Been staying at Port Elliot Estate for weekend so popped in for takeaway on Friday evening, between 6 of us we had the Cod , Chips & peas, chicken burger and the Scholars burger and all where fantastic. On the strength of the takeaway we booked for the Sunday Carvery, well what can I say ,Service was spot on the carvery was absolutely superb and chef Andy dished it beautifully and exp, aimed how he had cooked each the green and with what ingredients. All in all first class service, first class food but all at a price that surprised even us Cornishmen, fantastic value for money. Well done team Scholars.

We’ve been going to Scholars for several years now, when visiting my mum who lives nearby. It is the most fantastic place to eat: the food is simply amazing. You can tell that the menu is prepared thoughtfully with fresh ingredients, sourced locally, and the menu always has something for everybody (we meat eaters often visit with my very elderly aunt and sometimes with my vegetarian sister in law). The chef at Scholars is so talented - everything we’ve eaten cooked by Andy has been amazing. The service is excellent too: we always receive such a warm welcome and the owner and staff really care about their customers, especially looking after their elderly visitors. They are so patient and kind. Very cool outside area and lovely decor everywhere. Scholars is a real asset to St Germans and we hope to be able to eat here every time we come back to the village

Been meaning to go here for a meal for ages then covid got in the way - as it did for so many things. Finally, yesterday, we had Sunday Lunch, it's carvery and served to you not self service - this is definitely a plus for me. We were a late booking but they fitted us un and we were the last to arrive. When this happened at other places we were usually left with the rather dried up half meals. Not at Scholars. Everything still very fresh looking and plenty of it. There was a good selection of meats, although the turkey had taken a bit of a hammering prior to our arrival, and 8 veggies plus stuffing balls and Yorkshire puddings. The yorkies were a little bit flat but tasted lovely and everything else was spot on in terms of appearance, taste, texture and variety. Lovely staff too, friendly, just attentive enough, and not overwhelmingly gushing, nor did they hover. We did not feel rushed at all and dessert - mine an apple tart and custard, other half's Chocolate fudge cake and clotted cream - were perfect. On a grey chilly and damp day the restaurant was pleasingly warm, the bar was a tad cold, but that was our only mild gripe as we weren't in it for very long. Overall we are very happy with our experience and we will be regular, if not frequent, guests going forward.

It was a group of 20+ people from a neighbouring village, that went for early Christmas celebrations. I dont normally order turkey when eating out, as I often find it very dry and disappointing. However, this was so not the case at Scholars. It was deliciously moist and the servings were HUGE! Staff were attentive and welcoming. I would honestly give them 10/10 for the food we had on Saturday. Well done Scholars :)

Booked a meal for three at the Steak night. The room was warm with a roaring open fire and the staff welcoming. This was one of the special steak nights and was fantastic value at 2 steak meals and a bottle of wine for £30 My wife and I both had fillet steak cooked rare and our daughter had a rib-eye cooked medium rare. The steaks came with a generous portion of chips, onion rings, peas, mushrooms and tomato The steak was honestly the best I have had, cooked to perfection, full of flavour and the knife cut through it like butter! We look forward to another steak night, thank you Scholars

What a gem of a find, bumped into the owner (?) on our afternoon walk who was carrying a large metal trunk ( we later found this taking pride of place in the outside part of the restaurant. )He was so friendly we booked a table for the evening there and then That set the tone. Everyone working there was just so friendly and helpful - could not do enough for us. Engaging in lovely conversations. The food was so tasty and portions plentiful. Puddings a treat too ( again very generous portions). My husband said the beer was good too. I enjoyed a gin and tonic. Sadly we leave early tomorrow or we would definitely go there again. It’s so lovely to find a place that takes time with customers and makes them feel welcome.

