Great hospitality, extremely attentive staff. Very good food. Don’t forget to take own alcohol. Very busy establishment, full by 1930 and constant stream of takeaways too.

This has been my local for the last 17 years and I think it’s time I gave this establishment its flowers. Absolutely sublime food, I order a different menu item most visits and am never disappointed. And whilst the food is out of this world they are still outshone by the kind, attentive staff who are nothing but polite and helpful every visit. If there were an option to exceed the 5 star limit I would, the best curry in North Yorkshire.

My partner and I arrived around 9.30pm and were seated straight away. The restaurant does not have an alcohol licence so if you want a drink with your meal its bring your own booze, so far so good. I placed a bottle of wine on our table which was immediately picked up and 2 glasses placed in front of us, the wine was poured by the waiter, again no problem. We shared a pickle tray and a main meal each which was enjoyable. Our main gripe was when the bill arrived we were charged £1.75 each “corkage” which we had never encountered before, so for the privilege of unscrewing a wine cap we were charged £3.50. Clearly not a life changing amount of money but as a principal we felt this a bit of a rip off, the bottle of wine was only 6 quid! Food is fine service is ok but be advised open your own wine before the waiter gets hold of it.

Food ok, shame fresh chilli’s were only thrown in at the end of cooking and charge 1.25 for a Poppadum but charge 6.00 because of 4 small pops of cheap accompaniments!!! Thieves

This is one of these little gem's of an Indian restaurant that sits quietly on the high street opposite the grandness of The Crown Inn Hotel, where we were staying. A walk across the street, bring your own alcohol and your taste buds, ready for them to be awaked with a variety of spices, herbs and Asian flavours to entice you to repeat the experience. The food was beautifully presented, the services was excellent; with a smile from all 5 waiters who served us our gorgeous cuisine. If you like Asian food served with a smile and host of tastes, you have to visit. Enjoy

On a whim we called in the restaurant the evening before to book a table, We are not locals so didn't know what to expect. Very friendly staff.. Very clean restaurant... Ladies bathroom was the nicest smelling bathroom I have ever been in.. Service was excellent, we weren't rushed and asked did we want a little break between courses. ( which we did). The food was exceptionally good, I can honestly say I think this is the best starter (mixed starter) and the best pasanda i have ever tasted. My husband had mixed starter (but different to mine) and he said it was amazing. He also had a madras but asked if they could turn down the heat just a touch. Which the waiter said was not a problem.. My Husband said it was amazing.. The price was cheaper than we expected. So all in all a very good night. Thank you and the next time we visit Boroughbridge we will be having another curry.

Popped in on our way North, no reservation just didn't fancy motorway service food. Omg. Absolutely blown away by this place. The service was outstanding, the food was amazing.. packed out with customers, many being personally greated, so can tell its a local favourite. Can't recommend this place enough

Avoid at all costs. Reheated, dry yet somehow greasy, not fresh at all. Owner is argumentative and claimed this was "fine dining".. look at the photo! They left Bradford because in Bradford they would close within a week because from that side of Yorkshire we know good curry and kebabs.

Myself and 3 family members had dinner on 30 July, the food was excellent, delicious. We didn't realise they didn't sell alcohol, no problem though. What we thought unacceptable was that they would not serve us a glass or jug of tap water, especially as that is against the law. All hospitality establishments are obliged to serve tap water to any person who requests it! They did offer to sell us bottled water. Kathy

I visit here every year when staying in Boroughbridge. We rang ahead and booked a table as it can get busy. I had chicken ticka garlic and my husband had chicken ticka jalfraize. Both were absolutely delicious, my husband said his taste buds do somersaults it's that nice. We had garlic naan which was really nice and tasty. It wasn't doughy or stodgy. You can't purchase alcohol in restaurant but for a small surcharge you can take your own in. Prices are very reasonable, staff are great and attentive. Would recommend a visit if your in Boroughbridge.

Dry lamb, dry chicken, average seekh kebab, barely any meat for £9.95. Having grown up next to Bradford, I can confidently say that if there was any decent competition around here for this place, it would likely close down. I'd rather pay the fuel to go to international or shezaans than ever frequent this place again. Stupid enough to go a few times but this was the last straw. Cheap nasty food a high prices. Lol at the owners response.. fine dining hahahaha. I'm not after a cheap meal you fool I'm after good quality food, something you don't serve. You left Bradford because they'd spit your food out there and came out to the sticks where people don't know what good curry is. Based on your idiotic reply I've dropped you to one star from two. We've dined out plenty at the Grantham, Hideaway, tap on the tutt, the wild swan.. all more expensive than you and we frequently return.. because they're good quality.

