Sanpa in Wokingham

Brilliant food, authentic tapas, chorizo, prawns and Patatas bravas was super nice and the aioli was heaven! Perfect evening with my bestie! Oh and churros come in a cup of chocolate which you could easily drink!!!

Another great meal here at Sanpa. Took friends who had not been before and they really enjoyed the variation in food choices. Prices are good, portions good and service friendly. We will definitely be back.

We’ve been coming here for more years than I care to remember. Emilio and his family team produce the most exquisite authentic Spanish food. There is an emphasis on tapas, not surprisingly all so fresh and delicious. We will be back and soon, thank you.

On a busy Saturday night we had a really lovely selection of freshly cooked tapas with a white Rioja. Despite the crowd service was friendly and efficient and the tapas arrived at our table as they were cooked. Fresh bread and aioli accompanied garlic prawns, potatas bravos, chorizo in cider, croquettes, goats cheese with jam, squid, meatballs and green peppers. All dishes were excellent with the exception of the squid which was overcooked and on the rubbery side. For dessert the churro and chocolate, brandy alexander ice cream and chocolate brownies were all superb, although I would lose the artificial tasting whipped cream. Great meal.

Meat paella disappointing bits of bone with meat attached. The 2 tapas we had were however incredible. Too packed in and noisy. When I looked at the on line menu I thought it was good value. When we got the up to date menu there of course it was a lot more expensive. Update your on line menu. Most of the food is very good indeed. Avoid the paellas.

Had a great meal earlier this year so I took my husband & daughter to celebrate his birthday as they both love tapas & paella. The tapas we ordered were pretty OK but nothing special but the 4 dishes were delivered one at a time over a 40 minute period. Reasonable if dining outside in a Seville square but less so in the uk especially when they then start bringing main courses out before all of the tapas have arrived. The padron peppers & the calamari were the best dishes, the belly pork was dry & chewy & the croquettas were a bit tasteless. My lamb shank was burnt & dry due to being overcooked & served in a very impractical small shallow bowl with a tiny pool of sauce. The Pedro ximenez ribs were slightly better but clearly plated up hurriedly & very messily with just a mountain of salad leaves. The fajitas looked nicely presented but apparently were nowhere near as good as those I make at home! Service was slow, sloppy & unprofessional. I had to ask one rather slovenly dressed male server to clear some dishes & glasses (tables aren't huge) & he just grunted & took a couple away. We weren't asked at any time if we were enjoying our meal & although we quite fancied having desert, we decided that the experience was just too dismal to wait. When I went to pay, the manager was there so I said that we were disappointed with the food & the service. He offered no apology at all but just said they didn't expect to be busy in January (not our problem) & their online system had allowed too many bookings too close together (also not our problem) For just over £100, I was left feeling distinctly underwhelmed & probably won't bother going again which is a shame as we love great Spanish food but this just isn't worth it.

Amazing place and amazing variety of food we ate here last night with friends and children (8 of us) the tapas was amazing lovely wine and atmosphere, the service was good, young staff who didn’t always know what the dishes were but on the whole very good The Santiago cake was delicious, would have preferred pouring than ice cream though but they didn’t have pouring cream The only thing was the menu said 8% service charge added to the bill for groups of 8 or more so I didn’t leave a tip, when I got got home and checked the receipt it wasn’t added, gutted as I would have left a tip

I went here with my husband on Saturday night. They found us a table last minute which we really appreciated. I loved the food. We had bravas, saute vegetables, chorizo and a pork thing (can't remember the name - Not the albondigas). Service was absolutely fine. Not super attentive but it was so busy and I really didn't want a big fuss anyway. Don't go with the expectation that you will get that sort of attention I would say. Wine by the glass was fine. Not amazing but completely drinkable. Only knocked a star off as it was very, very noisy. But it was a busy Saturday night. It lacked a bit of atmosphere. I'd rather have heard some music instead of the large table behind us, but we did get used to it and had a great evening anyway.

What ever has happened to Sanpas? This used to be our favourite restaurant before lockdown. Since then we’ve visited twice, first time just after reopening. We were very disappointed but put it down to the long lockdown period. However two weeks ago was our anniversary so decided to give it another try hoping things had improved and would be back to its old standard. What a disappointment. Where are the lovely staff which gave the restaurant such a lovely atmosphere? Now the staff make you feel they just want you to get through your food as quickly as possible and get out, service was terrible. Food, well, another disappointment, Potato Brava and Saute Vegetables, which we used to love were certainly not as tasty, the other dishes were just okay. For desert we ordered the Chorose with rich thick chocolate sauce, the chorose were soggy, not crispy and the sauce was like hot water with a bit of chocolate, certainly not rich and thick, the complete opposite. These we sent back as could not except them. I just have to say what a shame such a lovely restaurant has somehow lost its way, what has happened to the staff that really cared about it , the chefs, the waiting staff? It was Saturday evening and certainly not full, I wander why? We were in and out in an hour. We were there to celebrate. Don’t think we will ever return, such a shame.

