. The food was excellent - freshly cooked and well prepared with a good range of options. We chose two starters to share followed by two mains. All were really good quality. Can't wait to come back to try some of the other dishes.

Smaller space and welcoming. Quick and friendly service. Food was really good! I got the eel with rice, the katsu rice also the takoyaki! Definitely a place to try! Although in my opinion the eel with rice was the best one out of the 3 but they were still really good :)

Great food at a really good price point. We had a number of items off the menu and each one was delicious. The waitress was very accommodating and helped with some menu recommendations. The restaurant has a nice relaxed vibe with a really cool looking bar which we will be sure to try next time. The food was such good value that we ordered a few extra dishes, everything was worth it.

Wow - can’t recommend this place enough. Absolutely delicious food, warm friendly atmosphere, great service. All of the food was fantastic - we shared several dishes including the tuna katsu and the octopus takoyaki which were outstanding. We treated ourselves and shared the two desserts - green matcha ice cream and tempura ice cream. Both amazing. If you are looking for Japanese food in brighton definitely give this place a visit. If you’re not from Brighton, it’s only a 10 minute walk from the train station - so venture outwards and give this place a try.

Lovely staff. Amazing gyoza. Off the scale katsu curry. This is now my favourite spot in the neighbourhood. What a shame they’re not open on a Sunday, this would be the perfect place for lunch after a big night out.

Quaint family run restaurant with good selection. Unagi don (teriyaki eel rice bowl) was generous in portion and full of flavour. Yellowfin tuna nigiri (1pc) was satisfying albeit a little larger than I’m used to. Quite delicious. Draft Asahi beer is recommended for that izakaya experience. They have other examples of nice Japanese beer too. Friendly staff and good quality off peak. Would be interested in visiting again to try more on the specials board. Feel that you need to book at peak times , (small restaurant and quite popular.)

Booked a table for 2pm in advance as there was 6 of us. Table was ready on arrival, I'm glad we booked as the place was busy with only the reserved tables being free, The staff were really helpful and made you feel welcome We all ordered roasts I had the lamb shank which was so succulent and tasty, all the trimmings were there inc all different types of veg, the portions were also a really good size. The only thing I would say is on a Sunday get there early as they start to run out of certain roasts. The wine was a bit pricey but really rather nice and the food was v reasonably priced.

Best Japanese authentic restaurant in West Sussex .

We have Wakame Udon (with a poached egg) and katsu curry. Both were absolutely delicious! They do a small bottle of prosecco for a reasonable price, and the beer is fresh if a little pricey. It's a shame they didn't have a large size Sapporo but overall good selection. Service was prompt and polite, so nothing really wrong about Murasaki!

Good lunch and friendly service

We loved coming to this family run restaurant. The food felt authentic and reasonably priced. We typically go for sushi, but this time we opted for hot dishes (soup 🍵 + katsu curry 🥘) We'd love to go back and try the sushi next time though! 🍣

Haven't been for a while and the menu has more options. Food as always divine. Good value. Service excellent. Friendly, helpful . They have been advertising for staff for some time and the two servers do an excellent job - but another member of staff would really help them.

Very tasty starters, mains and desserts... Very friendly staff.

Discovered this place during a wonder around Seven Dials and it looked very cosy and delicious. We ordered numerous dishes including the Takoyaki and Sukiyaki Don. The dishes were incredibly appealing visually, but a little overpriced. The portion sizes were very generous but flavour wise, a little basic. The beef meat in the Sukiyaki Don was very tough and not as tender as you’d expect. The seaweed around the spicy tuna rolls were chewy, which makes me think that they were not fresh. In regards to the cleanliness of the restaurant, it was up to standard. Minor sticky tables but all in all, pretty clean. The atmosphere was very homey and welcoming. The staff were friendly and attentive.

I had the delicious (and substantial) okonomiyaki plus some mackerel sashimi and plum wine. The food was really tasty. I would highly recommend this restaurant.

Pre-booked dinner here when all the well known restaurants in Brighton were unavailable. What a great decision that turned out to be. Friendly staff with the right level of attentiveness and reassuringly aware of the menu with my allergy. Lots of space in a relaxed setting and trendy neighbourhood. The food was incredible, especially the salmon hosomaki, prawn tempura, pumpkin korokke and tempura ice cream which was to die for. Will 100% be returning when next in Brighton.

