Rose and Crown in South Cambridgeshire

Came here with my partner for our anniversary and this pub is absolutely gorgeous, the staff are so lovely and friendly, I would 100% recommend their steak.

Perfectly cooked food, both enjoyed our lunch. Staff are helpful and friendly Will definitely be going back. Thank you guys

I recently had my 60th birthday party at the Rose and Crown. Carol, the manageress and chef arranged for me to have the pub exclusively for my guests. We were treated to a thee course meal for 32 which was cooked to perfection! Carol, Steve, his wife and Jess made my night a complete success and were extremely polite and helpful. Thank you so very much for your attention to detail, expertise and professionalism, it made my night just that extra bit special.

The Food was delicious service spot on very friendly. The host was so welcoming as if we were regulars.

Popped in for lunch before evening racing at Newmarket. Proper home-cooked, homemade food. Will definitely revisit.

The food is nice but don’t go work for the pub owner / manager she is rude and she won’t pay because she hasn’t payed me. I did 2 shifts and they was my first 2 shifts. She literally shown me around the pub and then just sent me to it. she didn’t help me with anything. Just thrown me into the deep end. I mean I had bar experience but I haven’t worked on a bar for over a year and she thought I would know everything and if u made one little mistake she will bite your head off. So I left after 2 shifts because I wasn’t being payed to be yelled at all the time. Well I say payed. SHE HASNT EVEN PAYED ME !!! And when I’ve messaged her to see if I’m getting payed she has just ignored me !!! Very professional indeed Don’t get me wrong but the food is nice but DONT GO THERE TO WORK !!! YOU WONT GET PAID !!!! AND YOU WILL GET YOUR HEAD RIPPED OFF !!!!

Mediocre food delivered late, then attitude from the manageress blaming everything except the crappy service...pathetic.

We didn't realise the Rose and Crown delivered Sunday lunches - but they do - and they are delicious. Roast beef, Yorkshire puds, roast spuds and veg delivered piping hot exactly on time. And lunch for a vegetarian, also excellent. All this and excellent value for money. Wonderful treat that cheered up another lockdown Sunday - THANK YOU!

Booked for an evening meal and really wish we hadn't. Greeted with "We havent got x, y and z". Persevered as still some things on menu that looked ok but was a mistake. 2 meals cold, fish full of fins, and the unbelievable " no you can't see the bill until you pay this random amount I have told you it comes to". Needless to say we will never visit again.

Good local pub food at reasonable prices. Does a few specials e.g. Steak night £25 for two including bottle of wine - which is great value. Good place to watch the rugby as well without impacting on diners. Very friendly service.

First meal in the rose and crown . Superb food with great flavours and excellent quality with great service. The only criticism would be on busy nights they need additional staff. Would absolutely eat there again the food quality was excellent

First time visit to this establishment, but understand it is under new ownership. We visited on a week night. We hadn't booked, unfortunately there was a large party in so taking our order was delayed by quite some time. We were kept updated, which we were impressed with. When the food arrived it was lovely, hot and delicious. We will hopefully be able to return in the near future.

This pub has recently got new landlords and we were very impressed. 4 of us had lunch, all different choices and all were excellent. They were all served at the same time, all dishes hot and very enjoyable. We had fish and chips, cottage pie, liver and bacon and steak and kidney pudding. Good choice of desserts too and all at reasonable prices. The hosts are very friendly and keen to please. The pub also has steak nights and fish and chip days which are good value for money. We look forward to our next visit.

I visited mid week and enjoyed a very nice beer and excellent grilled gammon steak with chunky chips anThe chunky chips were crisp on the outside and sof int hd peas. The service was friendly and efficient , The gammon was as lage as the plate it was served on and was almost too big for me to eat!, The chunky chips were crisp on the outside and soft on the inside, The peas were sweet and juicy And the eggs were perfectly fries and soft

We decided to try the lunch menu last Saturday (11th Jan)for the first time since the previous landlord moved on in November. We were warmly greeted by the staff and seated at the table of our choice. The menu looked good, solid "pub grub" and I chose the Steak & Kidney pudding with mash and peas, while my wife plumped for the Ham, egg & chips. Both meals were served with friendly efficiency and my pud was all I'd expect for a traditional S&K. Not many places serve it nowadays, I find. Ruby's meal was as equally good and we'll certainly be going back

Visited for lunch. A nice comfortable pub. A little cold temperature wise, however the log burner which wasn't in would make for a nice warm restaurant. The food was sensibility priced and served in a hearty portion. Quality was okay and overall good value.