Visited again for dinner whilst I'm in Boroughbridge which is an annual thing. We rang ahead and reserved a table. Very reasonably priced. Staff are great and very attentive. I had chicken ticka garlic which is to die for, it is gorgeous. My husband had chicken ticka jalfreize which he says is the best he's ever tasted and makes his taste buds do somersaults it's that nice. Garlic naan is beautiful, it's not stodgy or doughy. You can't purchase alcohol here but you can take your own to have with your meal which most people do. They just serve soft drinks, alcohol free cobra and another alcohol free lager. If your in Boroughbridge and fancy a curry then this is the place to eat. Highly recommended.

Staying just down the road so popped in for a take out. Great service, friendly staff and really enjoyed the food I ordered. Good portion size and value.

1 star to much for this place! Muck! Worst curry house I've ever been to! Shame as it was recommended. customers be warned to watch and check your bill ! They over charge you for things you haven't had. You can clearly see this by the amended slip. The corkage charge is a joke, we took 2 pints in from the local club which where in a pint glasses already, but still charged corkage. Are you that desperate for a extra £3.50?? . Food very bland and tasteless! Customer service skills when quizzed over my bill are totally disgusting! . Will not be returning and certainly will not recommend. A ready meal from morrisons would have tasted better!

We were staying at the Crown across the road, I thought this would be ideal for our evening meal, I was impressed with the decor & cleanliness of the premises, the staff all well dressed helpful & polite. The letdown was the food, I had a Madras, my wife a korma, we both thought it was very bland & tasteless, prawns not pink, but dry & chewy, appeared to be some sort of base curry or gravy sauce with Chilli added for the Madras & no other spices. As I was paying the bill I told the waiter I was very disappointed with the lack of taste in the meals but he did not seem to be concerned. Be warned you cannot have a proper beer with your curry, alcohol free Kingfisher @ £3.40 for a small bottle.

Normally very good , but last takeaway was certainly not cooked fresh , rice cold and meal warm at best , if that ever happens again ill never return last chance. !!

Prompt service. Pleasant surroundings. My dish, chicken tikka biryani, was tasty and filling, although unexceptional. Not a licences premises, so you will have to take your own alcohol. Soft drinks expensive.

Fantastic restaurant, excellent food, service and overall experience. We go when staying at the Crown Inn and really look forward to it every time. This is our favourite Indian restaurant from dozens we've been to. Difficult to recommend any specific dishes as they're all great. Very good naan breads and rice choices also.

That is the worst Curry I have ever had there was just myself and the cost was 29 95 what a lot of money won't be going there again plus the place was empty not a good sign

Ordered over the phone for collection. Easy to order and quick collection time. Once I got home I realised they hadn't included my drinks. The food was very bland, barely any taste to either of the dishes. Also the insist on cash only...Really wouldn't go back or recommend.

It's extremely rare that we find an Indian restaurant that we enjoy as much as our local one . We spent a night at the crown hotel and booked a table here. The food was beautiful. The staff were extremely friendly and welcoming . It's take your own drinks also which we love. Only thing I didn't like is the outside toilets but this wouldn't put me off going again

Dined here Saturday night. Was seated near the bar and had constant human traffic collecting takeaway orders so not very relaxing place to dine. Ordered two curries rice chips chapatti and garlic naan. Food was quick and the chicken was chewy, hardly any chicken to be fair which was just as well, and we were still hungry, bill came to 40 quid and I noticed they’d tried to overcharge us so I queried plus corkage charge was about 3.75 to open two bottles of beer, wouldn’t return, felt I’d been done to be honest and it’s nearly six quid for a bottle of water. Disappointed

Amazing service, family run you can see the real dedication making sure everyone is happy, fresh food and happy to change dishes if you fancy something else, bring your own alcohol which isn’t a problem, great authentic dishes and milder ones for everyone else

Good food, polite friendly staff, traditional setting, bring your own bottle. We both had a starter and a main, unfortunately my onion bhaji starter was cold on the inside, I was offered a replacement but decided not to . The bill with one small bottle of water and the £1.50 corkage charge each the bill came to a reasonable £ 37

Excellent menu, relaxed atmosphere with olive, friendly staff. First class.

Food was bland. The sauce has been watered down. My wife and I had rice floating on our plates from the curry sauce. They do not warn you that it's cash only which was a surprise.

Great prompt friendly service despite restaurant being busy. Food was very tasty, I had a keema dish which was lovely, and had plenty of heat! Waiter gave us a free side dish and threw in some free poppadoms for our leftovers to take home. As mentioned in other reviews it is a Bring Your Own drinks place if you want to drink alcohol, but there’s a Spar just round the corner, where we went. Corkage charge was quite low at around £1.75 each I believe. Will definitely return!