We enjoyed two family evening meals here and the quality of the food was very good. Despite the menu being fairly small (often a good thing as it guarantees food is freshly cooked) they kindly provided an alternative vegetarian dish for one of us on our second visit. If I could give this restaurant no stars I would. We booked a table for Saturday the 12th of September for a 30th birthday dinner. The table was booked a week in advance for 7pm but when we arrived the restaurant was closed. No prior warning, no note on the door, nothing. This is such bad customer service especially in the current climate and to be honest, I’m still left stunned that customers can be treated this way. Not that it matters but we are also local people from the next village over and would have come back time and time again if we had had a good experience. A couple of locals who walked past told us that they had heard the chef was ill and that was the reason behind the closure. However, this was the night before our booking and they still didn’t deem it important enough to ring and let us know. We tried to call both numbers on the sign with no answer and I also messaged them, they read the message but again didn’t bother to reply. We were very lucky to get into another restaurant in Saltash called Foreign Muck and this was excellent, they bent over backwards to accommodate us and the food was top notch. The restaurant is obviously doing extremely well if they can afford to neglect their customers.

It seems like a local hotspot, we were the only ones eating and the others all appeared to be one party socialising in the canopy next to us. There was only outdoor dining due to Covid-19 but with a jacket it was fine. Again because of Covid their menu was pretty different and they didn't have a few things that were on that one. But we had the two pies with chips and veg which were both proper cooked pies and the standard, as a pie fanatic, I expect of all pies. Tried the chocolate drizzle, fudge coffee cake for dessert which was nothing like I have ever had - worth a try.

I hadn’t been to the Restaurant for many years. The restaurant downstairs has been imaginatively decorated to provide a light airy environment. There weren’t many customers so atmosphere downbeat. The staff were a little too laid back for my liking but we weren’t in a rush so no harm done. The food was excellent and wine list good.

The upstairs bar looked tired in comparison but brightened by the enthusiasm and geniality of the staff. Drinks prices reasonable. It was a rainy day in South East Cornwall and my partner and I decided to sample the special Senior Citizens' lunch. When we arrived we were warmly greeted and the lady in charge (owner?), who told us about the special Senior Citizens' menu and joked about how it was difficult to tell how old old people are these days (I am 68 and my partner is 60). We were seated in the large barn-like area of the restaurant. A single paraffin heater struggled to heat the premises and the lights were not on. A few pensioners were already stuck into their meals in the semi darkness. I elected to have the Senior Citizens' menu and my partner, not attracted by the options on the little Senior Citizens menu blackboard we were shown, went for a starter instead. The service was intermittent and inconsistent. I asked for a bottled lager and was given a pint. My partner asked for a slimline tonic with her gin and was given a full fat one instead. There was no choice of menu for senior citizens as we were told that the duck and chicken delivery had not arrived. I had a very potatoey broccoli soup that I struggled to finish followed by pork with roast vegetables. The pork was quite fatty and there were plenty of roast vegetable that, again, I was unable to finish. The potatoes were not very roasted and there were two slightly slimy things that I took to be slices of turnip that I left. The overall impression was that the meal was a carbohydrate fest, which maybe what some customers want. My partner enjoyed her egg on brioche starter, which did indeed look delicious. I think that I was finally deterred from ever going again by being charged the full amount (£11.50) for the Senior Citizen's option I had chosen and not the £9 advertised. I should add that the outside toilets are extremely primitive with a leaking roof and are a good walk away on a rainy day...

We promised our Granddaughter lunch at a nearby restaurant, only to find it was unexpectedly closed. After looking at a couple of other places nearby and not impressed by them, we decided we would cancel our plans and go to our original choice in the evening instead. Driving through St. Germans, we spotted a sign and wondered if it might be somewhere to get a drink and snack. What a stroke of luck, we had stumbled on a true gem. Two fish finger sandwiches and a BLT baguette later, we were determined to come back to try the restaurant. If the restaurant food is as good as the bar food, then this will become a regular for us.Quirky and unusual building, with outside space that would be delightful on a warm summer day, friendly staff, great service, good quality food freshly prepared, and decent choice of beer and wine, what more can you ask for?

What a glorious evening we had here! Lovely staff, great choices of gin at the bar, interesting menus and a wonderful meal. The portions of food were generous yet still superbly cooked. I had the special - panfried gilt head bream served on a bed of mint and pea risotto. The fish was tender and moist, and there were THREE fillets! My starter of toasted brioche topped with a poached egg served with stilton sauce was sublime. Sadly there just wasn't room for dessert after all that but the menu choices looked good.

