Having dined here several times and never been disappointed, I’m sad to leave this review. The food was ‘ok’ and expected standard of a pub chain such as Wetherspoons. But, it is not Wetherspoons or their prices. The steak (medium rare) - burnt on one side, chewy and covered in salt and pepper. Not a nice flavour combination! The burgers were mediocre. Chunky, home cooked chips have been replaced with overly salted thin fries. All food was over seasoned - let your customers season their food to their liking! The atmosphere was lack lustre compared to previous visits where we’ve been made to feel welcome and rapport with servers good. None of this during this visit. Such a shame as it was our ‘go to’ for a special meal and now is overpriced and bog standard. We won’t visit again until reviews change and wish we’d seen them before booking a table for a birthday celebration.

We have dined here numerous times in the past and were happy to return. Sadly, our experience this time was disappointing. The catch of the day was mackerel which is an inexpensive plentiful fish. I asked what the portions might be and was told that the usual offering was 2 medium sized fillets. I was surprised to be given just one small fillet with a moderate amount of vegetables. Not very good value for money. My wife declined the catch of the day in favour of fish cakes but they tasted very little of fish! The Captain's Table is a lovely restaurant above The Sloop Inn overlooking St Ives harbour. It offers the same menu (at the same prices) as the pub below and could do well to go a little more up market.

We have eaten here several times before and were so looking forward to a return visit, however we were totally disappointed. Listening to pop music didn’t set a relaxed restaurant vibe. Staff were friendly but definitely need some training, not great to listen to their conversations on drunken nights out. Food was mediocre. We were going to order the cheese board for dessert and glad we didn’t, seeing it placed in front of other guests, a trio of small slices of cheese with Jacobs crackers just didn’t warrant £16.95.

Fantastic find for a special birthday treat. This is an exclusive small dining room above the Sloop Inn. The menu is the same fabulous fresh food and cooked in the same kitchen as the pub but it is quiet, smart and a fabulous classy ambience upstairs. We were lucky to have the best, romantic window table in the house, the most delicious fresh cooked food and fantastic friendly service. I had Mackerel Pate to start and the Fish Pie which was divine. My husband had fresh cooked Mussels and the most tender and flavoursome Steak he has ever had, and he's had a lot ! The table next to us had a couple of the seafood/fish platters to share which really looked amazing, brimming with fresh crab, lobster, prawns etc. We really enjoyed our meal and the ambience would definitely recommend to others and visit again.

We always go to the Captain’s Table when we visit St Ives. We booked for Monday and had a lovely meal at a window table. Had monkfish and prawn Thai Red Curry and catch of the day which was excellent. Booked again for this evening with the same excellent window seat. My wife had Mac and cheese - very good. I had “our very special fish pie” - extremely disappointing. An inch and a half of tasteless mashed potato on a quarter of an inch of fish sauce containing a few bits of mashed salmon. No pieces of local white fish as advertised. Maybe it was just a bad day at the office but I certainly wouldn’t recommend the fish pie to anyone.

A nice little place tucked just off the harbour. We fell lucky and got a window table so that was lovely. Not much to see if you weren’t next to the only window. Nice vibe though with very attentive staff. We were excited to try here after reading all the reviews but to be fair it was average food, albeit very fresh and quickly cooked. The burger was nicely made but slightly bland and the skin on fries were well cooked but I prefer proper chips - not a fan - so that’s down to personal choice. My husband said the fish was nice but the batter was lacking seasoning. Both were served super quickly after ordering and it was a great service all round. We probably would come again but only if we could sit in the window :-)

Went in on spec as we had gone into St Ives to see Santa arrive on the Lifeboat. We had a nicely chilled white wine and chilled bottle of tap water. For the water, we were given nice tumblers with ice and a slice of lemon. The little touches…. My main was buttermilk chicken burger. Chicken is an everyday thing - but this was cooked to perfection. Not over cooked and dry, but spot on, buttery and moist. My wife had the catch of the day - lemon sole. Again, cooked to perfection. And then we get to my desert. Read and butter pudding with custard. Holy moly was it good! And to be honest, the pudding serving was three times the size that you would normally expect. As a sweet man I was in heaven! One of those on the spur of the moment fists that turn out so well. Top job everyone at the Sloop and The Captains Table.