Food very good. But they lose a star for refusing to give a child a glass of tap water and insisting on providing an over priced bottle of water.

Absolutely first class, we where staying close by on a caravan park so decided to have a takeaway and it was spot on, next time we will probably eat inside the restaurant as it was a very pleasant atmosphere while we where waiting for our meal. Hope to see you soon.

Food is perfect but didn't like the way that when we had starter we were asked 4 times what would we like for mains they should give more breathing space it felt uncomfortable and we felt rushed I would expect sum sort of free dinner or part refund for poor customer service

Customer service is good but food was not tasty, ordered roti but instead was given nan bread, butter chicken too sweet and lamb biryani as no taste whatsoever really disappointing not worth the money

Disappointed didn’t taste of anything really bland curry both mine and husbands were really poor very watery and no flavour, the lemon rice was nice!

The best curry we have had, in town for two nights, went both nights, it is exceptional!! The place is nice and clean, linen fresh and white, staff very friendly and attentive, food out the top drawer! My wife likes the odd curry but she loved it, eno to go twice, to my amazement and delight, and very reasonably priced. I live 80 miles away but I’ll be back… soon!

We've eaten Indian all over the world. We drove from harrogate for this and let me tell you, wow we were stuffed! We're big eaters had the set meal for 2, Couldn't finish it, the naan was super fresh and crispy, just out of a clay oven 100% the onion bhaji are to die for. Fabulous food all round. 5***** nothing in harrogate is this good 👍

On a long drive up the A1 fancying a curry and found this place as a 5 minute detour. Service was amazing and attentive with great recommendations of the lamb jaflongee and tandoori murgh masala which were both delicious. Big portions and great value for money!

Enjoyed a lovely meal here on our recent stay in Boroughbridge. We had asked a few locals in a nearby pub for their recommendation before we visited and all were full of praise for the Shahri Raj and I must say their recommendation was warranted. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the restaurant had a lovely decor and atmosphere. The gentleman who took our order was very helpful regarding our choices and was very knowledgable regarding the menu and recommended a cooling sauce for my partner’s spicy dish. The food was promptly served and proved absolutely delicious. My dish, a lamb bhuna, was one of the best I had ever had and my partner agreed that her chicken tandoori was equally as good. Service was prompt in clearing our table between courses as we had popadoms and dips and a chicken chatt and a lamb chop starter and the staff allowed us a minute before our main meal. A wine bottle holder was provided as locals had recommended we take a bottle of wine from a nearby supermarket as the restaurant only serves soft drinks and hot towels and after dinner mints were presented after our meal. Thank you Shahri Raj for a lovely dining experience.

Great service and great atmosphere, staff are smiley and very helpful, bring your own with a slight corkage charge, very cheap considering bottle of wine & corkage total cost £7 compared to restaurants selling wines for £20, food was piping hot and very fresh, family run business and you could feel the care and attention received, cute little place, food prices should be more considering how expensive everything is, but I’m not complaining 😂

Very expensive. Every item was charged separately. Medium bottle of water was £5.95!!!! The menu on display outside the restaurant is for takeaway and does not tell you the restaurant menu is different.

Starter (Chicken Tikka) was inedible. Tasted like it was cooked 3 months ago...Main was OKish but prawns had a really stale taste and texture. Won't be visiting again for sure...It's a shame because service was really good.

Weiße Damasttischdecken, Stoffservietten und ein aufmerksames Servicepersonal. Allerdings gibt es hier keinerlei Alkohol zu trinken. Nur ein Bier ohne. Trotzdem eine absolute Empfehlung

Today we had our anniversary dinner at Shahi Raj restaurant and we couldn’t pick a better place. The staff were very friendly and very professional-they surely know their menu inside out! I couldn’t make my mind up so they offered a variety of smaller dishes which was beyond we could wish for! We both left with “foodbabies” :) Thank you very much, we’re looking forward to coming back soon.

Good food in a busy restaurant where service was ok and a Bring your own bottle system was in operation.

Delicious! Was full at 6pm on a Saturday night so we grabbed a take away which was really good quality and full of flavour.

Visited with my wife at about 6.30 pm on Good Friday. We hadn't booked but restaurant was quiet so we were welcomed in and given a choice of tables to sit at. It is a BYOB place with no liquor licence. We were given glasses and the waiter kindly opened and poured our beers for us. Our orders for starters and mains were taken and quite soon afterwards the food arrived. We both thoroughly enjoyed all the food we had and the impeccably dressed staff and service were very good. Our dining experience probably warrants 5 stars but I have only given 4 as I do object to the imposition of a £1.75 per person "corkage" fee for providing a glass and pouring a bottle of beer out which we would normally do ourselves.

