We were staying locally and ordered takeaway fish and chips for our diner. The members of staff who served us were super friendly and helpful and the food was ready on time. However, the cod was overcooked and rubbery, the chips were slightly undercooked and soggy. My wife enjoyed the Thai Green Aubergine curry and the curry side sauce for the chips was also tasty. I wouldn’t hurry back which is a shame after we had a fantastic experience at Rick Steins restaurant in Padstow previously. Judging by other reviews, people have had a similar experience with overcooked fish which is something I’ve not experienced from other restaurants and chip shops in Newquay and Cornwall.

Average food, Nasi Goreng dish changed from last year, chicken could be smaller chunks and more prawns. Also preferred the previous dish serve in the larger bowl as less messy to eat from

A masive thankyou to the Rick Stein Team. The service was outstanding, thankyou for being so accommodating, re-opening the outdoor seating area which enabled our autistic daughter to enjoy your fabulous food. Would recommend Halloumi Burger with cheesy chips. 🙂

Awful shocking service. Turned up at 7:50 to an open restaurant and was told that the restaurant was closed and the grills had been turned off. Will not be going back to eat here and would advise all customers to call and book in advance to avoid the disappointment of being turned away after walking all the way down to fistral beach to eat there specifically.

Really not that great, food is on par with that you’d get in any other fish and chips across the country but at nearly double the price and with a 30minute wait for food! We grabbed a takeaway, and there were people leaving the restaurant after giving up waiting for food. Paying well over the price for the name.. it’s a tourist trap.

The eggplant curry was served in a soup-sized bowl (yes, including rice) and was completely flavorless. The fish and chips version of COD was also rather bland. The fries served with it were more like mashed potato wedges. All in all, a disappointment and not worth the money.

Fabulous meal at Rick Stein, Fistral on a Monday night. It’s a relaxed atmosphere where you don’t need to do book. The portion sizes were generous and I felt the menu was well priced. The food was delicious - I had fish and chips followed by the salted caramel cheesecake and my partner had Nasi Goreng followed two scoops of the rhubarb and clotted cream ice cream (yum!). The service was great and we were well looked after by our lovely waitress and waiter. Thank you for making our visit feel special!

Even though we waited several minutes before being seated with low volume inside the restaurant, the service was good and the food was quite delicious. We had the fish & chips to share and there was more than plenty for us to eat. Fish was lightly battered and crispy, perfectly fried with three sauce options. The beer was refreshingly cold from the tap, a big plus for me, and everything was presented well. I would eat here again.

We were really looking forward to visiting here. The location is beautiful with gorgeous views of the beach especially at sunset. Staff were happy, friendly and accommodating. There was also a live singer which was good but a little loud when you are eating. Unfortunately, the food was really disappointing. The chips were pale and oily with no taste really. The fish was also bland and tasteless...we were so surprised..we expecting tasty fish as by the sea but it really did not taste of anything..mushy peas and the goan curry sauce were nice...the tartare did not taste like tartare... unfortunately didn't match the hype and we left a little disappointed as was a pricy fish supper. The lovely staff member did give us some cheesecakes to take away with us as she understood we were disappointed. A standard restaurant with a well-known name...

He opted for the veg curry we were told no veg curry as they didn’t have the ingredients 🙄 he had no choice but to have the halloumi burger. It arrived chips were hard the bun was a totally plain boring bun with one lettuce leaf and one slice of tomato in it could have had better in mcds 🤣 I opted for the Nasi Goreng which was very nice n tasty but come with a popadom floating in grease 😬. Not the best of evenings and defo won’t rush to one of his restaurants again. Rick Stein sort it out !!! I wanted to complain my husband wouldn’t let me x I’m sorry I didn’t take more pics now

