I write this with a heavy heart and in the hope that this review will encourage a change; a change back to the quality of old. I used to wax lyrical about the freshness and authenticity of the delicate flavours this pub kitchen was able to put together for their Thai menu. We enjoyed many a takeaway and eating in and were never disappointed with any of the options on offer. The kitchen has been closed for most of the beginning of this year, but reopened a few weeks ago with a ‘new menu’ ….. Disaster! Gone is the feel of individually cooked dishes with well crafted Thai sauces and flavours. Gone is the freshly prepared and sliced cuts of meat and welcome; freeze dried, generic square cuts of bland beef and chicken coated in ‘out of a jar’ type sauces. Soggy tasteless starters, precooked industrial noodles with now bite and amazingly no flavour. Yes, they can still do a Pad Thai, but it still isn’t as good as it used to be. What’s happened? It feels like the menu has gone in search of profit margins rather than pride and perfection. We’ve tried twice since the kitchen reopened as we just couldn’t believe it could have fallen that far. Both times we paid over £100 for 3 or 4 of us to eat. Unless things change drastically and there is some serious soul searching from the chef and management I can’t see the old regular fan base of this kitchen continuing to order food from this venue. I certainly don’t see anyone new regular customers being created. We won’t be going back anytime soon. I’ll wait until I see reviews telling me how wrong I am and I should give another go. Sandrock team: you know the old menu, you know this new style is not a patch on the old traditional food you cooked. Please please think again.

We popped in last Sunday for 'early doors' and decided to order a takeaway while having a drink. Both chicken dishes were lovely, and a decent amount of chicken and fresh ingredients. We were in the area (from Wiltshire) to view a property and lunch afterwards seemed an appropriate venue to discuss the property so I had looked for a lunch place. Not having had Thai food for a very long time and as we love food this was chosen. It was 10 past 12 when we entered Sandrocks and there was one punter at the bar. We chose the set lunch menu - the duck and the chicken and decided as the sun was shining to sit outside. As pointed out before drinks and food are paid for separately, as the food/kitchen are separate entities. The piping hot food plates arrived in a timely manner and we dipped and dived between both varieties. Very very tasty and just perfectly spicy and flavourful. Extremely happy at the end of the meal and very cost effective !!! I wish it was nearer home as we would eat there quite a lot. Full Marks. We got a nice kitchen wave as we left the pub.👋

Be prepared - there’s ONLY Thai food on the menu. Pub (drinks) and Thai restaurant are managed separately. The pub lady was lovely and patient with us. Food was very good, authentic and freshly prepared to a very good standard. We were 4 adults and 3 kids - everyone enjoyed and was every happy with quality of the food. The Irish have a saying " there's always a warm welcome in our pub". This pub is the total opposite as its welcome is as cold as an ice bath. The government changed the covid rules and said all customers in pubs must wear a face mask and sit at a table. There's me walking in and not knowing the new rules were in affect and instead of being politely reminded of the new rules i was subjected to a stern dressing down by the ice queen bar staff in front of other customers. During the next 6 months pubs are going to be going through a difficult time, due to the government's new rules not my new rules. Every pub is going to need its customers but wont be getting any if there attitude is like this one. Sadly lots of pubs won't be around in six months time, hopefully this one won't.

Dined here recently with friends. So, to start with, the positive. An excellent selection of real ales and lagers and, certainly the Exmoor gold was in good condition. The food was great we had a selection of starters all, very good. The mains were also excellent, I a massaman curry which had a real depth of flavour, and rich with coconut. One of my friends had the jungle curry which he said was really spicy but, very tasty. So far all good! Negatives, well the landlord needs to try smiling more. Oh and the drinks and food bill come separately, so maybe two business, bar and restaurant operate independently. Not a big problem but would have been good to know before we ordered.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

Yesterday, 15th Feb 2020, we again decided to go for a tasty Thai lunch at the Sandrock, a pub restaurant we have frequented on many occasions over the past couple of years. As we came to pay the bill, we were told by the Thai lady kitchen proprietor, that we had not paid our food bill back on 29th Sept 2019. We advised her several times that we NEVER leave an establishment without paying our bill. We suggested that perhaps the payment we made for our meal on that occasion was not put by their member of staff in to the designated kitchen till. The proprietor simply was not interested and in front of other guests continued to accuse us of not paying the 29/9/2019 food bill. It should also be noted that we had eaten at the Sandrock multiple times since the 29th Sept 2019 and at no point was this matter raised with us on any of those occasions. Also, the Thai lady kitchen proprietor further said that we were not the only couple who had not paid but there were others too!! She further said that their staff did not always know which till to put the meal money in to (?!). This further supports that the proprietors of this establishment should be looking closer to home ie their own bar staff who took the payment in the first place. We were deeply uncomfortable and felt unfairly pressurised to pay the 29/9 food bill again due to this relentless accusation also in front of other guests at the time, when we know that we always pay our bills. We will not be going back there despite enjoying their Thai food since we felt deeply offended by such unacceptable behaviour from the kitchen proprietor and also the questionable behaviour by the relevant bar staff who took our payment back on 29/9. We STRONGLY recommend that you request a receipt of your payment for any food you eat at the Sandrock to avoid a similar unpleasant accusation when their bar staff does not transfer payments, in particular cash payments, to the designated kitchen till.

As a pub The Sandrock had been closed for some time and reopened only a few months ago. Previously the restaurant was a regular pub type but is now dedicated only to Thai food. The decor appears very much as it was before it closed and shows virtually no Thai influence apart from one of those strange gold cat statues with one waving arm. The layout is plain, with tables lining both sides of the room and no alcoves and the lighting bright and not intended for mood-setting. But all that is unimportant as it's the food you go there for and it was amazing. From the shared chicken satay starter to the chicken and glass noodles and hot curry it was all so tasty and delivered all the heat and flavour I could have hoped for. The service was typically Thai. Ploy was our waitress and was polite, unobtrusive and showed simple charm, making our experience very pleasant. With the restaurant part of the pub you don't buy drinks from them but go to the bar and pay separately. This is only a small inconvenience but meant that the range of beers and spirits was better than most restaurants. A bonus however is that you can order takeaways and we saw at least 5 being collected as we dined, and this was a quiet night. So it appears to be gaining popularity and we definitely intend to go back as it's within walking distance and worth the stroll on a fine evening.
