Really disappointing went for a late supper, shared cheese stater took 45 minutes, both bar staff completely uninterested in checking in for drinks,or food. The service was completely awful in clearing table even after I stacked the plates for them no mention of do you require another drunk etc. Totally despondent service won't return.

Worst pub experience I’ve had in years. Don’t waste your money here. Was sat at a table with no cutlery or menus. After no one coming over to us for 15 mins we ordered our drinks at the bar and got our own menus. The table next to us was tired of waiting and ordered at the bar. When we went to do the same, no one was behind the bar so we eventually were able to flag down someone to take our order. We waited for an hour (no exaggeration) after ordering before finally being able to ask someone when our food will be ready. They suddenly brought our food over and it was room temperature at best, clearly had been waiting a good while on the side before it got to us. To top it off, no one came to take our payment so we paid at the bar. My mum did not have her glasses to read the receipt (which she mentioned) and after she paid we realised they charged us for 4 drinks worth £15 that we didn’t order. Overall this pub is awfully handled. I want to emphasise that it is not the serving staffs fault, but likely not enough staff at busy times. Just don’t go here

Those that have noted a dip in food quality should be aware that the patron chef who's name the owners are still trading off has looooooooooooooooonggggggggggggggg gone. Still a good gastro pub though, I just thought their website was very misleading if not outright deceptive.

We had a fabulous meal at the Grantchester Green Man. Everything was just that little bit different and special. Not only is the restaurant a charming place to be in, and the staff professional and attentive, but the food is delectable. When I explained my dietary needs, the staff were so helpful and I felt treated like an individual rather than just another diner. Highly recommend.

I organised a mystery tour for my partner. Thanks to him, although I had previously been to Grant Chester, I only watched the entire tv programme recently. I had to come back to see the church and the vicarage. But I also booked a table at the Green Man as I remember my previous experience when I came 9 years ago for Mother's day lunch. The weather was awful so it was nice to enter this beautifully set up dining room. We ordered our food and for once went for dishes that we might not usually order. Our waiter was exceptionally brilliant, most helpful and chatty. All the staff is genuinely lovely. We had the sausage roll, which is amazing. The brown sauce coming with is in a separate dish is flavoursome with a zingy taste. We shared the charcuterie plate with some bread, it was one of the best I had. We had a ball of Koffman fries. As we did, you ask what is this? I can tell you they are the best fries, looking more like chips, triple cooked over 12h you will ever have. I think we could have just have this for our meal. The wine I had, rosé, was one of these where you have to think if it's not red and just about remember red isn't served cold. It was excellent. As we had room for desserts, once more, our talented waiter suggested the crème brulée or the sticky toffee pudding. We had both that we shared. They are divine. The crème brulée is just perfect, thick enough with an extremely thin layer of hard caramel with dried red berries sprinkled on the top. The lightness og the sponge for the toffee pudding is just how it should be. The sauce is thick and rich, full of flavour and the beautiful ice cream on the top stands like royalty on the top of a steaming hot square of deliciousness. We accompanied these by sharing a glass of Sauternes. The double espresso ended this succulent meal. Yes, the meal was out of this world. There is certainly a chef in the kitchen who would do very well in a Masterchef competition. But it's not just that. After our wonderful experience I also found a lovely email tous morning from the team, thanking us again for coming and have dinner at the pub, and not just thank you, it was lovely to see you, something meaningful. It's not just about the dogs. Here you get the full package. My only regret is that we were unable to leave a tip. We didn't have any change and they don't keep cash on the premises. But next time. Thank you to all for having turned this very wet day into such an amazing one. We will come back.

We held our post wedding drinks here during a busy sunny Friday afternoon and evening in August. It was simply perfect. The terrace and garden area have been fully refurbished and is wonderful. The staff were friendly and efficient with 40 people in addition to their usual customers. The food in particular is delicious. Some of the group had cocktails which were very well made. The kids enjoyed exploring the meadows and it was safe for them to do so alone while the adults enjoyed the garden. All in all, I can highly recommend Vera The Green Man.