We used to live in Newquay and were regular visitors to Rick Steins on Fistral Beach. This was a disappointing visit for us. The restaurant was quite busy but not hectic. We were welcomed as soon as we entered and were shown to the only available table with high stools. It then took some time for someone to approach our table and take our order, we then had a wait of 30 minutes for the food to be delivered. The fish was lovely with light, crisp batter but the chips were very ordinary and there were lots of them! Our bill came to nearly £40, this included a 7.5% discretionary service charge and £1 donation to the Wave Project. We didn’t mind the £1 donation to the local surfing charity but felt a bit miffed about the service charge because we felt the service was poor. I think the establishment was understaffed, the staff were pleasant and friendly but the wait was too long. They also do a takeaway service, we suspected the takeaway customers were served more quickly than those sitting down. In conclusion, the food is overpriced and slow service spoilt our visit. It’s not the place it used to be.

I was looking forward to a nice fish and chips but what I got was a substandard meal. The chips were absolutely terrible. Cold hard and dry. The fish was lukewarm too. If you’re a restaurant use plates not battered tin trays. The visit actually spoilt our Easter Monday evening stroll along the beach. A wasted £70. I didn’t even know who Rick Stein was so I didn’t go there for the name. This restaurant won’t last long on a borrowed name without quality food. Change your chips for one and please serve hot food. The burger my son had was ok but he still had a ton of terrible chips… only good thing was view and the friendly staff.

Disappointing Customer Service Experience Despite Lovely Food We visited Rockfish Fistral recently and, while the food itself was lovely, the overall experience was let down by poor customer service. On arrival, we were asked if we’d like to sit indoors or outdoors. We chose outdoor seating, but be aware it’s very limited. Once you place your order, you’re not allowed to sit inside—so if no seats are available outside, you’re left waiting around, which isn’t ideal. My partner asked to use the toilet and was initially directed to the public toilets nearby. He explained that he was a paying customer, at which point they redirected him to the restaurant’s own facilities. After our meal, we decided to get some ice cream. We waited patiently at the indoor ice cream bar where a staff member was already present. Unfortunately, we were completely ignored. Several other staff walked by and saw us waiting, yet made no effort to acknowledge or serve us. After standing there for a while feeling awkward and unwelcome, we gave up and left. Overall, the lack of basic courtesy and attentiveness from staff made what could’ve been a lovely experience quite disappointing. A little warmth and customer care would go a long way in improving the atmosphere and experience here.

Absolutely dreadful experience at Rick Stein Fistral – save your money and your appetite! We were lured in by the name, but wow, what a mistake. The chips were dry as cardboard, the portions were laughably small, and the so-called “big fish” sharer? Maybe enough for two kids on a diet. For £25, you’d expect something half-decent, but this was a total rip-off. Bland, overpriced, and completely underwhelming. It’s painfully obvious this place survives on Rick’s name and the beach view, not the quality of food. Honestly, you’re far better off heading into town to Francine’s or Flounders – proper fish and chips, generous portions, and actual flavour. Steer clear of this tourist trap – it’s a stinker.

