Food amazing and very friendly staff. Even small portion was large for me. Brother’s dog did very well though. Roast beef was yummy

We have visited the R and A several ptimes and have never been let down by their food or hospitality. From sandwiches to salads to a la carte their food is plentiful, tasty and fabulous value. You ll never leave hungry. Would I recommend? - you bet I would- would I return? - without doubt I would Always busy ( no questions why) so I’d recommend to book if you’re going

Six family members visited on the day it reopened and received a warm welcome into a wonderful pub and was served fantastic and tasty food. The staff were delightful, helpful and efficient. The food was served hot and was delicious and plentiful. We all enjoyed our visit and will be returning soon

Family meal for 4. Upon arriving we were quickly seated and asked about drinks and provided with menus. The waiting staff were all absolutely lovely, with big smiles. Starters arrived quickly. Mains took a little longer, but the restaurant was busy. Mains arrived and every plate looked lovely. The portion sizes are generous and the food is good quality. I had the pork belly which was delicious. The highlight being the black pudding Bon Bon. For dessert I had sticky toffee pudding which was really flavourful, A good quality meal, and a lovely atmosphere. Will absolutely return to try more of the other lovely menu options.

The food was excellent, and the staff were so polite. Due to a disabled member of our party of 4 they got us a table with plenty of room, and close (but not too close) to the door as well as close enough to the toilets. We will definitely be returning soon.

All the staff were lovely and kind,the food was fantastic Trinity on the bar was super fast and friendly. Debs took our order and was also so kind and friendly. Tasha and Sally were also kind and accommodating. Would definitely recommend.

We had dinner here with a family party of 10+. We had to book in advance, which is understandable, but does take a little fun out of the evening. Overall food was very average, 'roast of the day' was belly pork? not what you would expect, which the younger members had to change for burgers (which they did). It's a pub! so it was pub grub and with the exception of a poor curry most people finished their meals. Cannot get excited about the place but I guess a smaller party would probably do better so on that basis would suggest you give it a try if its pub food you want.

Sadly, after several happy visits in 2024, this time around was disappointing. I hope the pub is not a victim of its own success. Slow service and almost three hours in the place. An undercooked steak that should have been 'medium' was red throughout apart from the outer skin. The full bill was presented, then replaced by staff giving a £6 reduction off a £142 total. Perhaps it was one of those days... but I won't be rushing back.

Went to the Royal & Ancient for a meal with friends on a very busy Saturday evening in June. The atmosphere was great - a bit noisy but none the worse for that. The staff were friendly and attentive. We ordered our food and didn't have long to wait for our starters which were delicious. The plates were cleared and the main course served which was equally good. All the food was hot when it was brought out (in my experience lukewarm food is often a let down, even in good restaurants) and there was plenty of it. The staff were highly visible at all times so any extra needs (napkins, sauces, etc) were accommodated easily. Really enjoyed our evening and will definitely return. As we left the group on the next table told us they were from Leeds and the food here was cheaper, there was more of it and it was better than in the city.

We popped in for lunch, and it’s one of the best pub lunches we’ve had in years. I had brisket quesadillas and Mr B has gammon. The portions were generous, chips top notch, everything picking hot and the staff lovely. We’ll definitely be back.

Absolutely 5* this is a hidden gem for most so glad we came across this place through recommendations! Affordable, fresh and always bloody delicious!!!

Came as a large party of 14 for Father’s Day. Order was taken promptly and food served in decent timing no long wait and all orders were correct. Food was really taste and warm and the service was fantastic

We booked for 6 pm and were met by pleasant staff and shown to our pre-booked table. Staff were friendly and attentive, took our order and the meal was served promptly. For starters we had garlic mushrooms which were deliciously served on sliced ciabatta with copious delightful sauce. For main courses we had gammon and lasagne. Both were served piping hot and tasted delicious. All in all it was a very pleasant meal in a lovely restaurant. We have used this restaurant several times, including lunch and it has never failed to please.

