I pre ordered. Was told to collect in 20 minutes. Turned up on time. Lots of people waiting outside looking fed up. I was waiting 50 minutes. No apology to anyone for waiting such a long time for their order. Food was soggy and very small portion for a medium size meal. Also bland. Curry pots and mushy pea pots filled half way. Will stick to our usual on the pier in Paignton from now on.

Went here as couldn't be bothered to wait in the london fryer queue. What a mistake that was, the fish and chips was vile. The 'large' fish was a disgrace and the chips tasted like they were recooked from the previous days leftovers. They were dry and tasted awful. Anyone who thinks about avoiding the queue 150yards away, don't. This place was good years ago but is now dire and up there with the worst chippys i've had food from.

Have fish and chips here every Saturday, but has since been taken over the fish was frozen rubbish and chips dried up the price has gone up by over £1: Richards used to be best in bay but now taken over it is the worst

Highly recommended for fish & chip lovers .. according to my fish loving parents & bf. The best fish & chips they've had this year. As a vegetarian I can highly recommend the cheesy chips!

Disappointing to put it mildly. I live locally and visit other fish and chip shops in the area. I had not been to Richards Fish Cafe for a while and decided to try it. Absolutely terrible with a dried out piece of cod after a half hour wait. Others available nearby but won’t be going back again! Avoid!

Came in for a meal waiting ages it was very very cold - had some nice meals in the past but really not impressed! No one Welcomed us and we got a look as we walked out! Very disappointed

Good service on the day. Fish portion was small for a regular fish. The fish smelt as though the oil was a few days old, not nice. Won't be going there again. Back to the Ocean Wild.

the portion sizes of both the normal cod and the normal chips were small. avoid if your hungry. the staff were not very friendly and almost rude

Jokers!!!! My husband went in for a takeaway 10 minutes before their advertised closing time. He was greeted with ‘We’re closed!!’. These people have been rude to us twice now!!! They don’t deserve their business! They’re only open a few hours a week as it is!!!!!

the first time in there and it will be my last. 2 young girls serving were more interested in chatting than working .Fish was quite small for what I paid for chips were dry .Can honestly say it was a waste of money for me . So I wont go back there again

Since moving to Preston my partner tried the other chip shop over the road ...with disappointment we tried Richards.Wow. What can I say..the girls are friendly. The place is spotless! The chips are beautiful...the fish is fresh and very tasty. I also can recommend the cod roe which is gorgeous. I just love the place. 5 out of 5...Wish Richards was open more! As I won't use the other one but have been reassured that come the summer their open abit more! Great...Thank you Richards for good fish and chips everytime.

My fiancé went in for two spam fritters. He was made to feel awful and a nuisance because that’s all he wanted!! A lady (who he assumes is the owner / owner’s wife) came from the back and asked whether he wanted salt and vinegar on his ‘just spam fritters!’. I mean, talk about rude and childish!! This place only opens a few hours a week. They should be grateful for the business!!! It was nearly empty because everyone is in the better fish and chip restaurant up the road!!

This used to be the best chippy around here. I think that it has seriously gone down hill in the last two years. Would not recommend.

We were recommended to eat fish and chips here, so we did. We were not disappointed, best fish and chips I've had for a long time.

Have used this fish and chip cafe and takeaway for some years but sadly will be looking elsewhere on my next trip to Paignton. The last couple of visits have been disappointing with the fish on this visit looking and tasting more like the frozen product from the shops,the shop seemed very quiet on the Friday evening I visited so it seems others agree.

Would always come back here for more brilliant fish and chips, had the most lovely piece of fish ever. See you in August when we come down again....

Went for an evening stroll from neighbouring Torquay and fancied a bag of fish and chips. The first chippy was chocka so we continued down the street and discovered Richards. I'm so glad we did! We both had small cod and chips to take away. The portions were huge and tasted absolutely superb! The food was fresh, straight out of the fryer. The batter was light and crispy. How can such a simple dish taste so perfect? They say 'simplicity is genius '. So Richards, you are a genius Sir! That fish and chips went down an absolute treat!

Had haddock and chips tonight, first time visit. Opened door and staff welcomed me immediately and placed my order. Fish and chips cooked to order, once ready they were wrapped separately salt and vinegar added before and into a bag for homeward travel. Staff were really great wishing me to have an enjoyable meal and evening. On arrival at home everything was perfect with beautiful white fish delicately battered and lovely tasty chips. Plenty of everything to leave you having not only enjoyed the experience but also full. See you soon.

We received a lovely welcome at Richard's. We took and seat in the bright, clean fish bar and we were served by a friendly and helpful waitress who made our visit special. The fish and chips were great - huge portions and the fish was really delicate and not too greasy.Couldn't recommend it more. Best fish and chips we've had in ages.

Crisp, light batter on fresh fish and chips that are crunchy outside and soft in the middle. Ask for your favourite fish in advance and they will ensure it is available for you if it is in the market. Nice to eat inside and no overpowering cooking smells. Outdoor tables available when the weather is warmer. Pleasant, friendly staff.