Haven't ordered from here for a couple of weeks but passed it today and thought I never did review them... I first came here years ago, well over a decade, then when I moved up here I was very excited to find this place hasn't changed one bit on high quality food. I have always had a brilliant dining experience when eating in, staff are so friendly and attentive, food is sublime and packed full of flavour. Takeout ... stays the same, food always been brilliant. Love it, highly rate it and gunna order one next week or might bring the wife to touch the hot plate again (to check it's hot, yes it burnt her hand but was so funny ) ...

We were a party of four ,last Friday. 1st. April, and had a wonderful time at the Shahi Raj. Bring your own alcoholic drinks ( not water or soft drinks, as they sell this ) Service was absolutely excellent, all the waiting staff seemed happy to be there. Food was really good. We had 4 different dishes, and absolutely no complaints. Highly recommended.

Visited Shahi Raj whilst staying at The Crown Hotel, which is directly opposite. Can’t praise it highly enough. Had a gorgeous meal, but the best bit was the wonderful friendly professional staff who excelled at customer service. The service was exemplary. They were constantly greeting...

When I explained it needed to be a card payment they then miraculously said the machine was working (I smell tax fraud). Ordered meal totalling over £60 in value. On arrival I found the staff member to be be rude and somewhat aggressive. He took exception to my request for a receipt (more tax fraud?). On arrival home I was very disappointed to find the meal of very poor standard, cheap ingredients and the order mostly made wrong. Nan - Burnt, tastless and hardly any keema or cheese in it Lamb Chops - Burnt to a crisp and inedible Special Biriani - Specifically said King Prawn only - No shrimps. Came full of shrimp and little else Chips - Had been cooked for about 5 seconds, soggy, cheap tasteless, no seasoning Ordered Biriani sauce phal hot, just came plain with a watery Phal sauce thrown in the box Very little meats in the other dishes, clearly the restaurant is dying a death and, with food like this, I'm not surprised. I packed all the food back up and retuned it to the shop for a full refund. Again met with arrogance and aggressive behaviour from the staff who refused to refund the money despite the whole order being returned. Flat refused a refund claiming he couldn't refund on the credit card machine. Refused to refund in full despite all food being returned. Fortunately I paid on a credit card so will ask the bank to return the payment instead. Stay clear of here!!! I should've stuck to the far superior Taste of India where a warm welcome is always guaranteed from Abdul and his team. I stupidly thought that a Shahi Raj would be a welcome change.... How wrong I was!

Came across this restaurant when looking for a Saturday evening meal. It was small, but packed and we were lucky to get the last table. Locals seemed to be taking advantage of bringing their own bottles and paying corkage, but we thoroughly enjoyed their lassi....

Came here with family for a relaxing curry and catch up. The service and food is good, however we were rushed at each course and after only an hour after sitting down were told that they needed the table back in 5 minutes! Tap water...

Ate here tonight, lovely food and friendly staff! The lime pickle was very spicy so beware of that if you aren’t a spice fiend! Starters were quality and the mains were even better, absolutely no complaints whatsoever!

We decided to do something different this year and book in to the Shahi Raj for our Christmas lunch. So glad we did the food was fab ,the staff were lovely even the other guest where happy and merry.

If you are in the area and enjoy Indian cuisine there is no other place to go. I travel for work and go all over the country and Indian cuisine is one thing I can’t live without. We actually had dinner from here 3 times over the course of the time we were working in the area and also went to some of the other Indians but as a final conclusion this place was the best. The first time we Sat in the restaurant, they don’t serve alcohol but do allow you to bring in small bottles to enjoy with your meal if you choose. The second time we came in to order to eat out. And the final time we ordered a takeaway. So we tried all three options and personally if I could go back I would choose to sit down each and every time. Don’t get me wrong the food was beautiful on all 3 occasions But it was the staff and the elegance of the atmosphere in the restaurant that made the meal go far further in my opinion than most places I have been. If I am in the area again in 2023 I hope there will be a table free after I finish work, because I can think of no where else I would rather go for Indian cuisine than here.

Had a takeaway for four people. All were very bland. They seem to have swapped spices for food colouring and salt. Very expensive too for what we got. Would expect much better quality and flavour for restaurant prices.

Meal was lovely, but, they charged us £3.00 to open our own screw top bottle of wine, they would have got a tip of more than the £3.00

We first visited the restaurant on our way up to Scotland in late August. We were so impressed that we booked again for our return home in September. Really excellent food on both occasions and delightful, caring staff. Many thanks!

Once again we have returned to the Sharing Raj restaurant but with friend's this time, they also where very impressed with the food, they also cater for GF customers on request.....Again wonderfull Indian food, full of delicious flavours and spot on service.....We'll be back ! TREVOR.
