Ship & Royal in South Tyneside

Omg 2 stars is me bring generous. Bar stank of p**s like someone has obviously had a pee in the corner and the stairway to the toilet is disgusting- I had to hold my nose. Vile.

The food I ordered for myself and my little one, a sandwich and chips for us to share. It took over 45 minutes to come, and the place just needs a really good clean. It was quite scruffy, from the tables, to the sauce bottles, just all a bit minging. Home made chips were quite good, and the staff friendly. I've been for drinks in the past and it's good on an evening. 1st for food, an as I'd visited if he pubs from the same owner, I had high hopes. But unfortunately I might skip this one for a bit

Went for lunch today and had a great meal in a lovely atmosphere! Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area.

The "ship" has been a local pub since the sixties and on a trip up north I paid a nostalgic visit. Clean and tidy with decent beers but sadly neglected decor wise. Tuesday night very quiet but may be busy on other days. Never tried the food but the menu was standard pub grub

Stopped in for something to eat after shopping in South Shields. We had a chicken wrap and steak and onion baguette. The wrap came with sweet potato fries and salad. The fries were tasteless and undercooked. The wrap was smaller than a childs portion, being the smallest wrap we had ever seen. The baguette was stale and chewy. Both salads were limp and warm. Would not recommend the food. When we complained about the food we were offered a free drink or dessert but we decided not to accept the offer as we just wish to leave. The pub itself is nice but we could not have a proper conversation as football commentary was being blasted out of all of the speakers in the pub. A customer had to ask the manager to switch the speakers of in the dining area, which he did. The staff are pleasant enough and the pub has a good selection of reasonably priced drinks.

Been a few times now on separate occasions at different times, all I can say is the staff are pleasant and helpful and the food has been great, the dining area is comfortable and cosy. Plenty choice on the menu with good old pub classics and a selection of "buy 2 meals" at a set price. The food comes well presented and the chips are just the best, even came in their own frying pan👌🏻. Not many gripes at all, only ones I had were fighting my way in through the smoke at the door from the regulars but this is a central pub in South Shields which will always have the regular folk every day. The bar area is set back from the dining area so it's a great place to dine with the family, the kids menu is ok and very good portions for hungry kids. Will defo be back!

Met a few friends in the Ship and Royal for a few drinks on a Friday night, pub seemed quiet, typical pub decor, could do with brightening up and toilet access key was with a group of punters in the pub though sign advised toilet key behind bar.

While in town shopping with my partner , we were debating on a quick macdonalds lunch or a pub lunch, and was so pleased we decided on the latter!!! We ordered 2 meals from the special 2 for £8.50 range, I had fish and chips with mushy peas while my partner ordered the all day breakfast. What great value for money!!!! We were served our meals within 10 minutes by a very polite memeber of staff, the fish was fresh and tasty with a delicious light batter , perfectly home cooked chips and just the right amount of mushy peas served in a ramikin . My partners breakfast was perfectly cooked with high quality sausage and bacon and eggs served to perfection ! portion sizes were very generous also. Washed down with two pints of coors light , all for under £14 , we will definately be visiting again, top class :)

Called here today, ordered ham egg and chips, urgh!! Cold chips, 2 rock hard yolks on my sisters and my plate. When I brought it to the staffs attention she did offer to change my meal but other company had already ate their meal so I declined. I said it should never have left the kitchen to be told "well I didn't cook it" and waltzed off. Another member of staff was approached and we were told we would just have to hang around until they had time to sort us! Which they eventually did by returning our money. Shambles!!!

we were hungry and not knowing the district popped into the ship and royal .Not the smartest pub around but the price was right and we enjoyed our meal corned beef pie lovely basic food no fuss no bother served quickly the waitress was very friendly. would visit again and try something else on the menu for a change.

3 of us recently had lunch here whilst in South Shields town centre. Good selection o bar meals on menu. We had grilled chicken, steak & ale pie and egg & chips. The food was hot and very tasty. The reasonable price include a 2 for 1 deal. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We will definitely be back.

Went to Ship & Royal twice whilst in South Shields.Quite standard menu but excellent value.Very friendly staff and atmosphere Meals were served fairly quick and were very hot & real chips!!!! Will go again if in the area.