Great Japanese food, consistently delicious no matter what you order. In the winter I had their ramen and it was was one of the best ramens I've had in Brighton so far, can'twait ril it comes back as a special. Their Katsu curry is second to none and I go back to it time and time again. The service is always friendly and efficient, the staff really know what they are doing. Make sure you book in advance, there is a reason they are consistently booked out, it's definitely worth it! My fave place to go in 7 dials. ❤

Heard many great things about this restaurant and it certainly didn’t disappoint. Took the family here for a birthday celebration and had a very enjoyable evening. Chilled atmosphere, great staff and the food was excellent. Especially liked the spicy squid tempura washed down with a glass of Sake. Can’t wait to visit again. Thank you.

For years this was one of our favourite restaurants. Not exactly inexpensive but definitely worth every penny! Interesting choices, excellent quality and service. However, in our first visit after a long break due to the lockdowns, we found the menu limited and uninspiring (especially sushi and sashimi offering) and the portions smaller than before. The quality of the food was OK and the service fine but overall we agreed that Murasaki is not the place it used to be. Not sure what the pandemic has to do with the menu changes, which is what we were told by staff. In short, it’s OK but no longer outstanding.

Cold soba noods. That is all. 🙌

I wanted to treat my 7yr old after picking him up from summer school by taking him out for his favourite cuisine and we even waited for an hour nearby for the restaurant to open. Unfortunately I had noticed that I had forgotten to take my wallet out with me, so while waiting I checked on the restaurants website to see if the restaurant accepted Apple Pay and to my utter delight and my sons sheer joy the restaurants website was displaying that it accepts Apple Pay as a form of payment. We turned up to the restaurant a few minutes early, very hungry and excited and the door to the entrance of the restaurant was open so I asked if we could come in and wait patiently and I was told that we can not come in yet as the restaurant opens at 6.30pm and even tho I had my 7yr son with me the person in the restaurant failed to acknowledge that. So after being left to wait at the entrance we was finally allowed to enter the restaurant and sit down. I thought I would double check to see if it was ok to pay using the Apple Pay function before ordering off the menu. The person inside the restaurant then rudely said that Apple Pay is not accepted and decided to challenge my understanding of what I had read on the restaurants website. Only after me looking up the website again on my device to show the person what forms of accepted payment was being displayed on their website and it was then that the person (rather confusingly) believed what I had seen. So the overall experience was really disappointing as we had waited an hour for the restaurant to open and then did not get to eat as well as no apology or one tiny bit of remorse given for the website error.

Untrained waiting staff abandoned to do the best they can, which was not good at all. The food was good, when it came but several items missed from the order. We were told it was now too late to do anything about it. Staff browing smart phones next to us while our table was half cleared.

We ordered the bamboo set which was a great idea allowing us to sample small portions of the most popular dishes, from Edamame beans, gyoza, salad and a small portion of katsu curry. We also ordered an extra portion of Katsu prawns. The food was tasty and good value for money. Food arrived fast which is good for a lunch time and the staff were helpful and efficient. The only slight negative was the cocktail I ordered was rather weak it didn’t have enough plum sake or vodka for me & too much soda. You sit on stools rather than chairs & It’s not the sort of place you are too leisurely, more a quicker dining type of place . We liked the help yourself water. Would definitely go again

This local restaurant has been around for years, and the food more than justifies the longevity. Sadly the waiting staff need to refocus a bit and see their job as looking after the customers, especially when it's not too busy.

We walked past early lunchtime on Saturday (my sister lives close by) and it looked like they were preparing for service and we thought it looked cute. So, we went back for dinner, just two of us. We called ahead to book, but there were plenty of tables free when we arrived. I had the spicy seafood noodle soup (£9.95 including prawns, tofu, calamari, salmon and seaweed) ) and my husband had the sushi noodle set (£14.95 for a selection of 4 x tempura - veg & seafood - 4 x seafood nigiri sushi and a 1/2 size soba noodle soup). We both thought that the portion sizes were plenty (I even took 1/2 my soup home) and the flavours very fresh and authentic. We haven't been before (we live in London), so can't compare any 'before and now' experiences as detailed in other comments. One BIG problem is that the toilet was really dirty. It definitely does NOT get cleaned once a day. This REALLY put me off, but I had finished eating by then. If I can get over the idea of wondering how clean elsewhere in the restaurant (the kitchen!!) may or not be, I'll come back when visiting my sister*. *Actually, looking at the additional questions Tripadvisor asks after the main body of the review, my sister a coeliac (gluten free) vegetarian may struggle to find a varied choice. And loos are downstairs, so no good for wheelchair users.