So disappointed with our visit. It’s hard to imagine that the Rose and Crown would go downhill so quickly. The tenants before last worked for nearly three years to bring Histon a lovely pub restaurant, the standard in every area was first class. The tenants in between were not there for long! Now it’s a pub serving very average meals. The finishing touches that made dining so special have gone. The attention to detail very poor, We won’t be going back.

Algunos de nuestros amigos nos dijeron que Rose and Crown estaba bajo una nueva administración, tuvimos muchas comidas deliciosas bajo la administración anterior, por lo que pensamos que lo probaríamos. Visitamos aquí para comer algo el viernes por la noche, el pub está limpio, ordenado y muy bien presentado. El cambio de gestión es notable por todos los motivos correctos. Aunque el pub estaba ocupado, el personal trabajó muy duro y la comida llegó rápidamente muy atractiva. Definitivamente lo recomendaría y volveremos!

Lovely Pub,lovely food and helpful friendly staff. At time of writing there is road works going so had to park near the green but that's fine and the pub really needs support as the owners get no compensation for the loss of trade due to all the work going on. So if you are near Histon and want great value for me make the effort to go to the Rose and Crown

We visited the Rose and Crown for the first time and were not disappointed. We had booked an early evening table and there were quite a few tables with diners already eating and there was a nice atmosphere/ambience. We had a starter and mains but couldn't manage a pudding! I had the burger with sweet potato fries and it was the best "pub" burger I have had in a long time. The beef was succulent and tasty. The sweet potato fries were lovely and crisp and it was a good sized portion as an additional extra. My husband had the meat pie special, chips and veg which he also enjoyed. He did have to help me to finish my dish. Only negative with my dish was that I wish there was an option for just the beef burger without the chicken and bacon. I really enjoyed it but it was just too large. If there were an option to remove those to make it smaller for smaller appetites and a slightly cheaper dish it would be perfect.

On our trip to Cambridge we stoped at this pub for our dinner. The location was great, the food was really great and the service was very nice. In total: a perfect evening for me and my family.

Stopped to have lunch on Friday, despite roadworks, it was worth the detour. Friendly welcoming staff, great food, good portions and good value. The pub itself is so clean and homely, the fire was lit making a relaxed atmosphere. A traditional pub with traditional values. Definitely worth a visit.

New owners and varied lunchtime menu from snacks to a la carte and food was really good. Had the home made Mushroom soup and curry. Would definitely visit again. Note I went on a Friday lunchtime, it was fully booked for the evening.

We were looking for somewhere to eat on our return journey and this was ideally located just off the A14. The menu has a really good choice and there were also some specials on the board. I had the scampi and it had to be the best scampi I have had in a long time! It was accompanied by some tasty chips and a fresh side salad. Service was quick and friendly. The pub had a very welcoming feeling with comfortable modern surroundings. Overall, good hot food, great selection of pub classics and value for money - we wished it was nearer to home, as we'd definitely eat there again!

New owners but we had heard good things. Took a chance and we hit the jackpot. Thoroughly enjoyed the evening. Glad not to be too close to the excellant live pianist as it was a little loud and our window seat was a little narrow but the food more than made up for it! There is all the choices of meat and veg that you can expect for a good pub Sunday lunch. There is a nice selection of desserts and the service was very good too.

Lots of meat and veg all cooked to perfection and piping hot, loads of gravy. Their home made mango sorbet was heavinly. Will definitely return

We were down in Cambridge visiting my brother and sister in law and we had planned to go out for tea.

Wonderful food and service. Francis and Lois are always so welcoming. We used to go to The Three Tuns at Fen Drayton when Francis and Lois were there so we had no hesitation in coming here. Never disappoints.

My wife sandy and me had the best steak and burger we have had for years well done the service was top class all in all 10 out of 10

We are fortunate to live in the village. This was a mid week visit and it was heaving. the environment is lovely and immaculate the ladies have small hand towels a lovely touch. The staff were lovely and nothing was too much trouble. The presentation of the menu looked a bit like a take away, but don't be put off as the food was good quality home made and worth the money. We each loved what we had, and I would recommend trying the special desert whiskey nog with ice cream superb. Looking forward to our next visit.

