The hotel is beautiful but we have just eaten in the sister hotel Bedrethun Steps and it was extremely disappointing so has tarnished our whole trip. All three courses of the set restaurant meal were pretentious and not particularly nice so we both felt that we were eating for the sake of it and had to order chips to bulk up the offering Wish we had gone to the pub for quarter of the price.

What a fabulous place. The food, wine and ambience were all excellent. Actually better than that. We ate so well there, we cancelled a reservation we had at another venue in order to go again the next night. The menu is well chosen and brilliantly executed, The wine list is interesting and sensibly priced. We loved this place and will be back.

Myself and my partner just returned from here after a short stay. What can I say about this hotel, it was absolutely lovely. Our room had the most fantastic sea view and the bed was amazing! Nothing is too much trouble here for any of the staff. All staff I spoke to were very friendly and helpful, and that gave a really nice informal feel whilst still maintaining high levels of professionalism. We used the pool and Spa area and it is the perfect place for a getaway. Very close to Mawgan porth beach via their own access to the coastal path. I do know that they are currently renovating the hotel slowly but I did pick up on a few things which surprised me for the price paid. Not a dig at all at the hotel but if they are reading this you need to pay attention to the cleanliness around the pool side. The bottoms of the windows have a lot of cobwebs and dead flies etc, if I'm paying what I am paying this is noticeable! In the changing areas most of the valuable lockers did not work.. And the plaster on the ceilings is cracked, again not major but at the price bracket it is unexpected and tarnishes the overall feel of luxury and high end hotel. We were staying in room 15 and in general the room was really nice, there was however quite a large stain on the wall near the door oddly, again noticeable. Also I was quite surprised that when my partner accidentally hit the poolside emergency buzzer no one came!... At all.... If there was a genuine emergency what would happen? Again this is by no means a negative review, we loved the Scarlet but if I notice the small details then more of your guests will and I really want the scarlet to carry on being the go to hotel.

We did the seven course tasting menu with wine pairings. Food generally very good, loved the monkfish/masala dish and the pork loin. Other than the crab ravioli, pretty carb light, which I liked. Found the dessert pistachio/meringue/ raspberry tart a let down, just not the right balance, sugar overload- and I have huge sweet tooth. Enjoyed each of the other six courses though! Each course immaculately presented! Decent wine pairings, included some unusual wines. Delivered in a bit of a theatrical insincere manner though (by a sommelier who clearly knew his wines but could barely make eye contact) and overall service a bit clunky, although the waitress was smiley and cheerful and inoffensive. For example, expect to be offered choice of sparkling or still water, whereas still was on our table and no choice offered. Bread plates whipped away when I hadn't finished my bread. At the end of our evening (before 10pm) we had strong 'drink up and go' vibes from the waitress who was methodically cleaning the other tables around us. Oh, and tap in ladies bathroom quite hard to operate which was annoying (me plus two others struggled). Very pleased to be seated by the window, and nice to have a pre-dinner drink on the terrace. I'd recommend if you are staying in area, but probably wouldn't go again, or recommend travelling a long way. We had a lovely evening

We had the tasting menu with wine flight as a treat and it blew our minds so we did it all again the following day! The menu and wines the next day were different and they try to source both food and wine locally so we had really excellent Cornish wines where possible. A huge thank you to all the restaurant staff in particular Jack the chef who is some sort of wizard in that kitchen. Also a particular mention for lovely Alex for our first wine flight - you are such a star in the making , and then to Ernest whose love and knowledge of wine just floored us. And finally to Andrea who steers this wonderful ship with such love and care.

We visited the Scarlet Hotel Restaurant whilst staying in Mawgan Porth. We were a bit early so had cocktails on their large terrace overlooking the bay, a perfect place to sip delicious drinks while waiting for dinner. We had chosen the 3 course ‘Seasons’ menu. Starters were: Crab Raviolo in the most delicious sauce. I asked for a spoon as I didn’t want to leave any sauce behind. Steak tartar that had a wonderful texture and rich unctuous taste. Mains: We went with the sharing Côte de Bœuf, the meat was perfection on a plate. Beautifully rendered fat with a fabulous seared exterior and juicy tender interior, so delicious. It was accompanied by a Caesar salad with wonderful anchovies and skin on fries. Simply outstanding. Desserts were a 3 cheese board and a Pistachio tartlet with raspberry & meringue. A truly wonderful meal with great service.

