We’ve visited the Royal Oak several times now and have always thoroughly enjoyed what we’ve had. I always insist on the pork belly starter because it’s so good. Recently we tried the crispy squid which comes with a lovely dip quite unlike anything you’ve had with squid before. The momo dumplings are lovely and definitely worth a try. Mains have always been fabulous too, my favourite being a prawn curry (King Prawn Tawa Masala) as I’m a big fan of masala sauces which aren’t too spicy. Also tried recently was the lamb shank which was delicious (and quite substantial). There’s only a small number of tables in one end of the pub but you can sit elsewhere to have food. It’s a really small place so best to book at busy times. Our most recent visit was a Saturday lunchtime which was quiet. The staff are all lovely, it can take a little while to get your food at busy times but not so long that it ruins the experience. It’s worth waiting for!

We ordered the Mix cracker basket, Jhol Momo and Sekuwa for starters. For mains, the Himalayan Lamb Curry, Pilau Rice, Chilli Paneer and Royal Oak Lamb Briyani, together with 4 soft drinks. All came to a competitive £52!! The food was delicious, only reason for 4/5. Felt that service was a tad slow but understandable as bar was busy. Will come back again definitely.

In the area to visit the Remembrance Day soldiers artwork locally and came across this little gem. Hubby and I enjoy any type of spicy food and this didn’t disappoint! Food was spicy, but not hot so absolutely packed with flavour, totally delicious! Staff were very polite and helpful, despite it being a busy lunchtime. Would happily return if we are in the area again.

The Royal Oak is a small unassuming pub specialising in Nepali and Indian cuisine managed by a Nepali / Indian couple . The pub is not posh but the ambiance was friendly . Service was mixed taking a while to be seen to and a young lad who blamed his hangover for forgetting drinks orders , not knowing what they stocked etc etc , very unimpressive. However the lady manager was really helpful in choosing typical Nepali dishes which were tasty when they arrived . The pork dish included rather a lot of fat , the dumplings , a Nepali speciality , were quite unlike UK dumplings , more similar to ravioli and delicious . Overall worth a try but better staff would make a difference .

We arrived at the Royal Oak, which looked a bit shabby but we went in anyway.Welcomed and ordered our food, this took an eternity! The starter was ok, a bit bland and boring and my husband had olives with his chicken starter which was a bit odd! My pork was supposed to come with a chutney which never arrived. We sat for about 10 minutes with empty glasses while the waiter and barman chatted amongst themselves and spent a lot of time on their phones. I had to get up and order our drinks. After another 40 mins of waiting our food still had not arrived (at this point we were the only people in the Restaurant), I asked when our food would arrive and I was told in the next few minutes but he said that probably meant at least 5 minutes. I was somewhat surprised when my meal arrived, I had ordered a sizzle platter that came with chips or veg so i opted for chips. The meat sizzle platter was covered on top of the meat with chips with strange gravy all over it, the type of gravy you have on a roast dinner! I wouldn't have minded if it had been nice gravy but it was terrible, there was no mention of gravy on the menu. My husbands food arrived which was tasteless and small! The waiter asked how the food was and I said it wasn't great and didn't like it but by this time I was hungry so ate some of it!He apologised but didn't offer to compensate us in any way, so we paid and left.It was one of the worst meals we have ever had and certainly won't be going back!

This looks like a normal English countryside pub, but once inside you enter a piece of Nepal. The menu is all Nepalese, and the quality would not be out of place in a five star restaurant in Kathmandu. We had a group here and ended up having a selection of different dishes to share. Those worried about too spicy food were surprised at the many options for the more delicate tastes.

Warm and friendly, Ang took good care of us on a Sunday lunchtime. We asked for Nepali specialities for four rather than the 'usual Indian' fare, and we were treated to a table of delicious treats. The starter platter with grilled, marinated paneer and assorted goodies was a great opener, along with the spiced meat dumplings or Momos. Then three distinctly different fish, lamb and chicken curries, the sizzling pork platter, some rice, and a soft yet crunchy garlic naan. These were not your usual muddy meat-thrown-into-some- 'curry secret' sauces, but properly crafted dishes. Our taste buds were delighted with the level of spice, with just enough heat to leave us satisfied. More heat is available if you request it, but as a reformed chilli-head I found it lovely as it was. We tried two condiments; the unique raita and a wonderful fermented radish which added some heat and texture. To be honest, the food far exceeded our expectations, the hospitality lovely. Nepali food seems to be a friendly fusion of Indian and Chinese, best exemplified by the Indian-spiced dumplings. Luckily we weren't in a hurry, but the dishes totally delivered once they arrived, and we made allowances it being a Sunday. I went with my family who grew up in 1970's Stokenchurch and we would often go here for a crafty pint, but would never have dreamed a restaurant like this would appear in our little village 25 yrs later. Thoroughly recommended and worth going out of your way for.