We arrived here after a trip to dump the old dishwasher. The inside of the pub is really nice, beautifully kept and decorated. It was warm inside too, all too often pubs leave it too chilly when it's not very cold outside. My partner had the veggie Sunday lunch which was very good, lovely homemade sausages and lots of quality veggies cooked perfectly. I just had the mushroom starter which was tasty too. Good service. Would certainly visit again. Reasonably priced.

A return visit with family, and as previously, a lovely meal. A good choice on the menu, the Histon burger always a good choice, as well as the curry of the day. All in all, a good meal and nice surroundings.

Día de boxeo y había espacio en esta posada! No lo he intentado antes. Muy agradablemente decoradas con un interior espacioso y acogedor. Yo diría que un menú normal. La comida era fresca y agradable, pero no había nada muy aventurero para elegir. Mi cerveza real fue muy buena. No comimos un postre. Feliz de volver otra vez.

Cada año visitamos esta área para un almuerzo y este es el mejor hasta ahora. A pesar de que el lugar estaba ocupado con los almuerzos de la fiesta de Navidad, todavía atendían nuestra reserva para un almuerzo "normal". No nos sentimos en absoluto excluidos. This is the first visit I have been able to make since Francis and Lois took over. A great experience and one that will certainly be repeated asap! Food and service was superb and they are certainly keeping up the standard they set at The Three Tuns in Fen Drayton. Sadly missed there but their new pub is delightful - full of character and lovely friendly people. Food was delicious. Many thanks. I will be back!

We dine here every few months, and the new menu and options are better than ever. A truly delicious fish chowder went down very well, after the mixed starters shared by us all. Best to book, as they are very popular, justly so!

Last Sunday, 30th September, we had lunch at the Rose and Crown. As it’s so popular we were booked into the 1.30 2nd sitting, no problem, and we 8 adults and 3 children were soon seated. Decisions on what to choose, and nut allergy queries answered, partly with a comprehensive printed booklet, we settled to wait for our starters. They soon arrived and soon empty plates replaced them! Then our Sunday roasts were served with several dishes of a varied selection of vegetables. The meats were delicious, and special praise for the vegetables. Sadly no room for desserts on this occasion. Thank you to the patient, friendly and helpful landlord and staff, the chef and all those ‘behind the scenes’. We are fortunate to have you in Histon.

My colleague and I were staying at a soulless hotel in the vicinity and were drawn here by good reviews on Trip Advisor. We were not disappointed! The food was excellent; traditional but also cosmopolitan, good portion sizes - exactly what you need after a hard day's work! The beer was beautiful, one of the best pints I've had in ages. Prices were very reasonable and the landlord was really friendly and lovely to chat to. Highly recommended if you are in the area!

Como 2 familias (4 adultos y 4 niños). Fuimos a Rose & Crown por primera vez el viernes pasado. Reservamos con antelación y nos sentaron inmediatamente a su llegada. Entre nosotros, tuvimos el Steak & Ale tarta, pollo y Bacon pastel de carne, ensaladas y comidas de 4 niños. La comida fue rápido para llegar, caliente y bien presentada por personal muy experimentado. La comida era abundante y salsa también estaba disponible sin solicitar. Los platos y mesa fueron aclaradas de forma eficiente en el final de la comida. Todas y Todos una experiencia muy placentera. Bien hecho Rose & Crown, volveremos.

Francis and Lois used to be the lovely landlord/lady of the Three Tuns in Fen Drayton and sadly we lost them to the Rose and Crown in Histon. Now these people just know how to run a pub, warm, kind, children orientated, good business people, professional and above all know how to serve good quality food at an affordable price. Today we drove over from Fenstanton, cross country to avoid the infamous A14, to say hello and have lunch, sadly missed d Lois. Francis was in top form as usual, great lunch and welcoming staff. We will be over again of course and bring some of the troops over from Fenstanton at some point. Villagers of Histon enjoy your village pub!

This pub has just been taken over by new people, we went there with my parents one night in the week to try it and were not disappointed. The menu had a good choice and all the dishes we were served tasted great and we had great service.

The new owners of this small pub resturant have attempted to give a new twist on pub food,and its good good service the food we had was good and not a rip off we enjoyed it and will be going back again.

this restaurant pub is under new management. the meals are good, and value for money. the staff are friendly and helpful. my friend had a curry that he said was the best he had ever tasted, but unfortunately my wife had fish and chips and the fish was fatty tasting, we mentioned this to the owner, and he kindly did not add it to our bill. friday night is live piano night, im not keen so will avoid. place to small for live music. will try again with other friends, but I think it will take some doing to beat the former owners of this establishment.

