Walking along the river from Arundel with 5 friends we needed a place to stop and recharge. It being a Sunday lunch time we were not hopeful. Round a bend we spied the Ship and Anchor and, more in hope that expectation went in. It was busy with people enjoying proper Sunday lunches. All we wanted was a sandwich and a pint. The staff couldn't have been more helpful. Made us feel genuinely welcome, found space for the 6 of us and didn't mind that we weren't having a full Sunday roast. They made sandwiches to order, (even for our awkward vegetarian couple). And the sandwiches were definitely amongst the top pub sandwiches I have ever encountered. Good quality, fresh food, more than ample proportions and well presented . The beer was first class (and I'm a bit picky) So all in all a gem of a find on a long walk out. Go in if your passing, you'll not be disappointed.

Let's not beat around the bush. This place was very low for a long time. But it's a beautiful spot, with a charming atmosphere. Now, under new management (it's complicated, but that will do.) honestly, we just had the best night out for YEARS. There's a freedom and engagement in the staff you don't find much any more. EVERYONE was having fun, you can tell the team are working very hard indeed to get the Ship and Anchor back to the magical place it used to be. Food was very nice - best stilton steak sauce ever, homemade onion rings and a knickerbocker glory 8 year old me thought I'd never taste again. Give it a go again, I promise you won't regret it.

Went to the Ship with a party of elderly people for lunch on one of our monthly trips out with the community minibus. We felt very special - personal treatment from lovely staff and great home-cooked pub food mostly bought locally. Very good atmosphere but not too noisy. They deserve to do well in this out-of-the-way ancient pub.

We stayed in the campsite for one night and went for a drink to experience the rudeness we had read about on other reviews......unfortunately we were welcomed with a wonderful group playing music in an informal jam session and very friendly new managers, we even stayed for a second drink! We would thoroughly recommend, whilst we didn't eat the menu looked good.

We tried to book a table by phone as we were camping on the attached site, but the latest one we were offered was 6:45 which was too early for us. Had a drink outside and while we were there a group of people were brusquely summoned to their table inside as "it was ready". My husband thought the beer was a bit weak.

Slightly irked by the rubbish review from 2017! So I thought we would give it a try. YES, Fabulous food, warm, snug and friendly. This is a calm, relaxing place, not somewhere to go if you are in a tearing hurry. We will be back, the pies are homemade and YUM.

We've just sat outside the Ship and Anchor pub in Ford for dinner and what a most pleasant experience it was. The weather is good (obviously) but so was the food, the service, the company and the location. Settled off the road and beside the river Arun, it's ideally situated for an evening out in the countryside. The landlady couldn't have been friendlier or more cheerful and her husband, the chef, makes an excellent fish pie! I highly recommend the cheesecake (prepared by the landlady I'm told) if you still have room after the generous quantity of mains.

We stayed in the adjoining Camp site and had 4 very pleasant nights there. The close proximity of the river gave us good walks for the dogs which were made very welcome at the pub when we visited on a couple of occasions. If the Pulled Pork with ham, apple and stilton pie is on the "specials" board I would thoroughly recommend it - it was certainly one of the best pies I have ever eaten (and I've eaten a few) and was served up with chips and five fresh vegetables. We returned the next day for Sunday lunch and the lovely landlady remembered I'd enjoyed the pie and told me they had one left. I had the pie again in preference to the roast offering, which did look good.

My friends and I own motorhomes/campervans and the 3 of us love and regularly use the campsite next to the pub, taking our 3 vans away for an easy weekend together, despite the fact that we only live a few miles away. One of the highlights is a delicious fish and chips takeaway (fresh, hot and crisp with home made tartare sauce...yum) from the pub on arriving on Friday evening, and a fabulous roast lunch in the pub before leaving on Sunday after a nice walk along the river that runs past the site. The welcome has always been warm (including our dogs), the service always good, the food always excellent (traditional home cooked food), and the atmosphere exactly as a British Country Pub should be, both in the comfy cosy pub and outside on the pub terrace. I would recommend this pub to anyone and in fact it is so popular that we always book fish and chips and Sunday lunch at the time we book the campsite because we have, on several occasions, found that they were fully booked. With regard to another comment about not taking cards, over recent weeks I have been refused custom in several places for daring to offer the legal coin of the realm, real money, which would not be taken - including my dentist!! Unfortunately technology breaks down, that isn't the pubs fault and for that reason I normally carry an "emergency" £50 note. Love this pub (and the campsite) x

