We visited Rocksalt because it had been recommended to us by friends and we had read promising reviews of it in the past. We had booked for February 13th which was a Friday, I don't believe in superstitions, but maybe I should. The greeting was warm and friendly and we were shown to our table. The restaurant was about 2/3rds full. We were given a menu but were not asked if we would like a pre dinner drink. We waited, and waited, and waited. Fortunately we had the tide to come into the harbour to entertain us. Finally our order was taken. We requested aperitifs and a bottle of wine along with starters and main course. We waited and the starters turned up. We asked where our drinks were and sent the starters back because we had not had the aperitifs. We waited. After 10 minutes the aperitifs and wine arrived. The waiter unscrewed the bottle top and tried to take it away. We asked for it back as we were not going to finish a whole bottle between two people. This happened a couple of times. Having finished our aperitifs we ask for the starters. By then it was all getting stressful. The manageress arrived and apologised and said that she thought that we wanted the starters before the aperitifs! Having finished our starters, the plates were quickly cleared away. We waited and waited and waited and watched the tide fill the harbour. We finally asked where our food was and the waitress disappeared and didn't reappear for quite a while. Then she reappeared only to say that it was on the warming plate - so why wasn't it served? Eventually it did arrive followed a few minutes later by the chef to ask if everything was ok? The food was first class, but the organisation and service was awful and it was a very stressful experience. It didn't help that a female customer was getting very intoxicated and then started having a VERY loud video conversation with a member of her family She could be heard by all the remaining dinners. What made matters worse was that a member of staff joined in!. Why was she not asked to continue the conversation outside? The whole evening was totally substandard apart from the food. Someone needs to sort things out with the front of house.

The most disappointed overpriced seafood ever. Really ruined our late Valentine's dinner and we left still hungry!!! We came specifically for some fresh seafood and could not have been more disappointed (note: at the time of review, they have changed their menu from when we went.) Starters: * Ham croqueta. Small for the price. * Scallops. Too light and small as well as being underwhelming in terms of taste. Main: * Cod. OK I guess. My boyfriend had no complaints. * Dover sole for myself. The most ridiculous Dover sole ever!!! Menu stated 'Dover sole on the bone'. "OK great," I thought. I have no problem cutting my own fillets and dealing with the bone and have experience doing so and sole is my favourite fish. What actually arrived on my plate....??? Utterly bewildered. It was not the whole fish and I had to ask waiters what it even was. They provided a less than convincing explanation that the chef cuts a portion of the fish in length and that it's to do with it being winter. I'm sorry but what? For 28£ and this is what they serve?!? That means they probably get three portions out of it and make more money from it that way. Absolutely ridiculous. Especially when at other times of the year, you can find in their reviews that they serve the whole fish, which is what I had expected having looked at the reviews before coming. Even more worrisome, it did not look nor taste like sole. Do not take people for fools, as a sole would never have the thickness of what was actually on my plate. I showed the picture to many knowledgeable relatives and they were just as shocked as no one had ever seen it served that way. I did my own research as well, and could not find any evidence of it being served in a similar way. As for the taste, it was non-existent. Did not taste like sole, which has a very distinctive taste. So god knows if they even served something else. As for the sauce, it was recycled from the scallop starter I had so I literally tasted the same in both of my dishes. Very disappointing that not only the chef uses the same sauces, but that waiters did not point this out and recommended something different or that the menu did not make this clearer. (edit: seeing from more recent reviews, I can see that others have this same complaint even for the newer menu) As for sides, they were not included so obviously, over 30£ for a tiny main and side is an absolute rip off. "Creamed potatoes" was written on the menu, so I expected that. But I got mashed potatoes instead! Why not write that, then? Why do you choose fancy wording to serve basic things? Not what I was expecting, so again, poorly written on the menu, just like the "Dover sole on the bone". By the way, I saw people at nearby tables ordering the sole, and saw the face of surprise and a few comments to their partner when it arrived, so I know I am not the only one. I complained to two different waiters about my disappointment, and gave them a chance to make it right, but they did not. Towards the end, I was too annoyed that this ruined what was supposed to be a nice time for us to even order a dessert (god knows how they would have got it wrong as well anyway) and not wanting to spend more money on average food, we left still hungry and went home to eat some cheese. This place is the definition of all style no substance. Would not recommend. Poor overrall experience.