This used to be my favourite ever restaurant which used to do these very good value bento boxes filled with all sorts - tempura veg, sushi nigiri, all sorts! Returned today to find they have taken them off the menu and the alternative offered is terrible. Cheap ingredients but highly overpriced. Sparkling water at £3.25!!!??? Someone is taking the xxx! Asked why they'd taken the only thing on the menu worth coming to the restaurant for off the menu - the waiter said they were bored. Well - what terrible business sense! You have a successful good value menu and your restaurant is full.. you give people flavoured water and battered veg scraps and no one comes in. No wonder the place was empty. I am so sorry to write this as I really used to love the place.

This place has been open for years and I can’t remember the last time I went there but it was many years ago but I always remembered the food being good . Had a urge to return. Midweek and early evening visit. The food was good , all freshly prepared. Tried some different dishes and there wasn’t anything I didn’t enjoy .

I guess this can be a reasonable option for residents in the area who want to have a couple of Kirins or Asahi with some acceptable Japanese food. The sushi platter is rather spartan, and the quality of both fish and rice is not very high. On the other hand, it's not positively bad either, and for 23 pounds I would say it is decent value for money. Some other smaller dishes were also OK. I found the service very likeable by the waitress and quite swift by the kitchen.

We have eaten here several times over several years - at the expense of not trying other Japanese restaurants - but the last couple of visits have been disappointing. Starters are still good but the mains seem to have lost their way.

Have used and recommended this place many times in the past. Whilst I still like the food I think it is unacceptable to close the kitchen over 1hour 30 minutes before the stated time because you are busy.

El sashimi y platos de sushi son excelentes, con la ventaja de dos japoneses en borrador lagers Amplia gama de Japonés "tapas" para elegir, y cajas de bento y platos de fideos a la hora del almuerzo. I rarely bother to do reviews on restaurants especially if they are doing well anyway but I have been looking for a good Japanese in East Sussex for a long time and had pretty much given up on it being possible, but this place is brilliant so I thought I'd pass that info on! Great service, attentive and friendly waitresses, amazing food (for mid-range price Japanese in the UK) reasonable prices and a really nice restaurant with a great atmosphere. It will be my monthly treat from now onwards. Me and my partner spent 80 pounds and ordered everything we wanted plus loads of saki so although not cheap we didn't hold back on anything we fancied.

Este es uno de mis favoritos restaurantes japoneses en el REINO UNIDO. La decoración es escasa, pero bastante agradable. Sin embargo, uno no va a ver Murasaki o Bethoveen) y pantallas de bonsais, pero por su auténtica lacadas, cocina Japonesa y buen precio sake y cervezas. Nunca he tenido una mala comida, ya sea en formato de bento box o en sus ollas de hierro fundido el sukiyaki. El servicio es rápido y eficiente, el ambiente relajado y el proyecto nunca llega a una cantidad impresionante.

Visited with seven friends last night, service was excellent, food full of flavours, I had mixed sashimi, vegie dumplings and crispy squid all very tasty. I really enjoyed the attention we recieved and very organized. I recommend this small restaurant.

A pleasant and moderately-priced, small and informal Japanese restaurant, serving tempura, teriyaki and noodles as well as sushi / sashimi. This is good standard Japanese food as you would find in everyday lunch canteens in Tokyo. It doesn’t pretend to be anything more refined.

Regularmente pop a almorzar aquí como nuestras oficinas están cerca. La comida es exquisita, estupendos sabores y me encanta tener la opción de elegir un estilo de tapas o un plato principal. El servicio es amigable y discreto y platos llega puntualmente. El restaurante es pequeño pero muy mucho la pena una visita.

Este es un lugar muy popular, por lo que es recomendable. es muy pequeño, pero el servicio es excepcional. Esta fue mi primera vez en un restaurante japonés y ¡definitivamente volveremos. Empezamos por conseguir una selección de tapas entrantes, vegetariano, pescado y carne. También tienen gluten selección. Para el principal tenía pollo en un breadcrumb con una ensalada, otras tenían besugo en salsa, pollo teriyaki y vegetariano curry todos estaban deliciosos.

People that know me, know that I'm very particular about my food, especially lunch, dinner, breakfast, snacks and elevenses. So instead of opting for my usual cardboard flavoured sandwich I came here with a colleague from work.I ordered a coke and the curry sauce udon noodle dish with beef. It was excellent. Great service and great food. The food was the kind of food to make you feel warm and fuzzy inside. I'd definitely come back here again, if I'm in the area.