So we called in here while out on a cycle ride in our local area and thought we’d give this pub a go again, despite a non too pleasant experience a few years ago. So we rock up, we are not welcomed in at all, and note that there is only one ale available and one lager too. Not the best start, but never mind we’ll persevere! Anyway after pouring my pint, the landlady saw that we were wanting to pay by contactless, as everyone does now. Oh no, pint swiftly removed as we had no card or cash on us. What a real horrible experience. So we’ll give this a swerve again for another few years . How the landlady can run a business being so unfriendly, lord only knows!

Lovely quaint good old fashioned pub on the banks of the river Arun. Small gate leads from the car park directly onto the riverside footpath, 3 mile walk in one direction to Arundel and the other direction you Littlehampton. We booked s table for a Sunday roast. The pub is very well run and observed the Covid restriction’s very well without losing its good service or charm.I opted for roast pork with all the trimmings and my wife had the lamb shank again with all the trimmings. Both meals were cooked lovely and very generous with the meat portions. Nothing overcooked just flavoursome good food. We’re both had sticky toffee pudding for dessert, my wife had ice cream and I had custard, again delicious. Two pints of Ringwood ale and a bottle of Australian Shiraz ( only do 1 litre bottles) what a shame .Service was friendly, polite and efficient. All in all would highly recommend and will be back. One word of warning though, it would be wise to book in advance.

This review has nothing to do with the pub, been there many times, ladies are fantastic and service is on point. Its about the woman who allegedly owns the land. Went there on Monday, used the riverbank to get to it. We used the same gate we've been using for about 6 months to enter the property and straight away we have been jumped on by this woman who claimed to be the land owner telling us we are trespassing and we need to get off. After explaining to her that we are here for the pub she kept being patronising and basically tangled up in what she said about us using the gates. Apparently it's ok to use them fornthe pub,but it's not ok to use them because its private. WTF.How are you supposed to get to the pub from the riverbank then? We decided to set off somewhere elsewhere, which was very difficult because of her yapping at us non stop that we are trespassing and we need to leave. So much for the hospitality. Lovely ladies behind the bar but we won't be coming back there because of that little Gimli guarding the "private" pub.

Yesterday 10 of us went to the ship and anchor. Its opening hours were shown as open but we got there at 4pm, and it was closed. We then went to leave via the pub car park onto the river bank but were stopped by a man who informed us it was a private gate only and we couldn't go out that way (the only way in and out of the pub onto the river bank path!?). So, being polite, we turned around to leave, using the only road that comes into the pub, and then, we then had some ranting very angry woman who was taking our photos and telling us we had to pay £5 each to leave! However.... went here yesterday with a walking group, whereupon we were harangued by a "lady" I assume to be the owner, telling us that we could not walk past her premises unless we bought a drink or meal. Not, I have to say, an experience I have had before. The food may or may not be good, but I prefer to be with nice people, and from this experience this would emphatically not be the case here. For this reason, I recommend avoiding this place - there are others nicer nearby.

We were staying on the campsite attached . The site is good, level, grassy and not crowded. The facilities are spotless, there was always cleaning being done, but in need of refurbishment. If the site had been full, or even half full, the number of showers would not cope ( 3 showers for men and 2 showers plus 1 bath for ladies). The fees are payable in cash only and I thought the 50p token for a hot shower was a bit penny pinching considering the price (£25 per night for campervan, 2 adults and electricity on grass) to be at the higher end of the range. It is however very convenient being near Ford Station with trains to Arundel, Brighton, Chichester etc...

