Seahorse Cafe, East Preston, West Sussex in Arun

We took our three grandchildren here a few days ago and ordered lunch. Every meal was unsatisfactory. The eggs Benedict were cold, and when returned to the kitchen were zapped in the microwave and returned to us with solid eggs. The beef burgers were so overcooked that even our hungry grandsons had trouble eating them. Our grandaughter chose pancaked which were blackened around the edges and generally unappetising. We didn’t want to make a fuss whilst the children were with us, but honestly how difficult was it to get it right?

After driving over an hour to visit East Preston we were looking forward to a good cup of coffee and pastries, we ordered but hardly any choice of pastries then we waited and waited the order eventually arrived without hot milk the waitress had spilt the coffee in the saucer, the tables were dirty, I went inside to use the toilet which was dirty absolutely disgraceful, the tables in the cafe were cluttered with dirty dishes not one clean table, health and safety need to look at this cafe, I don’t know what has happened it used to be quite nice.

Have come with my partner for breakfast and absolutely shocked and disgusted at the state of cleanliness. I have watched numerous customers ask for tables to be cleared only for the dirty plates etc to be put on empty tables around us. A customer asked if the dishwasher was broken due to all the mess. They told her yes, but I watched them load it and use it!! The staff are moody bar one, I smiled 3 times at the girl taking my order and not once did she reciprocate!! I specifically asked for the mushrooms to be cooked from fresh as last I came they were awful. Only to be served up the same!! Been coming here for years, it has gone down hill so won’t be coming again.

Our second visit and Chloe and Ella remembered us! That is worth everything alone! I have to mention that their cheery smiles and friendly demeanour is so genuine………we had the Chorizo Benedict this time…….oh my days! Just incredible taste! Highly recommended!

We had egg chorizo Benedict it was beautiful the hollandaise sauce and eggs were spectacular! Service was wonderful Emma and Chloe were brilliant! 10 out of 10 definitely worth a visit!

What has happened used to use this lovely cafe once a week havent been for a while and it’s now not good. Coffee was fine staff polite but the food just poor had the chicken club which was shocking. Chicken so over cooked and clearly had been made miles in advance bacon cooked to a inch of death and just had no taste whatsoever. Sorry I won’t be back for food anymore you’ve lost my custom

The food was good, however the staff members were not the best. Young females, who were excluding one of their trainees, for making a honest mistake-which was resolved straight away. Making comments to our group of friends about this one of the staff memebers. We have asked for a manager, and the response we got was there is not set manager. The girl who was excluded, asked to go home and she ended up walking out very upset. Someone on our table went up personally to the girl and explained that it was okay, and everyone makes mistakes. The other girls were stood there laughing and making comments. Made us feel very unwelcome and I wouldn’t wish for my sister or daughter to be working in an environment like that! Very disappointed!

Visited this cafe on Thursday and was soo disappointed. Sat outside with dog and children and tables were filthy. Asked if someone could give them a wipe or I could do it and you would of thought I asked for the world!! The young lady came out AFTER we had got our drinks and wiped the table flicking all the remains of someone else’s breakfast all over us (much to the delight of the dog). No smiles, no apologies… nothing. Also food was ok but all the eggs we ordered were hard and not what we were expecting when you’ve ordered ham, egg and chips for £9 and poached eggs on toast. Staff seriously not interested in pleasing their clientele

Visited this cafe for lunch recently! Very impressed with the food and the service, the staff were very inviting and polite when serving us, food was delicious, drinks were also very pleasing. Will defo be visiting again. Perfect cafe for any occasion with friends or family!

First visit and was disappointed to be honest. Member of staff was not welcoming, seemed irritated when I asked what iced drinks they had (it states iced drinks on the board). You can have an iced tea as long as you have a flavoured syrup added to it.... ordered avocado on toast with smoked salmon and poached eggs. Was informed they had run out of sourdough so opted for brown toast however needed a steak nice to cut through it! Avocado was good, smoked salmon delicious, poached eggs runny but cold. Two waitresses, the place was half full, tables left uncleared and neither of them asked if everything was ok with our meals. Lots of flies in the cafe which was very annoying, the flies had plenty of dirty plates to land on! Perhaps its a summer job for the two young waitresses and so they dont really care about customer service or havent been trained properly. Wont be rushing back to eat there again.