Absolutely shocking. Firstly, I’m not a fan of long-winded reviews, but I do hope people will bother to read through and be warned (!). This detailed account is really for the restaurant team and Mr Stein himself—though I doubt he’ll be reading the Google reviews, as there are so many poor ones. If he had read them, surely improvements would have been made. Visiting Newquay for work and staying at the Headland Hotel, I looked for somewhere nearby for lunch and found Rick Stein, Fistral—just a couple of minutes’ walk away. Recognising the name, I expected a treat. How wrong I was. I received a warm welcome and was shown to a large table with a lovely view over Fistral Beach. The wooden bench seating, though, was very uncomfortable. The menu was small and manageable, but uninspiring—fish and chips, burgers, two ‘Asian’ dishes, three curries, and a somewhat odd list of sides: the usuals—mushy peas, onion rings, bread, etc.—but also including a ‘chip butty’ (who eats that as a side?), and oddly, 'salt and pepper prawns' and 'battered scallops’, which seem more like starters than sides. I ordered the battered scallops (£10.95) and the grilled cod with spinach and watercress salad (£17.95), plus a side of tartare sauce—which, surprisingly, cost an extra £2. I’ve never had to pay separately for tartare sauce when ordering fish, in Cornwall or anywhere else. I also ordered a diet coke and a mineral water. I asked to have the scallops as a starter, followed by the cod, and was told by the waitress: “We’re not able to do that as they’re a side order.” Not exactly the most flexible approach, especially since there weren’t any actual starters on the menu. Drinks arrived—coke filled right to the brim, no ice, impossible to sip without spilling. It may seem minor, but it’s just another small sign of carelessness. After a wait, the waitress returned to say: “We don’t have any scallops today”. Why can’t the kitchen inform staff at the start of service so guests can be told when they order? I declined to order anything else in their place. Then came a long wait for the cod. The neighbouring table, which arrived about 10 minutes after me, got their fish and chips well before my order arrived. When my food finally came, it was truly awful. The salad looked thrown together—spinach mixed with limp, yellowing watercress and dried-out cucumber strips. The dressing, not mentioned on the menu, seemed to be just sesame oil. The cod was very thin, overcooked and very brown—not at all like the 'pearly white firm flakes' described. It was tough and leathery to cut and tasted off. This was not fresh fish—it was absolutely disgusting. I sent it back straight away. The manageress came over, said she had seen the fish, and agreed it wasn’t acceptable. I declined a replacement, said I’d rather leave, and offered to pay for the drinks. She said they were on the house. I left. That such dreadful food can be served under the name of a 'celebrity chef' is shocking—especially one who prides himself on local, fresh seafood. Given the location on Fistral Beach and the Stein brand, they probably rely on footfall. But if this is the standard, people will start going elsewhere. I honestly would have preferred a fast food burger. While there, I noticed a woman at a nearby table sending back a curry. The next day I met her—she turned out to be a colleague. She said the curry was small, bland, and overpriced, and she was charged extra for a poppadom—just like my tartare sauce. We later spoke with other colleagues working locally and not one had a good word to say about Rick Stein, Fistral. My recommendation: Avoid at all costs! After leaving I went to The Fish House, Fistral—right next door—and it was an entirely different experience. Fresh, well-cooked food, great service, and a reminder of how brilliant seafood in Cornwall can be.

Honestly absolutely faultless. Loved it, and I am a massive foodie and restaurant snob who never writes reviews! Perfect experience for me. Felt so welcome from the moment I walked in, greeted enthusiastically straight away despite arriving late in the day by myself with no reservation. They didn't try to catch you out by charging you for water, offering tap water which I was super impressed by, I've been caught out paying £8 for water before. No games like that here. The whole experience was completely unpretentious, happy, friendly staff, simple seating and food presentation, it all felt super authentic and like the money and effort was going into the right areas, the food and the staff. Beautiful views of the sea, great live music which I'm a sucker for and always adds to the atmosphere. The staff were literally singing and dancing, I loved that they were mostly in their own clothes too. As I say it felt so genuine and friendly, nothing pretentious about it at all. The menu was fairly limited - sign of a good restaurant! Do a few things well rather than a lot of things badly. I'm not a lover of fish and chips but Ricky Stein's place has converted me. Absolutely delicious meal, superbly cooked. Lovely meaty fish with loads of flavour, beautiful light batter and crispy skin, I didn't realise there was such an art to simple fish and chips. Very fast service and one of the cheapest places to eat I found in my whole time in Cornwall! I just popped in for a quick supper to finish my little solo surf trip and I left leaving with a huge smile on my face and leaving my first ever restaurant review. We had a better than expected experience. I was worried that, having not been able to book, we would be turned away or have a long wait. However, after a warm welcome at the door, we were shown straight to our seats. The staff all were all friendly and attentive. The restaurant was clean, and warmly decorated. We each had a curry, one cod, one veggie with a side of battered scallops. Tasty and warm. Only downside was it was served in a cardboard bowl, but not a problem really. The puddings are cute- served in a glass jar with a screw top so you can take one away for later if you’d like. We were disappointed with this restaurant. The seats are benches so it wasn't particularly comfortable. The food is served in disposable paper bowls which is appalling for the environment. We were shocked at just how much waste there is. It gets zero stars for environmental awareness. Three of the dishes were nice, although the curries were very small portions. The biggest issue for us was the lack of vegetarian options. There was one curry on the menu and smallprint at the bottom saying ask for more options. When we asked we were told there was just the one option so we ordered that and it was disappointing. It was two thirds rice with basically just a spoonful of curry. One of the main ingredients was cauliflower but the only cauliflower in there was two stalks, not even the florets. There was more sauce than substance. It was the same portions size wise for the other two currys. We actually had to to go to the supermarket for snacks afterwards because we were all still hungry which really shouldn't be possible. Overall, disappointed and won't return.