Without doubt the best restaurant in Folkestone, the food has remained a very high standard. The service is excellent along with a great atmosphere. There is something for every taste, not just seafood. Times are tough for restaurants and I understand the need to cut costs and that’s my only complaint, before bread on the table was complementary now there’s a change. For a restaurant of this quality you would expect an amuse bouche and complementary bread. Highly recommended.

This is my second visit (first in Oct 2022). Not only prices have increased 15-20% but quality/service degraded. This time service was very slow, there was a big shortage of staff and even getting the tables cleared took almost 30minutes. No one asked if all was good, we had to fight with other tables to get the attention of the staff. For our anniversary lunch this was disappointing even though we mentioned this on our reservation. Food wise, not impressed. Especially considering how expensive it is. We ordered the monkfish and cod and they had the identical sauce. I would expect some creativity from the chef for two of the only fish main courses on the menu. Monkfish had caviar but lost at the bottom of the plate and bland flavour. What we love was the bread. So tasty but butter was subpar. Overall, I will not be returning for a third time. Overpriced for what it offers.

Terrible service. Absolutely awful from start to finish, and served poached eggs that were undercooked. Firstly, we didn't get our table dressed when had to sit outside with our dog. No salt and pepper, no glasses for table water, no little pot of flowers like everyone else who was sitting inside. No water for the dog. We had to get our own salt and pepper from a table inside the restuarant because when the food was delivered the waitress didn't ask if we needed anything. When our food was ready the waitress took our food to the wrong table. We had no check-in whilst we were eating to ask if everything was alright. When we caught the waitress to get the bill I showed her the egg white on my plate that I couldn't eat because it was raw. She didn't apologise or show any concern at all. She said dismissively that she would tell the chef. She cleared the plates and came back a good few minutes later with a card reader explaining that she had added a service charge to the bill. She then tried to make small talk with us about the rest of our day. Amazed, I said that an apology would have been nice. She asked me what she should apologise for. I said about the raw eggs. She then became defiant and said 'I told you I would tell the chef' I then repeated the statement that just an apology from you would have been nice. She appeared very irritated and through gritted teeth said 'I apologise, I will tell the chef'. This was an awful experience and she made me feel very anxious and upset. It is simple curtsy and basic hospitality to apologise to the customer if something has gone wrong. I have honestly never met a more arrogant and indifferent person working as a waitress.

Exceptionally good food, oustanding service and great location. The perfect lunch destination. It's not cheap, the cod & chips to share for 2 was £58 but it was without a doubt the best fish and chips I've ever had. Crab for a starter was also pretty good as well. Every single member of staff was knowledgable, polite & friendly. We pre-booked and purchased a voucher for £150 and they then give you an extra £30 credit - Which you'll need. Bill for lunch for 4 was £260 incl a bottle of red wine. Service is added to the bill @ 12.5% BUT when they present the bill they will highlight this & check that you're OK with that. Something I have never been asked before in a restaurant. Very impressed. We'll definitely go again - Just got to save up a few pennies first!

We came for the Jason Robinson sportsman lunch in aid of MND on the 12th Feb. Our first time to Rocksalt Restaurant and it was great. On arrival we were greeted and coats taken. We were shown to our table which had wonderful views of the harbour even on a grey overcast day. They catered to us being vegan. We had heritage carrots, spiced carrot puree and vegan feta for a starter, which was lovely. Followed by a potato wellington with black garlic puree and a parsley sauce which was amazing. Lastly we had a vegan burnt caramel tart with ice cream. The food was great and service friendly and attentive. We will be back again soon!