Had a meal here with my husband and sister recently. Have eaten here a couple of times before and the food is good. The menu had changed since our previous visit and although still good the Pad thai noodles were not available now, which is the dish I really enjoyed. I still enjoyed what i ordered. The Peshwari Naan was delicious and the mushroom rice. My only comment would be that I could have done with the actual curry being hotter (as in warmer not stronger), by the time I got to the last few mouthfuls it was cold.

After a recommendation, I ate here alone on a Wednesday evening. It was busy when I arrived but it thinned out after about 20:30. The restaurant is in a pub - more accurately, is a pub, with a good selection of draught ales and lagers on offer. Service was fast and friendly. I ordered a Chicken Tikka starter (nice meat, tasty but very lightly spiced), followed by a lamb saag (which I asked for a "liven-up" with green chillies) and a saag aloo. I normally love north Indian / Nepalese cooking and there are many great places to eat such food in and around Oxford and the surrounding area. I love the copious amounts of dark brown spices in this kind of cooking, such as cumin, cardamom, cloves and star anise. The food here was pleasant with the use of good quality meat but with no real spicing. Tasted blind, the lamb saag would have passed for a lamb stew - filling but disappointing from the point of view of background spicing. I would eat here again, despite it being a bit of a track from where I usually stay, but I would talk to the staff first to understand their menu a bit better and get a more suitable spiced meal for my taste.

Both times although we were probably their very last customers, there was no reluctance to serve us a meal and the service was very good. the place lacked a bit of atmosphere, not particularly cosy, but then it is a large space and virtually empty when we arrived. We opted for the fish & chips. It was well presented, good value and far preferable to a meal in a service station.

The place is a pub, not a restaurant. For what it is, it is very good, one of the best in Oxford centre. Fish and chips has always been of high quality. They have nice internal spaces with excellent lighting, and plenty of outside space for summer and milder Spring/Autumn afternoons. Their beer selection is splendid. Besides some solid ales they have interesting lagers. I can especially recommend the Korev, a Cornish lager. Usually it is possible to find a place, but if you are planning something here it might be a good idea to book because the place is popular.

Slightly strange combination - Nepalese food in an old historic pub. There is an obvious link here between those running the pub and the British Army, so there are shields around the bar. If you ignore the nationality of the majority of staff and the oriental menu, then you could be in any old English pub - log burning stove in the Inglenook, chunky old furniture etc. But the menu is great. We didn't intend eating but fancied a quick bite after seeing the food arrive on other tables. we couldn't decide so told the waiter we wanted to taste different things and he created our very own taster menu. Very nice indeed. Recommendable.

Having moved to the area recently, hubby and I have now visited the Royal Oak pub several times for a meal, as the food is always tasty and the hospitality is always genuine.I love Nepalese food and, if I'm being really picky, I feel there is perhaps too much standard Indian (and Chinese) fayre on the Royal Oak's menu, rather than Nepalese specialities. Even so, this place is a hundred times better than other Indian restaurants in the area, with a more interesting menu, which is why we keep going back. This review however concerns a particular recent experience. We'd booked a table at the Kings Hotel round the corner to celebrate hubby's 60th Birthday. It was intended to be a special event with all his children and their partners around him, however we unfortunately had the worst possible experience (see my review of the place and you'll understand!). Hungry and disappointed, our group piled into the Royal Oak fairly late and asked if there was any chance of a meal. The small restaurant area was busy but, when the staff heard what an awful night we'd had, and took on board the special occasion it should have been, they made room for us in the bar area. They took care of us completely and we trusted them to bring us a selection of starters and mains of their choice. We were not disappointed. The selection of starters pleased our whole group, followed by a fantastic selection of meat curries, rice, fresh vegetables, gorgeous light naans and (my favourite) chilli fish (which is small pieces of battered fish in a sort of sweet chilli sauce) . Everyone thoroughly enjoyed every dish, and anything left over was brought home and thoroughly enjoyed the following day!Hubby's daughter and her partner came all the way from Australia for the occasion and they were overwhelmed by the flavour of the food and the friendliness of both the staff and the locals in the pub.We had a great time and carried on drinking until closing time. The Royal Oak saved us from a potentially disastrous night and we feel very warmly towards the guys for their wonderful hospitality. We live four miles away from Stokenchurch but this pub/restaurant still deserves the accolade of our favourite local. Just wish it was within walking distance! Love the pub, love the staff, and love the food. The Royal Oak has a new, well-deserved fan club that reaches as far as Sydney, Australia!Thank you Royal Oak x

