Was booked in for an overnight stay for work. I can honestly say this was by far the worst run down, I say “Hotel” loosely, I’ve ever had the misfortune of staying in. The building was extremely run down, the carpets threadbare, wallpaper peeling and sorry looking furniture. The rooms were even worse. I was in a room set aside for dogs that had an adjoining door to another room. This meant I was able to hear in detail the next door’s guests private conversation to his wife and his alarm the next morning. Thankfully he wasn’t a snorer. The carpet was filthy with both dead and live woodlice and other crawling things. The room had clearly been sprayed with some sort of insecticide as the stench was stifling. Despite airing the room it still choked me. The hairdryer looked like it might be worth a few bob on antique roadshow anytime soon. When pulling back the bedsheets they had small blood stains on. The wallpaper was bubbled and peeling. Having slept the night it was probably peeling because it was damp and I was struggling to breathe the following morning, which I’m guessing is from a mixture of the black mould in the bathroom and insecticide. Despite having a 45 minute wait for my onward travel I chose to sit outside on dull September morning and wait in the fresh air then remain within the building. On a positive note, the staff were friendly and the breakfast was nice, although the “hot” water for the tea was too tepid for me to enjoy a “nice” cuppa with my breakfast. I would certainly not recommend this hotel and will be speaking with my work booking team so that other colleagues do not have to visit and stay here.

A group of us came from all over the country to help celebrate a significant birthday. We arrived at lunchtime and were met by some very helpful and polite staff members who helped us with our lunch orders and then checked us into our rooms for the night. The staff member who attended to us throughout our evening meal was very helpful and patient. Our rooms were mostly comfortable and spacious although one couple were not happy with their room. One of our group was vegan and we were all surprised at the number of options available for vegetarian and vegan customers. The breakfast menu was very varied and the food well presented. All the staff were polite, pleasant and very helpful throughout our stay.

Stayed here a few years ago and said we would never come back. However. Thought we would give it another go, BIG MISTAKE There was an awful. Scented smell throughout the reception and bed rooms Why! The bedroom was a nice size but was very poor in condition Threadbare carpet, very bad decor, paint peeling from the woodwork, sagging dirty chair to sit on. The windows and curtains were absolutely filthy. The bathroom was just appalling, toilet pan badly stained, toilet seat badly mottled, not wanting to use, Dirty scratch marks in the bath. Bed was very comfortable, sheets were crisp and pillows to our liking. Also. Lots of moths We won’t be staying again. Greene King has let this hotel down completely, shame as the staff try their hardest to make it better.

Very disappointed. This place used to be great, whats happened? I heard rumours that things had gone down hill and regrettably this is an accurate summary from my point of view and while things have clearly gone down hill, its sadly not a gentle slope but a rather steep decline! On a recent Saturday evening visit here I was really not impressed. The soup……. Very suspect was it from a can? Vegetables with main - inedible, watery and cold. Generally a grotty feel to the place overall. Wont be returning and would not recommend. Could I recommend to the management getting hold of someone like the Hotel Inspector if the tv programme is still running? Or perhaps at the very least a damp cloth and some detergent as the tables were not that clean at all and there were plenty of staff about and hardly any customers which is not surprising given the quality of food and general ambiance. In fairness a member of staff asked why the vegetables with the main were not eaten and when told why a small amount was taken off the bill. On a side note the fries were delicious……. But that does not make up for everything else. Like I say this place is not what it used to be. Avoid in my opinion until its sorted out!

A nice location in the forest, hotel is clean, but needs quite a bit of TLC. It appears that some work is underway but this should reflect in the cost of the rooms. One omission is the lack of USB plugs. Not a big cost to upgrade these! Bar prices are fair and comparable to other hotels 🏨. Finally the young lady looking after the place was great and very hard working.

Had not stayed here for a couple years but chose as it is near Sheffield Park Railway Station. Room had good natural light and was spotlessly clean and furnished better than many other hotels of a similar standard.Would have been better if the 2 single power points had been doubles. Could not fault breakfast or dinner in any way and staff were all very pleasant and helpful. From my experience on this stay I have booked a two night New Years break in December..

To be honest I expected more. It looks nice outside but was a little dingy coming in from the sunshine. My meal was just OK, nothing special and I actually thought for the price was rather a small portion. So, a bit of a let down on the food and ambience front but the staff were fairly friendly. On the plus side they were serving food at 5pm when other places were not serving til 6pm which is a real advantage to them as many people like to eat early or have to sometimes.