Myself and wife recently visited this restaurant and were lured to this by the seafood platter we had seen on the website/menu. For starter we shared the mussels and scallops. The mussels were of the highest quality whilst the sauce that they were in was also good . The scallops we received were unfortunately not as good quality and given this restaurant specialises in seafood you would expect better, The scallops were certainly not cheap and these were not reflective of the price. The seafood platter we received had half a Cornish lobster, tiger prawns, cray fish tails, smoked salmon and mussels and crab meat. The presentation was OK however the seafood platter was similar to the scallops in terms of quality. On the menu it mentions that all the seafood is locally sourced and fresh. Truthfully I suspect the lobster and prawns were not locally sourced. These had the hallmarks of frozen and not fresh and of supermarket quality. We found the platter slightly disappointing. Service was good and the 2 girls serving us were helpful and we were happy with the service received.

Nice quiet little restaurant tucked away above a busy pub. Service was efficient and friendly and food was very good. We had mussels, scallops and salt and pepper squid to start. Kids had the burgers (which looked really nice) and we had the seafood platter. All tasted super fresh and well cooked. Final bill was reasonable. Atmosphere was ok. The restaurant has very low ceilings which added a bit of quirkiness. Decor was a tad on the bland side and lighting a bit flat. A few small changes could make this place have more of a wow factor. They do however have some artwork on display which can be purchased which was interesting.

Only made a reservation on the day but definitely worth booking ahead as the food is so good. The downside is parking is a nightmare in St Ives, there is a small car park behind the restaurant but it’s not easy to access. Anyway, all that said, we both had steak which was lovely with all the perfect accompaniments, button mushrooms, onion rings, nice fresh plain salad ( love that carrot and onion also in there) Meals came with a free bottle of wine so very good value for quality food. Good friendly staff, very efficient, quirky little place with a stairway up , watch out for the low ceiling!

I'm wary of ordering mussels in restaurants - but as this was the first night of opening after lockdown restrictions were lifted I figured they would be fresh and gave them a chance. So glad I did! The finest I have ever had! That was my starter. My wife had the mackerel pate starter, which she said was delicious. I had the 10oz rib eye steak for my main course, which was beautifully cooked - rare and full of flavour and so tender. It came with a generous portion of chips - the menu called them fries, but to me that means the thin overcooked hollow flavourless things served by the big burger chains. These were nothing like that. Big, crisp on the outside, fluffy potato on the inside. Top marks. They do themselves an injustice, calling them fries. My wife had seafood risotto, which she loved. Great big prawns, large slices of fish in a huge tasty rice dish.By the end of that, we were too stuffed to manage any dessert, which I regret, given the quality of the dishes we had. Highly recommended.

Booked this restaurant 2 months ago and confirmed it 3 days before we arrived, but when we got there on time, there was not a table for us as they were so full, despite being told 3 days earlier we had the front table overlooking the harbour. We were left waiting by someone’s table while the supervisor ( who was lovely) went away to try and sort. We were embarrassed by this so offered to go for a walk for them to sort. We came back 15 minutes later to be shown to a table, ( not the original table we were offered but a table by a side window, where they have moved 2 people to another table? After ordering our meal it took over an hour to come (main course) however I have to say the meals were absolutely delicious, although my husband didn’t get all of his? They were just so busy in there as the restaurant was jam packed with diners. We didn’t have time for a desert as our taxi was due, but were given a complimentary coffee each. The supervisor was so very apologetic at the wait time and table not being ready. Having said this the food was exceptional, good value and lots of choice, and we would not hesitate to go back. I guess they must have been short staffed and they did the best they could. Xx

