Provenance Kitchen in South Cambridgeshire

We’ve visited Provenance a few times in the summer and it is normally a treat. We popped in for lunch this week and it was really disappointing though. Firstly the restaurant was cold. I didn’t take off my coat and gloves the whole time we were there. For starter I had a pork croquette. It was a lump. The size and shape of a Gregg’s sausage roll and a really peculiar texture. I only ate half of it. For main course my husband had a lamb burger. It was left on the side for ages and almost cold. The amount of cumin in the mayo made it very peculiar. Our fries were also almost cold. My main course, pork loin, was underdone in places and over in others. It came with a gravy that wasn’t mentioned on the menu. I wouldn’t have ordered it had I known. Overall, we won’t be rushing back. Staff apologised and took the cost of the fries off our meal (£4). The experience still cost us £67. Very unimpressed.

We went for an early family supper with our son, his wife and their two small boys. From the moment we walked in we were met with a great welcome by Katy. She made sure that the children's needs were met with suitable chairs and diversions. Our waiter, Toby was very knowledgeable about the menu - which was vital as two of the party have coeliac disease and must have a strict gluten-free diet. This presented no problem for the kitchen and dishes were adapted where necessary. The children's food arrived swiftly and proved most acceptable. Our own choices were venison and steaks and they were simply perfect. The ambience and decor of the restaurant was relaxed and hospitable and we really felt at home. We will definitely return.

Stopped here for lunch on our way from Surrey/London to Wroxham on the Norfolk Broads - perfect half-way meeting point for our party of 6. Excellent hosting. We were 45 minutes early for our reservation as the traffic had not been as bad as we anticipated but our table, in the pretty sheltered courtyard, was ready for us. Excellent menu with something for everyone and everything we ordered was delicious and beautifully presented - particularly loved the mackerel! Lovely atmosphere and a very stylish setting. Service was faultless and it was excellent value for money. Terrific venue and we will definitely stop again on our next trip to the Broads.

Outstanding in every way. Great drinks selection. Interesting tasty menu. Delicious food. We couldn’t fault it and can’t wait to return.

We booked early as we had friends visiting from New Zealand. There were 6 of us and the service was superb. The food was absolutely excellent: the sardines with chilli and the beef were delicious as were the heritage tomatoes and roasted vegetables. The draft Ripcord is always great and the wines are reasonably priced with a good choice. From the warm welcome to the end of our meal it was another memorable evening.

I booked Sunday lunch on our anniversary and what an anti-climax! The building is basically a large converted hut with open plan seating. This results in a VERY noisy atmosphere. It was like trying to eat a meal and have a conversation whilst being on a coach with a load of football supporters on the way back from their team winning the FA cup at Wembley! The food was OK and I must admit the roast potatoes were the best I have had in a restaurant for a long time. The bill for two with only main course and dessert was £90.00 (no wine) which for a disappointing experience I almost begrudged paying. As in the title of my review, I preferred it when it was a burger bar!

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Providence Kitchen. The food was simple, but well-cooked and utterly delicious. I loved the Cornish Sardines, but my favourite by far was the Suffolk chicken with Nduja sauce. I will dream of that sauce for many months. Can I buy it in a jar? Good service with polite staff who were helpful. We loved that the courtyard area of the restaurant was dog-friendly. A very good and memorable meal, and we’ll be back again soon. I hope the Chicken with Nduja Sauce is still on the menu!

Pork was dry. Yorkshire pudding was like leather. Roast potatoes were great but the parsnips tasted strange and the kale was inedible. I madde it to the car park before having to rush to the toliet. Oh and I couldn't find any disabled parking.

This is an easy review. Michelin-quality food and service in a smart, stylish but still laid back restaurant. Food is immaculate, fresh, balanced. Service professional and very warm and friendly. A remarkable meal that only serves to amplify the incredible value for money. Other establishments charge far more for far less in these days.

