We spent a week at the Compleat Angler Hotel. Downstairs is a pretty restaurant with views of the historic Marlow Bridge and literally on the Thames. The service was amazing, everyone was so helpful and kind. My husband and I would like to especially recognize Hulya. She made our week extra special. Her positive attitude, beautiful smile and suggestions made our meal times extra special. She is such a wonderful asset to the establishment. Amazing customer service. Having suffered nausea, uncontrollable shaking and violent vomiting after having afternoon tea at the Riverside restaurant my complaints have been ignored despite several emails and phone calls. Apparently an independent company were supposed to look into the incident but I have heard nothing. I have given the restaurant several opportunities to apologise, to refund the cost of the meal and ensure this never happens to anyone with allergies again. They have failed in every respect. Do not eat here if you have any allergy or intolerances.

Very disappointing breakfast experience. Based on our visit, I would not recommend for dinner. Shown to table but not provided a menu. After a few minutes I had to go to the front desk to request menus. Waited at least another 5 minutes before staff came over to take our breakfast order. Coffee (cafetierre) was extremely weak (waitress whispered to us that it was cheap coffee). Cooked breakfast was terrible. Bacon dry and over-cooked. Sausages burnt. Grilled tomatoes burnt. Beans lacked flavour. Potato "scone" tasteless. All served on a plate that was barely warm so food was soon cold, though most was not eaten. Other guests were also complaining about the over-cooked food. Not a great advertisement for a restaurant that is supposedly high quality. Will not be returning.

The starters were really nice and well presented particularly the cullen skink. Most of the main courses were great particularly the Aubergine and Sherherd’s pie. The fish and chips weren’t great the batter being soggy and the chips being tasteless frozen chips Overall however a pleasant experience with a good range on the wine list

For our 59th wedding anniversary, we went for lunch at the Compleat Angler, Marlow on 30 October. We were served by a delightful lady and shared news of her family and life in Marlow generally. We chose the Compleat Angler as it was somewhere we used to go over 60 years ago when we were courting! Oh but how times have changed! When we returned home yesterday from our anniversary holiday, there was a PARKING TICKET for parking in the hotel car park for just over an hour! With a fine of £100 if we didn't pay up! We did not see any notices and there was no-one on Reception - to either greet us or tell us about the terrible and expensive crime we had committed. It's gone 11am and the Manager Sarah Murray has yet to arrive. The UKPC organisation has no way of disputing other than by letter or email. What a terrible outcome to a once-happy memory of the Compleat Angler at Marlow ... so very sad indeed (and also a bit cross!).

Chose this well-regarded restaurant for a Sunday pre-birthday lunch, and it was a crushing disappointment. Dry roast chicken, undercooked vegetables, tasteless and a very poor selection,. £22 may not sound unreasonable for a roast chicken lunch, but if it tastes like a TV drummer from a foil tray, it’s not good. The monkfish was tasteless, the selection was poor, and it took 20 minutes to bring the bill. Very disappointing!

A-V-O-I-D / In the spring of 1979, I had my engagement party at this restaurant/hotel. It was a great venue, then. Over the years I used this place many times. Occasionally the service was not excellent, but certainly not as lousy as today. We turned up at 14:15 (Sunday afternoon). I asked for a table for 4 people. “Have you booked”, the manager asked!? “Sorry, I didn’t, but the place is empty”, I replied. To which the manager said “you don’t know if it will fill up later on”!?!? [See pictures]. It sounds like he didn’t know himself but he certainly didn’t want to work. We sat in the garden at the front of the hotel and bought a few drinks. We paid, at the bar, £32 for one gin+tonic, 2 tonic waters and one bottle of local beer. We asked for the menu – we never got one. Our table was also not cleared from the previous customers [see photo of wine bottle and coffee cup]. We were totally ignored by the staff and even those at the bar were very unfriendly. One hour later I took more pictures (place still empty) and we left to go and eat at the St George & Dragon in Wargrave, where we received an excellent service.

Let's start with what this restaurant is not, a high street set menu place. We arrived when the chef hadn't decided what will be on the menu and was giving his ideas. That culminated in a 3 by 3, 3 course meal selection that was beautifully cooked and presented. If you are looking for a chef plying a craft and respect that in order to do that the choice must be based on available ingredients and a reasonably small choice then you will love this restaurant and its setting. Despite the very limited menú the food was still very poor. £12 for a tomato starter is a bit steep but when the tomatoes are over ripe and tasteless it is not good value. That was followed by a poor quality sole which was mostly bones served with undercooked ‘butter potatoes’ and totally bland mixed vegetables. The desert was no better with what looked and tasted like a mass catering chocolate torte. At £170 for two this was a very overpriced and very disappointing meal. We won’t be going back !