We opted then to share the mackerel pate which was lovely & shared two mains between us fish cakes & crab, prawn & mussel linguine. The linguine sauce was a delight, fish cakes were average. Both were very friendly and helpful. The seafood platter delicious for £43, with king prawns, smoked salmon, crayfish, crab, lobster and mussels. The mussels mariniere were the best I've ever had! A minor issue was the calamari in the entree was incredibly small. For dessert we had the creme brulee and chocolate tart- equally delicious! We were staying for a long weekend in St Ives and came across The Captain's Table Restaurant which is above The Sloop Inn public house. The restaurant is quaint with a low beamed ceiling covered in fairy lights, it is beautiful. We ate twice here, on our first evening I ordered smoked mackerel pate, lobster red thai curry with jasmine rice, my husband ordered fillet steak plus trimmings and we shared a cheese board. We both agreed that the food was some of the best we have eaten, as was the service by two lovely ladies. We enjoyed our meals so much we returned two nights later. My husband ordered the Sunday roast beef and I ordered 'catch of the day', which was hake served with new potatoes and salad, again we shared a cheese board. My husband thoroughly enjoyed his roast beef and my hake was perfectly cooked. The service again was excellent provided by a member of the downstairs bar staff who was filling in as the original staff had phoned in sick, he did a great job considering in his own words 'he was in uncharted territory'. Drinks were good too, they serve some nice unusual flavoured gins. We loved our visits to this restaurant, it serves excellent tasty well cooked food, service is great, staff are friendly and knowledgeable about the dishes on the menu, location is great overlooking the beautiful beach. We will most definitely visit again when we are next in St Ives, we rate it first class !!

We had been debating where to eat on our last night and decided on this restaurant. We had a table overlooking the harbour. The service was excellent and all 3 courses exceeded expectations. The mackerel pate, fish and chips and cheeseboard were perfect.

We booked for dinner at the hotel reception even though it was January. The staff were all friendly and chatty. The room above the Sloop pub is nicely decorated with comfy chairs and fairy lights. I ordered the roasted cod with potato and green beans and a tomato sauce which was tasty. My husband ordered the mixed grill which was good and not too filling. For dessert I had the crème brulee with biscuits,- lovely and my husband had the cheese and biscuits,- a variety of different delicious cheeses. We both enjoyed our dinner,- we thought it was reasonably priced.

I went with other half and elderly mum last night. What a surprise! The service was wonderful, very friendly staff gave the impression nothing was too much trouble. We had 2 steaks cooked to perfection (and free bottle of wine if you do this- with an opportunity to upgrade to a more expensive bottle if you wish). My husband had the hake which he really enjoyed. The decor was also very pretty with the fairy lights around and so altogether we had a great night out that was very reasonably priced. Would fully recommend.

The first time we have eaten here despite many years of visiting St Ives, my passion for Hake was the initial reason as we had not managed to find it on a menu and only had one night left of our break. We read the board outside and saw lots to like so we booked a table. We were greeted by a charming, warm and friendly lady who immediately felt like a friend, our drinks sorted, ice cold Marlborough Sauvignon for me and a beer for Mr B which the lovely lady went to fetch from the bar for him as not on the upstairs menu, I had the homemade tomato soup which was thick and rich, hubby had the terrine, I then had pan roasted Hake served over potatoes with a Goan Curry and delicious char grilled courgette, other half opted for the Ribs...shame we did't have the dogs with us, 10 huge meaty ribs...it was a struggle but he managed it !

A quaint and unexpected restaurant, with extremely low ceilings. The ambience is superb, and the views (if you are lucky enough to get a window seat) breathtaking. The food is remarkably good, with an enviable range of seafood. But for me, my, oh my, does this chef know what to do with a steak! The service is spot on, you are made to feel special and valued. All this for the most reasonable prices. But, don't tell anyone. We don't want everyone cluttering the place up, and not be able to get in!

This is the upper floor of the ancient Sloop Inn. We had breakfast here and the choice was good - including pastries, fresh fruit, yogurts, full english, smoked salemon, fresh mackerel etc). Efficient service, sea views - but VERY low beamed ceilings!