We just got back from the 3 night spa break. The setting of the hotel and view over mawgan porth is incredible. However, the high point is undoubtedly the food and drink. Enormous thank you to Nick, the best sommelier we’ve ever encountered, who has curated a brilliant wine menu and who led us on a brilliant Cornish wine tasting. The 7 course tasting menu was one of the best we have ever had (if not, the best!) and another huge thank you to Adam for making the evening so special. I’m taking off one star for the spa. I think for a spa and wellness hotel it’s standard to have an indoor hot tub so it was a shame this wasn’t there (you have to pay for 30 mins use of the outdoor one). The two pools are lightly heated or not heated at all so without a hot tub there is not a place to relax in a prolonged way. Nevertheless, I’d still highly recommend coming to the hotel and this beautiful part of the world and the food and wine was spectacular!

I’ve been fortunate enough to visit the scarlet multiple times across all seasons. Always appreciating it for its sense of calm, beautiful views and the feeling of being in a house rather than a large hotel. The food this time round was unreal. I ate breakfast , lunch and dinner for three nights and every plate was faultless . However, on every occasion i ate ( bar one ) an item was forgotten and the whole breakfast order was forgotten on day two, this was a little frustrating. Especially with the food carrying a high price tag with a juicy service charge on the bill. Treatments were good but in my opinion if 15/20 mins of an hour massage are going to be taken up with chat about indian massage philosophy this should be made clear , if your booking an hour massage you want a hours massage, right? Truly gutted re’ the house being built infront , disruption from the builders was minimal but wow - murders the view . thank you for a lovely visit

I guess mildly disappointed would be my overall theme for our experience of the 7 course menu. Don't get me wrong, I thought the food was good but not "that" good, especially for the price. I found most of the dishes were over salted for my taste (it went way beyond mere seasoning) and my wife, as often the case, found the vegetarian option sadly lacking in both quality and imagination. I certainly had the better meal....And what's with the food being served on a bed of conifer trimmings and bits of slate? Its the twenty-first century. Did you really need to go back there? The ambience of the restaurant suggests something very somber and serious, yet the decor is reminiscent of slightly austere and gothic Frankie & Benny's from the mid '90s. The conclusion that my wife and I came to is that given that as the restaurant is in Morgan Porth, it's catering for a certain type of captive client who is down from London to visit their investment property on the coast for the weekend. On that level it hits the bill perfectly as you probably won't notice the prices and and expect anywhere outside Kensington to be a little "dated" anyway.

In all honesty hugely overrated. Not much to do in the spa, in the sense that on a cold day there is only an indoor pool and steam room. There is a sauna but it’s tiny and all the way outdoors. The hotel decor is trying to hard, it’s best described as kitch. Instead of blending with a natural sea theme it’s this hideous mish mash of cheap looking fabric. The restaurant food is good but again the decor is trying to hard. It takes away from the natural charm of the sea. It’s this Eastern European type of kitch luxury. I felt like I was in Poland by a sea hotel rather than a luxury hotel. Overall the price I paid wasn’t worth it. The sound of the ocean at night in bed was the only real highlight for us

We tried the wine tasting experience at the Scarlet and were really impressed. All the wines were from local Cornish vineyards, and we got to try a great variety, including white and rose sparkling, white, and a couple of reds. The tasting portions were generous and we thought it was good value for money. The sommelier Jess was extremely knowledge about all the wines, and answered all our questions, but also left us with plenty of time to try each tasting. The Scarlet bar is so comfortable and atmospheric, and we had our own table for the tasting, so the whole experience was so relaxing and enjoyable. And you don’t have to be a resident to book in! I was lucky to have a voucher as a 60th Birthday treat for a champagne afternoon tea at Scarlets. We were greeted by friendly staff who made us feel very welcome. Amazing views from the restaurant and although the weather was changeable it was beautiful. The afternoon tea was well presented and very filling! (You have the option to take some home if you can't finish it all) The only thing I would have preferred was to have a choice of sandwich fillings rather than wasting the ones neither of us liked from the set menu. Our favourite part was the cream tea. Lovely Birthday treat.

We booked this by phone. My birthday weekend, special event, gluten free, allergic to cheese etc. The hotel had been recommended and we were looking forward to our afternoon tea. Arrived well and ready to enjoy ourselves. On arrival we confirmed g/f etc and pointed out it was a birthday occasion. We ordered drinks. After 20 minutes we were told the menu was incorrect and crab brioche was replaced by ham sandwiches. We then watched someone return their afternoon tea twice. Pots of tea arrived but not the drinks! Then the Gluten free afternoon tea arrived followed by the other afternoon tea some 5-10 minutes later. At some stage after this the drinks finally arrived and we did not drink them. Each afternoon tea contained 3 finger sandwiches only. I ate the macaron which was incredible sweet. I didn’t feel too well but wasn’t sure why. Added to this a person on another table who was g/f was asked if it was their birthday and handed a happy birthday plate much to their surprise. Nothing for me. We decided to leave the shambles and were not charged for the drinks since we did not drink them! The waiter apologised on behalf of himself not the hotel? We told the person upstairs when collecting our car keys it had been dreadful and left. I felt ill all the way home, bloated, in pain and feeling sick. Our friends were waiting for us but I ended up drinking water and going to bed early rather than our evening plans. The whole weekend was ruined. My food had obviously been contaminated and we have written to the hotel but have had no reply. I would not go here if you have any allergies. It completely ruined my birthday and I find it inexcusable.