I don't normally change reviews, but in this case I feel I have to share my experience. Having had a fantastic meal in December here, we went back for a celebration meal over the weekend. However, sadly, our experience was really quite bad. Whilst the food was all okay (very overpriced), the service is what really let it down. We were forgotten about several times, we had to ask for our own menus, to have plates taken away, and we weren't given cutlery for our pudding. Despite there being plenty of staff around and the restaurant not being that busy, they mostly stood behind the bar chatting with each other. When we had to go and ask for our menus, the staff member didn't mention ever coming back to take our order even though we had clearly been waiting, only that someone 'might' be around soon. Really pretty terrible service. Such a shame considering my last experience but sadly will not be going back. December '23: Absolutely delicious meal and incredible service. The whole atmosphere was utterly wonderful. We were taken care of to the highest standards and now I’m incredibly full and happy. Thank you to the whole team!

It wasn't terrible but definitely wouldn't rush back. Overpriced. Sorry to say.

Avoid it! The saddest Sunday roast I’ve had in many years! Two generous but ever so slightly undercooked slices of beef, four very tasty but child sized roast potatoes, a decent Yorkshire pudding, some odd green leaves and close to zero gravy (if you want a real person’s portion you have to pay extra 5 quid, which is unbelievable). Where are the roasted vegetables? Where’s the gravy? Where’s the adult sized roast potatoes? And on top of that it’s a set menu which will set you back 30 quid. It’s a joke! Don’t recommend unless you want to waste your money and time.

The scotch eggs are sublime as is the cauliflower soup with onion bhaji. However everything else was very good but a little odd. As nibbles you’re offered crisps on the menu, naively we felt these would be little homemade thin crisps with a seasoning but no it’s a packet of crisps served in a bowl! The food is great you can’t fault it but it’s served in a very clinical manner. Steaks arrive in the centre of the plate, there is nothing else at all on the plate. No sprinkle of anything, no steak butter melting, not even a small bit of green. The chips arrive and yes they are very nice. But that’s your steak dinner which is literally steak and chips. No sauces were offered, but you can have a sauce with a burger. It was all very boring on the eye. We ordered seasonal veg to have something to go with the steaks but the season must have been from Israel as we had a whole bowl of just French Beans and given it’s February we didn’t feel this seasonal or local. Deserts were lovely as was the service probably 3/5 is unfair but for the price we just expected something with a little more…

It has been beautifully redecorated inside, with tasteful decor and even the loos are now gorgeous! They’ve put a new bar and serving area in the back garden, revived the garden itself and put soft tasteful lights throughout. We now look from our home to see a thing of beauty and tempting draw for the occasional meal out. Beautiful pub but a warning to anyone with allergies / intolerances, you have to give prior notice (small text on menu online)… with no dairy free options i had to awkwardly sit with olives and bread, then found out afterwards that the “pub side” of the restaurant did chips and sandwiches?! The setting inside an old country pub is really cosy and relaxed with a classic wraparound bar area and a small intimate dining room. We had to wait a short time before we could be seated but that gave us time to chat and have a drink. The food was presented beautifully and there's huge amounts of skill both in the cooking and the concepts. There are 4 options in each course and a few of the menu items change at a time. I had Quail to start, Duck as a main and a Dog based dessert. It was all beautifully cooked and very tasty. We'd love to go again.

Wow. What an incredible meal from start to finish! Very difficult to park, it's a shame because I imagine it's one of the larger reasons people may struggle to travel here to try. Parking sharing with the nearby green king would do wonders! The waitresses were incredibly kind and jolly throughout service - very helpful when asked questions. The starter, main and dessert's value for money was off the charts. For £30, a very filling main and a Michelin star taste is incomparable. I've paid 20 quid for a dry and tasteless burger at Greene King pubs. I can't stress enough: you MUST try this place at least once. Set aside about 70 quid per person for 3 courses and a drink and you won't regret it!

