The tonkotsu (pork broth) ramen with Pork belly was sublime. Absolutely loads of noodles, vegetables, broth, half and egg and a generous amount of pork belly. The broth seemed like it had been stewing for hours and was very flavourful. It was so filling that I couldn't finish it all, very good value for money.

Excellent ramen in a fun noodle bar. Friendly staff, quick service, generous portions and really delicious food. The only down side is that if you don't sit at the bar, you are either sat facing the wall or in a windowless basement, which is lacking in atmosphere. The noodles and broth are fantastic, a cut above. Order at the bar.

Date: 8th September 2024 Cost: £40 for two, inc a beer each You can’t go wrong with ramen, right? Surely? Shogun came pretty close. There was no ceremony to our visit, it was just a Sunday night, post-Betelgeuse Betelgeuse cinema trip, can’t be arsed to cook kind of visit. But ramen is ramen, and - being married - Sunday evening tea is the last bit of fun I have these days before the drudgery of a working week, so the mood was good as we entered, despite the emptiness of the place. We took our seats facing the intersection of two walls and listened to the staff bantering in Japanese. Pretty authentic, right! Wrong. There were two types of ramen to choose from - tonkotsu and spicy miso - the latter £3 more expensive and neither accompanied by the usual reassuring notices about bones having been simmered in the broth it was beautifully infusing with its deliciousness for half a day or more, so both of us went for the former. Each type had chicken, char siu (Chinese) and veggie options and came with egg, mushrooms, shallots, bamboo and fishcake. There were extras on the menu, but they were extras in the sense of more of the same, rather than different. Our kimchi (Korean) and wakame arrived at the same time as our ramen - and the more of these I write the more I realise how much I care about that kind of thing - and our gyoza didn’t arrive at all. I have a particular methodology with ramen, slurping most of the broth, trying to resist as much gubbins as possible, until I’m left with basically a portion of dryish noodles that I can mix with chilli oil to my heart’s delight. Invariably I take a spoonful and then add garlic, sesame seeds, vinegar and soy to taste - all of which conspicuously absent and conspicuously necessary here. It didn’t taste of loads, to be honest. I asked for the chilli oil and some garlic, only one of which arrived, and tried to spice up my soup, which then went down the wrong hole. After I’d recovered I went about my usual business, but what remained in my bowl after I’d dredged it was pretty Pot Noodly, and I was eating to satiate hunger rather than for pleasure. The portions were generous, and I still left with that incredibly satisfactory post-ramen fullness having drunk Mich’s leftovers (she has the opposite approach to me), but it was probably the worst one I’ve ever had.

Visually, I imagined a ramen restaurant like Shogun to be exactly the same. I've only seen it like that in films or documentaries. The other ramen restaurants we have been to looked different. So, so far, so good. Let's get to the ramen. The broth was very good and so was the meat. We had one with pork and one with chicken and a small wakame salad. The salad was good. The egg was also good. What wasn't so good and made us a little skeptical were the corn kernels and bamboo shoots. The sprouts were not good. Typical sprouts that are too hard and too fibrous. And the corn is out of place. Otherwise the scene in the restaurant was almost surreal. Us in a film or play. At least very interesting.

The staff are really kind and friendly. Unfortunately the food served here is nothing like Ramen– and this is coming from a Japanese person. We ordered Tonkotsu ramen, but the broth was the wrong colour (brown and clear) and had no flavour. The noodles also have no taste, like over-boiled pasta. Our egg was not flavoured either, just a white half-boiled egg. Very disappointed to have wasted 12 quid per person.

This little ramen eatery is by far my most favourite. Doesn’t have huge cafe like sitting rather a traditional sitting how you find in South East Asia. Ramen and Katsu curry were heaven to dive in. Enough for a 2 to 4 member family, couple and group of 4-5. Strolling in Brighton after long beach day a bowl of ramen can fix your day for sure. Price wise it’s expensive - I have seen many take away rather dine in. But I enjoy small eateries so I rather enjoy sitting and eating there.

