This is a review for the Old Forge as the Scarlet restaurant is no more, although the excellent wine shop remains. The new ‘Old Forge’ adds another excellent restaurant in the Hayle area. We have had two lunches here as a couple and had an excellent experience on both occasions. We have had different pizzas, soups, another main course and desserts. All were of great quality with exemplary service. The coffee is great and the wine list looks good. It is open for breakfast and will open for dinner in March. It is to be highly recommended if this early experience is anything to go by.

On arrival were sat in a lovely area with a low ceiling and a glowing log burner. This is not my first time to the eatery. The drinks were promptly taken and we were given a a local coffee and tea to drink from a pot !The breakfast was very lovely and well cooked.Poached eggs on sour dough toast with spinach, a superb baked egg dish with chorizo and home made potato hash cake with poached eggs.Superb service and well worth experience to be had.Let’s hope the new owners can keep the same standard as this is a gem in Cornwall and often we get ripped off !

First and last time to scarletsMenu was very small, but what I did order-flat bread and chips-was nice,Coffee was lovely,as were the other drinksBut we were all pretty disgusted at the fact that when we rang to enquire about taking a tiny cake with a candle in we were told that we would have to pay £10 to do so.Of all the places we have been to And have worked I have never heard of the establishment charging for you to take a cake. When I asked why I was told that because they would be missing out on a potential 7 dessert orders they would want £10...even though we were planning on ordering starters, mains, desserts and drinks (the cake was a gift cake to be taken away after).Once I explained that we were told it was ok,but out of principal we declined. To be quite honest,I’ve never heard of anyone charging for it,but £10 is appalling, secondly,if you are going to charge surly don’t say it’s because you’re going to be losing out on ordersWe were going to cancel the booking altogether but thought we would give the place a chance. But due to the lack of choice and pricing we ended up deciding not to order starters and only 3 had dessert. It was nice, but difficult to park, especially for disabled customers, and not worth the prices.

We went here after doing some shopping at the garden centre just across the road. Great little place with quality food, a cool atmosphere with quirky music and funky art. Stunning selection of wine. It’s small and personal, but still big enough to cater for around 30 people. We got chatting with the staff who were friendly and informative yet they didn’t pester us and allowed us to have our meal in private. The food was top notch, really delicious, seriously some of the best I’ve had in a long time. We sat outside in the courtyard after eating and had drinks in the evening sun, listening to the birds. Scarlets is just opposite the estuary so many rare species to be found nearby. I was really impressed with the prices for such a high quality of food and wine. We will definitely be coming here again.

The atmosphere at Scarlet was welcoming, the service was good - we were left to our own devices and not pushed or harried in any way. The food was tasty and the wine we picked complemented what we ate really well. The menu was nicely varied offering such delights as pea and ham hock soup, halloumi fries and a variety of pizza toppings; we chose n'duja which was lovely.

We were staying local and decided to stop in here one evening for a meal, seeing as it was less than a 5 minute walk from our accommodation. While the restaurant was full, they were able to accomodate 4 adults and 2 children. We had a selection of different pizza's and some of the tapas dishes. The food was fresh and very tasty, especially the calamari and the tomato and walnut dishes. The children's food was enjoyed, although the sausage was a little spicy for the little fella. There was a great selection of wines and different ciders available, all of which were well enjoyed. However, the relaxed atmosphere and laid back service is what we really enjoyed about the evening. We also went back a couple of times for some different wines as there is a great selection on offer, along with some more unusual offeringsOverall, I highly recommend visiting for the wines, food or just a coffee

We have been coming to Scarlets for some years now whenever we are in St Ives or Lelant and have always really enjoyed the food especially the delicious flatbreads. The menu has unfortunately changed and now offers a limited choice of pizzas and some tapas type dishes. We can’t comment on the pizzas as that wasn’t what we wanted (although people who did order them seemed to enjoy them) but we did enjoy a selection of the tapas dishes which were tasty but worked out a little expensive. If in the immediate area it’s still worth a visit but as so may other places do pizzas it’s probably no longer worth a special journey.

We visited this restaurant on Wednesday evening after checking open times on web, however they were closed that evening! We visited again on Friday evening and was greeted with very friendly staff who immediately accommodated us, although excellent service we were disappointed with choices in the menu as apart from seafood and a very spicy option all the pizza we’re vegetarian, we are meat eaters, we had to pay extra to have prosciutto added to a very boring margarita pizza.