We had a couple of meals whilst staying on the camp site, first lunchtime snack was an excellent ploughman' lunch, we then had an evening meal which was very good as was the friendly service, the campsite showers need updating for the price you pay per night, my only criticism of the venue

Breaking news a tunnel has been discovered at Ford Prison leading from The Ship & Anchor. Suspicions where confirmed at early morning roll call they had 27 over dressed in bermuda shorts and sandals. A bemused govenor said "But they only had to walk in the gate it seems they were lured by they can actually have visitors , play ball games and listen to music." We never had chance to do anything our friend turned up on the first night walked on the field and said im here are you coming to the pub for a drink. That is enough to get you asked to leave the site. Ps If you do stay watch out in the shower block in the morning she will probably be waiting to have a go at you about your snoring.

We love this pub for Sunday lunch. It's like going into the late 50s early 60s and the food matches. Good portions of honest, unpretentious food. Never, ever, found the land lady anything but courteous, friendly and cheerful.

Stumbled across the Ship & Anchor, whilst walking too and from Littlehampton to Arundel. I had passed the pub on my way to Arundel and decided to stop off for lunch on my way back. I’m so glad I did! I had a lovely Ploughman’s lunch for £9.50 and a couple of pints of cider. I sat in their garden, which was so peaceful, enjoying the sunshine and, of course, my ploughman’s lunch. The staff were happy to serve me more cider at my table, which was nice. They were very attentive and I have to say, I will definitely be returning again soon. The people on the table across from me were having the roast dinner. Well, it was Sunday after all, and it looked fabulous. Can thoroughly recommend this pub if you are down this way on a weekend.

Great steak and ale pie with chips and gravy but a bit over priced at £11.95, as was the cod and chips.

Great warm reception from the Scottish freeholders of this pub, prompt entertaining service and superb HOME MADE AND HOME COOKED food. There was no mention of a ploughmans lunch on the menu, but when my husband asked if one could be produced the immediate answer was 'absolutely no problem' - and it was a fantastic dish with home made pate, home cooked hams, cheeses pickles, etc. My fish was very fresh and beautifully cooked, and the deserts were the same - home made and top standard.

Going to a funeral reception is not the best time to review a pub, but I can say that the surroundings were gorgeous, peaceful and quiet. A bit out of the way, tucked down a long drive, close to a small harbour. The staff were friendly and polite and the funeral buffet was extensive bdn flavoursome.

We arrived and was greeted by friendly staff and a great pint, the Hen pie was very tasty and was accompanied by veg and a few chips, it was homemade and well presented. The shredded pork pie was packed with meat, and the puddings where good too, with a choice of custard, ice cream or cream. Staff where attentive.

The staff are always polite and very helpful in answering any questions. If they do not know the answer they will find out for you. We had mushroom and sweet pepper soup and boy was it delicious accompanied by crusty pieces of bread and butter. The Sunday roast are lovely and so tasty. They are worth the money. Today I had lamb roast dinner. The Yorkshire pudding is nice and fluffy with gravey in the middle. Lots of tender lamb slices with lovely roast potatoes, mint sauce and the vegetables come separately. The pub is always fully booked. They do other roast, chicken and pork. My fiancé enjoyed the roast pork. There was on the menu Vegetables in a marrow, cottage pie and a ploughman. The desserts: sticky toffee crumble, trifle and lime and lemon cheese cake. We did not have a dessert because we were so full, but we have on other occasions and they were lovely. Dogs are welcomed in the pub and they have a bowl of water outside for the dogs. Can't wait to go again.

Poor Customer Service Had a pot of tea today that was just awful, very weak and no taste. I don’t usually complain but decided to take it back. The assistant restaurant manager was at the checkout so I told him and asked for a pot with 2 teabags. He said he couldn’t do that as that costs too much. No apology too.So he agreed to a new pot half full with one bag! Is that customer service? Really? It was still awful, couldn’t drink it.

very slow service, ordered a 2 x meals with an Expected delivery of 14 minutes, after 30 mins, enquired about the delay and was confronted with rude staff, and asked to wait as wouldn't be long. still waiting, and asked for refund in the end, which then takes 3 days for bank. refuse to refund drinks that came with meal, when we wouldn't have drank them if we thought we wasent going to be eaten. not an apology for delay or anything. Just rude poor customer service. cheap I know but no excuse for poor manners.
