I went for lunch at Roots today for the first time, (on recommendation) and enjoyed a delicious lunch and experienced friendly service. The quiche, (red pepper, bacon and leek) was excellent and my guest very much enjoyed her cheese and ham toastie. I was also impressed with the range and quality of goods in the Farm Shop and made a number of purchases. I will definitely return.

We have been visiting Roots as a couple for many years but have noticed a steady reduction in menu choice and portion size. The panini's have disappeared from the menu only to be replaced with Toasties which appeared to be cooked on a Breville. overcooked. flat and tasteless and poor value for money. On our last visit I had the Quiche but was disappointed in the portion size and the salad that accompanied it and felt that for £10.95 was far too much for a small portion with a few leaves of salad, half slice of orange and a tiny metal container of coleslaw. We have enjoyed the quality of the food in the past but regretably will not be visiting again.

Had a lovely lunch this afternoon with great service! The ladies were very welcoming and friendly. We both had a cheese and ham scone-which; incredible whoever had that idea! Kay suggested her brownie Sunday which was amazing! There was so much choice of cake but her brownie creation was fabulous! We can’t wait to come back to try her lemon meringue one! Thanks again Kay!

We called around 3pm for a late lunch/snack & grocery/gift shopping as the website stated the cafe was open until 4pm, the shops open until 5pm. We went to the cafe first. A friendly assistant unlocked the Reading Nook as we had our dogs with us & reassured us that we could order food. We were going to order soup or toasties. My father called into the cafe to find out the flavour of soup on offer which was curried but came out as he didn't fancy that. I went into the cafe to order and was told by an abrupt & unwelcoming older woman that there was nothing available other than the soup as everything had been turned off. She rudely advised me that the gentleman (my father in his 70's), had just asked about the soup but "turned his nose up" when she told him it was curried. I'm sure that most people react similarly if they don't fancy something - it was not a malicious act. To be spoken to in that manner by this bolshy & obnoxious female, was out of order & made us feel sick, insulted & shocked. We would have understood had she politely said that they were trying to close the cafe & were no longer accepting customers. The assistant made it clear that we were in the way & our custom was not wanted so we left the site without making our planned purchases of groceries & in the gift shop. We are disappointed as we enjoyed going to Roots & shopped there regularly. I shall destroy my loyalty card and take my custom elsewhere from now on, where we won't be treated like naughty school children, our custom is appreciated & the atmosphere is pleasant. Whatever happened to the old saying, "treat others as you want to be treated yourself?". It costs nothing to smile, be helpful & pleasant, especially to those elderly or disabled.

Haven't been to Roots since our middle grandaughter was about 2 she's nearly 16 now. It was a more relaxed seating area and staff very friendly. However at that time there was a mix up about gluten free !!! When I pointed out the problem it was taken on board but being Coeliac I can't be too careful ! Today the place appeard to be trying to be something it isn't! Very little choice of anything sweet to have with a coffe - I chose a gf brownie with white chocolate - it looked fine but was very very dry and bitter - I tried to cut a small portion with a 'tool' that didn't know if it was a fork/knife/spoon- nothing like my spades at home - fork/ spoon in one. Hubby had a coffee and Flapjack but not impressed. Not a relaxing visit.!

Rarely has a small business delivered so much in such a compact space – an incredibly well stocked farm shop with standout meat counter offering the full works including game, and gourmet food and wine goods covering most of the bases. Then there are the home made delights of the adjoining cafe which has become a regular breakfast haunt for us and where we have also enjoyed a tasty lunch. The scones and cakes seem to be very popular with other customers. It is rewarding for us to be able to do shopping such as organic skimmed milk and free range eggs alongside picking up a pheasant and some venison, rare cheeses, gourmet pates and specialist pickles. Our kind of provisioning experience. Lots of choices and surprises. The country kitchen atmosphere of the cafe is perfect and the service friendly. Good range of breakfast offerings and the specials board for lunch tempts the palate with thoughtful creations. The whole business model is an example of excellence to inspire others. Major congratulations from two deeply appreciative regulars.

I met a friend for coffee here and we were delighted to see the new (to us) reading room area. This is just outside the main café and we enjoyed catching up in this lovely little space. We had only planned to meet for a quick coffee - which was really good coffee - but were tempted to stay for a light lunch. We asked if they had anything light they could recommend and were delighted with the 'sharing plate' the kitchen produced for us specially. There were 3 kinds of hummus, sourdough bread, guacamole, all beautifully presented. Thank you!

We called at Roots today at mid day; we often call on a Sunday after a walk. It was extremely busy due to it obviously being lunchtime. When it was my turn to be served I ordered two teas, one cheese scone, one fruit scone ( one each for my husband and me) and a BLT for my son who was home for my birthday. I asked for the cheese scone to be warmed and was told to wait at the counter and to take the scones myself to our seats - which were in the nook. I wasn’t given a tray but some other kind customers opened doors for me. We then proceeded to wait for our drinks and the rest of our meal. In the end, my husband ate his scone otherwise it would have been stone cold again anyway! After 20 minutes our drinks eventually arrived : however no BLT and no apology for the long wait. I asked the waitress if the BLT was coming and she said yes it was. I ate my scone, we drank our tea - no BLT. After 50 minutes from ordering, the BLT arrived! Consequently my son ate his lunch alone. It rather spoiled the occasion so I did point this out to the waitress and asked for my comments to be passed on. She politely responded that she would do this - however we received no apology from any other staff. I appreciate that at busy times the staff are under pressure but two scones, two teas and a BLT should not be a challenge for them to deliver all at the same time!!