We've been many times to the restaurant, but did not realise they also had rooms to stay. We've just tried it with a winter gourmet escape offer and we had such a lovely time! The view from Rocksalt are incredible and both our dinner and the breakfast were excellent. I had the fish and chips and it certainly did not disappoint! Scallops for starer were delicious too. We love Rocksalt and have been dining there regularly over many years. A special thank you to the charming French Manager Leon who reserved us a window table at very short notice, so we were able to dine there on Christmas day. The canapés were delicious, as was the Folkestone crab starter. The dessert and cocktails were also superb. However, as one of us is vegetarian, we would love the chef to produce a vegetarian version of the turkey with all the trimmings. Surely it must be possible? Perhaps a vegetarian Wellington or Nut Roast? The mushroom Lion steak was not a popular choice and was wasted as it was not to our taste. Please can we have a simple vegetarian option? We were also disappointed not to be offered a complimentary glass of bubbles, as is customary on Christmas Day. Despite the 'cost of living crisis' surely this is not too much to ask when paying £145 per head, plus drinks and a service charge of £50? Josh De Haan, please take note!

Tonight we were looking forward to a fantastic meal at Rocksalt. However I got the booking date wrong and turned up a week early. The maitre d was fantastic and found us a table at their Sister resturant Little Rock. The walk from Rocksalt to Little Rock was amazing. We walk along the old train line, across the harbour and into the train station. All have been regenerated to a high standard. The lighting and planting set the mood. The menu in Little Rock was not vast and dont let that phase you. For what they did have on the menu was a taste sensation. Local produce cooked and served to perfection. I had been wanting to go for awhile and it didn’t disappoint. I can’t eat wheat or dairy so it can’t be awkward in some restaurants, not here. The staff were knowledgable about allergies and intolerances and the difference between the two, they know their dishes so ordering was easy. I was surprised how much of the menus was available to me, had too much choice! i loved that they have lots of alternatives for the dish , so vegan cream to finish the soup and the stew. The scallops had a pea purée as an alternative to the original sauce, but I didn’t have to make sacrifices. If in doubt ask don’t make assumptions about what’s available to you or you might miss out. My partner had the fish soup for starter and the never ending fish pie, he loved both . I felt the price was good for the quality of food and the service

Beautiful place to eat with very high quality food. The only downside is (if you’re sitting outside close to the boat docking area) that you always get the horrible smell of the old fishing boats coming to Dock. Maybe the restaurant should close the windows when this is happening as the smell is very intense and sickly. Prices are also very high, higher than most good London restaurants, so not great value for money, but the location/setting and food quality make it a must visit

We had booked a table here a few weeks ago when we visited Folkestone for a few days, and we were really looking forward to it, as we had heard it was great! Well....we were highly disappointed, we waited over 40 minutes for our starters, 45 minutes for our main!!! Absolutely ridiculous. 1 couple actually walked out they had been waiting so long! 2ndly the samphire was not edible it was SO SO salty you just couldn't eat it, but yet the garnish of Samphire over my fish was fine. 3rdly we asked for 2 lots of mash creamed and truffled, and only received the creamed mash!!! after speaking with our server a lady (who apparently was the supervisor) which is even worse, she just casually said she didn't realise we had asked for both!!! Clearly not paying attention! She also served us a different wine than the one we ordered!!! yet another mistake!! and my friend who had ordered fish too, was not given the sauce to go with it, it was only when she realised minutes after and after speaking with the waitress we were given the sauce that complemented the fish! Clearly unacceptable, and not attentive or overly friendly at all!! considering it's meant to be a fine dining restaurant and is meant to be of a high standard, it clearly does not live up to that in reality!! Also I found the fish I had Dover sole overpriced and small considering! Highly highly disappointed and won't be returning back!! The ONLY plus point was a beautiful view and setting looking over the harbour.