It was poor from the off - the Chippy “Tea” on both the website and the menu was unavailable with no reason given by the surly waiting staff. The regular fish and chips we ordered instead were average at best, when considering value for money. The real let down were the sauces: the curry sauce was as far removed from classic chip shop curry sauce as one could get; the gravy was thin and watery; the peas were a solidified lump of paste devoid of any flavour. The pre-emptive 7.5% tip on the bill was laughable given the level of service. My advice - eat literally anywhere else. You’ll have a much better experience.

Visited here recently having phoned the restaurant in advance to discuss whether they could cater for allergies for our son. We were informed on the phone this was fine so travelled to the venue and warmly welcomed at the door again discussing cater for allergies. When it came time to order we were advised that due to the risk of cross contamination in the kitchen that the chef had refused to serve us. Sadly this meant having to leave the restaurant late on Saturday night and find an alternative. It was a shame and sad experience that clear information couldn't have been provided upfront on the phone so we did not have to be disappointed. Not sure what processes the restaurant takes to cater for people with allergies so would advise looking elsewhere on that basis.

After a 25 min wait for table despite there being several empty tables we were finally acknowledged and taken to a table. Our order was taken within 5 minutes why the rush? I honestly don't know because it then took 50 minutes to be told that one of the dishes we ordered wasn't available. We made an alternative choice and waited another 20 minutes before three meals arrived, the 4th meal took another good 5 mins to arrive. The fish was small and luke warm, the chips were very crispy more like crisps and the mushy peas were cold. Terrible service and not high quality food. I’d like to think that the fries were fresh but if they’d been pulled our of a frozen bag they’d been even better. The mushy peas was just a pea puree, which came as a supplement. It came in a little pot and put on the wrong plate. I’ve honestly had much better and elevated mushy peas before in the UK. Only two staffs to service at least 80 seats. Half of the restaurant was not open to patrons. By the time we left, people were waiting in an empty area of the restaurant for a table. Simply put if I were Rick Stein, I’d be ashamed to have my name plastered on the door.

The food and waiting staff fabulous, what I wasn’t happy about was the female manager, who decided it was appropriate to chastise her staff in the middle of the restaurant, upsetting my party, no need totally unprofessional, so thank you for spoiling our lunch, and good luck to the poor staff

I visited Newquay on a recent trip with the family and also my first time to Cornwall. As expected, a visit to Fistral Bay was a must with the surfing and large sandy beach and the weather (considering it’s October..) was absolutely beautiful. Whilst at the bay we looked for options of food, one of which was Rick Steins restaurant, nicely located looking out over the beach. You can choose either Takeaway or restaurant sit in however on my visit the Takeaway option was 25 minute wait as it was busy so we decided to move into the restaurant. The staff were friendly inside and the food was nicely cooked, however the only thing i must say is to expect expensive prices. A fish and chips is almost £18 and you only get a small handful of chips and a decent sized bit of cod (which was cooked lovely i must add and the batter was perfect!) however as people have mentioned in previous reviews you are paying for the brand name. A gin and lemonade came to almost £8 for a single aswell. Overall - Nice food and service just maybe avoid if on a budget!