Really enjoyed the food here but also the honesty of the service. They were busy and told us when we arrived that they wouldn’t be able to put our order through until the kitchen had caught up. This was absolutely fine - we were happy to wait because we had been told it was happening! That said, our food arrived very promptly after ordering and we thoroughly enjoyed all of it. We loved the flatbreads and the chips were to die for! Fabulous selection of drinks to choose from too. Came here on recommendation. Great little wine shop though we came for lunch. Had the flatbreads, one with chicken, other with falafel, and two salads. All very tasty - a perfect lunch. Good value. Nice atmosphere and relaxed friendly staff. Good low level background music - Van Morrison, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell sort of stuff, though this probably changes depending on the clientele! We were driving but we parked in the station carpark across the way so I presume you could have a good lunch with a bottle of wine here and use the train from St Ives? Whatever you do, I'm sure you'll enjoy it!

We went here for breakfast and my fiancé ordered the big breakfast which was expensive at around £10. I had poached eggs on toast with mushrooms. We waited about 25 minutes for our food. Stopped to meet an old friend who was late showing. But the cafe was well worth the stop. Easy to miss just off the main road to St Ives it’s both a wine shop and a cafe. The menu is not the standard tourist fare which is really refreshing / great (after 4 day’s in Cornwall it seems all the other local chefs have a similar idea of what to offer visitors) and my meal here was really tasty. Service was a little self centred for my taste but that could have been attributable to my poor humour on the day rather than a true reflection. So before you dive into the delights of St Ives stop here!

I visited Scarlett's for the first time today for a leisurely holiday brunch. There was a vegan (me), a vegetarian and two meat eaters. We were all catered for with fabulous cooked breakfasts. The vegan breakfast was perfect- home-made baked beans, a mouth watering hash brown....it definitely hit the spot! They also had oat milk for coffees which gets them extra bonus points from me. A visit to Scarlet Wines for dinner is something my wife and I look forward to every time we stay in the St Ives area. We ate there again last Friday (23rd March 2018) and had a fantastic meal. We ordered both the seafood platter and the meat platter, with a side order of halloumi fries. The food was fantastic and beautifully presented, lots of different colours and flavours. We couldn't decide what red wine to choose so the waitress gave us a little taster of the four reds on the wine list. They were all good and we would have been happy with any of them, but if we hadn't, Scarlet have a large selection of many other wines available. Our "pudding compartments" ensured we still had room for deserts and we chose the Eton mess and chocolate pudding -both were excellent. We can't wait to come back !

The flatbreads are delicious and make a perfect meal on their own although there are sides to choose from if you are really hungry. Also an excellent choice of wines as you can choose from the well stocked deli area and just pay corkage. Breakfast set us up for the long drive home. We wanted to try somewhere different as we were fed up going over to my family in Helston for Wetherspoons or Table Table, though Wheal Dream is good but Scarlet Wines was on another level! We went for 2 courses for £17 which was about a fiver more than Table Table but boy oh boy was that fiver worth it! Had to be one of the best Squid starters I have had beautiful cooked squid with a lovely refreshing Salsa. I had pork for main which had a lovely flavours and lovely fresh veg cooked just right for me, plus some nice crispy taties. My wife had the Lamb which was also lovely with minimal fat. For some reason we haven't visited here for a year of so, so we thought we'd call in for a couple of very decent bottles of wine a fortnight ago - and we weren't disappointed either! -- This is basically a wine shop with a restaurant and deli attached. The wines are world class and cover an amazing area of wine growing areas -- so yes, we spent sometime over that, helped in no small measure by the hugely helpful advice "on tap" . In fact, so impressed were we stayed for Tapas in the sunshine. Nothing was too much trouble for these guys, I thought I'd try an Austrian wine I'd never heard of and was impressed, but the waiter suggested to try it chilled - he promptly chilled a glass and poured me some just to see the point he was making (it was superb) - I like wine, but I'm no wine-buff, so really appreciated the time and effort this guy put in . We left after a thoroughly enjoyable lunch on the patio with our dogs (who are very welcome there) and after buying a bottle of this Austrian wine, we immediately decided to go back the following Sunday for Breakfast --- which was equally superb, and probably the best cooked breakfast I've ever had out. -- A great experience, very novel, very friendly,, excellent food and superb wine to match - what more could you want... yes we are going back next week too!

The waitress and waiter were very nice and kind and the food took no time to come, which was perfect because it is always annoying when you're waiting for your food for ages. I had the squid to start which was just indescribably good. Overall impression was that we enjoyed it and I'd definitely recommend it, despite the bad reviews!

After Wedding Vow Renewal of our daughter and son-in-law in St Ives and not having booked a meal nearby we stopped here as it was still open and serving food (or so we thought) they seated us (and there where 11 of us), took our order for drinks and then for food, yes it was only a small menu, and between us I think we had it all, but it was delicious and well cooked. The service was excellent and the desserts where to die for. 10/10 a bit off the main route in and out of St Ives but well worth it.