We are locals from the area and have been trying different restaurants in Seven dials. We have had high expectations but were quite disappointed. First of all, our booked table for 6 was given to another party even though we were on time and confirmed our table on the phone before coming. A table was made for us but made things a bit awkward.The Mains from dinner menu are around £12 and does Not come with rice. £2.20 for a tiny bowl of steamed rice with nothing on it is a rip off. I got the Katsu curry and was very disappointed. There was hardly any sauce and £12 for just breaded chicken is definitely extortionate. We shared the 'fast tapas' and the desserts which were nice however.

Love coming here for lunch, slightly tucked away in 7 dials, which can be the only reason it's not higher up on Trip Advisor ratings. Great staff, great food and prices not extortionate.

None of the food was served together - we had to send back one plate twice because, although we had ordered it, it appeared at the wrong time. This meant that none of us were eating at the same time. The staff were inattentive and unhelpful and the service was slow.The food was good quality, but the whole experience was spoilt by the dreadful service. We would not recommend this restaurant to anyone, especially as the client seems to have little importance in comparison to the staff's wishes.

I do find their food a bit hit and miss, especially with the portion sizes. I have ordered the prawn katsu curry and have had a challenge to eat it all. However I have had the Prawn or Tofu Chilli Karaage don and spicy kimuchi don, to find the portion on rice to be variable. The Karaage don and Kimuchi don taste very similar and not very spicy. I would reccomend the Murasaki mixed bento with one of theses dishes as part of the bento box. You get more for your money this way!

A friend recommended this restaurant and I'm glad we went. It's also in a part of town (Seven Dials) that we probably wouldn't have seen on our two-day visit otherwise - there's some nice bars and some other nice looking restaurants there too.We weren't sure what or how much to order because there wasn't much explanation on the menu, but if you know your Japanese dishes or you're happy to dive in then it's fine. We ordered mixed sushi platter followed by a seafood ramen off the specials boards, it was all lovely. And the wine was nice too!

We have been to Murasaki for lunch twice in the past month as we are new to the area. On both occasions they did not bother clearing our table after we finished our main courses or offering any desserts or hot drinks. It was not a big deal the first time around but during our last visit I had to get up from the table to ask for the dessert menu as my 7 year old daughter really wanted some ice cream just to be told that the kitchen was closed!!!. We spent £75 on lunch for 2 adults and 1 child and were denied a scoop of ice cream for a child??!!. It would also be easier to get blood out of a stone than a smile from any of them.

An insult to Japanese food, too oily and too salty.I overheard the chef from the kitchen when we complained about oversalty food, he was extremly rude! The sauce and some ingredients tasted authentic (probably not made in the restaurant), apart from that it was an awful experience. Today I'm eating microwave food and I will enjoy it more.

Brilliant healthy food for all tastes. It's far more than sushi and tempura. I tend to go for one of the interesting hot mackerel main courses. Wait staff are very entertaining :)

Whether at the small restaurant at Seven Dials or the Take Away venue at the top of Norfolk Road Murasaki has consistently delivered outstanding Japanese food. Of particular note is the crispness of the Tempura batter and freshness of fish which suggests the batter is changed frequently and the highlight is always the Sashimi platters. Very reasonably priced and very underrated this is the best Japanese food in Brighton. And that is high praise as there are many very good quality Japanese food restaurants in the City

Great takeaway extremely tasty Japanese food. All The usual suspects here are covered Chicken Katsu always a winner , generous portions reasonably priced all freshly prepared . Always popular

Chicken kebab starter was not breast- slightly chewy/ rubbery bits of thigh? For main, chicken Banbu tempura was soaked in sauce which was too vinegary,so soggy not crispy.I had heard good things about the food so was very disappointed.My kids both had chicken katsu - they said it was not nearly as nice as Wagamama's katsu. The whole meal was ok but because I'd heard good things about this place, I had higher expectations. Nice people and excellent service, but doubt that we will go back. There are others that do same type of food better.

Poor meal here last night. I've been before over the years but this time it felt lazy and jaded. The tempura was cooked in overly old oil and was deeply uninspiring. The miso soup was casually throw together - I've not had a worse miso soup in a Japanese restaurant ever. And it's not as though it's dirt cheap either. They badly need to get their act together.