We found a nice setting. They let us move away from their working station The service was good the food was lovely. The atmosphere started with being quiet, the people arrived it ended up being noisier. It's only a small place. I would've liked the music earlier to appreciate the Spanish feel. The food was fantastic.

Brilliant atmosphere. Every table was taken and it’s easy to see why. Menu provides an excellent choice of main meals or tapas. Broad drinks options as well. Service was first class. Food arrived hot and was plentiful. A really great venue.

Tasty food but very small portions & quite pricey. We had to order additional dishes and actually still were hungry when we left. On the plus side, they are dog friendly!

Went a few weeks ago with my partner to treat ourselves for a Saturday night out. Ordered Meat Paella. It was so salty, pork was so tough and chicken was basically bones. Complained to two different members of staff, no apologies or nothing. Could have cooked something much nicer and cheaper myself at home. I’m sure you could too!

Visited here yesterday evening with 4 friends. The service was friendly and welcoming but considering the restaurant was only half full a bit slow. We didn’t mind this but others might. It’s a place for a slow lunch or dinner. Plenty of variety on the menu, rather heavy on the carbs though. Our meals were nicely cooked and presented and we quite rightly had to wait for the paella to be cooked. The staff were very helpful of dietary requests made by our group. I would say given the current difficulties restaurants are having this is one local place that needs your support so try it out.

Visited on a busy Valentines evening and were treated to some lovely food. We ordered the baked chorizo in cider and calamares con tomate from the Tapas menu - both of which were delicious and tasted authentically different to what you may be served elsewhere. We also ordered the chicken fajitas which came sizzling as you would expect. Staff were pleasant and hospitable even if not all smiles. The rustic, wooden furniture makes for a homely feel. Very reasonably priced also! This place represents much better value for money that most other in Wokingham town centre.

Worst Meal Iv Had in A While. Upon entrance, the staff looked extremely underdressed . I was greeted by one waiter in a hoodie baggie jeans and trainers. Vibe of the restaurant was dead. Fire exit door made the place look shabby. Chorizo was undercooked. Potatoes look like something out of a kebab shop. I was served four meatballs which were tiny for £8. Complete waste of time we wouldn’t again.

Just very very average Cold to sit in. No ambience or atmosphere . All you can hear is the pinging of the timers/microwaves going off in the kitchen and the staff seem very disinterested. Food was bland and showed no signs of flair or imagination, nothing that would draw me back again. It’s a shame because Wokingham would really benefit from a taste of the med on a dreary winters evening. Perhaps some Spanish music in the background and candles on the tables ? Also a finger bowl for crustatian shells and more than the one paper napkin that was supplied

Everything was really good, the atmosphere, the food and most of the service. We had a few tapas to share plus churros for dessert and we loved everything we tried. Specially the calamar a la plancha! A 10/10 for that dish. Unfortunately, I have to mention that at the end of our lovely dinner, when we had to pay, I was dissapointed with a young waitress (blond-ish one) who was very rude. We already had the bill on our table, and we put the cash on top of it to pay. The total amount of the bill was 35.04 and I paid 40.05, to make the change easier. When the girl approached our table, she asked if we were ready to pay (even though the cash was already on the table), and we said yes and then, she left. She came back with the card machine! I signaled the cash, that was right in front of her and we had previously mentioned we were paying by cash. She look at the money like she didn't know what it was, so I was being friendly and told her just to bring £5 back. A few minutes later, she came back with hand full of coins, with a horrible attitude saying it was £4.96. Somehow she must have lost the 5p. With this, I want to clarify I don't care about the money, but please train your staff, cash still exists, coins and notes are still a thing!! And the worst was her attitude, honestly she was very rude and looked like she had no idea what was going on. Anyways, the rest of the experience was amazing, everyone else was friendly and helpful. Looking forward to go back and try some of the other options!