The location and the ambiance was great but the overall experience was mediocre and not worth the price and we were let down by the service which seems to be a common theme reading through the reviews. We ordered the tomahawk steak and we were told upfront about a 45 mins wait which we were fine with. It arrived over 1 h later and cold and the sides were missing so we had to wait another 7 mins for the cabbage to be served. This is really poor especially when you charge £95 for this experience, and wait 1h for it, then you expect this to be perfection and not 3/5 at best. Given we wanted It medium rare there was no option to send It back to be reheated either! And it's a shame as it tasted really good. It was clear the steak was just sitting and waiting to be served in a restaurant that was operating at 50% capacity. The service really was not attentive and it was then obvious that our waiter just could not wait to get rid of us because his mannerism changed halfway through when we were still there 2 h later (as if the delay was our fault) enjoying a second bottle of wine instead of fancy desserts and we were basically rushed out. When the bill was served, he stood over us so that it is paid immediately which I found strange in a fancy restaurant. If Rocksalt wants to market itself as luxury restaurant, then you should really make major improvements to service and offering because at moment you are coasting on past glory. Looking at other reviews, you are likely to lose customers as the issues are repeating itself so it's surprising they are not dealt with effectively. We have just purchased a property in Folkestone but unlikely we will be returning even despite the amazing sunset and view from the table.

£38 for 2 mini steaks alone with no flavour. Also £27 for 2 little scraps of lamb and a blob of kale. Food came out cold. Portions are an absolute joke for the price you pay. You could go elsewhere and have 2/3 nicer quality meals for the price we paid for a meal that we left hungry and disappointed afterwards.

First off the service was great the staff were very pleasant and in no way am I blaming them… but £26.50 for two strips of lamb that was cold is ridiculous! As well as £38 for “steak” that was bland, tiny and unseasoned, funny for a restaurant with the name Rocksalt, the restaurant it self was nice but for the price you are paying the food quality is appalling, I understand that some portions are small but at least make them taste good. Such a shame. In fairness they did give me 2 vouchers with £20 off for when I return, but I don’t think I’ll be needing them….

Rocksalt Restaurant offers a solid culinary experience that unfortunately falls short due to inconsistent service. The food is undoubtedly excellent, showcasing a delightful range of flavours and impeccable presentation. Each dish is a testament to the chef’s skill and creativity, making it clear that the kitchen operates at a high standard. However, the service at Rocksalt needs improvement. During our visit, we asked for bread three times, but it never arrived. Additionally, we were repeatedly asked if we wanted a drink by different staff members, indicating a lack of coordination and a coherent service plan. Despite the outstanding food, the disorganised service means Rocksalt just missed the mark. Addressing these service issues could elevate the restaurant to match its culinary excellence.

Exceptional food and service. We had the king prawns, cod fillet and mussels. One of the best sea food experiences in the UK. Must visit in Folkestone ❤❤❤ Congratulations to the chefs and the people in service 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 AMAZING. Will visit again for sure.

Had a meal here today with my grand daughter and must say I feel extremely let down and annoyed. We ordered the sirloin steak roast, supposedly aged 28 days. The meat that arrived was strip loin, and certainly not aged that long.I am a butcher and know every type and cut of meat.I had no problem with the service and the rest of the meal ,excellent, but they really should not be deceiving the public by falsely claiming the product is 28day aged sirloin when it clearly was not. I did share my observations with my waiter. I shan't be returning.

View was great of course as expected. Food and local wines were excellent as well which is 5 stars worthy. The highlight was Pippa who was very warm and genuine towards us even though we arrived 10 mins before the kitchen closes - and she was super friendly with us throughout.

I’ve read some of the critical reviews for this restaurant and cannot agree with any of them. The location, the menu and the food were amazing. We had the scallops for starters and the seafood platter with lobster for mains, and the pea risotto. The sauces for the scallops and seafood platter were totally gorgeous. The sourdough bread was to die for. The thing that stood out the most were the staff - they were extremely knowledgeable, attentive without being intrusive, and friendly. Would definitely go back.

Beautiful location, nice drinks and good music. However, the overall experience was let down by the bar tender with a beard who was incredibly arrogant and cocky working at the inside bar. He was incredibly patronising when we ask any simple questions about drinks. When the outside bar didn’t have what we asked for, they asked us to go to the inside bar and we were greeted with rudeness, as if it was our fault. Speaking to other people enjoying the day, they had also mentioned how unpleasant their experience was as well with him specifically. It’s a shame the experience was overshadowed by the rudeness of one man.