This was our first trip to The Green Man and we were aware it had been recently refurbished. They have done a beautiful job of both the interior and outside areas. We sat next to the bar and it was lovely and cosy. We popped in at about 4 on on a Sunday for a bite and the food was delicious. My husband and I shared the chorizo and black pudding scotch egg and the lamb flatbread and both were delicious - with the lamb being a real showstopper. Our daughter had the chicken goujons and chips. Chips were lovely and chicken goujons seemed perfectly nice too. The wine and beer went down well, and there were a number of good options (albeit more limited for by the glass wine). There were two points that could have been improved, however: 1. It was not clear that it was bar service (which is, of course, totally fine in itself). However, there were about three or four staff members milling at the bar (who were all very nice) but it would have been helpful if we had either been told on sitting down to come to the bar when ready or if someone had spotted us waiting and told us to pop up. This is a fairly minor point, but I think just good practice to make it obvious. 2. When paying at the bar I was a bit taken aback at the cost as it was more than I was expecting. I asked the guy putting it through the till to check and it transpired that 12.5% service had been added on automatically. I have no problem with tipping in a pub where restaurant service is received, but it seemed a bit much to add this on with no warning when there was no table service and at the point of paying we hadn’t received any service as such! Without me asking, this was removed, but only because I was surprised by the amount. In general, I would only expect service to be added (if at all - much better to leave the amount to customer discretion) when a bill is received at the end of a meal. Overall, we would definitely return. Lovely food and atmosphere, albeit on the expensive end at £62 for two medium glasses of wine, two pints, a child’s meal and two small plates (before any tip/service charge).

Very nice atmosphere and lovely staff. Given how expensive it was, however, I was expecting something special and I was extremely disappointed. £29 for a roast and the massive, red slab of beef was so gristly and tough that it was barely edible. Doesn’t come with veg either - it’s an extra £6 per portion for those. And then they stick a 12.5% service charge on top. So £40+ for a pretty shoddy Sunday roast.

No parking means this venue won’t be on our bucket list. Street parking with every other catering establishment in the vicinity, four not forgetting events at the village hall, in the main with reg log machines means either a longish walk if fit and able during the day,, field in village small entry fee) We just popped for drinks only and to see what had been done with the new tenants. Everything was well set out and a big improvement on the past, dining room now has a white ceiling as opposed to dark brown so a whole lot lighter. The bar staff member had to leave the bar unattended to go and fetch the orange juice from the cellar, so still finding their feet. The outside part and garden was delightful, with private booths for private parties and a lot of steps to access but the pavements narrow in Grantchester and for the money and talents of which it appears many, private parking should be provided. Or a taxi both ways, or a bus once an hour and we no longer cycle. Parking at the Vera Green Man cannot be provided because there is no room for it. Street parking can’t be reserved, too much of a gamble for us.

We had heard rumblings about this venue in the local area so thought we’d give it a go. From what we saw and ate the noice that this restaurant is making is only going to get louder in the coming months. It’s not often do you visit a venue who clearly care about the quality of every element. We entered into a 400 year old pub which has been beautifully renovated. Attentive bar staff served us quickly and offered us menus. While the small plate offerings in the bar looked lovely we wanted the restaurant. A separate menu; small but packed with a selection of dishes which were hard to pick from. Opted for mushrooms and venison to start, cod and beef Pithivier for mains and fig and treacle tart for dessert. The aubergine canapé was a nice opening touch too! There was theatre with the cod dish being lightly smoked under a glass dome (revealed at the table), sauce was delivered by the chef. I cannot fault the cooking of each dish it was a real delight. All too often the big chains lose the finer details of making a guest feel special and delivering great food. However, Chef Vera and his team are making the right noises to suggest that this is a place to watch glad we found it before everyone else does.

Love this place, the only restaurant around here that creates food that actually interests me, without overwhelming. The portions are not huge, true, but that’s fine by me, as you can try more of them, and you leave feeling full, but not uncomfortably so. The starter was amazing (venison tartare), the beef Wellington was incredibly tender and flavoursome, and the affogato with malted vanilla just amazing. Just need to have a better wine by the glass selection, more in keeping with the fine food, and to be fair they are just about to change. The service and ambience is faultless without being stuffy. And the regular menu changes are so welcome, keeps me coming back.