I've been here many times over several years. Food is always good, the cod is meaty and cooked really well. Nice coating of batter that is not too thick or thin or greasy, lovely food. The chips are a nice traditional chip shop chip, but cooked well and plentiful. The price is slightly on the higher side, but your buying into a brand as well as your food which is common this day in age. The prices of drinks is really where the money is, £2.50 for a 330ml can of lemonade, that is a high mark up. Something to watch out for is when they have live music on, the musicians (always different in my experience) are good, but they are ALL too loud. As a family in a small restaurant, we can't have a conversation. The live music is a welcome addition, but it's not a festival, turn it down. You can't book a table, but in my experience, if you are there at 5.30/6pm, you will have a table without a wait. Overall, lovely food, gorgeous views, friendly and cheerful staff. Well worth a visit and we will be back again.

The food was delicious, fish cooked to perfection 👌🏼 Service was fantastic. We were even offered some complimentary cockles, I think as part of their celebrating unsung seafood month. We hadn't tried cockles before but they were so tasty and would definitely order them in future. Great meal out.

The food was absolutely beautiful, and the atmosphere was fantastic. The service was also fabulous, with the servers being incredibly friendly and attentive. Just a heads-up: a 7.5% tip is automatically added to the bill. Overall, a great experience! Not to mention the beautiful view, we were treated to a lovely sunset. We look forward to returning again soon.

Went to restaurant at 6.45pm, closes at 8pm. Only about five tables taken, queues at both doors to get in. Told that could not be seated due to staff shortage. Half the restaurant was closed inside and all tables closed outside. Only one person working the restaurant floor, complete shambles. If it was that bad why open at all? Why have queues at both doors, why not close one door? Very disappointing and totally not what you would expect from a restaurant with Rick Steins name on it. Rubbish!

£12.75 for just the fish and this is the slop that was given. I was the only customer in there and I get batter with burnt bits stuck to it, that must be floating around in oil, such an easy fix. no care! no quality! u charge a premium price that is not up to scratch, I’d be embarrassed to serve that

Great tasting fish and chips, Had the Cod without batter which is the best so far in my Newquay trip. Of the other 4-5 dishes tried, the Nasi Goreng was the best tasting dish. Well worth a visit when in Newquay with great views of the ocean.

Being generous, the fish and chips are average. Fish was thin and greasy. Tartar sauce, almost pure butter and lots of bad chips. I'm sure Rick would have been much more critical.

Overall disappointed. Can't believe this is a Rick Stein restaurant. Ordered a goan cod curry, it had no real taste other than the few very hot chillies and the salt I added myself. The only good thing about it was the fish was cooked well. Other than that, it was tasteless and lacking much interest at all! Service was attentive and polite. Chairs were quite uncomfortable, but the view was great. Summary, not worth the money and quite disappointing visit wrapped in a good view. Wait for a table at the Stables above instead!

Was not impress with Luke warm to cold chips, the fish was full of oil look like it was cooked twice, friends onion rings was all burnt and full of oil, Waiter was polite friendly first class, Then bill arrived ,there was 3 items on the bill that we didn't have, only sauces at £2 each, While my son is explaining we didn't have the sauces which is no five minutes long, I was just about to leave a tip ,but told my son to pay the stupid £6 just so I didn't have to listen to somebody telling us we had the sauces, really, bill was well over £200 and iam dragged into saying we had sauces, Here's a good tip COOK YOUR FOOD CORRECTLY, Go to the fish and chip shop in Indian Queens for first class food

Food is ok at best, insanely overpriced (£50 for fish and chips and a drink for two!!!) and service is an absolute shambles. Oh, and forget about a plate at that price, as you get your food in a cardboard tub. Prepare to wait upwards of 45 mins for your food. We waited 40 mins after we finished eating without being seen to (nobody asked if we wanted drinks or desserts, etc. or even the bill), we went and got our own desserts menu and then nobody came over to us, despite trying to catch their eye and saying “excuse me” as they walked past. Got their attention and they said “just hold on a second while I see to this table…” - the absolute cheek of it. The lady managing the restaurant is a busy body that doesn’t actually achieve anything, which if anything is amusing to watch. I’d hate to be a local here and be subjected to this type of thievery.