A good few years since we were last here but we were not disappointed. After reading the latest reviews, we were in the area and paid a visit again. We had not booked but that wasn't a problem. Very friendly staff there soon found us a table and offered us a drink from the good selection offered on the bar. Timothy Taylors Landlord was on good form !. Great selection of food from the menu was on offer. We selected garlic mushrooms and belly pork bites as our starters and Fish & Chips and lasagna for main courses. All arrived in a prompt time, were well presented and served hot. Excellent portion sizes were served and all tasted delicious. Just one minor point was the fish could have been cooked slightly longer as the batter was slightly undercooked. Other than that a wonderful visit. We will be back soon Thanks to all the staff

The Royal and Ancient hosted us for a wake following a family funeral. We asked for an afternoon tea spread and were absolutely blown away. The food was excellent with a selection of freshly baked cakes and scones which were delicious. What’s more, the staff were so attentive and really looked after us while we were there. We couldn’t have asked for a better experience.

Lovely meal- we had home made soup, roast beef and calves liver. Staff very friendly and helpful. Would definitely recommend.

My wife and I called in today on the off chance they had a space. The lovely lady managed to get us a table and I am so glad she did. We both had fish and chips. To say the meal was substantial would be an understatement. These guys know how to fill a plate with Perfectly cooked Haddock and possibly the best chips I have had for a Long time. The staff were friendly and attentive and the bill was more than reasonable. 5 star service and we will be back.

Disappointed, went for a family lunch 4 mains 3 dessets, one child mains which came with a dessert, 4 drinks. One of the brisket meals had to be sent back due to half of the brisket being just a lump of fat, 2 Eaton mess was left due to lack of meringue, very tart berries and half frozen cream, the other desert jam roll poly with vanilla custard I was told was delicious but for £110 I expected better. The staff were attentive, friendly and professional. Sorry Royal and Ancient we have eaten here before and throughly enjoyed the food, not sure what happened this time.

Looking for a nice place to treat my staff and was told to go here and I have to say it did not disappoint. The meals were very tasty, generous portions and easy on the wallet. The staff are very accommodating and friendly. My staff now say this is there go too…..win win

Just finished yet another lovely meal at this wonderful eatery..food consistently good everytime we've been. The food is always hot and very tasty with enough on the plate to feed a good appite. Staff are polite ,warm,friendly along with being very helpful.one thong to note book in advance as it does get busy although the staff have been very accommodating when we've contacted them at the last minute .

Had the pork belly for starters and the roast dinner for main. It’s the first time I’ve been after many recommendations and by goodness, it didn’t disappoint. The food was cooked to perfection, including the veg! I don’t like sprouts but ooooohhh these were perfectly cooked…. I had 2!!! I can eat a big meal but I was outfaced and brought my leftovers home for tea. Yorkie was the size of a baby’s head and the best I’ve ever eaten. I often rate my meals on the amount of oooh’s and ahhhhh’s that escape me and I was oooohing and ahhhhing A LOT!!! If you like to oooooh and ahhhhh, this is the place for you!!!! 😁

This pub rightly has an excellent reputation for its food locally. We have eaten here a few times and it never fails to deliver. This time was a family Sunday lunch but the menu is varied if you do not want a traditional roast. Some of our party had starters which may be a challenge as the main courses are very generous. However I was told the Garlic mushrooms, Pate and Brie were very good. Amongst excellent main courses the Fish and Chips were superb, but the mushy peas disappointing and watery. The lasagne was very good as was the Belly Pork and Roast Turkey. Sticky Toffee pudding is recommended. Good choice of beers including Landlord and Shipyard. Excellent service throughout.

From the outside the building is impressive but inside is a little bit of a let down. Myself and my husband could not believe how cold it was inside. Due to this our food went cold very quickly which was a big shame as the food was beautiful. We had a roast which was good to see on a weekday menu. I work Sundays so don’t get the chance to dine out for Sunday lunch. Service was ok.

Fabulous entrance to the bar area. Unfortunately the restaurant looks too white with no character. Would have been great if decorated the same as the bar! Menu arrived. I asked for wine menu? No. Asked for wine by the glass? Dont know what we have! Ok! Menu: pretty poor starters. Mains ok. Partner had scampi. I ordered lasagne. Scampi came good but without T sauce and peas. Mine. Dry. Sauce had dried up. Shame the actual meat was tasty! Garlic bread was toast and floppy salad was ok. No other menu offered shame that the dinner menu was not. Went into the bar area for drinks. Much better. Shame they dont serve food in there with a much more varied menu.