Don't be put off by the outside which looks like it is quite a 'local' establishment, the guy behind the bar was perfectly welcoming. The place is quite small and quirky with a couple of pub tables to the left and 5 or 6 tables to the right which were laid up for dinner. We noticed the menu was quite interesting, Nepalese - a mix of Indian / Chinese food so booked ourselves in for dinner later that evening. What an excellent choice - food was delicious, all 4 of us ate every single thing that was put in front of us. The staff was so friendly, particularly the Nepalese guy. We went in to a wall of loud music and all of the above drinks were off: on a Thursday night! One of the barmaids was just so dismissive of the fact that they'd run out that we left after just a half-pint. There was nowhere to go to escape the 'muzack' and even one of the locals got up and moved a speaker to try and deaden the sound. Trying to get in turned down was a waste of time so we won't go back and if we do it will have to be a lunchtime. This could be a lovely pub but let's see someone there who cares about the place and isn't just there for the wage packet.

Before arriving we had seen this pub advertised in most of the brochures so we made it our first stop.It was ok, the outside bit is nice to sit and people watch.I didn't find the staff that friendly and there really wasn't anything that special to write about. We didn't go back and instead we found the Golden Rule which is a great pub with GREAT staff and local banter. In our week staying Ambleside we visited four times.

Planned to eat in this pub. However, lady on next table complained about her egg mayo sandwich which was largely missing any egg. She returned it but the next sandwich was pretty much the same and delivered by a rather grumpy goth-looking lady. My husband visited the gents toilets and said they were disgusting and the pub in general was tired and dirty.

Smallish pub, popular with the locals. Good food cooked on the premises. Variety of Chinese, Nepalese, Indian and English dishes. Nepalese and European beer. Good service and friendly staff. Owner does a great deal for charity and sponsors an orphanage/football academy in Pokkara. Chat to him if you are interested in a visit to Nepal; I went last year and was well looked after, definitely one for the bucket list!

Had a late lunch here and place seems busy all the time which usually confirms good food. We were not disappointed at the lasagne which came with salad and garlic bread. I queried the contents of the dish with the staff and immediately they were able to advise of the ingredients before ordering. Well impressed with the staff. Food did not disappoint. Would revisit if again in the area

A Gurkha pub selling good beer including a Nepalese Lager. The food is a cross between Chinese and Indian with some Nepalese dishes thrown in. Staff are exceedingly friendly and the pub has a lovely atmosphere.

If you enjoy a spicy treat, these might just be what you're after. Tucked away on the corner of Church St off Market Place, you'll miss it if you walk into the wrong establishment on either side. Staff are very welcoming, there is a fine selection of different ales (tending towards seasonality from the selection on offer in a sunny September), the food all appears to be very wholesome and well priced. The reason I was motivated to write a review was the pulled pork nachos; complete with cheese, spicy salsa, barbeque sauce and a generous helping of jalapeno peppers, served with a side helping of guacamole and soured cream. Unlike many offerings, this isn't a pile of nachos with the "goodies" on top, the toppings are laced throughout - like they should be!! There is plenty here for two to share and enough for a lunchtime snack on it's own.

Nice enough pub but I left here wondering if they have one set of prices for locals and one for tourists. On a Friday night the bar was buzzing with locals when I ordered a pint of cider and a small lemonade, which were both very flat. Now I know I was in The Lake District but £8.75 seemed excessively steep. Shame really as they lost my business to the pub over the road who charged £5.50 for the same drinks.

We used the pub both in the day and night. Daytime was best as food was served until seven. We were disappointed in the evenings, the bar area is small and the adjoining room seemed isolated. However, to sit outside and enjoy the delights of local ale and massive hot banquets made up for it.

A mate and I enjoyed a great evening at this traditional pub a few years ago. I was looking forward to taking my partner their on my latest trip to the lakes but we barely entered before she turned around and understandably refused to return. The men's lavatory is close to the front door and the smell was overpowering. A real shame that such a basic factor was overlooked.