My wife and I enjoyed our cod and chips, followed by lovely local ice cream. We would definitely come back again. Although this experience was ruined a week later when we received a £60 parking fine. For over staying 15 minutes. The beach car park is a private company. With APN cameras. Which is disappointing that this wasn't made clear to the people/ tourists visiting. Perhaps, a sign or note on the menu. Might help future clients. (Sorry about the rant Rick and staff). Definitely no reflection on the food and staff.

Ended up walking out. Waited at the door for nearly 10 minutes to be told a table would be half an hour. There were lots of empty tables so I understand it might’ve been a staffing issue but we were largely ignored by the front of the house as she was mostly standing at the bar. It was suggested that we try the takeaway service as this would be much quicker. After queuing for 15 more minutes same said front of house came and said food ordered here would be at least 30 minutes. It’s fish and chips ffs.

Such a shame been looking forward to visiting Rick Stein Fistral!! Fish & chips so oily & over cooked even the dog wouldn’t eat it. Manager didn’t want us sat by her as she was on her laptop opposite, she told the waiter to move us!! Waited 40 minutes for sub standard & over priced food. When the Environmental Health Officer made a surprised visit the manager kept her waiting so long she had to approach the bar to be spoken too!! I’d love a reply as I’m sure Rick would be ashamed……

Went specifically for the Dressed Crab and when ordering told no crab, ok we’ll have the Lobster, no lobster! Had fish and chips which were very good and the salt and pepper prawns. These were so over cooked they were virtually impossible to shell. Complained and was offered only pay for on of the prawns, I said I don’t want to pay at all as they were all very badly over cooked. A young man came over said I can only offer half price as it will mess up our stocks! No apology for the dismal dish and abruptly said that all he can do. I paid 9p over the half price for the prawns but by this time I just wanted to leave. Nice fish and chips but over all a bad experience at Rick Steins restaurant!

We were staying in Newquay and took the opportunity to get a takeaway from Rick Stein at Fistral Beach. To say the whole experience and food was underwhelming is an understatement. We didn’t book (as they advertise as a casual dining experience with no pre-booking required), however when we arrived we were told that there were no tables available and we would have to wait. But we could get takeaway instead. We decided that we wanted to try the food, so went to get a takeaway. After ordering, and paying a lot for a fish & chips takeaway, we then waited for our food. Luckily we could wait outside but it still took over 35 minutes for our food to be ready. When we ate the food it was underwhelming at best. The chips, scampi and sausages were no better than our local chip shop back home in Somerset. We thought that maybe we paid extra for the grilled cod, but that was covered in rocks of sea salt and over grilled. We would probably not order here again and instead go to a local Cornish fish restaurant or local fish & chip shop.

Went to Stein’s at Fistral for a drink. As locals we have been here many times and every time the service is terrible. I have never come across a less ‘customer centric’ establishment. You wait where the sign tells you to wait but everyone ignores you, so you go to the bar to see if you get more luck there. No. Yesterday I was ignored by 6 members of staff…. including the Manager! In the end I had to ask if anyone could serve me because I was being ignored. I must admit, at that point the bar tender was quite apologetic, it was a shame she service the beer in a cup with lipstick on. Also, whilst I was waiting I saw two other people have to grab the attention of the staff to assist them. It’s just aweful and really needs sorting. Not the standard Rick would expect I’m sure!

We were very excited to come to try the food here. We must say it is very disappointing and overpriced. We ordered chips and cheese from the takeaway counter and the cheese was barely sprinkled on top- not entirely what we expected! It also took 30 mins to order 5 hot drinks. The service was stretched and they were very understaffed.

Being local and never had Steins takeaway before we saw the forgotten fish and chips on the menu at the excellent price of £11 . Fish was pouting and was lovely, plenty to eat, chips not greasy and tasty, tartar sauce homemade and delicious. After reading the reviews I was pleasantly surprised. Will use again and definitely try the next forgotten fish on the menu.