Good food BUT very expensive and default 12.5% service charge, when the service isn't great, is unacceptable and meant the bill for 4 people was over £300. Not only have they emptied what was a lovely pub, with some strange pretensions of being something more than are, but now they don't take cash! My meal was ok but biblically expensive. The lack of cash payments definitely means I won't be going back. Luckily there are pubs nearby, such as The plough in coton which do better food at lower prices and still take cash.

This review is for the restaurant specifically, not the bar or its food. Creative/innovative menu with a limited number of choices. Beautifully presented and well prepared. Pricey. A major criticism is that portions are microscopic. Understandable for first courses but main dishes were insufficiently sized. Dining room is small and intimate. Unfortunately our second time here, our dining experience was marred by the din from one very loud group; that wasn’t restaurant’s fault. However the staff (which is trained and adept) should have tried to diplomatically manage the group to lower the volume. Dining room was not particularly full but it took 1/2 hour for our main dishes to arrive. As the host to our friends, we were embarrassed by these problems.

The Vera Green Man is a fantastic pub in the heart of Grantchester and is definitely worth the visit for an amazing meal and cosy atmosphere. The Chefs Barry and Sebastian have so much passion and creative flair for their dishes, and this really comes through in the taste and presentation of the food. In the restaurant the menu is seasonal, varied, and worth the prices, with personal favourites being the French Onion Soup, the Lamb Rump, and the Treacle Tart. On the bar food menu the Shooter Sandwich is a must try. Barry and Sebastian source local ingredients and are always designing new combinations of flavours, so it is worth visiting often to try the new additions to the menu. The rest of the pub is very cosy and friendly, with a large outdoor garden and covered patio space. Behind the bar Matt and Liv always provide excellent service, and the wait staff are also friendly and attentive, with Toby being especially nice. It is definitely worth visiting the pub and you should experience the restaurant as the food is always excellent.

The Green Man is a Grantchester institution and it was a sad day when the place closed several years ago. It is great to see the place given a new lease of life, although it's a bit less spit n sawdust than it was and more gastro than pub. Notwithstanding this, it's still nice to see an old run down pub brought back to life and ...it gives a local competition a run for their money as well. Service needs a bit of work with several quite young and inexperienced staff all looking a little blankly at one another whenever an order was placed. But expect this will improve over time!

Overcharged by £8 because the menu showed one price and the computer claimed another. When I pointed out the discrepancy the manager was offhand - and only reluctantly agreed to a refund. So, the ‘service’ one star is especially for him. Get to smile school, dude! And - top tip - apologise for the error …. mistakes happen and customer discomfort can be offset by charm. The wait staff were smiley, efficient, trying their best to provide a welcoming experience … and worth four stars. The cheeseboard and beer in the new garden were lovely on a sunny day.

A relatively newly refurbished restaurant in the Green Man pub in Granchester. This pub used to serve more pub grub but this was a huge step up, proper gourmet new European cuisine. The presentation of the food was excellent and the maitre’d and staff were very welcoming and knowledgeable. We were surprised to be served an amuse buche as part of our meal and this really highlighted the step up from basic pub grub you are getting here. The decor in the restaurant and the lighting in the main pub area was still a bit drab and a dark but did not detract from the food. The restaurant itself was open plan and this was good as it made it feel more airy than the bar area but was a two edged sword in that you could here the conversations of the other clientele easily which made it perhaps a bit too intimate. This wouldn’t have been bad but we were sat next to a table where one person had a particularly loud voice so detracted from the cosy and intimate feel of the restaurant. The food itself was excellent if you were expecting a more modern European fair rather than basic pub nosh. Reasonably priced with a good selection of beers and wines. There was an outside seating area but no car park as far as we could tell (the old pub had parking behind it but this was not easily navigable in a medium sized family SUV). Luckily adequate parking was there on the high street. We were told that the menu changes frequently so this is a place I’d like to revisit.

The Green Man of old has closed and reopened in this refurbished setting in the picturesque Village of Grantchester. Part of the car park has been covered over and now reflects a decked patio, leading onto the beer garden that gives out to the river. The selection of beers and gins is adequate. The food was good, although only a limited selection was available to people who did not book in the restaurant, and it would be nice to see this extended to the patio users. You can make with it as you will - come for food or just a drink and you will be well served. Definitely 1 to keep on the list for visitors.