We visited here because we love Japanese food and hole in the wall style restaurants. Instead of a chill little place with a nice atmosphere (what we hoped it would be), it turned out to be closer to a funeral service. The fella who served us had zero charisma. None. He was rude, spoke unclearly and if you don't hear him first time, then you're in for it. He brought our food over and basically threw it down. It was like a Japanese version of Karen's diner but without the fun yet attentive staff. On the plus side the food was okay and you get quite a decent amount for the money. Overrall - If you want to go somewhere where you can simulate what it must be like to ask for food in a prison canteen, then you might enjoy it here. Otherwise for Japanese food, I'd highly suggest going to Tonkotsu on 20 New Road close to here - amazing place. Gave 2 stars on the service rather than 1 because the younger fella who worked there was muuuch more pleasant and actually greeted us as we walked in.

I’m so glad I’m not the only one that though that (someone just reviewed saying it’s a fake Japanese ramen store) and. I. Agree. 100% Only the name is Japanese. I’m a Hong Konger myself, so we eat a large variety of Asian food and we know what is legit and what isn’t. The people running the restaurant sound like their from Mainland China. And whilst I don’t think you necessarily have to be Japanese to open a Japanese resto, you need to do it justice. The soup was very bland, I’m not sure if they cooked it long enough with the right ingredients. And the only thing that gave flavour was the 七味粉 powder you can sprinkle yourself. Noodles were soggy. For the brits here, please know this is NOT what Japanese ramen tastes like 😮💨

Just had lunch there and the ramen is not authentic at all. My friend ordered the char siu ramen while I ordered the tantanmen. Char siu ramen was very bland, while the tantanmen had flavour but it was weak compared to authentic ramen. The shop had run out of ramen noodles at 12pm when they just opened. The waiter asked if we wanted udon noodles instead. From our understanding, it was a free change but in actual fact we had to pay an additional £1.50 for it (only realised when we settled the bill at the end of the meal). The eggs were hard boiled and not pickled in soya sauce. The ramens were garnished with fried shallots, which is a first for me on a ramen. The customer service at the shop was lacking. We were not greeted as we entered the shop and it showed an overall lack of enthusiasm to serve customers. Only positive was that the pork and chicken katsu curry rice that my friends ordered were delicious.

Great food, shame about the staff and the ambience. A good lunch option if you're short of time. However, initial impressions on entering were poor. No acknowledgement from staff, who were far more interested in handing food bags to couriers for delivery. When I asked for a table for one, the chef told me to wait, and then he disappeared outside for a few minutes (the restaurant was empty at that time). The other lady behind the counter didn’t even look up. From this, I concluded that the staff aren’t Japanese (friendliest nation ever!), but that’s probably not important. Eventually, I was handed a menu. Choice is good, with ramen and udon options and stuff for vegetarians (not sure about vegans). Placing an order was easy enough, but I still had the impression that I was causing an inconvenience to staff by being there as a customer. Food came fairly quickly and, fortunately, was delicious. I ordered a pork broth with udon noodles. It’s served with little fish cakes, which are very fishy – you can ask them to leave those off. Small criticism – maybe a bit too much salt. Empty bowl a few minutes later. Price was reasonable (about £13 for the bowl). Didn’t order a drink, because £2 for a can of soft drink is extortionate. Other notes: the restaurant is small (maybe 12 seats on the ground floor, a few more downstairs), so you’ll probably have to wait for a table if you go at peak times. Key measure of any restaurant: the toilets seem clean. The restaurant was also chilly and would benefit immensely from some background music. The silence is deafening and the atmosphere sterile. I would try other ramen places nearby before going back here.

The food is tasty, but youthful and not very authentic. On the plus side, it's a spacious place with plenty of room and an interesting menu, but on the downside, they don't serve meals together, it's first come first served, so in practice each of the four of us ate separately.