This place is in a time warp. You can't really complain about too much - it's just like a Beefeater from the seventies. Rather grim and oak orientated. Comfortable menu and comfortable food. Quite nice service and reasonable in price but you feel as though it's due for a makeover.

I took my daughters here for lunch, we went to the restaurant where a few people were seated. the waitress asked if she could help and we asked for a table for 3, she said we can sit in the bar area and order at the bar. I said were there not any tables in the restaurant to be answered you can sit in here if you want - not very inticing so went into the bar and therefore she missed a tip. I ate here with my family one day, first of all asked to sit in the restaurant and then the waitress sat us down in the bar, and said the restaurant was closed yet a family that was staying in the hotel went in and sat in there for dinner. The menu sounded amazing, but when the food arrived it was completely disappointing! The starters were awful, I couldn’t even get my teeth through the calamari, the main meal was absolutely awful it came out stone cold, we complained and said it was cold, and she took it away to heat it and it still came back warm to cold. The food didn’t taste nice at all, it was over cooked, it had a awful layer where you could see it had just been heated a few times, it tasted burnt awful and cheap, considering all the meals were quite highly priced.. this was all 3 meals. We had to go to the bar and order each and every drink with our meal. The staff were extremely rude and moody and didn’t smile one bit. Do not eat here it was absolutely awful service and food!

Was very grateful to find this pub which has a nice outdoor seating area and was still serving food in the middle of the day. There is an extensive menu and you order at the bar. Service was fine- polite and efficient. We ordered two mains (1/2 chicken and a chicken burger) each was around £11.95 and then 1pint and 1/2pint of shandy which all came to just over £29. Food arrived quickly and was fine - both chicken pieces though were tired and dry tasting but we were starving so gobbled it up regardless! I would return and try something else on the menu at a more common dining time to give the chef a better shot. Nice location, dated decor inside but reasonably priced. Would return :)

We booked a table for a birthday meal for 4pm yesterday for 6 adults. When we arrived there was no-one at the front desk or the bar, I had to go right in to the restaurant to find a waiter to see if someone could help, he was not impressed that I had interrupted him. There was no lime for our gin and tonics and they ran out of ice which was not a good start. The bar where we sat for our drinks was freezing, it wasn't even a cold day! We were ushered to our table that didn't look very inviting but we spotted a round table in the window so asked to be seated there. The waiter shrugged and said it was ok, i'm not sure it was though. The food was boring and tasteless. We had roast dinners from "The Carvery" - the invisible carvery... It was prepared in the kitchen and delivered to our table. Other guests had fish and chips, the batter was far too thick and well over-cooked. We took a cake for our celebrations that they were happy for us to have but although we took a plate to serve it on they brought the cake out on the cardboard base. The waiter then offered us ice cream to go with the cake - a good idea but it took 10 minutes to arrive... There was only two other tables of 4 in and the cake was half eaten by then. The whole experience was really poor, the building is tired and grubby, the waiters were ok but had an abrupt way about them and it was all a bit shoddy.I have driven past so many times and have always been so intrigued by the busy car park so wanted to see what was going on. It is safe to say we will not be going back.

I have passed this restaurant many times over the years but never popped in until now with a couple of friends. The establishment was very clean and the staff were very friendly and we were seated on time in the main restaurant although for aSaturday night it was very quiet with only one other table occupied. The menu has a variety of choices for all palettes and we quickly ordered. The food arrived quickly, pate, mushrooms, scallops and squid and wow it was all piping hot and absolutely devine. We all ate up and enjoyed every mouthful. Once our starters were cleared the mains were on the table immediately and if I had to complain it would be this as we would have preferred a slight gap between courses but next time we will ask for this. The mains were scampi, cod, the meat pie and the mixed grill, again all lovely and hot and we all enjoyed it. Two of us braved desserts after a break and they were lovely too. The staff were very attentive and our compliments to the chef. Read a few reviews of this restaurant prior to our visit and many say it needs updating. I felt it was in keeping with the exterior and everything was clean and not tired as many places are. Next for us is the Sunday carvery.

