Richie Indian restaurant and takeaway in Torbay

This was possibly the best Indian meal we have ever had. Food was cooked to order and so fresh, the flavours were amazing. A family run business that takes pride in their cooking. Really lovely owner that took the time from the kitchen to come and see if you’re happy with the food. Food takes a little longer to come out but that’s because it’s not batches cooked, it’s cooked once you order and is well worth the wait. Wish we lived closer as we definitely be regulars here.

Good food, good service and a nice location.

We returned there after several years, the owner is still as friendly, the food was fresh and excellent, but I put one star less because we were cold, the restaurant was not heated or barely heated. Plus a horrible smell in the men's and women's toilets, I saw everyone coming out disgusted too, it's a shame it ruins everything.

De plus une odeur horrible dans les WC homme et femme , je voyait tout le monde ressortir dégoûté aussi c est dommage ça gâche tout .

I visited last night with a friend. We found this place on Google and it had the most/best reviews so we went for it and SO pleased we did. Possibly the best curry I have ever had and I'm not doing what too many people today do and call everything "amazing". This place actually is amazing. The food is fresh, tasty, novel, and plentiful. It's South Indian so a little different to a tandoori house. Lots of coconut but has the usual madras, korma, dansak, biriani etc. We both had madras (1 lamb, 1 prawn) and they were both phenomenal. Oh and we started with a rice pancake filled with a potato mix. It was something else. Just go and try. You will thank me.

We are regulars to Richie’s because the food is fabulous and it’s a real family business. The restaurant itself is a little rustic but has plenty of charm but the real star is the food. We usually order more than we can eat so we can try as many dishes as possible but take home any leftovers which is an amazing treat at home. We usually order the Masala Dosa - these are huge so we share between two and are super fresh and crispy on the outside and filled with delicious spiced potato. The Sambal veg curry is delicious but also quite spicy. The coconut chutney in addition is also fantastic and unlike anything else I ever tasted. We usually have the Mushroom Bhaji - a delicious curry that makes me want to go vegetarian every time. The depth of flavour is amazing and it’s just got something else I’ve never tasted in every other Indian restaurant I’ve been to - and I’ve been to a great many. I also love the Paratha bread which is just amazing. Very different from Naan - super crispy and fluffy layers that pull apart - delicious! I also really enjoy the Chicken Tikka Tamil Nadu and the Lamb Biryani. You must, must try the Dosa though - absolutely unique in this part of Devon. The food is also extremely reasonably priced and the service might be a little slow but that’s because it is fresh! Worth the wait for sure. Although you could get a takeaway I would highly recommend that you go there as the Dosa and Paratha need to be enjoyed immediately after cooking to really get the best results but otherwise a takeaway Richie’s is better than no Richie’s at all! We’ll be back again in a few weeks as always. Thank you Jothi and your family for a wonderful meal. See you again soon.

The food was cooked fresh to order so a little bit of a wait but the taste was fantastic Well worth the wait. I have eaten curry in many places and this curry was one of the best.

We didn't eat in, we had a delivery. The delivery was missing a few items and the delivery driver was exceptionally rude and confrontational. I've never experienced anything like it. I had to call the police. From what he was saying,the delivery driver seemed to be from the restaurant/family in particular and not a general delivery driver. Awful, confrontational service and I will never order from this establishment or family again and I'd advise others to do the same.

Excellent food and staff . We enjoyed the meal which was cooked to order. The staff were friendly and helped with our choice of meal. Definitely will be back.

This was a very tasty Indian meal and I very much enjoyed the experience. The restaurant interior was slightly dated and service was quite slow but the food was certainly worth the wait and is fairly prices.

We visited this restaurant for a family meal, we had various dishes off the menu, including the delicious 'Porata bead', which are like nothing else we've ever had!! All the meals were cooked to perfection, the flavours incredible. The staff lovely and very attentive, I highly recommend this as a must place to eat in Torquay, we will definitely go again when we next visit the town.

Got the South Indian curry and the naan bread alternative (can’t remember the name) And it was delicious! Recommend this place to anyone!!

The food was not good the male toilet was broken so you had to share the ladies, and that stank 😒, it was like someone had started a restaurant in there front room , and were still learning how it works

4 pareo we so had curry curry and all though it boarded on un Eddie because of the disgusting amount of salt don’t think they will be there for our visit next year

Fantastic. Really lovely food, really nice service. The lady who runs the restaurant was really friendly. We had the Dosa - and this was easily the best (and most generous) dosa I've ever had. We liked it so much we went back the next day and had another for lunch.