Friends kindly offered to treat us to dinner and we chose to return to Provenance, where we had previously eaten with them 2 years earlier. The weather was beautiful and we asked whether we could move to the garden. This was easily and helpfully organised and we were warned that service might be a little slower: far from it, our waiter was so attentive and efficient with both drinks and food. The food was absolutely excellent. Two of us chose the sardines and one chose the burrata followed by two roasted vegetables and two different cuts of steak. We ordered side dishes of aubergines, spiced beets and cucumber: sadly, we over ordered as we weren't able to finish all the food and puddings were completely out of the question. The drinks are always excellent with good draught and bottled beers and an interesting but not overwhelming wine list. Thank you for a great evening, particularly to our outside waiter on Saturday 24th June.

We have just returned from the Provenance Kitchen for dinner on a Saturday night. This restaurant had been recommended by several of our friends and our experience was very disappointing to say the least. To be honest we found the menu uninspiring and unappetising. That being said, we did enjoy our starters of cornish sardines and pork croquette. Unfortunately my main course of chicken was bloody in the middle and the waiter came back to inform me that the chefs always use a thermometer to check if it is cooked - but my guess is that they put it in one side and not the other! We do not mind paying considerably more for an outstanding meal but the prices were extremely high for mediocre and badly cooked food. My elderflower presse was £9.50 - just 50p cheaper than a glass of red wine.

We visited Provenance for the first time last Sunday for the 12 - 4pm lunch slot on our first meal out since the Covid lockdown. It's rather tucked-away off-of the beaten track, but is very close to Junction 10 of the M11, and has has a large car-park. The Dining Area is roomy and well ventilated and the 'social distancing' arrangements seemed to have been well thought through. The table service was polite and efficient. We all had 'roast' meals and thoroughly enjoyed them. The vegetable selection which accompanied the meats was excellent and plentiful! Whilst the prices are perhaps on the high side (£18 for roast sirloin, £16 for roast pork loin, desserts at £8 - all with a 10% service charge added to the bill at the end), we all agreed that the quality was first class. They also offer a good range of canned craft beers and even some beers which are suitable for Vegans and gluten free. All in all a very pleasant experience which we will certainly look to repeat!

Had heard good reports of Provenance so went to try Sunday Lunch. We were greeted by a friendly waiter and promptly showed our table. Was not hurried to order which was good. Water on the table which was a nice touch. Ordered a craft lager which was a hoppy flavoured drink and extremely tasty. My wife had Ginger ale which was also good. My wife had Home cured pork with sour dough toast and balsamic pickles onions which she enjoyed. I had sea trout which was lovely. Main course was Roasted Sirloin and Leg of lamb served with a selection of roasted Vegetables and Yorkshire pudding. My beef was plentiful and excellent with a slight smoky flavour. My wife's Lamb however was tasty but slightly undercooked and with gristle which wasn't pleasant. The Veg was plentiful and tasty. Suggest a sharper knife to enable easier cutting of the meat. However it didn't detract from the overall experience and I'm sure that we will return.

Beef sensation! Me and my partner Cara had been wanting to go here for a while seeing on social media and some friends going. We have very high standards and have not found many good roast dinners in Cambridgeshire. We were very impressed with service and the food. I’ve never had beef that good before! We cannot wait to go back for an evening service and try a normal menu as well.

My first visit today; I was recommended to Provenance Kitchen and I was not disappointed. The food (I had the parsnip flatbread from the lunch menu and my friend had the cod sandwich) was tasty, well cooked and presented beautifully. The service was first class - note there is a service charge added to your bill. The atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming. I will certainly return.

We had visitors down from Scotland and they and our daughter and son in law joined us for Sunday. Our table was booked for 12.45 but I arrived early and was shown to the table with no problem. We were informed that the table had another booking at 3 but that we only had to give them a few minutes to clear and reset. No problem. The place was buzzing and had a lovely atmosphere. I had the beetroot starter which was fabulous and the sea bream (likewise). The portions are extremely generous and giving us a ‘doggy box’ for the extra veg was a lovely touch. The service was attentive but not intrusive and all in all it was a lovely start to our guests’ visit. This place is well worth a visit ( but book early to avoid disappointment!)