I had never visited this restaurant before and quite frankly I wish I'd steered well clear. Alarm bells rang when entering the dining room which was very quiet considering it is a hotel as well as a public restaurant. The staff were less than happy to see us and there was no enthusiasm from them at all. When the food arrived the salad leaves were tired and on the turn and the meat was cooked to the point that it was dry and unpalatable. Maybe desert could save the day? Not a chance. An "Eton Mess Cheesecake" did not resemble any part of its title and seemed to be a mish mash of sugary sludge and sponge. This place needs to sort its self out. Its terrible.

After being added on Twitter by The Roebuck and they messaged me asking if I had ever been before to which I replied no they asked if I would like to try it and they offered me a discount. It is about 50 minutes from where I live but I like to go out for lunch so I agreed. Was very surprised at their social media presence and push, not many restaurants are like that. Upon arrival the place seemed rather large and there was no one to greet us in the foyer so we just walked in to the restaurant where we were greeted with muted enthusiasm. The waitress was polite and showed us to our table. The place itself was older and a beautiful building with that smell an older place comes with which is oddly comforting. My partner had 3 courses while I had two. My partner had a prawn cocktail which was pleasant, a large fish and chips which was large and well displayed and apparently very tasty. I had a cheese and bacon for main which was nice, I asked for well cooked and it certainly was. The chips were nice and it again was well presented. We both had a chocolate flower pot for dessert as "edible soil" on the menu sounded interesting. The dessert came with a small dollop of ice cream and a tiny little flower pot with chocolate sauce and crumbled up cake which was obviously the "soil." It was really nice however there wasn't much of it for the price. The food overall was very nice and the service was ok. Considering on the messages they sent me they said they were going to give me a warm welcome and the only person we interacted with was a waitress who I don't think knew much English through no fault of her own or in any way bad thing but I was explaining to her how we had come here because of Twitter etc and I don't think she knew what I was saying, she wasn't rude at all. We sat in the restaurant and we were the only two people in there. The bar was busier with people, she did offer a choice but as we hadn't been there before we didn't know where people "preferred" to sit. I would come back again if I was in the area as it was pleasant and nice. I assume the Twitter campaign was because they had a huge restaurant area and only us in it. Which is a pity as it a lovely building with good food.

Went for Sunday lunch buffet - bad, bad, naughty "Yorkshire puddings", they had to be home-made because even Aunt Bessie's have a slight nod to being edible. These flat puddings were more cardboard with a hint of burnt. One of our party wanted a vegetarian option and was told they could have a nut roast - two layers of bland indistinguible vegetables topped with breadcrumbs is not my idea of a NUTroast. All the other parts of the buffet were OK, although very sad little wedges of Paxo stuffing. Just one of those times where you eat the food because you're paying for it but don't actually enjoy it. As mentioned I was really impressed, good menu, not loads of choice but everything you need. As we had booked late we had missed the Sunday carvery. My hubby had Calamari, which he loved & rump steak - again he thought this was very nice. I had beef & ale pie with mash, which was huge and very tasty. Pud was salted caramel torte which was lush. We had a meal here this evening because we are staying overnight in the hotel. As it is not very busy at the moment, most of the diners seemed to be eating in the bar area. I'm glad this was so because it is a very comfortable and cosy area. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We enjoyed a three course meal with wine and were very pleasantly surprised at the quality of it all. This is a lovely old building, medieval style although I don't think that it is as old as that, but it is lovely with oak beams and leaded light windows.

Thanks to the team at The Roebuck. We were made to feel very welcome- nothing was too much trouble. Varied menu and very reasonably priced. The food was delicious and service friendly and efficient- what more could you want?! Definitely going to make this a regular lunch stop

When we arrived we sat on a sticky table which wasn't cleaned, were served by miserable staff that were spoken to rudely by a manager behind the bar, who also spoke very rudely to the customers and avoided looking at customers when he was spoken to. Incorrect food order given. Dreadful food, over cooked and tasteless. No apology given about the incorrect order and the finalbill which had items on it which hadn't been ordered. We were very disappointed as the online menu looked varied with great choices. We left feeling let down and ripped off with eating here.