We have just been for a wonderful meal at the Captain’s Table. They were able to change our booking with very short notice although they were very short staffed. Nicola was on her own but worked so efficiently that you felt you had personal service. She was thorough, thoughtful and met our every need. The ambience was special and the view amazing. The food was fantastic too!! The mussels and ribs were yummy!!

Had a marvellous meal at The Captain's Table. The fillet steak was sublime. Could have had another it if hadn't been for the fact that I was full to bursting!

One of the most bizarre and awful experience here. Came in for lunch with family and the spotty little glass collector/“waiter” made it his mission to make us feel completely unwelcome (I see that someone else had a similar experience judging by a previous review). Practically spat at us when we asked for a menu and then when we tried to place an order (as they had rushed us to do so as the kitchen was about to close), we had this oiky little teenager completely ignore us. We asked if he was serving and he replied rudely “no.” And kept smiling to himself like a psychotic little creep. The rest of the staff could hear the interaction and didn’t seem to care. He kept shaking his head at us with a strange smirk when we asked if he could maybe ask someone else to serve us. You would have thought we had done something terrible but we were just trying to order food. Completely bizarre and insanely rude behaviour. Would have been okay if the food was somewhat decent but it was average at best and left one member of our group with a dodgy stomach. The place is filthy and seems to get by based on the fact it’s in a busy location so makes 0 effort to make your experience pleasant. I don’t even bother to leave reviews normally but it was such a horrific experience that I felt I had to warn others. Avoid avoid avoid unless you want your day ruined by some self-entitled little creep and a dirty, sub-standard pub. There are far nicer places to go to in the area.

We visted the Captains table ,the restaurant area of the Sloop Inn as a party of 6 for my sons 17th birthday and were not disappointed. The restaurant is only small so I would advise booking especially if you are a larger group . The views are great as you are in an elevated position. The staff were lovely and the food was beautiful. My son had steak as did his dad ,my other son had the rib meal which was huge ,we had 2 meals from the kids menu and I ordered chicken kiev from the specials menu , I have never had a kiev as big .Everything was delicious and nothing was left.It was great value in a great location and we wouldn't hesitate to eat here again

Ate here twice last week while in St Ives. The food is very good and prices reasonable. Only downside is you have to order at the bar which involves queuing and moves very slowly.

When we asked if there were any tables available, they shuffled the tables around to accommodate us. The evening just got better and better, the menu choices were vast and Roberta, was on hand to help us with our choices. Roberta, and Brooke couldn’t do enough for us. They made us feel like friends. The following evening we were looking around for somewhere to eat, but couldn’t find anything that could meet The Captains Table for its menu and prices, so we called Roberta to see if we could get a table. She then called us back to say that some of her regulars would be finished in about 45 minutes! I then ordered the fish pie with normal potato topping, which the chef made especially for me! Another superb evening, the food is amazing and hospitality second to none. A special thank you to Roberta, Brooke and Faith

Eaten here 2 nights and will go again before our one week holiday is over. Great food, good portions and nice and hot. Had the rib eye and the steak pie - both very good. Really nice atmosphere; Nicky is a fantastic waitress - really friendly but very efficient and professional; I really hope the owners realise what an assett to the business she is.

Popped in for lunch on Saturday with a baby in tow. The main bar was quite full, thinking the other patrons might like to continue their experience in peace we asked to go into the empty restaurant half. The staff even brought a highchair through to complete our private dinning experience. Good value simple food, we had jacket potato and burger with chips.

Popped in for a lovely lunch, and stayed longer than planned in the end. Friendly staff, efficient yet relaxed atmosphere with a wide selection of food choices and gins! Shame the weather was dire or we'd have loved to spend the afternoon in the garden.

We just had a private party in the tipi. The pizzas were to die for, the chips equally so, washed down with a perfect pint of Neck. Oil The young man waiting on us couldn’t have worked any harder to deliver a perfect experience. Really helpful and atttentive Many thanks to the Porterhouse team.