£170 for two is ok when the food is good - but this wasn’t. The soggy tasteless tomato starter (served too cold) was not a good start. You expect fish to have some bones but the sole main course was more bones than fish and didn’t taste very fresh. This was served with undercooked potatoes and a very small side bowl of boring tasteless vegetables. Desert wasn’t much better as the chocolate tort looked and tasted like it came out of a packet. Given that the menu has been paired back to a very limited number of choices (4 for each course) they really ought to be able to do better than this !!! Very disappointing after recently having a superb meal in the hotel’s other restaurant Sindhu We won’t be going back to the Riverside restaurant

My husband booked this through Travelzoo and we had a Voucher for a three course lunch and glass of Prosecco. We decided to order a glass of red wine each (choice was rattled off by the waitress, as no wine list available on the table) to accompany our lamb main and coffee at the end of our meal. The food was enjoyable and we were having a pleasant afternoon celebrating our wedding anniversary... until we asked for the bill - £54 for 2 glasses of wine & 2 coffees !!!!! Shocked was an understatement! Whilst we expected the cost of the drinks to be higher than average .... £54 was ridiculous! We did complain and the wine was eventually taken off the bill, but sadly for us it spoilt what had been an enjoyable afternoon, which could have been avoided if a wine menu was available on the table.

For supper we had tepid, chewy, tasteless lamb with a mean portion of 'jus' (it was a very thin, standard gravy, not anything like a jus); dry tasteless fondant potato, with a mean portion of undercooked greens. This was followed by a tasteless, grim-textured pudding - it was as much as I could do not to spit it out. For breakfast we were offered thin, cheap yoghurt, with a teaspoon of what was allegedly a berry compote; cold pastries, burned floppy toast (we wondered if it had been pre-burned/toasted and then microwaved, that's how bad it was), orange juice from a carton and cheap, bitter coffee. Wild horses wouldn't get me back here for a meal on the house. Yuk.

We had afternoon tea and 2 dinners in the restaurant. For afternoon tea we had requested no cucumber sandwiches in advance, and again in the restaurant, but they still arrived. As a previous reviewer said, the scones did not deserve the name, and when I pointed this out, the reply came back from the kitchen that they were "Scottish scones", but my mate google could not find anything matching their description under this name. They did not taste bad, but just did not live up to their name. The waiter, also mentioned by others, was delightful, and gave a short piano recital. He did seem unable to change the preassigned table allocation, which meant that the 3 occupied tables were next to each other, which is really unhelpful in the times of Covid-19, especially when there was plenty of space in the restaurant. Some aspects of our evening meals were good, especially some cured trout, but my wife's tortellini were too large, with thick pasta, and not properly shaped. Sadly we came away feeling disappointed with our experience. We weren't asked what sort of tea we would like and instead just bought out a teapot of English breakfast tea. Never had this happen with afternoon tea elsewhere as you usually have a number of varieties to pick from. Sandwiches had been sat out a long time as the bread was dry and crusty and fillings pretty unimaginative. Scones and cakes were nice but we wouldn't return. One of my slabs of tofu hadn’t been drained properly so it made one half of my plates very wet. It was all very unappetising. In addition, the waiting staff multiple times gave members of my group the wrong food. At a restaurant at this end of the market, that really shouldn’t happen once let alone several times. It’s all a real shame because this restaurant could be amazing given its location and ambience but it really is let down by the food, which whilst being perfectly edible, is nothing to write hone about.

We travelled to this restaurant for an afternoon tea, from London. Having had no reservation, there were no tables by the window, so the manager lead us to the breakfast room where we had the privilege of having the entire room to ourselves with beautiful river view. We had a great service and hot, lovey scones. Afterwards we strolled around the town with the comfort of having our car parked at the hotel. I highly recommend this restaurant. Marlow is beautiful town for a day trip.

Fabulous afternoon tea at the gorgeous Riverside Restaurant. Had a very romantic view sat on a window table looking at the River Thames, really attentive service, scones were warm and fresh and VERY tasty; some of the best I’ve eaten. Can’t fault it, highly recommend.

We were lucky enough to have the charming and talented Ovo as our waiter which lifted a mediocre tea ( uninspired sandwiches, no savoury pastries, lovely scones, stodgy cakes rather than patisserie, lots of super freshly brewed tea) The setting at the riverside restaurant is lovely with views of the river, bridge and church. Ovo was a perfect waiter totally charming and attentive. In addition he played beautifully on the piano- quite unexpected and delightful. Overall a very good experience- we will be back.