Had a great lunch of different tapas all excellent my friend had not eaten Spanish food before and wanted to go the following day but unfortunately there closed on a Monday x good atmosphere with a background of Spanish music on the patio which on a lovely day was ideal especially with a jug of sangria will definitely visit again next time I stay in Wokingham

Before lockdown this was our favourite restaurant in Wokingham for both food, atmosphere and excellent service so we were looking forward to returning. We booked a table for 5.00pm with friends for a birthday celebration. What a disappointment. We ordered a fish paella for 3 people and a meat paella for 2 people. Both had lots of rice but very little fish or meat. Service dismal, we had to ask for plates then for a plate to put bones etc on then for finger bowls, surely we should not have had to ask for these??? We got to the stage that we just wanted to get out. As we arrived early there was no excuse for this standard of service as they were certainly not busy, most of the staff were just standing around talking. Sadly we will be in no hurry to return.

The food was excellent - great flavours and textures. The service was very friendly and prompt. The pandemic restrictions meant we were seated in the pleasant courtyard, which was well-sheltered from the wind and bathed in the lunchtime sunshine.

Absolutely delicious food, full of flavour and good portions. Due to Covid we had to eat outside which was comfortable. We thought the staff were lovely and polite. Parking in the car park opposite was free on Sundays and there were plenty of spaces - we’ll definitely be back.

We have been to Sanpa on several occasions, and have always been very happy with the experience. This however, was totally different. We were a table of six that were seated by the front door, around the corner from the main restaurant. The waitress was really friendly and we were looking forward to celebrating a family birthday. We received a drinks order, then a food order, and that was the last we saw of any staff coming anywhere near our table for the evening of their own accord. Very strange, as the waitress explained we could order further tapas dishes if we needed more. No checking to see if the food was ok, no further drinks orders, not even any table clearing so there were dirty tapas plates everywhere. To get anything done, I had to walk to the kitchen several times to ask for someone to serve us, one time being to ask where a missing dish was, only to be told “it’s on its way”. All the other food had been finished for at least half an hour. A young girl then walked over 15 minutes later with a plate of bread saying “I was told you want more bread”. I explained we didn’t order any bread, but we did order a patatas bravas 45 minutes ago. For some reason she seemed to be annoyed we didn’t want the bread we didn’t order....A different waitress then accidentally smashed a glass, which ended up going into one of our drinks. She apologised, and said she would get a new glass of wine. This didn’t arrive for at least 30 mins.We then ordered deserts, coffees and a couple of drinks. Some came out, some didn’t, so back up to the kitchen to ask...All in all it was very disappointing. The food is delicious, but with no table service it completely spoils the evening. The manager was very apologetic, removed a few items from the bill and explained they were down on staff. By this point it was just awkward and uncomfortable as we were made to feel guilty for the poor service. Not the way you want to feel when celebrating a birthday on a Saturday night.There was another table near the door that had similar complaints. For some reason that area was not treated the same as the rest of the restaurant that evening. In terms of Covid - 19 - No social distancing what so ever, tables crammed together and staff were not wearing masks. They all had gloves on, but unless they were replacing them with new pairs for every table, they were pointless. There was a bottle of sanitiser by the front door.

Can't fault the chefs. The food was fine, but everything else about this place needs a complete overhaul. The Covid arrangements were poor to non-existent. No social distancing, no masks, staff wearing gloves that were touching everything including our plates and glasses. On top of that, the standard of service was appalling. Wokingham has too many restaurant options for this place to survive unless it seriously improves.

We really love Sanpa's authentic Spanish tapas, which is a unique cuisine as far as Wokingham is concerned, so we were delighted when they re-opened post-lockdown. Our favourite dish this time was the Bacalhau (I know, more Portuguese than Spanish).The negative was that the Covid precautions were below par. In fact other than some hand sanitiser I'm not sure what they've changed - the seats are well under 2m apart, there's no obvious ventilation, it's noisy, and the (un-masked) staff get close. If the local infection rate wasn't so low I wouldn't feel comfortable here.I do hope they get on top of this, because Wokingham needs this kind of very special independent restaurant.

We visited during eat out to help out, and as we walked in we realised that there had been no changes made at all to adhere to social distancing. It was absolutely packed, with tables backing in to each other, just as it was pre covid. I was not comfortable and ready to leave, but luckily there was a table outside which was more spread out, although there were groups way over and above the guidelines.No sanitiser was available for customers, and staff wore gloves all night, which they were touching everything, including their faces etc with. Unless they were changing the gloves for every customer, which I can’t confirm, it was pretty poor. Sadly I won’t be returning during this time, the food was lovely but It is way too unsafe at the moment, and would likely be closed down if found operating like this.I’m not writing the review to upset a local business , but to help others make a choice in these times.