Probably the most authentic home style South Indian food I've tried. Absolutely fantastic. Torquay does not know what a gem it has on it's doorstep. Freshly cooked home style chapati that were phenomenal. Tarka dhal that was top class. This is the third time we've tried this restaurant and I am so glad we came again. Absolutely top food.

I live in London, but every time I visit the Torquay area, I insist on visiting Richie's. Love the idlis - never had them anywhere else! Fantastic food, good value, good service. Looking forward to the next time!

A meal that was different from the usual ‘English’ Indian. Fresh tastes rather than bulk manufacture. Very pleasant owner. Certainly return again.

Just enjoyed a delicious meal here with family members. Attentive hosts, freshly cooked to order authentic south Indian cuisine. And the speciality breads are a fine alternative to naan. Highly recommended.

Booked this for a get together for a birthday, had been before and was impressed with the food… service was lacking but happy to overlook that : Advised to get everyone’s food choices in prior to attending .. did that and took it in 4 days before .. everything was listed so we all knew who was having what , prices etc .. all that was to be decided on the night was the drinks .. asked to pay a £50 deposit ( wasn’t advised when phoning this was needed but happy to pay) restaurant has signs for cash only but magically a card machine was offered for the payment .. paid cash anyway.. but only cash on the night!!!! Hmmmm Some guests paid for drinks as they went.. this was then still added to the bill!! One item was forgotten from the order ,, most of us had eaten before this dish was eventually delivered .. It was very tasty albeit being late .. Everyone knew what they ordered.. no disputing on that front .. but the drinks added after was a shocker .. A large wine and soda in a pint glass eventually amounted to the person not knowing what they were doing and pouring practically a whole bottle into a tall glass.. weights and measures are not understood at all! A landlord of a pub was with us and tried to explain about weights and measures to the confused looking hostess .. There wasn’t a till receipt available of what was ordered as and when .. just lots of random pieces of paper .. so no wonder there was a mass confusion over £100 discrepancy.. Also there was only one functioning toilet on the night for the whole restaurant! Thank god it wasn’t really busy !! Overall very disappointed, ruined a celebratory evening out .. cannot dispute the lovely food .. but 14 of us will never return hence they will lose a lot of trade .. Torquay is a small place and word of mouth is everything!! It can make or break a business .. A birthday evening ruined

This spot is great for an indian family get-together, authentic indian taste and curries from both north and south-indian cuisines, reminding of taste from home.

The food was lovely but it was a complete shambles when paying the bill. We were a large group. The lady tried to overcharge us by a large amount, going through it all took 45 mins later we. It was a birtday celebration nightmare.

Came here for a birthday meal for my mum with a group of friends .. Had to give the menu choice prior , then told at the day of turning up with menu choices we had to pay a £50 deposit., Day of meal was a shambles .. No one knew what they were doing .. overcharged big time on alcohol.. saying we were £100 outstanding!! Where did the £50 deposit go???? Absolutely disgusting service and no idea about weights and measures on booze.. illegal !! ( we came with a landlord of a local pub who knows his onions!!) Ruined the birthday celebrations.. won’t be coming back.. such a shame as the food is good No idea what they are doing .. Also says cash only .. but when asking for the deposit miraculously a card machine was produced.: Hmmmmmmm where does all the cash go??? Very disappointing

I will never ever go to this Indian restaurant ever again my husband and I both had food poisoning. My husband was in hospital for two weeks. I went down for a week never ever go there again

We just visited Richie’s and had the most amazing authentic delicious South Indian food. It reminded us of the food we would eat when we lived in Tamil Nadu a few years ago. We had the Idly, Masala Dosa and chicken Biryani. It was all home cooked and freshly made to order. Flavours were so authentic and so tasty, especially the Idly and Dosa. The service was great and Jothi, front of house, was lovely and friendly. If we are ever visiting on holiday here again then we will definitely be back. Can highly recommend Richie’s if you want a real taste of Tamil Nadu, South India. Thank you for a lovely evening!

Food good, but service needs work. Sat down for 5 minutes without being offered a drink (had to go and ask), and given the bill at the end before we had requested. They missed out on if we wanted desserts, or more drinks. They all seem lovely, but perhaps are new to working in a restaurant environment.

We were looking forward to our Indian and were grateful that they allowed our dog in. However, we were all disappointed by our meals. We had vegetarian madras, chicken madras, pilau rice, and chips. All were very bland and tasteless. We won't be returning.