What a shame. This used to be lovely but sadly gone downhill. For a sunny bank holiday Monday, it wasn’t as busy as I’d expect but, even though there appeared to be four or five girls working, the service was incredibly slow. Although very pleasant, the girls didn’t appear to have any sense of urgency - tables were left with dirty crockery for some time and in the window seat there were two dirty cups for the duration of our visit, which was almost an hour due to the wait. When the food did arrive it was mediocre to say the least. I ordered one of the specials which was described as scrambled egg with asparagus and crispy bacon. Although it was a generous size portion, the bacon was by no means crispy - quite the opposite - and the asparagus had not been properly prepared - clearly the chef was not aware the one should snap off the woody end! My partner ordered the Seahorse breakfast with scrambled egg. When it arrived it was a fried egg. We pointed it out to the waitress who took it away and returned with the smallest amount of scrambled egg - about a teaspoonful! Likewise with the baked beans, a tiny portion. None of the food was very hot either. To be fair, it wasn’t overly expensive but I would rather pay a bit more for better quality and better service. There was clearly a lack of management today.

popped in for coffee and ended up having lunch as well, pleasant young staff, food and coffee was good . even bought cakes for later.

Not the same anymore We were frequent customers but sadly the quality of food & service has really gone downhill. Cutlery not clean .just all looks a bit neglected. No compote for porridge but still. Cost the same . Let’s hope it reverts back to what it was needs sorting out please ! !

Visited today for the first time when out for a walk . All the staff were friendly and welcoming. The place was nice and clean . We had hot drinks and cakes which were very tasty

The all day breakfast is exactly that...you have to wait all day for it to arrive at your table! Then the order was wrong believe it or not. Had to receive a refund and get out before it got dark!

I went here today for the first time in many years. I last came in 2015 and unfortunately I left a horrible review regarding dogs inside for which I am deeply sorry for and I hope they can accept my apology. Understandably I am blocked from the Facebook page. At the time I had not long been discharged from meadowfield hospital and was in a very bad place mentally. Anyway, fast forward to 2022 and I'm a domiciliary carer that loves animals. I had a lovely pumpkin spice latte in there and sat outside. It was very nice and the Halloween decorations were lovely. I use a moniker on here. I would recommend the Seahorse Cafe to everyone.

Excellent! Excellent! Cheerful service ( which isn't often seen these days), food is local produce (that's good), delicious 'specials'. Will definitely return to this little gem. Well done to all who help to make it such an enjoyable visit.

My wife and I arrived fifteen mintues before closing time on Sunday afternoon but were welcomed in and able to order tea and cake with no drama.Both tea and cake were excellent, and the service friendly.Cafe has indoor and outdoor seating for a limited number of tables, so if it is busy you would need to wait. Overall cleanliness and covid arrangements appeared to be good.

Had to write a review as it is so utterly wonderful! My eggs benefict was superb. For £5.75 not one but 2 slices of toast 2 eggs and the very tastiest, melt in the mouth thickest bacon I've ever had; and all locally sourced. It truly is the best cafe I've ever eaten at. A lovely vibe and staff that go above and beyond too. It is well worth the trip!

Great spot for lunch. We were guided to our spotless table and shown the munu which was extensive. Excellent service and the waiter was brilliant!

We rang first to see if booking was necessary and a very helpful and personable lady said that it was first come first served and that it would be busier the next day, so best to come today, so we did. Although they were actually quite busy the two of us were still accommodated at a little table, the proprietor and her staff were friendly and efficient. Wanting a light lunch we ordered a bacon and avocado wrap and a bacon and stilton panini, as such were each described on the menus and web site. To our pleasant surprise they both came with an impressive full mixed salad, very tasty, and a generous quantity of crisps. All went down well with our pots of tea. All together a very pleasant experience.

Visited at lunchtime , two of us and a large dog. Seated outside initially until it started raining, then kindly offered a table inside, even with my dog, so thank you. Our sandwiches were large , fresh and delicious. The Seahorse is doing a great job within the Covid guidelines. Everything is clean and sanitised. We will be back . Ps thank you for the Bonio

We love the Seahorse hence why I’ve only taken one star off. What’s really frustrating is we’ve eaten here 4 times in the last couple of weeks and every time they have forgotten something of our meals. This week they forgot my tomatoes of my breakfast and then 2 days later they forgot my wife’s chips. Yes they brought them out when we asked but please it can’t be that hard to check the meals before they are sent out from the kitchen. Come on Seahorse you can do better than this we don’t want to keep asking for the missing food

Absolutely fantastic little cafe in East Preston where you can either sit inside or outside. Both areas are very Covid-19 compliant.The menu is really extensive and the options are numerous. They cater for all tastes including vegetarian and vegan.Very polite staff and the food we had was absolutely fantastic and very tasty.A very reasonably priced to eat of which we'll certainly be going back in the not too distant future.Keep up the good work.