For an expensive meal, we hoped for better.... But the cardinal sin of reserving as non meat eaters, confirming when arriving and being told the only fish dish can be tailored for non meat eaters...only to be served the meat dish was appauling. When complaint was made both dishes were removed and fresh dishes returned minutes the meat. No alternative offered. Which makes an expensive meal ever worse value. If a dish is altered for non meat eaters alternatives should be offered instead of simply removed. To have one non meat dish with those eco credentials is criminal Staff looked messy, untidy and uncomfortable. Starters and wine I can't fault. Desserts, a carrot cake was stale.

Well - we never expected that after reading all the high praise and awards for the Scarlet. Yes - the location is lovely, and the staff friendly. A few of the staff looked a little uncomfortable in their attire, but hey ho it's 'trendy'. We had a voucher - £75 for 2 persons and the champagne afternoon tea. Nice table - good champagne, although the bottle had probably been open for quite a while (a little flat). On pouring my tea I noticed my cup had a huge crack in it - yeah for sure it happens, but someone should check these things. Sandwiches and cakes arrive on a nice stand - all looking lovely. My wife didn't like a couple of the sandwiches, but that's ok as I normally clean them up and then just ask for a refill of the sandwiches that were enjoyed. Finished the round of sandwiches and asked if we could have some more - a friendly waiter quickly said 'sorry that's not possible as the sandwiches are made for the number of afternoon tea guests'! Oh... That's a first and pretty disappointing. The cakes were ok, but the pear cake was undercooked and stodgy. BUT! The absolute worst scones ever presented. Honestly they were awful and didn't deserve being on the plate. We didn't eat any of them - overworked and undercooked with a strange flavour. We did share this with the waitress who took them away - actually asked if we wanted some more lol! I mean seriously... According the the chef - we had a bad batch and they were not good. Thanks for that! I would have liked to have been offered something here, but nothing. Oh well! Yep... Awful! How can you be in Cornwall and not be able to offer scones???? Answers on a postcard eh!

We stayed at the Scarlet for 8 nights and ate in the restaurant on 4 evenings. This is the weakest part of the operation. Firstly the menu which changes nightly actually changes very little from one night to the next which becomes tedious after 2 meals. The staff are pleasant and helpful doing their best to engage with customers behind masks but their was a lack of leadership and management which made the operation feel amateur. Finally the decor. While the rest of the hotel still looks fresh 10 years since opening the restaurant looks very dated an tired and lacks any kind of atmosphere. This needs improvement given it’s an adults only and fairly expensive operation

Superb ingredients, very nicely cooked and presented, lots of locally sourced produce including many of the drinks. Excellent service. The restaurant faces the Atlantic so is illuminated by summer sunsets.

Super food and husband loved the wine flight! The staff were very knowledgeable about the menu and attentive in terms of service. It was busy so booking highly recommended and allow time to have a drink in their lovely bar area too. We stayed in hotel so had a beautiful breakfast too.

Thoughtfully sourced produce, creatively cooked. Every meal we have had here has been delicious. The sommelier is a delight - clearly passionate and knowledgable about the wines served. Finally the views are heavenly.

The menu is good with a variety of choices, the quality of the food is very good and they can give wine recommendations to go with the food, There is also a 'wine flight' menus where you can have recommended wines with each course. Our only perhaps less than fantastic point is that sometimes the vegetables were rather to Al dente ! Prices are quite expensive but not unreasonable for high quality. This is a special occasion restaurant rather than a regular eatery.

10 friends in a private room. Staff were brilliant especially Jim the sommelier who joined in with great choices of reds. Food stood up to the test and halibut with crab risotto was a firm favourite.

A friend and I recently booked in for afternoon tea. It had been a while since I had visited and stayed at The Scarlet but the hotel was just as good as ever and the afternoon tea didn't disappoint.

This restaurant is missing some elements, which was realised when we were escorted to the beautifully laid out bar area. The beverages on offer are somewhat limited, and how you can stock prosecco but not have any chambord, I’m not sure.

Just returned from a wonderful birthday Sunday lunch at the Scarlet restaurant. We were lucky enough to have a table by the window that took in the wonderful views of Mawgan Porth beach. Normally Mrs P and I chat away during our meal however the views of enormous waves breaking against the bay were so mesmerising that we watched the scenery it was spectacular.