Stopped in at Ship and Royal for a last pint on our way back to the B&B after attending a Rugby World Cup match in Newcastle. We weren't looking for a dance club so glad we saw it. Very nice young lady at the bar, served our favorite UK beer...we were happy. When the manager came to take our glasses after last call, we said thank you very much...and as he walked away, he realized we didn't have the local accent. He turned back and said "Americans?" We nodded. "What are you doing here?" was the next sentence. Thus we got a chance to have a nice conversation about Seattle, Washington and South Shields. Sadly this was our only chance to visit the Ship and Royal but we absolutely will if we ever pass that way again. Great staff!

Fantastic Sunday Lunch for a great value price. A regular size was more than enough. Highly recommended for fast friendly service.

I have personally been visiting the ship and royal for the past few years on and off. Recent changes have only made the pub better for me and friends on terms of recent music and fantastic atmosphere. Although never having visited with family I would have to say this is one of the most family friendly places in South Shields. Cheap pints, great staff, clean pub, what more of a reason do you need to visit! Thoroughly recommended, 5*.

Good drinks at reasonable prices, what more can you ask for. Staff are friendly and quick to serve. Only thing missing is a pool table. Good place to watch the footy.

Myself and my two children visited here last week, I was unsure at first as I wasn't sure if it would be family friendly or a drinkers pub. Suitable for both I would say. Very good coffee and hot chocolate! Food was cheap and good quality. The waitress was cheerful and made a fuss of my kids. Very clean, central location. Happy mam!

First visit to the restaurant and i liked the lovey relaxed atmosphere. I was a served within minutes and food arrived not long after. Excellent food, tasty and fresh most importantly. The staff were pleasant and really couldn't complain about value for money! Great all rounder

My self and my partner wanted to find somewhere to watch the semi final of the darts. We had the best seats in the house. The young bar lad was amazing. He had some of the best customer service skills ever. He must have only been about 19 and he was great with us oldies. He smiled alot and had a laugh with us because we thought in comparison to Edinburgh the prices were excellent. Well done.

First time I've ate at this restaurant, no queue. I must say the food was fresh & delicious - cooked just right, i didn't wait long either, the service from the staff of Alex Kieron & Rachel was exceptional as they were all very friendly & service with a smile. As they say, you only pay for what you get. I will be visiting this restaurant in the very near future. Exceptional all round value, Thank you

brought my kids yesday for lunch cost 17 pound we had fish and chips and 2 burgeres with drinks was lush never had chips like it they were homemade wil be going back soon.

my partner and I had a few drinks in here. massive window to sit and watch the world go by. staff very friendly quick service. would spend time for a couple of drinks again in the future.

Decent pub, nice food at sensible price but every day there is a lot of people at the bar (not helped by locals clogging service up by drinking at the bar) and never enough staff to get served quickly, even on a week day lunchtime. Not going back.......loads of alternatives pubs where you have enough staff to look after you, but if owners just bothered to have another member of staff over lunchtimes they wouldn't lose custom by people walking out.

I went to the ship and royal with my friend, soon as we approached the bar we were greeted by very welcoming staff, we ordered food and went for the 2 for £9.50 offer and the portion size was spot on, tasted very good too! When we finished our meal the member of staff was straight over to take our empty plates away, she even offered us deserts, teas and coffees and trust me very few pubs in shields do that! I would definitely recommend.

I've visited here many times and only once has there been.an issue. Food is all home cooked and there's plenty of it. Chips are out of this world!!

Chose here to meet a group of friends as it's the most central place possible! Firstly I was pleasantly surprised by the cost of our round of drinks, and the service that came with them was very good.We sat in the quieter end of the pub and eventually decided to order food as meals around us looked good. All 4 of us had different meals and all 4 of us had the same comments, well presented, tasty and fresh, and LOVELY CHIPS! I will certainly be returning and highly recommend it. Nice pub great staff and food

Didn't enjoy the food here as the smell of stale beer not nice it didn't seem the cleanest of places either once I sat and looked around but it was the smell that put me off sorry .left my food

Stopped off for lunch when shopping and expected a microwaveable type meal. Was a lovely surprise to get freshly cooked food, nicely presented and tasted great. Excellent value for money too. Staff accommodating to requests to change meal/sides etc. Will definitely come again.