Walked down to the local as it’s under new management, so wanted to see how its changed. The new landlord is really trying to increase trade by tidying the gardens and smartening up the signage.

Había una buena variedad de ofertas especiales en la junta y el nuevo menú es razonable. Nuestra comida (scampi) estaba delicioso, la comida estaba caliente, abundante y se sirve con una ensalada sabrosa vestidos en el lateral. Un buen añadido era el Piano Man jugando música en vivo que hace cada viernes. Sin duda volveré. Mi única crítica/recomendación es - por favor no esperes clientes para pedir comida en el bar! Hemos venido por una comida y quiere ser servida en la mesa. También es injusto para la gente que viene en el pub puramente por una bebida tendrá que esperar y esperar mientras un gran pedido de comida está siendo colocado.

On my last night in Cambridge I had intended to go and have a pint with some friends in the various village pubs. We came to the Rose and Crown at 10.30pm on a Saturday night. All the lights were on and the door was open, yet we were greeted by the landlord with the words, “we are closed, that is why the door is closed”. Sorry... how could we enter the pub if the door was closed? Rude and terrible customer service.

Sunday lunch for 5 . Lovely big table , good choice on menu and great value. Portions are huge with plenty of vegetables. Service very efficient and polite - always checking if more drinks needed. Nice atmosphere. Treacle and Ginger tart with custard was devine !!

Went with a group of girls. Very good food. Simply enormous portions. Very friendly service. Great value. However, it's about to change owners. A great shame.

Had lunch here last week and as usual it was excellent. Menu has lots of choice, not cheap, but you get what you pay for. Service is good, and friendly waiting staff. Lovely wine too. It will be a sad day when the present occupants...

Came here with my partner and motherinlaw for Sunday lunch. We've been before but first time for mum in law. The food was delicious, roast beef, belly pork and salmon. Cannot fault it. The service was efficient, polite and friendly and we were certainly not rubbished. Cannot recommend this lovely pub enough and we will definitely be back. Well done folks. We all chose different options - roasts, fish and vegetarian and all were delicious and portion sizes were ample. Excellent range of desserts.

Have visited the Rose & Crown twice recently. Once for dinner and once for drinks. On the plus side the food is lovely and the pub is cosy. The big negative is that it is all too rushed. When we were dining the waiter was hovering and made us feel uncomfortable. When we sat drinking, all of a sudden the curtains were closed around us and the tables and chairs re-arranged for the next day. The pub was empty before 10pm - I wonder why! It's a real shame as it doesn't make me want to rush back.

I have dined at the Rose and Crown for lunches and evening meals, including Sunday lunches and all have been excellent. - I would now review them as on excellent pub for all occasions following the wonderful wake they provided for my Mum. The atmosphere, attention to detail and obviously the food make it the best possible choice for such an important event. - It would seen that Vic, Amanda and team can turn their skills to suit every occasion. - What was an emotional time for us was made less stressful knowing we were in such good hands. - A huge thank you to all from all the family.

We were staying at a local hotel, table booked via website easily along with instructions as to walking from hotel to pub. I was nervous as this has mixed reviews - shouldn't have worried at all ! Staff were friendly and efficient, food was very good with a good choice, one of our party has a food allergy which was noted and worked around by chef who adapted the meal with no difficulty. My only comment would be serve the food on a hot plate to allow a leisurely meal. A lovely find and a great evening. Thank you - we will recommend .

We went for a a family Sunday lunch. It was great. I am not a big fan of Sunday lunch in a pub, because, to be honest, my wife and I could d o a better job, however neither of us could do as fine a job as Vic the chef at The Rose and Crown. We have eaten at ta couple of other pubs where Vic was the chef, and the food was always great. Now he is at the R & C it is also grand.The staff were young and polite, only fault is that they were a bit slow at noticing when we were wanting a new round of drinks.QWe recommend booking, as it gets booked u. The beer is good, with it being aan Everards pub it is one of the only laces in the area to get a lovely pint of Tiger, one on the best beers in Britain.The pub is clean and tidy.The WCs are also clean and tidy

We received a warm welcome from the owners to their beautifully decorated and furnished pub restaurant. Plenty of choice on the menu, great service and food.

As always the food was exceptional on Sunday and the welcome as warm as ever. We love the Rose and Crown.