Visited The Scarlet for afternoon tea today with my husband and it was really lovely. We are on holiday in Cornwall, so we had searched for a place serving a good afternoon tea, and this did not disappoint. The service was excellent, and as we were the only people in the restaurant at the time, it was nice to not be forgotten about! We were offered replenishments of both food and tea (from the outset), which was very nice to see, especially with the food. The view from the restaurant was also pretty spectacular, even on a slightly grey day! I’d definitely recommend and would come back again if we are back in Cornwall!

We decided to pop in since we were in Cornwall and my hubby wanted to see how much the area had changed in 30 years. We had a cream tea which was fabulous. The staff were very helpful and the view was fantastic.

This place is amazing, the staff are super friendly and welcoming, they all seem to enjoy their job which makes there interaction feel really genuine. We went here for Sunday lunch, the hotel has the most amazing views from all the public areas and the decor is fantastic with lots of really beautiful pieces of artwork on display. We had the set 2 course lunch which at just over £22 was great value. I had the venison ragu and my friend has the beetroot salad, to be honest the ragu as a starter was probably a bit too much, there was plenty of it and it tasted divine. The salad was lovely and fresh. We both had the roast beef which was huge, wish I hadn’t had that starter. The beef was beautifully cooked and tender and it was served with enormous Yorkshire puddings and crispy roast potatoes. Veg on the side was delicious red cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower cheese in little copper pots. We had no room for desserts but you could have 3 courses if you wish. My only gripe it that the two glasses of rose wine cost as much as the 2 course meal, I thought £11 for a glass of wine was a bit steep! However overall it was a lovely lunch

Unfortunately we didn't get a chance to dine in the restaurant for dinner (my fault for not reserving in advance! Reservations definitely needed, this place is very popular!) but we did have a delicious breakfast there and ordered some very tasty room service while staying at the hotel itself.

My room included breakfast and a 3-course dinner each day. I enjoyed two cod preparations, both different, both excellent. The Cornish crab starter was delicious. The first night, I chose the wine pairing (an excellent value) and enjoyed the main course wine so much I had it the next night. There were many choices.

The Scarlet menu is as perfect as the hotel. Whilst not the cheapest restaurant the menu changes daily and uses local seasonal produce. Samphire off the cliff path (on the day of our departure the Chef it only showed me the location but vac-packed some for me to take home.

Had lunch with family. Not impressed by dogs being allowed in the outside eating area. It was well behaved, that wasn't the issue. I just don't like the idea of dogs being allowed in a place like the Scarlet. To add insult to injury, one of the waitresses patted the dog. She may or may not have then gone to wash her hands but I didn't see her do that. I doubt she did!

Admittedly the staff here can be a little touch and go, but this aside, the restaurant has sunset views to die for and utterly delicious restaurant quality food, with a healthy and indulgent daily changing menu. I ate here many times during my stay in Cornwall and the food was always second to none.

If I could give this a score of 2.5 I would. At my suggestion, a party of four of went to Scarlets for afternoon tea (two of us with champagne) on 17th May 2018, which was to celebrate a joint birthday and wedding anniversary. We live locally and have been to Scarlets a number of times previously: lunch, afternoon tea and dinner, but our most recently visit was SO disappointing. As always, the staff and surroundings were superb, but the food left a lot to be desired. There were just three small finger sandwiches each, and the fillings were desultory and uninspiring (I am vegetarian and, for some reason, one of our party also had to have vegetarian too, why?), the scones were hard and stale (definitely not freshly made, seemed to have come out of the freezer), and the tiny chou pastry buns with minute amounts of chocolate filling were dry and unappetising. I was upset, embarrassed and mortified as the choice of venue had been made by me, but I didn’t want to complain and spoil the afternoon's celebrations. There are other top-end places we could have gone to instead. Afternoon tea at Scarlets is not cheap and the experience left a bitter taste. The standard left a lot to be desired and was definitely not what we have come to expect. I felt I had to apologise to our guests all the way home.

An excellent oasis away from the general riff-raff that is Penzance. The menu is pricey, but worth it. Lovely cosy and intimate ambience, and the Romanian girl from Spain is utterly charming in her own staid and sassy way. The other staff are wonderfully bubbly and exuberant and know what they’re doing. Food-wise, I’d recommend the tiger prawns, as they are delightfully chewy and fresh and served piping-hot off a master skillet. I wouldn’t order a vegetarian dish, since chefs these days don’t like cooking vegetarian entrées. So a turf or surf dish would be an ideal choice. The cuisine is casual-gourmet with a nouveau inspiration, though the portions are more generous here than what you’d get at a nouveau venue. One to return to time and time again!

Second visit to this attractive cafe that sits behind one of the main carparks on/near the towans. We chatted outside as they got ready to open and then found a comfy seat inside with a great view. Ordering was easy, the menu is small but has something for everyone and they also cooked us a dish not on the menu which I always find is the mark of hospitality and good customer service. Food was fresh, hot and the St Ewe eggs were delicious!