Friendly service with outstanding food, they catered for our requests which were slightly different to the menu and didn't disappoint. Will definitely be returning, relaxing and enjoyable, oh and prices are amazing for value.

On a lazy sunday afternoon, my husband & I deceided to try the ship & royal pub in south shields for a spot of sunday lunch.The pub has a nice friendly atsmosphere & there's a nice little dinning area with enough tables to cater for.The sunday lunches have 3 prices depending on whether you get a small, medium or large meal with prices at just under £5, £6 & £7. Our choice of meats on the day was either, pork, beef or turkey. We both opted for the beef, myself ordering a small portion while my husband opted for the medium.I have to say we were very impressed when the meals arrived. Everything on the plate was home-made from the roasties to the Yorkshires & mash. There was a 'heap' of very tasty beef along with an assortment of vegetables & some very nice gravy. The portions are a very generous size and very tasty.Along with the drinks we paid under £13 and it was well worth it. So if your out & about on a sunday afternoon in south shields then def give the ship & royal pub atry for a spot of lunch.

Superb home made pub grub at a great price. Ordered a platter starter which was more than enough for me, wife and 2 teenage lads.Mains came as soon as we finished the starter which was superb. The mains tasted fresh, were very filling and the chips that came on the plate were freshly cut, proper potatoes. The only struggle we had was actually eating everything. The price was very good for this hearty food, which was top nosh.If you are in South Shields definitely give the Ship and Royal a visit for a superb meal

when we arrived a football match was on tv and the place was quite busy. Despite this I was served very quickly by a pleasant member of staff. The meals we ordered arrived in very reasonable time, the portions were very good without being too large. The meals were very very tasty and we made the very pleasant staff aware of our contentment. We washed it down with a very reasonable Chilean red and we were well satisfied. We will definitely return to this pleasant venue.

Ate here at lunchtime, we had the 2 for £9, very good value. I had the gammon which was very tasty & cooked beautifully plus they serve real chips, mother had the all day breakfast, which the sausages were too much cooked for her, but that's her taste. She informed me that it was a good pot of tea & although the coffee machine was broken, as the lady who took my order told me, the "instant coffee" that she made me was very nice. Very pleasant staff, overall very nice lunch, well done Ship & Royal.

Me and my husband visited today for our lunch for the first time since October last year. From popping in for drinks every now and then since then we have noticed a change of staff. They are a lot more friendly and today was greated with a smile, we had drinks along with two lovely mixed grills that we got cheaper than expected after the mangeress (i assume from her attire) behind the bar mentioned a offer they had one today. We will be visiting more often for food and drinks after today a big improvement! One of the best meals in the town centre it's just a shame we were too full for puddings!

Looking at the reviews previous to this, i wasn't expecting too much, but we were going for a quick pint and a bite to eat - we were served straight away and the barman was kind enough to let us know we'd missed an offer of a free dessert which we gladly took! The food came and it was lush! Will Definately be going back when im back in South Shields!

went in for a meal but didnt end up eating there as service was so poor didnt want to spend my money , waited at bar to order food for about 10-15 mins got to front at bar then barmaid looked at me and decided to serve a man who had just came to bar with empty pint glass looked like she knew him but to me its first come first served wont be going back, the area for eating meals is a mess and not very clean

newly refurbished decor with choice of seating styles, ordered sunday lunch and it was ample could not have managed the XL portion which is also available, prices are very good and the staff are very friendly, will be eating here again :)

thats= what the ship and royal will always be pub grub.. although reasonable priced, I know by night it is one of the busiest bars in town, and thats what it is good at, being a bar.. The food was fit for a pub..

its ok nothing special, just a standard pub. Abit run down could do with some updating and quite expensive for food compared to the rest of the bars and pubs in town.

for a building which has been on the same site for a great number of years I feel that changes over the years have not done the best for the building, wood flooring, plain decor and average food menu, sometimes having to wait some time for what I feel is a very basic selection

we have never dined here but always pop in for the 2 for £6 cocktails which are lovely the staff are all friendly and there is loads of seating to getting a table is never a problem

Food is good a bit expensive though.