We were a party of 5 out for a birthday lunch. First overall impressions of Scarlets were lovely, although a limited menu. The waitress serving us on the day was nice and polite but I personally do not think its fitting or appropriate to be wearing shorts while waiting on tables.Food was great. The only down side was one of our party ordered dessert and had the misfortune of being given gone off cream! Plus the another waiters attitude to one of us when asking if they served 'couvoisier brandy' had no idea what it was! and was very rude to her. So we payed our bill and went Trevaskis Farm for coffee and cakes :)

Had been looking forward to eating here as had been led to think the food would be special, it wasn't. Limited menu. I had the Hake and it was just ok. Not sure if it was chefs day off (Tuesday) but it wasn't restaurant standard. My wife ordered a small Seafood platter and when our's (party of 4 on a not very busy day) arrived, had to wait as they had prepared a cheese platter. The Seafood platter was lacking in quality and was very uninteresting (looked like a few leftovers). Thankfully the sun was shinning and the company, like the wine, sparkled. Sadly won't be going here again.

My wife and I visited Scarlets for Sunday lunch at the end of May whilst on holiday and staying in Lelant. It was recommended in the information pack in the house where we were staying and also had good reviews on Trip Advisor.Well we must have chosen a very bad day to visit as the service was very poor but more importantly the food was awful. We both ordered lamb and were served two large portions of fat. My wife could not eat any of hers and I could find very little meat that was edible. In addition, the vegetables were cold.I appreciate that there are a large amount of very good reviews for this establishment and our experience may have been the exception to the rule but I will leave it for you to decide for yourself but in our case, we will not be back.

Just back from this little gem of a place situated opposite Lelant Saltings (St Ives park and ride) what a great find not only is it a lovely little deli and wine shop but it also does great food in the form of breakfast lunch and dinner. Our choices tonight where olives, very nice, followed by squid and beetroot and feta salad, very tasty then Parmesan and rocket salad, herby rice, another squid dish and the lamb and mint kofta all where really nice well cooked and obviously freshly made even the flatbread was home made finished off our meal with Eton Mess and Chocolate Nemesis Cake this was served warm with vanilla ice cream and candid orange peel delicious !!!! Ignore the comments about being over priced you get what you pay for as they say would definitely recommend you give this place a try but make sure you book a table especially of an evening even during the week

We are here three times during our holiday as it was walking distance to us. Consistently good food, friendly staff and cosy surroundings. Really enjoyed our breakfast too. A little on the pricey side, but worth it in my opinion. Would have liked to see more vegetarian options but what was on offer was very nice. Staff were very accommodating when we mentioned my partners hazelnut allergy. One thing to mention was that they did seem short staffed every time we went there, but managed to provide good service considering. We will definitely be back in a year or two!

Scarlets has a simple tapas lunch menu which is tasty although the prices are a bit on the high side. We walked over from St Ives and settled in for a nice meal. Our waitress was friendly and helped to create a nice atmosphere for us. Unfortunately there was then a mix up with the meals and I was served meat that I do not eat. She apologised and knocked off half a starter but afterwards it made me feel rather uncomfortable as I had had some of the koftas when I had ordered falafel. Fortunately I do not have an allergy but really the kitchen should take more care. We'll probably go back next time we are in the area as the food is usually good and we love the wine selection.

Tried it for dinner. We had the seafood platter to share as a starter and it was very good. Main course we had hake but it came with a curry sauce which was too overpowering. We also had the chicken tagine with preserved lemin which I've had in many other places but I thought this was inedible so I sent it back and asked for the hake instead which I never got. My opinion is that the chef is experimenting too much and is a bit out of his depth. Both the main courses were lost in other flavours.

The vegetarian breakfast and full English breakfast were excellent. The coffee was not great, too weak for my taste. Service a little slow.

We love this cafe, it's slightly off the beaten track but well worth a visit. The menu is full of good healthy and scrummy options- We chose flatbreads with cod / falafel and were very pleased. Along side local tea and cider. It's hard to put into words but the food is great quality, fresh, authentic and very tasty. With a great choice of beer/ cider/ wineAnd to top it off, there's a lovely deli where you can get your hands on some local high quality produce.Top walk tip- walk along the beautiful unspoilt dog friendly Porthkidney beach from the Carbis bay end.... Walk Through Lelant.... To the scarlet deli...And then get the train from lelant saltines back to Carbis bay ( probably allow 1.5 hours) If you don't fancy that and can't be doing with driving, get the return train from st Ives to lelant saltines.....it's just a 5 min walk from the station

Visited for breakfast, lunch and cake over the last few months-all spot on, very tasty and clearly high quality ingredients. Always try to drop in when I'm in the area and very handy for the range of wines and spirits available.