I visited the cafe on a Saturday afternoon with my two young daughters. There was a large group of people sat around two tables that had been pushed together, next to them were two empty tables, so to adhere to social distancing (because the tables were not 1 metre apart) I sat at the furthest table from the large group as I thought this was the correct thing to do ( we are all trying to get used this new normal), I was then told very abruptly by a waitress that "three people could not sit around the table I was on due to social distancing and the table we were on was only meant for two people and that I had to move to the table closest to the large group", she then added "by the way we are closing soon so it is no food just drinks". She was so rude, had I not promised my daughters a hot chocolate I would have walked out. I chose to spend my money at this establishment to support a local business and I wish I hadn't bothered. If you want an unfriendly welcome and rude staff then this is the place to go. This is certainly somewhere I will never go back to and do not recommend.

Great experience from start to finish welcoming staff lovely food well presented would highly recommend. Been here as a family and a couple. Always busy but never a long wait.

First time at the Seahorse yesterday and it was wonderful. Great choice of food which was very tasty, very reasonably priced, big portions, clean, friendly and polite staff and socially distanced tables. Lovely place and will be back.

Just took my son who absolutely loves the new lunch menu on offer. Very clean and service was spot on but best of all was the food a must for anyone wanting good food right near the beach 👍

I came in whilst we were visiting family, it’s was quite busy being a weekend food was good and service was okaay but what really annoyed me was all the teenage girls behind the counter one their phones!! To me this is very unprofessional.

Having read that the Seahorse cafe was dog friendly we walked there for breakfast on 3 days as it was so good. The staff were friendly and efficient and we enjoyed varied lovely breakfasts with delicious coffees.

Intended to come out for breakfast ended up doing lunch . Had an off menu order which was no problem . Very busy but the staff were coping really well . Nice food chips and eggs were nicely done . All in all good experience . Would recommend if you’re passing through. Friendly staff

Booked for a steak night and so glad we did. Ended up with a tomahawk steak for two and one of the best we've eaten. We've been back a few times for coffee etc and look forward to the next steak night. Highly rated, book early, ask about themed nights and reserve in advance they become booked very quickly.

Had a mid morning breakfast , the items I chose were very good,, the service as always was good, and the Cafe was busy, a goodsign of a well run establishment,and very good food.

Have never been to the Seahorse cafe before but on a wet Monday morning it was heaving. Enjoyed eggs bacon and toast with coffee which was hot and freshly cooked. Definately go there again

Wow. Great meal of vegan stack and chips. Huge bum with loads of fillings.couldn't finish it. Following by vegan pancake ,4 pancakes. A must for vegans.

Lovely spot for a coffee and a cake after a dog walk on the beach. Sunny patio. Spotlessly clean and bright interior. Super friendly staff. The best bit for us - dog friendly. Water outside and dog sausages on the menu. Hot food looked really tasty. Will definitely go back with more four-legged friends.

This cafe was just 5 minutes walk from our holiday house and right by the sea. We had breakfast there one morning and it was very nice. Great choice, and freshly made - loved the sausages!

I stopped here for a drink with my family after a walk in the local area. We had drinks and found the prices surprisingly expensive (£2.20 for 250ml of orange juice). The outside tables were cheap and surfaces dirty. It's fine for a brief rest stop but I wouldn't re-visit. That being said I didn't try the food so that might be a different case entirely.

We were delighted to discover the Sea Horse a few years ago before we moved to East Preston especially as it is one of the genuinely dog friendly places we can enjoy a meal. There is always a friendly welcome. The staff are always pleasant and helpful The food is usually good as well as being good value for money.,( Where do they get those eggs?) On the odd occasion that something is not quite right they are more than happy to fix it. Caters for all tastes.They a flexible too, so that if someone wants something that is a bit different from the menu they will do their best (and usually succeed) in meeting such requests.

We both had a milk shake, very small for the price. Panini was tasty with a small salad garnish as was the sandwich too. Staff were fine. Wooden boxes with condiments in on the floor outside the toilet . All in all was ok, needs a tidy up as it looks tired. Would I rush back, no.

Had a late lunch today (Wednesday) at the Seahorse Café.

I felt that this awful restaurant was a shadow cased on our lovely village it is much to chain-like and does not feel like it belongs in a village like East Preston. the food is also poor and does not compare at all to the Grub And Gumption nearby. the service was poor and didn't achieve my expectations.

This place is great, we are so glad we found it. Had a big breakfast and a beer it was delicious. You can tell a good breakfast by the sausage, this sausage rocked! The service was great too, all young people but attentive and polite.