Regrettably, our opinion is very much at odds with that of other reviewers. It must have been an off night. Service was extremely slow (not helped by the waiter losing our order altogether). Our starters came without the sauce and I had to ask twice for our drinks. We both ordered Vindaloo, a wonderful curry with layers of flavour originating in Portuguese Goa. Sadly, unlike the one we had 3 days earlier in a different restaurant, the only flavour in this was chilli and almost too hot to eat. No subtlety whatsoever. Our onion bhaji was overfried and had a burnt taste. Samosa and porathas where, however, extremely good. One admin niggle. If a restaurant only takes cash there should be a clear and prominent sign outside. In this day and age we do not really carry cash and it was pure luck we had enough.

Surprised to see a Tamil restaurant here, taste was extremely good.. had parotta, veg gravy, masala dosa, veg fried rice , onion Bhajji, mango lassi, etc..wonderful service by the team..walkable from the beach..

I'm from South India and I can tell that this is the best restaurant with authentic taste of everything they make. I have been visiting it almost every week when I'm here on business. Recommend for good spicy and tasty food.

After having a bad experience at Mahabareth, Bangladeshi owned restaurant the night before (Friday), I really felt we deserved to be treated to a far better meal on Saturday. We found Richie restaurant to have good reviews and responsive to anything of a negative review, which proves they care in the quality of their food and service. We had the best experience of home style authentic cuisine, with good portion sizes. The flavours were just perfectly spiced. We had fried Cauliflower starters pieces, main course as King Prawn dish, Dosa, boiled rice and chappatti's. Wish we had discovered this restaurant earlier while visiting Torquay, would have visited much more. The staff were really attentive, and I will never forget the taste of the food. Pleasant small restaurant. Would definitely recommend to anyone and visit again and again.

This family run Indian restaurant is simply the best tasting food. Every mouthful is a taste sensation. The family is so very lovely and very welcoming. I consider the food and drinks prices are excellent. You won't be disappointed.

Excellent food and great service.

First time visit, read good reviews online. Nice enough atmosphere. But food took over an hour and a half to arrive, it was all just.... ok, disappointingly very very salty. They seem to be focused on sending out deliveries. The bill took ages to be sorted. Despite us explaining we needed to leave asap to catch the last train. Not that I'm in the area often, but will try somewhere else on my next visit.

We had an exceptional meal at the Richie , the food was very nice. Especially the poratha, first time I have had it . The staff were very friendly and helpful.

Very pleasant experience. First of all the food was very good, large portions and good quality, no complaints there. Only issue and I’m being extremely picky here is the location and exterior of the restaurant does not do it any favours and is slightly off...

What a really friendly atmosphere. The food was absolutely delicious and the plates were piled high. We ended up taking a "doggie bag" home with us. They couldn't do enough for us. Will definitely go back there.

Have vistied Torquay 2 times and I dont miss going to this place. Authentic Indian food, marvellous taste, lovely people. Mind you - because this place is always in high demand, better book before hand. Order sometime might take a while to come, which is quite understandable due to the crowd which comes in including take aways orders. Madras Chicken curry with Pilau rice and Parothas is a MUST HAVE !! Going there again if I am in Torquay - well done to whole team !! Excellent stufff.

Dear readers, I recently had the pleasure of dining at an Indian restaurant that I cannot recommend highly enough. From the moment we stepped through the door, my wife, daughter, and I were blown away by the exceptional customer service provided by the staff. The restaurant is beautifully decorated and has a warm, inviting atmosphere. We were seated promptly and our waiter, whose name I believe was Raj, was incredibly friendly and attentive throughout our meal. He went out of his way to ensure that our dining experience was nothing short of exceptional. The food was simply outstanding. We ordered a variety of dishes, from spicy curries to mild biryanis, and each one was cooked to perfection. The spices and flavors were balanced perfectly, making for a truly memorable meal. But what really stood out to us was the kindness and hospitality of the staff. Our daughter has a severe nut allergy, and the restaurant went above and beyond to ensure that her meal was safe and enjoyable. They took the time to double-check all the ingredients in her food, and even made a special dish just for her to ensure that there was no risk of cross-contamination. Overall, our dining experience at this Indian restaurant was absolutely wonderful. The food was delicious, the atmosphere was inviting, and the customer service was truly exceptional. I cannot recommend this restaurant highly enough, and I will definitely be returning on my next visit to the area. Thank you to the entire staff for making our evening so special. Found this place just on Google after our drive down and I can't express enough how amazing it was very welcoming and food was outstanding we had to ask for takeaway tubs even stayed late after closing for us to finish meals a massive thank you for great food and service