Food here is very good and have been a few times, but this time I felt misled on the price. One course lunch was £12 with veg, but one option did not mention veg although not so clear. Waitress asked if wanted veg and said yes, charged an extra £7! Apparently 2 small bowls at £3.50 each. Odd as well that the meal that came with veg had cauliflower on plate of meat and also cauliflower was served a different way in the veg selection with that meal.I'll be avoiding for lunch in future. The evening meals are excellent and I have not come across this charging issue before. £19 for a fish Sunday lunch seems well into area of poor value. Perhaps because it is tourist time. Staff were dismissive when issue raised.

I have been frequenting Scarlet's for the last 5 years and they have always produced great food (breakfast, lunch and dinner) and have a great selection of wines, at very reasonable prices. If you are used to good food, you will be hard pressed to find a decent restaurant like this. Wish they would get the white crab cakes with chilli jam back on the menu, absolutely amazing!

We called here following a recommendation from a member of staff in our hotel - we only had coffee and cake but I can honestly say it was the best banoffee cake I have ever had. Apparently the chocolate cake is superb as well, so we will have to go back again to see for ourselves. Wish we had had more time to look round the shop and its excellent selection of wines, as well as ciders and beers - a lovely delicatessen in a very unusual place. The staff were very friendly and from what we could see of meals going out to other customers, the menu is a good one. Another reviewer talks about weird coffee - couldn't fault ours.

We were traveling through Cornwall and needed somewhere to eat a quick meal. this looked appealing and turned up to be a very good find. Charming efficient service, quaint decor and extremely fresh food very well cooked. We ended up buying wine from their extensive range as well as some unusual Sicilian dry cured ham and sausages. Will certainly go back..

Haven't eaten there, just coffee and a teacake. Atmosphere lovely. Went there a few times a year or so backing the winter and there was a roaring multi fuel burner going strong. The last time I went I couldn't drink the coffee at all, and noticed quite a few places seem to be serving the same coffee which is awful. This isn't a slur on the restaurant as I can see how good it is, just the coffee, a pale weak brown with a weird after taste. I did mention it as I left but the person I spoke to didn't seem to think it was any different but wasn't sure. Anyway, haven't been back since, but apart from that I've no qualms about it at all. Not eaten there though.

This Wine, local & Deli shop provides a comfortable, quaint and interesting place to eat. The menu is structured and unusual providing excellent choice of what they do well. They provide super house wines or the ability to choose a wine from their shelves with a reasonable corkage charge. The advice and friendly interaction comes free. I wouldn't eat here every night, but once a week would be good.

We found Scarlet Wines a few years ago on our annual pilgrimage to Cornwall and have become loyal devotees ever since. Our recent yearly visit (19 Feb16 - 29 Feb16), once again, confirmed this wine shop, cafe and deli as one of the top eateries in the south west. (If you live close to this superb, independently run venture we envy you!) On this particular trip our self-catering accommodation was woefully lacking in WiFi and meant regular trips to Scarlet's for their (free WiFi) delicious coffee and home-made cake to catch up on emails etc. We booked in for an evening meal and were delighted with the mezzo-style gastro-ensemble that they created for us. We were so impressed that we booked for Sunday lunch and were certainly not disappointed. Oh, if only all Sunday lunches could taste (and look) like this! Each visit to Scarlet's only seems to confirm our belief in this amazing establishment. Truly a 10/10 experience.

An excellent oasis away from the general riff-raff that is Penzance. The menu is pricey, but worth it. Lovely cosy and intimate ambience, and the Romanian girl from Spain is utterly charming in her own staid and sassy way. The other staff are wonderfully bubbly and exuberant and know what they’re doing. Food-wise, I’d recommend the tiger prawns, as they are delightfully chewy and fresh and served piping-hot off a master skillet. I wouldn’t order a vegetarian dish, since chefs these days don’t like cooking vegetarian entrées. So a turf or surf dish would be an ideal choice. The cuisine is casual-gourmet with a nouveau inspiration, though the portions are more generous here than what you’d get at a nouveau venue. One to return to time and time again!

Second visit to this attractive cafe that sits behind one of the main carparks on/near the towans. We chatted outside as they got ready to open and then found a comfy seat inside with a great view. Ordering was easy, the menu is small but has something for everyone and they also cooked us a dish not on the menu which I always find is the mark of hospitality and good customer service. Food was fresh, hot and the St Ewe eggs were delicious!