Being a cafe they tend to close fairly early but the cooked breakfast is excellent and great to sit outside in the summer

We had our ladies basketball team Christmas meal at the Seahorse Cafe. The staff were fantastic and very friendly. The meal was delicious, lovely roast dinner with lots of trimmings. Great atmosphere for a Christmas party.

The Sea Horse cafe is a brilliant little gem tucked away in East Preston a stones throw from the beach. Always stop for breakfast or coffee and cake and or lunch. All very good and always fresh and plenty. During summer I visit pretty much everyday after a long walk.

Nice cafe bit lacking in fresh gluten free bits but a nice coffee and helpful serving ladies with a good view of the village

So I came here with a friend for an impromptu lunch and it was absolutely delicious! A simple menu, but lots of choice to suit all needs. Breakfast all day, sandwiches and the specials board, what more could you want!

Came here for two bacon baps, to take away. We thought that they were being cooked fresh as we were told to wait 5 minutes. Baps arrive at £4 each with two measly bits of bacon in that didn’t even fill the bap, it was all bap and no bacon and the bacon was cold. Sticking to Angmering Station Cafe where it is cooked fresh to order and £2.50 a bacon sandwich with 4 bits of bacon in per sandwich!

Having walked all the way to East Preston, and been refused food at the Sea View we went here for a sandwich

when did it become ok to have to share a small café space with multiple dogs some of them barking - while their owners may feel this is not a big issue others don't get a choice some are allergic to dogs some nervous around them and others simply don't like them. on our recent visit , café was fairly busy 3 dogs indoors while we ate, one barked several times over throughout the meal. Distracting and a little irritating. Outside where dog walker gather I don't have a problem but indoors means there is no choice for those that don't want to be with dogs....food was fine, service fine, cream for coffee was off and had to be returned not the end of the world but we were irritable because of the dogs so didn't enjoy our visit

Good choice for breakfast menu. My husband likes a big breakfast but I prefer just eggs on toast, which was perfectly cooked. The service was good and did not have to wait too long. No complaints and I am sure we will be back again.

There are lots of tables inside and out including small tables for 1 or 2 people and a window table with high stools too. Whether with friends or by myself, I always enjoy the food here. The kids love the smoothies and the large skinny lattes are perfect for me. There is always something for everyone on the menu in this beach-shack ambient cafe.

Had their "big breakfast" twice whilst on holiday in the area. Excellent sausages, bacon and all the usual trimmings. Good service despite the place being super busy. High quality ingredients at very good prices.

Always love visiting the seahorse cafe when I’m in the area. The staff are very welcoming and friendly and always do the extra bit for their customers. The food is very delicious at good prices too. Lovely place not to far from the beach and just a great place to visit

Went for lunch this week. Ham, egg & chips was ordered. The menu states “a generous portion of chips”. Thankfully the portion WASN’T generous because the chips were vile. They were a good colour but greasy and flaccid.

Love the way this cafe is moving with the times. They do the most amazing specials which seem to sell out really quick. Staff very friendly and great value for money

This is everything you want from a beach cafe, with good value, good quality food, a varied breakfast and lunch menu, great vegetarian options and an absolute plethora of dogs. This is a dog and baby-friendly venue with a lovely atmosphere. I’ve never seen it empty and the staff are welcoming and always do a good job.

Very nice staff, good service and 8 of us had various breakfasts on Sunday morning with decent coffee plus one of the party asked for gluten free toast & got it. Nice end to our ladies weekend

The Sea Horse Cafe is a bright cafe, just a few minutes walk from the beach at East Preston, it's set amongst a handful of shops and local bars and cafes. It has outside and inside seating, features a range of modern Cafe style foods, salads, Jacket Potatoes, all day breakfasts, cakes, coffees and wine and beer when ordering food. You have to go to the counter to place your order. Internally it's all quite pleasant and clean looking, price wise fairly reasonable. I had a double poached egg on toast and my friend a Jacket Potato - and this is where the problems begin, like all these places now days, they think it's great to go over board and not give you what you ordered. I received two rock hard poached eggs on undercooked soggy wholemeal toast, the eggs are supposed to be local, and instead tasted nasty and of course very rubbery and despite no indication in the menu, they were covered in Cress as a garnish to hide the fact they were harder than marbles and the toast was softer than cotton wool. The Jacket potato was lost in a sea of salad and red cabbage. The place was busy at it was a very sunny day, but why oh why can't these places just stop with the garnish and salad and just ask you first! Also it would be really great if they learnt that a poached egg is not meant to double up as a tennis ball.

Came upon this great place by chance after a walk on the beach. The full breakfast is awesome and a huge serving! The smoothies were proper tasty and the friendly staff were more than happy to make a special order for my son (fussy eater).