We've been there 3 times in the last 3 years. It's the nearest restaurant to where we spent a week in Summer. The Manager (at least I think he is the Manager - he seems to handle the hotel reception, seat the customers and serve the food) - he was there all 3 years was always slightly unfriendly. We met the same Barmaid twice (also not the friendliest person in the area). The restaurant has many many tables, both inside and out and a bar area with more tables. If i had to make a guess, i reckon it can easily sit 150 people comfortably.Anyways, a big group of us turned up for lunch a few weeks ago. The Manager doesn't tell us he doesn't want us there, instead he called us 'The Surprise Group' and told us it will be a long wait for the food; we did ring that morning but yet he seemed surprised that we turned up.He was then annoyed that quite a few of us had the £5 voucher for registering with English Inns. There were about 6 other small tables in there that were occupied, mostly couples or small families. The food didn't take that long but when our final friends arrived (a family of 4 - 2 adults of 2 toddlers), they were told that there was no more food. The toddlers were very hungry and i asked them to cook some Chips or perhaps rustle up a sandwich - I couldn't imagine that they would have run out of Everything.Well, the manager then said that the COOK (yes, the ONE COOK) was very angry because he had to cook for so many people.I wasn't sure if I was meant to laugh at that remark or suggest he hired happier stuff or perhaps lead by example. It almost seemed like they resented having more business that day and found us to be nuisance. FOOD VALUE? You can decide for yourself. It cost my teenage son and I £27 - we had fish & chips, a burger and 2 drinks.TASTE?it wasn't too bad but how hard can it be to fry some chips, fish and beef patty?DECOR?I didn't mind it - many pub style restaurants do look this way - with a slightly dated look, but it was clean and tidy.

Having ben here many times for a cheapo lunch, I really ought to comment on the good food and service offered by the staff here. The lunch menu at £5.99 for main course is excellent and for an extra pound you can upgrade to a robust lunch that will last until dinner.Comfortable surrounding, frequented by pound stretcher pensioners (like me) but at least they are well behaved.

We stopped at this lovely venue on the way back from Eastbourne, we even perused the new year eves special stay and had planned for ten of us to come. However when we ordered the food and it arrived, to say we was shocked would be an understatement!! I ordered a chefs special which included 'bubble and squeak' on a steak, different I thought but actually is was like 'smash potato' with a bit of veg in. the steak was burnt around the edges( considering i ordered medium rare! ). My wife could not eat her mach and the 'braised steak' was just like a TV dinner, probably was! the bill with a couple of drinks topped £400! so don't bother look elsewhere

We tried out the Roebuck as it was offering a fixed price set menu at £7.95 for two courses. When we checked the set menu out it was a bit limited for my taste and I preferred to order dishes from the main menu. My husband, however, happily chose a starter and main off the set menu and he enjoyed his choice. Our food was good quality and value for money, even off the main menu. I had the duck breast. I prefer duck pink to keep it moist, and expected it to come out like that, as it usually does. It came out cooked through BUT sooo succulent and moist I have to applaud the chef`s ability to time the cooking to absolute perfection for all tastes. Please note: Set menu / main menu. Although I had said at the time of ordering our food and drinks that my husbands` choice was from the set menu we found when we added it up that all our food had been billed from the main menu. Easily rectified by a return to the bar, but do make it absolutely clear you are ordering off the set menu and make sure you get a receipt which shows the food order.

Having been delayed on our return flight home from holiday we decided to pop into the Roebuck for dinner. There was a very good choice on the menu and there were one course, two course and three course meals ranging from £6 for one course. The four of us had a couple of rounds of drinks and food which came to £56. Very surprised as the food was excellent. Would thoroughly recommend.

Went to the Roebuck for food and, whilst the menu was a little limited, the food was very good and excellent value. The hotel is very nice and is, a little surprisingly, dog friendly and the rooms appear good value. Will definitely go back there for food and a possible stay.

We were looking for a place to have coffee and cake after Michelham Priory house and garden visit. We discovered this lively and quirky tea garden. It was very busy with groups of families and friends. It was organised and provided a friendly service.

Being a bit of a Sunday roast connoisseur I’d heard good things about this pubs Sunday roasts! Booked it up (recommended) and had the three meat roast! Way too much for me BUT oh my god was it delicious. The meat was melt in mouth, Roasted potatoes just right, all homemade and with the biggest Yorkshire pudding I’ve had. The gravy stole the show, it was delicious and I’d love to know how they made it taste sooooo good! 10/10 (my first ever) I’ll be back for sure!

Dreadful menu and terrible service. Menu was limited to say the least and they didn’t have what I wanted. Had breakfast there this morning and couldn’t have poached eggs only fried, reason being ‘we only have 1 chef’ ……a chef who can’t poach eggs!!!!