Good quality and quantity meals. Apparently the fish pie had a good amount of fish in it and was delicious, my haddock and chips was of hoped for quality and better than hoped for quantity. My partner didn't want the chocolate sauce on the ice cream with brandied cherries, I jokingly said that you can put it on mine, which they did! The atmosphere was relaxed, there was good space between tables, the waitress was attentive with a ready smile. The toilets were very clean. The music was low so we could hear ourselves talk. The beer was good but limited choice. I would recommend anyone to come here.

In the past we'd always avoided the Rose and Crown - we'd never found it particularly friendly. Now Vic and Amanda have taken over things have changed, radically, for the better. The furnishings have changed and the awful "breakfast bar" which was blocking access to the bar has gone (hip-hip hurrah), elsewhere the furnishing is good quality and comfortable and the decor subtly interesting with books and pictures giving a homely feel. We went on Friday, early evening, and were lucky and managed to get a table due to a cancellation - otherwise they were fully booked. I had the fish pie special which was more fish than either potato or sauce - a pleasant change, while my dining partner had pork off the regular menu - again a good meaty dish. Neither dish was overcooked with nice crisp vegetables. Don't bother is you want all the goodness boiled out of your vegetables. Cost was very reasonable.The guest ales were also well keptWe'll definitely be back

Enjoyed the perfect family birthday celebration. There were seven of us but service was first class and good choice of menu. Food was fresh and cooked to perfection. Lovely desserts!!! Highly recommend but do book.

18I would like to give a review but we never got the chance! Turned up on FrIday evening at 7:00pm (2nd September 2016) without booking, so we were prepared to wait, and asked for table for five. Many tables were reserved with signs on the table but several with four seats were not. Unfortunately, the rather flustered lady behind the bar said 'we're really busy, we always are'! So no, 'we'll try and squeeze you in' or 'could you wait a while and have a drink first'? We took the 'we always are' as 'and don't come back', so we won't. Someone needs to look up the word hospitality. We concur with another reviewer that the lady behind the bar was not welcoming at all. We stepped over the road to The Phoenix for a lovely Chinese meal instead. The were also busy but made the effort and wise decision to squeeze us in. We enjoyed a three course meal with drinks for five ... you do the maths!

A l'extérieur de Cambridge, un pub en partie en colombage, intérieur décor typique de pub moderne. L'accueil par le staff est très agréable et professionnel. Le menu est tout aussi typique d'un pub, portion copieuse et goûteuse. Dommage, le parfum de la crème brulée m'a quelque peu échappé!

I came here with my partner for an evening meal. This pub is really nice and quirky, with lots of candles lit, pictures of Histon and lots of books. I found the staff (I believe Vic and Amanda) really friendly, polite and lovely to chat to. The pub seemed really clean and tidy! All food is homemade and made to order. We didn't have to wait long and the food was lovely!!I couldn't fault the pub at all nor the staff! Will defiantly come again with friends and family!

First time had passed several times and ignored but had friends down so thought we would give it a try. A revelation a little gem , great food , good service, friendly staff. Will be going again . Not the cheapest but well worth the price.

Visited the Rose and Crown for lunch in May and was warmly greeted on arrival and directed to a table and our drinks were bought over by a very helpful barman who recommended one of the specials.I took the Barmans advice and ordered the pie and mash and vegetables which was homemade with lovely veg and was full of beautiful chunks of beef and lovely gravy the best pie I have tasted which is saying something from someone who travels 15 miles to get butchers pies.My partner had the Scampi and she was very impressed.The bill for 2 main meals 3 pints and bottle off wine cam to £46 which was terrific value.

I've been here a few times with both friends and family and it's amazing! The first time I went I had the special, Pork Belly, and being a food snob I wasn't expecting much but it was incredible - probably the best I've ever had. It was then put on the main menu and I'm so happy about it. The decor is that of a typical pub and it has good parking. All my friends and family have never had any complaints only brilliant reviews - can't wait to go back.

Family lunch on Sunday and we havent been to the Rose & Crown in many years. Really lovely pub.The food was excellent and the ales were too. Unfortunately only one vege option which wasnt the one on the menu but that is the only down side. Definitely going back again. The young staff waiting on the table were brilliant.

Had dinner with family and the in laws. Had salmon with dill butter, was the best salmon and dill butter I've had in a long time! Everyone enjoyed their meal thoroughly!! You will need to book ahead!
