No dairy-free ice cream options available at the ice cream kiosk in The Valley Gardens. With allergies being so common these days, it’s surprising and disappointing that a place like this doesn’t offer alternatives.

Apparently Ripleys famous ice cream is well known (though I had not heard of it). We called into the village, car park on outskirts of village, but quick walk. £1.2 0 for 2 hour parking. Had a walk around, and went to the ice cream palour and had fantasic ice cream, lovely as it was 80 degrees outside that day. There is a castle and other shops but we did not see those

After spending some time in the gorgeous Valley Gardens in Harrogate, it was time for lunch. And there it was - no need to go slouching round the streets looking for somewhere to eat. Sitting at one of their outdoor tables you're surrounded by trees, grass, flowers. When the weather's perfect, so is Ripleys. Good food at good value, too, served straight to your table. The right place at the right time.

It is picturesque with heavy hanging baskets. There are a few tables inside and some beneath the canopy adjacent to the building. It was good to find it open on a Sunday.

Ripley village is a nice place to be on a sunny afternoon and there is no better way to enjoy it than sitting on the village green with a Ripley Ice Cream. A variety of flavours and different types of cone and tubs make it an ice cream heaven - almost. Our preference is for genuine dairy ice crean, but this is the reconstituted powdered variety such as is available in ice cream vans throughout the country. However, if this is the type of ice cream you like, it is much better quality than that served by most ice cream vans. And on a hot summer day, it is almost perfect.

The cafe was quite busy and a little cramped, but we managed to find a table and order our requirements at the counter. There was quite a wide range on offer at reasonable prices. Most people kept their coats on but we had a newborn with us and the room was well below acceptable temperatures for even shop workers. Yes the main clientele was dog walkers but even they need a warm up. Had it been warmer we would have bought more to eat and drink but left early for home. Bet it is splendid in the summer.

Not only is the ice cream vastly overpriced, it isn't even made on the site - it is bought in!! Bland and tasteless. I fully agreed and supported the woman who asked for her money back after experiencing the tasteless overpriced rubbish. Ripley is indeed a beautiful village and we shall continue to visit - but no ice cream! Also the name 'World Famous' are meaningless words added by the most recent owners of the business. Stopped the car to investigate. Joined the queue and saw all manner of mankind emerging from the little shop with pure white ice cream, some dipped in chocolate or covered in multi-coloured sprinkles. When our turn came, we kept it simple: vanilla cones. Joined the other lickers outside in the evening sun. Tasty ice cream, way above average. A lovely spontaneous stop on a pretty evening drive.

We enjoyed Xmas luches here and have great memories playing crazy / mini golf. Visited today hoping to enyoy cake and a latte, but noticed new owners have taken over. Sadly not a patch on previous set up and sorry to say the wonerful home made baking was replaced with uninspiring offerings. Latte was the worsed i have had in many years, can only be described it as white coffee, the owner was unimpressed and rude with me asking for a replacement. Will not be returning.

Gluten free review for the cafe: I visited the Druid’s Temple today and went to the cafe for lunch afterwards. Gluten free cakes and sandwiches were available. I had an ultimate hot chocolate and a trout and cream cheese sandwich (GF bread), and I’m sad to say that neither were very flavourful. The hot chocolate was weak and watery, and the sandwich was very dry. It’s a shame because the setting is so beautiful! A word to cross contamination, I have reacted to the food that I had, so I suspect that the chopping board used for my sandwich may not have been cleaned down before preparing my food (or similar). There was also a gluten free chocolate brownie which was in the same cabinet next to gluten containing cakes, with tongs that customers could use to select their own cakes, but no separate gluten free pair. If anyone from the cafe happens to read this, from coeliacs and gluten free people everywhere please could you make sure that cross contamination risk is limited through simple measures such as cleaning down a surface before making gluten free food (we don’t mind waiting a bit longer for piece of mind!), and that GF cakes and sweet treats are kept separate and using separate tongs etc? When we find places that don’t gluten us we share it heavily in the community!

I do not usually write reviews but I feel as though I have to after what I witnessed last night 28/11. After waiting 20-25 minutes for my food, I saw the fryer shouting at the gentleman on the Till area. I asked the young man if he was okay and I could tell he was getting upset. The chef was repeatedly shouting at him and telling him to go home and storming off and swearing at him whilst the gentleman did not respond and seemed to get upset. The worst part was that it was quite busy and the man on the till was obviously trying his hardest whilst the other gentleman working was seemingly walking around aimlessly, not helping, and doing nothing. I am disgusted by this, surely in this day and age abuse towards young staff should not be happening? After reading other reviews, I have seen that this is not the first time this has happened with the same Chef. Surely management has picked up on this? I was going to give the chef a piece of my mind but was concerned that it would only result in him shouting at the young gentleman further. I will not be returning when this man is working And I am advising friend and family to do the same.

Stayed here on our way home to the West Country we stay almost every year. And this year was just as good as previous years. This year we stayed in house opposite the room I believe was called Braxton? It had a shower over the bath and a nice sized bathroom. The bed was huge and very comfortable, there ware extra pillows/blankets etc in a wardrobe if needed. There was kettle and cafetière with coffee bags. The breakfast the next morning was all cooked to order and great poached eggs. I would highly recommend this hotel and will be staying there again next year. :-)))))

Having visited the Tontine several times in the recent past, we looked forward to a nice Sunday lunch as a family. The visit was marred by underwhelming customer service, requests for water took several attempts before being served, the staff seemed uncommitted to delivering much of a service, and the food , frankly was at best average.I’m afraid that in view of the negative impression we had, it will be some time before we return, there are so many good local places to eat, it really is a disappointment to have to be so negative, must try harder would be my advice.