This was a second visit where Ovo has looked after us for afternoon tea. As with our first visit at Christmas he was the best host we could have asked for.The food was amazing and we were looked after very well; however I do have to make reference to the so called supervisor Ratena, I say so called because she was busy doing nothing. We had to wait a short time for our table, as we were early and whilst we waited we watched her bring some food out and just leave it on the bar! it was clear to me who this food belonged to, but it wasn't taken to them for several minutes until Ovo realised it was sat there waiting and going cold! the lady returned her sandwich, then a lady also came and asked for the bill, Ratena replied I will get it for you, she then walked off in the other direction, a few minutes later the lady returned to ask for her bill again and was given it straight away by the barman. At the end of our tea, we asked Ratena for our bill again she said I will get it and walked off in the other direction, several minutes later I had to ask Ovo for our bill and it arrived straight away! This so called supervisor needs to be told she doesn't just wander around looking busy she has to do some work!! She is a lazy, unhelpful and not fit for purpose

Ovo was a most gracious host and even played the piano beautifully in between serving the guests. Food was excellent and the setting by the river Thames is unbeatable in Marlow. Lamb Duo was a good choice and the Italian wine by the glass was pricy but worth the money.

We stayed at the hotel and had a 3 course meal in the Riverside. Views are fabulous and so was the food, rib-eye steak for my wife and beef brisket for me with both meals cooked to perfection.

We enjoyed a 5* afternoon tea celebrating my mums birthday. The view and setting couldn’t have been move perfect, overlooking the river and church, it really has the best views in Marlow. All of the food was beautiful, we enjoyed the explanations about the different teas, and the scones were the delicious! They even brought out a special birthday plate for my mum! We were thoroughly looked after.

I am so frustrated about the food and the service in the Compleat Angler. Such an amazing setting but the food took hours to be served and was from a tray of a supermarket.

Late night, my partner and I visited the bar. No greeting or any sort of acknowledgement from the bar tender at all for 10 minutes. It was only us at the bar too. It was appalling. Only ordered a hot chocolate which was terribly bitter. Then the audacity to add service charge when all we heard was him complain to another member of staff how the place should be run. It is such a beautiful place but sadly the staff let it down.

Thoroughly enjoyable Afternoon tea here last week at the Riverside Restaurant looking out across the Thames and to Marlow Bridge. Nice touch using a timer bought to the table to ensure the tea is just right and ready to pour from the teapot! Also impressed with the sandwiches and the cake selection. Attentive and friendly service by the waitress. Thankyou!

Excelente atendimento. O local é lindo, antigo e confortável. A comida apenas boa, a apresentação excelente mas o sabor apenas bom. Não gastaria tanto para saborear um prato apenas bom.

The location of this restaurant by the river and weir is amazing. We had an outstanding three course meal and drink in the bar beforehand to celebrate a birthday. The service from Hugo and Hovo was excellent, both attentive and cheerful. Hovo even played happy birthday on the piano and the chef made my daughter a vegan birthday plate. All helping to make this a memorable evening. I would highly recommend both the food and service at this restaurant.

On arrival we were greeted by lovely staff who were extremely warm and welcoming, especially Chris the concierge and Dalia on reception. We had a great meal in the riverside restaurant, the duck was amazing, as well as Emily and Hugo who were so attentive and accommodating. The room had a stunning view of the weir, was very spacious and clean. Overall the stay was 5*. Would definitely come again and recommend to friends and family.

We came here for my nan's 90th surprise birthday meal and all I can say is from the first time of talking to the events team to leaving at the end of the night the experience was fantastic, the doorman met us with a warm smile, the bar and restaurant staff were very polite and couldn't do enough to help us make the meal go smoothly and the meal itself was worth more than we had to pay for it.. All in all a 100% evening.

The location of this restaurant is stunning. On the Thames on a lovely sunny day, it would be difficult to find a better setting. However, that's where the 'wow factor' ended. We had afternoon tea for two, we were seated quickly and asked which tea we would like. We were served tea promptly but had to wait a long time for our sandwiches and cakes. When they did arrive, there was absolutely nothing wrong with them but it was all a bit ordinary. There was nothing that stood out. The sandwiches were nice, ham, tuna, salmon etc, the scones were nice, the cakes were nice but there was nothing memorable. I've had a few afternoon teas and there is usually something that makes each one different to the next but not here. Such a shame as it could be so much better.