Was visiting ambelside so decided to stop here for lunch, ordered our drinks and two baguettes, one cold one hot ( I am a caterer so I know this takes a few mins) the pub was busy so knew it would take a while..half an hour later went to enquire, and they ( the dyed haired barmaids) looked blankly at me and asked the chef( loose term) he was just doing it ( he'd forgot). 10 more mins, still no food. I walked in to ask for refund and the red dye was already getting money from till. No apology, I had to ask for one, and it was reluctantly offered. Don't go here if you want a pleasant smile and good customer service because it was sadly lacking here.

We needed to get something to eat quickly as one of our party was diabetic so could not wait long. We popped in but should have carried on really. We were told they were serving food but had run out of burgers. Opted for two pies but they only had one. Another meal was also not available. As our friends had already ordered teas we thought we had better stay. The décor was not good but the place was packed. Signs up said they had a tripadvisor award but this was not recent. The girl brought the tea out and I noticed the teapot was badly stained as well as a chip in one mug - not a good start. Hubby was not keen on his food choice so we swapped. I found some plastic wrapping on my broccoli and there was a hair in my meal just as I got near the end. We complained to the girl but she asked if we would we like a free dessert but to be honest we did not want to stay. We were offered a drink but were driving so just said it was okay. She must have called the manageress as we were asked to wait until she came. She was very apologetic and offered a refund so we can't grumble really. We aren't ones to complain so maybe it was a bad day. It's a shame because it could be a good pub. Hopefully it has improved.

We have not been in here for a few years, it has gone down hill so much. The place needs closing and redecorating throughout, the loos were disgusting. Beer flat in no time. We sat outside on Sat 25th July, Ambleside was busy, due to the race, but there was a bunch of lads (I think local ) who were drunk, swearing and smashed a few glasses, one fell over the wall, the barmaid came out and said nothing, not sure if the manager was around, but they should not have been serving them. Hopefully the manager will take on board what is being said, its not just me who feels like this.

This is probably the worst public house I have ever been in. Not organised one bit, I entered with two children and asked was it ok for them to come in, yes replied the young pleasant barmaid, we found seats and got ourselves a drink, I asked do they do a children's menu, no was the reply and the young barmaid asked an older barmaid, she said they could do for us with much reluctance in her face, I suppose we could sell half baguettes. I returned to the bar literally three minutes later with my order. The older barmaid said sorry we are not serving food anymore as we have run out of plates, I was too shocked to reply, I said to my partner let's drink up and get out of this dingy place. As I turned around a few that came after us were funnily enough were just being served some food. I know when I'm not wanted and left in disgust. The young blonde barmaid was very pleasant but the one with the shocking dyed hair her attitude was awful.

The Royal Oak is tucked away just off the main road running through Stokenchurch on the opposite side to the petrol garage.Primarily it is a pub, but attached to it is the small Nepalese restaurant called “Gurkha Hut”.Nepal is situated between India and China, so the food style is almost a mixture between the twoI ordered Pappadoms starter whilst my partner had a marinated king prawn. Both starters were excellent. For the main course I had the Salmon Sizzler – salmon marinated with spices, ginger and garlic, then pan fried. My wife had curry, medium hot. It was cooked exactly as requested, medium hot with a touch of chilli heat. We had Gurkha Hut special rice, garlic naan bread and a vegetable dish with our meals. All were excellent. For the drinks there were the usual pub choices with the added advantage of Nepalese beer. This was surprisingly good.An added advantage here is that if any one in the group does not like Nepalese food, they also serve traditional pub food.I consider the meal to be very reasonably priced.I think this place gets quite busy on Friday / Saturday evenings so would suggest booking.

First impressions weren't good. After checking trip advisor and seeing mixed reviews we thought we would give it a try. It's dark and very dated but the friendly staff and the fact it is dog friendly was enough for us to over look this. The decor reminded me of the old workmans clubs and the menu is simple and good value. The food itself wasn't bad and is nice enough for you to clear the plate, if your use to fine dining this probably isn't the place for you. Also the ultimate test for a place like this is the toilets which in happy to report were spotless.

A typical British pub with a good variety of beers and ciders all stored at the right tempoeratures. Food was good, but be aware that food service may finish early evening (8pm-ish), and there is not always a main course option.

Called at the Royal Oak many a time when we stay in Ambleside. It's tired and dated inside, but it's a fine old fashioned pub, no frills, and I love the proper pub atmosphere. I drank either old rosie, or San Miguel both were excellent. Friendly staff, they do get a bit stretched at lunch / tea time with food, but no issues with any of them. Doesn't matter where you come from, they will chat with you at the bar. The mark of a good old pub, too few nowadays.