We were the second party in the door, we had called ahead to request a window seat and explained we had a pram as this was a special occasion and had booked over a month in advance. When I had spoken to someone in the week they said they would try their best which i completely understand nothing is guaranteed, however on the day we were told that the table we were allocated with a view of the sea we wouldn’t be allowed to sit at because of the pram. They then changed our table to one right in the corner near a fire exit. To add insult to injury another party with a pram and baby sat at a window seat with no issues. We have also previously taken our newborn with us and been allowed to sit at the type of table we were initially allocated with the same pushchair so I am perplexed as to what the issue was this time. It really put a dampener on the start of our evening especially as this was done when the entire restaurant was empty. The food was nice but nothing special and something we could have had at home; and because we were tucked away in Timbuktu we had to wait quite a while to get someone’s attention when we needed something. It’s a shame because the last time we went to rocksalt the food was good and the service was prompt which is why I chose it for such a special occasion, I think the table fiasco really let the evening down. It’s a shame because we are reconsidering whether we eat there again.

Love Rocksalt, it remains my favourite restaurant and the quality is just as good as it always has been. However, the bar upstairs is now a real disappointment. It used to be a great place for pre meal drinks but on last 3 occasions service has been so slow, twice over a 20 minute wait, why can't we order at he bar! Furthermore the tables are not cleaned and dirty. Given the high standards of the restaurant, why is the bar so poor by comparison? Anyway, no more chances, will use the bar in future.

What a shame to travel all the way to Rock Salt to celebrate our 20th year anniversary on the recommendation of a friend only to get there and no food was being served at all! Gordon Ramsay would have been extremely disappointed as all staff were not warm and inviting - in fact it was only one lead bar / mixologist who created a vibe and was engaging with all customers ( male with beard) one female bar / mixologist was extremely helpful in assisting me with the brandy selection….. We will not be returning 😢or recommending this place

Very average food and over priced. but the desserts absolutely disgusting for the price one of the smallest blobs of ice cream I have been served. Lovely location shame about the wine bar music it was like being back clubbing in Ibiza. Not really want you looking for in a nice restaurant. Would give this a miss as there is a lot better out there.

For a fine dining restaurant I expected them to cut their own chips was to my dismay I saw them getting frozen chip out of bag as we Enetered the restaurant and yet £5 for a portion. Nice food but create the food you’re making people pay for.

best thing is it's in a great location. Its a bit of a Jekyll and Hyde place. Went here for an early evening drink and it was a nice quiet experience. The next time we went it was full of under 25s, with a DJ blasting out Techno music. Bit odd? Its not quiet sure what it wants to be and what customer it wants to attract.

Lovely restaurant with a perfect location. The service was attentive despite being very busy. Just one little gripe, we were visiting Folkestone and my friend booked a table at 8.30pm mentioning about a set menu offer. Upon arrival, we were only handed the a la carte menus. Since I did not make the booking, I just assumed that perhaps the offer wasn't on anymore. However upon checking the website afterwards, it is very much still available. I feel it was a bit cheeky of them to not bring all the menus as it would have been significantly cheaper since we pretty much ordered the same food. Also their online menus prices don't match up with their restaurant menus.

Service was very badly organised with wine arriving after starter and we asked 3 times to order food. We couldn’t work out who was serving our table. Starter was good, main was okay and dessert was dry with too little custard. I left it.

The rooms were very small, but comfortable. However, there was little privacy unless you kept the blinds down. When you did, the lighting in the room was not good. Shower room was very good. It was the restaurant that was very disappointing. The steaks were grisly and not cooked as ordered. One of our party ordered a ‘skate wing’ - what was served up was half a skate wing. The food was way too expensive for what it was. I think they are resting in their laurels of the past. I could not recommend this place at all to eat and at best it gets 2 stars and that is being generous.