Having booked a table on the website and received confirmation of the booking, we arrived only to be told that their booking showed we had booked a table outside. We hadn’t and it was raining! The lady we spoke to actually said they do not take bookings online for outside anyway! We were told there was no table for us and we needed to eat elsewhere as there was nothing they could do!As this was the first week of the Eat Out to Help government scheme all the other restaurants in Wokingham were obviously full. Hence why we had booked online. Incredibly frustrating and a terrible aggressive attitude from the staff, due to their error. Would not recommend risking booking as their system obviously does not work!

This has always been a favourite restaurant, both for lunch and evening meal. Today was our first meal out for nearly 5 months and was even better than we remembered. Highly recommended.

Sanpa has so much character, and once mixed with friendly staff and fabulous food (assuming you like Spanish food), it’s unbeatable! We had a family gathering, including a vegetarian and the food was tasty and plentiful. We decided on the full array of tapas dishes, which were brought gradually to the table so that everything was hot. The restaurant was packed and it was a bit squashed but still highly recommended. I have also been in there for a mid morning coffee. There is a small courtyard out the back to sit in the sunshine when it’s here!

Girls night out at this fabulous place. Pretty much worked our way through the tapas menu and then had paella. Lovely, friendly service and great to support a local business (free parking after 6 in the car park opposite).

All the favourites are on the tapas list and they mostly taste good. Gambas are well flavoured, patatas bravas a bit disappointing (sauce rather bland), meatballs excellent and the Huevos a la Flamenca really good. One big disappointment is the very poor choice of wine by the glass — one red, one white and not even Spanish. Given Tapas is an accompaniment to drink and Spain has some great wines they need to try harder in this area to make it truly excellent.

Nine of us met here for a night out. Good choice of main meals and tapas. Easily catered for my keto carb free diet. Service was excellent. It’s a noisy restaurant but full of life. Might be a bit difficult if you have hearing aids. Reasonably priced.

After 7 years of amazing experiences at sanpa, tonight was again superb - if you want great food in a friendly atmosphere and all round lovely restaurant then sanpa is for you - our favourite Wokingham restaurant 😍

Whilst it was a weekday night, apart from a table of 8, we only saw two couples the whole evening so it lacked atmosphere. Good friendly service but the meals were disappointing. Meat paella full of bones, seafood paella dull but a fair amount of seafood. Lamb tasted good initially but the salt/sweetness of the honey was overwhelming and needed a good long drink to compensate. Gambas al Ajillo was good, as were lamb cutlets but meatballs tasteless and were swimming in a thin sauce and we left them, whereas the Patata Bravas was overwhelmed with a thick sauce. We had looked forward to Spanish cuisine but were disappointed. Small dessert menu but of this one item not available. In general, we were all underwhelmed.

This restaurant is obviously very popular. It is more of a bistro style, as you would expect.

We recommended this place for dinner with a couple of friends who had not been there before. We had not been there for a year or so but always liked the place.Standards have definitely slipped. Initial service was good with drinks and food arriving reasonably promptly. The Paella was tasty too.However, it went rapidly downhill after the main course. We were offered dessert menus that failed to arrive for nearly 10 minutes and had to ask again for them. Then we ordered Churros that failed to arrive. I had my back to the kitchen but turned around and could see the serving staff stood around staring at their phones and other teenagers (presumably their friends) running through the restaurant into the kitchen and then going outside with bottles of spirits.The restaurant was nearly empty by this point.After 10 minutes we managed to catch someone’s attention and got 2 plates of cold Churros that had clearly been cooked earlier or left out for a long time. After another 5 minutes another fresh plate arrived but the whole ambience was affected with people running through the restaurant to gather more bottles of spirits to congregate outside. It felt like you were having dinner in someone’s kitchen with the local teenagers just helping themselves to the drinks’ cabinet. A very strange ambience for a business who is taking your money for service. To be fair, one dessert was given free of charge but I don’t think we will be back in a hurry - there are plenty of other restaurants operating with more professionalism. A shame as it has previously been excellent.

I visited the restaurant with a group of 11 friends for my birthday. When we arrived for our booking the waitress informed us it was very busy and if we wanted our food to come on time we should order from the set menu. We took this advice. Everything started off well with all the stater dishes arriving quickly and tasting delicious. Unfortunately the main dish didn’t follow suit. We were given what I can only describe as the worst paella I’ve had in my life. It was so bad I don’t think I would visit the restaurant again in the future.

After my partner and I had lunch here not too long ago, we decided to come here on our once a month treat! We were not disappointed. Last time we came my partner ended up polishing off my tuna nicoise salad, this time we both ordered the fish specials, and may I say how difficult it is to cook skate wing right.. and yet.. mine was perfect! And I was so so happy to see that samphire was on the menu, I was expecting a small amount as it is so expensive, but no, I had an ample amount on my plate!! Very happy about that! Thankyou again, we will be back x

Always wanted to try this restaurant.