Not nice if I’m honest. Menu was limited, service was patchy. They got our order wrong - there were two of us l bothered getting soup so it wasn’t complicated. The soup my friend got - Carrot, ginger and honey was just awful. One of the worst soups I have ever tasted if I’m honest. The honey was unnecessary and overpowering. Coffee was nice but nothing special. It used to be nice pre covid but I won’t be eating there again. Whitegates is very near and much nicer.

We were taken to our table by the lovely waitress (Hollie I think), she was wonderful. Running around all evening but nothing was too much or too big a problem. Her service really was first class, a big smile on her face and chatty all evening. Our order was taken by another young lady, again brilliant service. The service really did make our visit. We received our food and it was cooked to perfection!!! Those chips, wow!! I loved how the chef himself came out to check on food and introduce himself. Don’t get them often but was a lovely touch. As with all afternoon teas, you 'pay through the nose', and this was no exception. Fortunately, someone had given us a gift voucher, so we could relax and enjoy the treat without considering the cost.

Just called in by chance for afternoon tea and what a treat it turned out to be. Great choices, lovely staff and great surroundings.

Boring and lacklustre menu, so very disappointing. Saw ad in Dales life and decided to give it a go. Won’t be going back. Very close to farm animals so lots of flies and strong farmyard smell.

Tried their Afternoon Tea. Plenty to eat, and good quality. It was a shame that I could only select two types of sandwich filling, although I suppose the bonus was that you could actually select the fillings.

I was out and about making deliveries today and called in at Roots. I ordered a Pork and Chutney sandwich to take out. It was one of the best I have had. The staff are super friendly. I will return with my family. Thanks

Up until recently I used to enjoy visiting Roots for my breakfast . The food is always delicious and freshly prepared . However I find it strange that over a period of my last five visits , the price was different on three occasions?

We enjoy coming to your lovely cafe and shops and always feel welcome and relaxed. However the cappuccino experience is very hit and miss. Have had some good ones but some very poor ones and today was the latter. Flavour of coffee is good but I think some of the staff don't know how to get the best from the machine. Today's offering was like a milky coffee with no froth and covered in a thick layer of chocolate. At £2.75 a cup it should always be good.

My mum and I came across this friendly, charming and delicious farm shop whilst visiting Dark Star plants. As keen gardeners we will definitely be returning to both because of the great service and quality. Thank you for making our day.

I gave Roots a five star review when I first visited and several years later, after regular visits for breakfast, lunch, and afternoon tea I am pleased to be able to still give five stars . The quality of the food and service never fails and it is first stop for breakfast when visitors come to stay. Likewise the butchers are excellent, ever helpful with advice and willing to prepare cuts of meat if not on their excellent display. I have visited larger establishments in the area and more often than not come away without having bought anything or have been unable to get seated. It is always worth driving a little further for me as Roots NEVER disappoints.

Warm and friendly cafe next to farm shop. Been three times on our travels up and down A19 and always had good food. Has a vegan lunch option and soy milk and gluten free choices. Lovely scones and cakes and good sausage rolls. Worth the detour.

Quite a little gem. The butcher's shop was excellent and the meat almost irresistible. Lunch in the café was very good - the large breakfast is certainly large and very filling - plus the locally made sausage rolls are extremely tasty. Service was good and the ambiance really pleasant

We called for lunch and were quickly seated and served with a delicious Wensleydale and Tomato soup from the specials board. Even though it is June the soup was comforting on a damp north eastern day!

Cracking food, had the English breakfast but your portion sizes are for a small adult/child Such a nice classy place where you can chill and dog friendly with a doggy water station

I have been here for the last 3 weeks on business for 2 nights a week, still 3 weeks to go 😀 Lovely welcome by everyone who has been on reception on all my visits, very helpful, friendly and they go that extra mile to help. The rooms I've stayed in so far are ( 2-10 and 31) which were very clean, cosy and well presented with everything you needed, Iron, hairdryer and tea and coffee facilities. The only little issue was the shower door rollers kept coming loose, just life cycle replacement needs attention at some point. I could not fault any of the cleaning at all and that's very rare for me due to being a cleaning trainer for the NHS, hotels, schools and offices for 20 years. I meet some of the cleaning first thing on the morning and they were also very polite and always smiling. The bar area was comfortable, clean, all the staff are friendly and the food in the restaurant-bar is excellent, large portions, presented beautifully and very tasty...... 😋 I didn't have the breakfast , so i can't comment on that... Thank you so much for making me feel welcome, especially when I'm here on my own. I will miss coming here when my business in Northallerton comes to an end 😊

Latte coffee (with extra shot) allegedly large but certainly only medium, small piece of mass produced poor quality cake....£9.05 !!!!! Massively over priced. Waited to be seated and waited to give my order while the member of staff who should have been serving me filled in her paperwork and chatted with staff. My coffee when it arrived was covered in coffee grounds and was undrinkable. I took it back and the woman who served me was very polite apologised and served me quickly with another one. I must say she was the ONLY staff member who showed any customer care at all. If you want over priced drinks and cake along with a poor attitude from staff then pay them a visit. Otherwise I suggest giving them a wide berth!!

Visited as a couple 7 March. We were staying in the hotel. Ambience was good. The eating area could perhaps do with a bit of updating but it is fine. Menu is a mix of pub classics and more adventurous dishes. I had one of the latter as a starter, Lamb Tagine Roll with harissa mayo and smoked aubergine purée. Very good. The roll had chunks of lamb and the mayo had a kick. Tasted and presented very well. I had steak and ale pie for main. Appeared home made with real chips. Again very good Mrs W had the pork belly which she enjoyed too. We had a very nice bottle of NZ Sav Blanc as well. Very good value.