My wife and I ate in this wondeful unique restaurant on Friday evening and I can say that it is simply the best food I have eaten in a Cornish Restaurant for a long time. Christine the owner and Andy the chef have worked very hard to improve the quality and presentation of the food here. The starters are amazing and it was a pleasure to be served with such beautifully prepared fresh prawns in a delicately mouthwatering sauce. I had Duck breast and oriental vegetables for my main course whilst my wife had a sirloin steak - it was cooked to perfection. Most restaurants in Cornwall are a rip off and a bitter disappointment. Not Scholars though and I would give it 10 stars if I could - highly recommended eating experience in a wonderful old village school ambience. Well done guys and we shall be back very soon.

Melt in your mouth fish and slightly nutty risotto. And we had 3 fillets of fish each! All for £12.75. I don’t often choose a fish dish but I’m so glad I did this time. Not too big but with lots of tasty filling and a really short pastry. The duck breast was cooked beautifully and served with lots of greenery including samphire. Pasta was a tiny bit undercooked, but rich and creamy with plenty of mushrooms. We had a delicious bottle of red wine from Bordeaux. Service was warm and welcoming. Normally, pizzas are not something I get excited about, but Scholars’ pizzas are really good. Made to order topped however you like; their bases are really crisp and the plenty of topping. They are perfect if you want something to share with friends or family. Scholars is a lovely spot and seems very popular with the locals

7pm kickoff England v Colombia, the place to be was here at Scholars. Grab yourself some Chicken & Cherizo skewers (reasonably priced) & you won't regret it!! Excellent service from what feels like a close knit team.

Was passing through St Germans and stopped at Scholars for morning coffee. We sat in the courtyard, which formerly was the school playground. It is an attractive space to sit in. We ordered coffees, which were brought out to us. The chef was preparing for his shift and was very friendly, telling us all about the menu. The place is friendly and we will be back to eat.

We visited for lunch last Friday and had an excellent lunch in the restaurant. Simple choice but delicious and staff very friendly and helpful. There was only one other table occupied which surprised us. We heard about it accidentally from a friend and we only live 5 miles away. We will be back but they really should promote themselves. Lots of people choose Not to use Facebook for a whole host of reasons.

What do you expect if you're offered, and order, a peppered steak sandwich? Well probably not what I've just been served, very pink (undercooked) sliced pork served in a huge piece of stale focaccia, completely wrong and utterly tasteless. I did eat about 10% of it as I was hungry and didn't even bother telling the staff what was wrong, if people serve this up thinking it's acceptable then there's absolutely no point, they're not going to learn.

This is accessible from Port Eliot gardens and also from the main road. Good for teas, cakes and light snacks. The main café is up a very steep flight of steps, but they will bring food and drink down to the courtyard for you which is more of less at street level. Limited cover if it rains though! Very helpful staff

Booked a meal here as my hubby passed it on a bike ride and fancied giving it a try. When we booked we weren't told that we were the only people booked in. As it was a bank holiday Monday, thought the place would have been busy and have a great atmosphere, so would have been nice to know that because they had had a really busy weekend, they had turned bookings down!! Told this on arriving, but had we known we would have gone elsewhere, as i'm not keen on eating out when you are the only people in the restaurant. Chef told us that we could have barbecue that he had been cooking through the day, or limited items on menu as they hadn't had deliveries. (Should have gone with my next instinct to run a mile, but persevered, unfortunately). My brother had salmon and prawn cocktail as a starter, which he really enjoyed, which came out on a slate tile with rosemary bread. My hubby had a cheese board for dessert which was also lovely and served the same way, but the mains (we all had steak) looked like they came from a different restaurant. They came out on canteen style white plates, I thought my steak had a funny taste to it, but my brother seemed to think it was the oil that it had been cooked in, but it was not pleasant and had a huge slab of fat on the side of it, which was inedible, the chips were frozen and the veg was garden peas. I did enjoy the dessert of Gin & Citrus cheesecake, but it was more of a mousse than a cheesecake consistency and you could not taste the Gin. My hubby & brother would probably give the place another go, but I would not. The chef seemed more interested in getting back to his friends downstairs to carry on drinking, so not that keen on his customers.

I went on Friday to watch some live music and to have a meal. The older women were dour and dismissive. It's one of places where they act like they're doing you a favour by serving you?! Poor young girl serving (it seemed she was very new- 'can't imagine she'll stay) 'had to keep going back to the kitchen to answer questions about the menu. Chef came out and he was quite brusque and dismissive when 'explaining' the poached dover sole was poached in a 'liquor' and seemed irritated by my asking what the 'liquor' was. Anyway the Dover sole came and it was plonked atop the few bits of vegetables and was extremely slimy. I could only eat half.