Terrific place with a lovely atmosphere and very close to the camb river. Nevertheless it is small and you'll probably be standing outside, not precisely by the River.

Spare the rod and spoil the child We are pleased that this pub is open again but our last 3 visits deserve a 1 star or below 1rst :drinks and pub hot and cold snacks were clearly if I had gone to our empty fridge ( and that's exactly why we had gone out ) to make up plates from old dried up ham ,an old pot of olives ,condiments and frozen bits thats defrost badly... Beer was ok service was poor 2nd : restaurant for 2 adults Service was nervous and stiff food was in ridiculous small portions clearly trying to give the feel of an exclusive restaurant sadly it is the food quality that was lacking. Bizarrely the old cook popped his head out of the kitchen angrily but did not dare going by tables to ask if customer were pleased with his cooking.... 3rd : restaurant for a party Service "assessed" us as "casual" and tried to encouraged us to eat in pub part knowing that menu already we had to insist to seat down in restaurant part the pompous and pretentious suit looked depicted no need for such fuss to serve bad food! We had most of the main dishes between all of us they all had a dark bitter sauce that was most unpleasant again quality and size portion was an issue. One of us simply had to return his dish to the kitchen No fuss was made then thanks! Service is done by amateurs The young cook helper from Africa ? burst out of the kitchen and venture in his gears half way into the room then abruptly returned to kitchen. What happens in the kitchen should stay in the kitchen ! Food is just not well cooked a more simple fare of good quality meat/fish and veggies will go far better in this decor hell! they even screwed up potatoes Another unpleasantry :older men trying to swayed their much younger escorts makes it uncomfortable with children 3strikes you are out!

Absolutely gutted about what's happened to this pub. They've gone very upmarket and fine dining and the atmosphere was stuffy. This pub used to welcome plumbers and landed gentry laughing in the same crowded, fun bar area. Now you may as well be in restaurant 22. I don't think that will happen again, not like it did. I struggle to see how they'll fill the vast back garden at the eye watering prices on the menu. Some simple things like a burger in the bar area with my teen were not possible. Snacks only in the bar apparently. The dog was welcome which was very helpful and kind. Granchester already has the Rupert Brooke. What this pub needed was needed was a refresh, a reliable owner and a family atmosphere. Not Michelin star vibes. It honestly felt like the bar staff haf been told not to talk to punters. Everyone in uniform. Towels over arms. It almost felt silver service. I guess I'm not the target market, but that's another pub ruined, and we don't get them back. I appreciate no one can survive on wet sales alone, those days are gone, but I want a pub to have the atmosphere that all are welcome to mix (the original point of a shared living room). No atmosphere, crazy expensive food, weird vibe.

We have been waiting A LONG TIME for someone to have the vision to fix up and reopen this pub! They have struggled to get started, but it’s well worth the wait! The new head chef Barry Vera serves up an amazing menu. This is NOT pub food, it is FINE DINING and is reflected in the pricing. Our fear is that people will go in expecting affordable pub grub and it will not last. Our hope is that it will make a name for itself and Vera will continue to wow us with impressive gastronomic delights!

I've visited the boot on a number of occasions in the past. My most recent visit tells me one thing, this pub has seriously gone downhill. The place is clearly understaffed with the staff rushing around like there's no tomorrow. Funnily I was actually ignored for over 10mins at the bar while patrons who arrived later on were served before me. I had a good chuckle to myself as this something I've never experienced in a Cambridge pub. Finally the food, I ordered my go to favourite the sticky toffee pudding it was........Abysmal. The quality of the pudding has significantly declined, they dont even serve ice cream with it anymore. Just some sort of whipped cream. Dear Boot it was good knowing you but you're not the same anymore, time to move on!

The starter was absolutely wonderful, but took about an hour to show up, then another hour between starter-main course. The pie wasn't great and the mashed potato felt like it'd been under the heat lamp all day