A group of us who care or live with dementia had lunch at Sanpa's on an extremely hot day and we enjoyed a lovely ly tapas meal. We were guided really well on choices.

Excellent atmosphere, friendly staff, magnificent food, fairly priced wine. Highly enjoyable evening. Recommended

I really like this place and have been several times. Four of us went there last night and left disappointed due to slipping standards. I really hope this is just a blip as it's a great place, slightly unusual and offers an alternative to other local eateries.

My third visit here was disappointing. My wife's main course was served in a badly chipped dish. I ordered the rack of pork ribs and did not enjoy it. Service was friendly though.

We came for dinner and had a selection of cured meats and cheese and a few other tapas dishes also with a lovely bottle of wine. Enjoyed it all very much and will be back.

Wow! We were looking for a new experience in food tastes and a good glass of wine. The owner of the restaurant was in and offered to make a selection of popular tapas for our group. We all ordered wine while looking over the menu selections. We were delighted with the selections offering a variety of foods. There were spanish lamb chops, ham,potatoes with a mild spicy sauce. We even tried some churros with a chocolate dip. The Gambas (shrimp) were one of my favorites. The service and entire experience were like a magical moment in lunch time food fare. The restaurant had a very rustic appearance but also had a look of being freshly decorated. While dining several people inquired about evening reservations. We enjoyed our time here so much, we wanted to take the experience home. Cheers! Great glass of red wine.

We had a meal here and all of the tapas dishes were delicious. We had a lovely glass of cava, and a sweet dessert of churros finished off the evening perfectly. The staff are happy and helpful. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening.

2nd review for Sanpa. It’s lively, the food is great and it’s not expensive.

So walking into the restaurant you are greeted with an extremely warm and friendly atmosphere which would be suitable for any occasion; business and personal. The restaurant is in an old pub I believe so the room has exposed wooden beams and perfect white walls covered in a lot of character. For food we had ham croquettes, parda peppers and the meat paella to share.

We Just went for coffee and glass of wine but very friendly. It would be nice if they had more choice of cakes but excellent service

Chose a selection of tapas which were delicious. Felt I was back in Spain with authentic food and atmosphere. Will definitely go again.

Love Sanpa, whether it's a quick tasty lunch, a girls night out, a family meal (kids love it) or a glass of wine at the bar... definitely a fave of ours, one of the best restaurants in Wokingham..

We came here for a leaving do, and although having been a number of times it wasn't up to scratch. My choices were good, vegetables and grilled squid (an excellent addition to the menu) but the paella was not up to scratch. The service was poor; we actually got the bread we ordered after everyone had finished, the patatas bravas didn't turn up at all and the bill was wrong … it's a shame as previous visits have been far better. And £40 for a seafood paella for two (?) when I remember when you could pick up a take-out for the same cost and feed eight :(

Visited with a group. Good service, great food. Caters for vegetarians - always a bonus. Highly recommended and will return for sure!

Loved Sanpa in the origional setting. Have been here (the new venue) several times with friends and would go back, particularly if you like paella!

Food was great, tapas shared, staff very friendly however the only downside was the number of times we were asked by staff if we were ready to order or ready to see the dessert menu. One asked, 5 minutes we reply, a minute later asked by another waiter/waitress - 5 minutes the reply again, then the third member of staff comes along. I can only assume they were keen for us to experience the food at the earliest opportunity. Don’t let this stop you booking here, as mentioned earlier, the food was excellent and the staff friendly. Had the house red with our tapas, went down very nicely.

Light, open dining space, great atmosphere, fantastic food...... Popped in for lunch, first time and we ended up booking a table for an evening. Really impressed, well done SANPA :-)

We visited on a Thursday at 8pm and it was busy but our table for six was ready, our drinks were served quickly but there was a delay in taking our order and it was v busy but this suited us. Once our order was taken the Tapas were served at an ideal pace, we shared 12 dishes and we all enjoyed (our) choices, one of my dishes chorizo sausages was delicious.

We arrived for a birthday dinner, a couple of our party having been before, and settled in to a nice window table.

This place was just buzzing with atmosphere. It was busy, and we hadn't booked, but the manager found us a seat after a short wait at the bar where we were well looked after. The tapas selection is very good and the food is really tasty, but be aware that portions are actually a decent size so you don't need to order as much as you might think! Service is very friendly.

Our first time here with our rabble of children and we will certainly be back. Authentic Spanish dishes and lovely staff.