We popped in for a drink and decided to try the outside menu. It was the worst food I think I have ever had. The burger was served in two finger rolls joined together, no word of apology if they had in fact run out of burger buns, the hotdog was barely edible and the salad was grim, the wedges were raw and sent back but returned to us just as raw when they were initially and full of oil. Most disappointing as we had been looking forward to trying it out after seeing recommendations on Facebook. Unfortunately we won't go back...

Their is no website, the phone wasn't answered and when we turned up outside the sign said it was open but it was locked up. Not sure what's going on.

Dinner for Four; Menu OK, welcome a little brusque but fine (nowhere to hang coats, hats) but questions were not welcomed - "What does the burger come with?" - Blank - "Nothing, just chips" - In fact there were pickles (unwanted) which was the point of the q, also salad and bacon. "Could we have the wine list please?" : "No, we don't have one - what do you want, red or white?" (!!) "Red?" - "There's Merlot, Rioja, Shiraz..." (Reels of a list of six; no countries, no descriptions and no prices.) THIS IS A WINE BAR & RESTAURANT! (The glassware is seriously tired, milky from the dishwasher, which initially conceals the fact they're skimping on the detergent)

Thought we’d try Scholars as I had seen it advertised on a local Facebook page, and we live fairly local. We arrived at lunchtime and both had sandwiches, sausage and onion and egg and bacon, with a side of fries both served with salad garnish on a slate tile. Both were delicious. Red wine and a cappuccino. The coffee wasn’t really a cappuccino just filter frothed up a bit. Really enjoyed our lunch, somewhere a bit different, and we plan to try breakfast soon and a cream tea in the garden area. Though not on the same day !

We visit Scholars regularly because we enjoy the food they serve. Over the bank holiday we decided to treat ourselves to one of their “Tea Tails” for the first time and felt thoroughly spoilt. It consisted of a lovely selection of finger sandwiches, delicious canapés, cream meringues and loads of fresh strawberries. We chose a tequila sunrise Tea Tail which arrived in a tea pot. It was a sunny afternoon and it was lovely sat outside in the warmth of their walled garden.

We were taken to this Restaurant by friends recently and immediately hit by the whole place the owners have done a fantastic job in keeping the school room theme that took us back in time , we ordered our food on arrival and sat in the bar while it was prepared which was not very long, everyone enjoyed there food which was hot very tasty and nicely presented , we were very well looked after by the owner, chef and all the staff , I am glad that we live within 10 miles of Scholars and are looking forward to many visits in the future,

Second visit to this establishment/ clearly the Chef can not only deliver great food but is totally dedicated to his cause. I had the homemade garlic mushrooms, beautiful sauce not overstated accompanied with the grilled goats cheese brioche / the “crispy seaweed” was an awesome tasty garnish ask the chef you’ll be be in for a great surprise) was the best ever. My partner had cod and fries and obviously a homemade tartre sauce / again simple/tasty/fresh - has to be in my opinion one of the best value and tastiest food venues around in miles - back on Tuesday

We've spent many years holidaying in St Ives , and eaten in most of the restaurants, this place is now one of our favourites. It can be a bit tricky being gluten free and vegan ...and husband not , to find somewhere that both of us are happy to eat at ! Here fits the bill perfectly. Lots of tasty , fresh dishes to choose from , and incredibly friendly staff. Highly recommend. X

Very nice up market hotel a converted grandhouse. Beautiful. architecture interiors designed to match. It was a very comfortable stay, well appointed room. Lots of parking, does have that "no lift" issue, be aware the upper floors could be a problem. The restaurant was solid, but pretty limited menu. Standard breakfast included, cooked to order. Solid local option.Wi fi secure.

First time we have been here for Sunday Roast. Was a bit dubious. But, I was proved completely wrong. Had the poussin, gorgeous, so were triple cooked toasties, cauliflower and broccoli cheese, glazed carrots, I could go on. Now waiting for creme Brule. Oh, the Juggling Jem cocktail was scrumptious as well. Brilliant atmosphere as well. Well done guys!