We live in the same road as this takeaway, and get one regularly for a treat. The food is lovely, service is very fast, and staff friendly and helpful, what's not to like? It's also very good value, and caters for all.

Called in at 18.00 on Tuesday 25th September for a sit down meal, we weren`t disappointed, a lovely meal of freshly cooked Fish & Chips, the batter was thin,light and non greasy. Take away trade was steady. Prices were reasonable and the Cafe is positioned close to the No.12 bus route. Would definitely visit again

Arrived at six fifteen and secured s table. Ordered cod and chips and haddock and chips. Was coming back after previous visit a year or so ago and while waiting for meal to arrive overheard under new ownership. Long may their ownership continue. Excellent meal even better than last time - cod and haddock both lovely succulent fish and chips were awesome. Thank you and highly recommended.

Food made to order so nice and fresh, if you tell them you are eating outside they put your order in a nice tray with plastic knives and forks. The food was cooked to perfection.Was given a bit of history about the place by a local. When the original Richard was doing the cooking it was fantastic. he then sold it and the people that took over were not in the same league and everybody thought the food was terrible. they sold out to somebody else and it was "ok". Now on to the present owner and they are now awesome! Don't sell up! Had two visits there, on the second visit if I had got there five minutes later I would not have got any as they had sold out at 7.45pm.lovely grub!

Visited here twice as it was so good. The fish is cooked to order. Good selection of fish. I had the haddock the first visit and cod the second with a pot of tea. Ample parking on the road. Few steps to get in but easy to get up.

It's been a long, long time since I've so excited about the good old potato chip!Non oily, crunchy outside with a fluffy middle. Beautifully cooked cod, slightly oily but still delicious with the mushy peas. I had the steak and kidney pie, filling and great gravy! Worth the car journey!

Richard's Fish Cafe, a Chippy in the best old-fashioned tradition, offers a friendly service, good quality fish and there is certainly no champagne to be found in the place. Great! Very quiet when we purchased for a takeaway. Freshly cooked and pleasant staff - particularly the young ladies who were on the till. Noted it had been refurbished since our last visit. Limited opening hours but very clean and worth the visit.

We decided to have a takeaway lunch on Friday 22/4. All cooked to order, the fish was delicious,the chips were also very good. My wife had a burger which she said was very nice, and was presented as she had asked.The staff were very friendly, the place was immaculately clean. Prices very good also. Will definitely return. As the title says this is. A great plaice. For fish and chips, eat in or take away. Staff are always friendly and the cafe is well worth a visit whether local or on holiday.

My wife and two daughters are staying locally on holiday and were advised to try Richard's Fish Cafe. So pleased we did. We all had absolutely delicious fish and chips.Our entire meal (take out) was cooked to order. Perfectly cooked fish; lovely plump and brilliant white cod meat covered with lovely golden crispy batter. Chips were also of a very high quality. Nice and tasty, no grease in sight. Lovely chips with a very slight crunch on the outside due to a quality deep fry and lovely fluffy potato on the inside. As I said at the start 'Delicious!'Our two young daughters had a child portion cod and chips served in their own little picnic style box. They ate the lot and loved the small touch of a little candy lollipop placed in the bottom of the box by the lady serving us.Portion sizes were good too. Our two daughters had just then right amount and for £3 a portion (childs cod and chips) was very well priced. My wife and I both had cod that were of a good size (mine a large) had both ends off either side of a good sized dinner plate. Both our cods had meat end to end; not like some places where the batter is about 4 inches longer on either side of the fish inside. Just over £10 for a large and regular cod plus large chips I thought was also very well priced.The cafe itself was clean, tidy and very welcoming. There was already a family eating at one of half dozen or more tables. All tables and condiments on top all nice and clean with no grease on the floor like some cafes.It felt like the cafe is family run and we thought the service was lovely. Service with a smile, a thankyou, and a 'enjoy' which is sadly all too uncommon these days.All in all a great cafe/take away that you really must try for traditional and great fish and chips! Has to be in my top three fish and chip shop meals ever for taste and quality and the top one for customer service of staff and cleanliness of the cafe. Excellent.

From the moment I contacted Richards Cafe, I felt like I would be looked after. The company I work for were doing some work in the area and we needed to order food for 20 people a couple of times during the week, with a mix of vegetarian and GF requirements. The staff were helpful and the food was prepared quickly ready for me to collect. The chips are some of the best I've had from a chip shop, and I was also impressed with the vegetarian options and thankful that the chips were Gluten Free. Enjoying a short break in Paignton, considered travelling down to Dartmouth to visit a famous seafood restaurant - but decided to use TripAdvisor to find somewhere more immediately local. Richard's Fish Café enjoyed excellent reviews. No wonder! The Café was spotlessly clean and sparkling. The young Lady serving and made us very welcome, taking the order quickly, the restaurateur confirmed the types of fish, and sizes available - then started cooking the choice freshly. The meal was served perfectly, together with beautiful chips, peas and fresh teas, with perfect, friendly service. Excellent value, and well recommended for a hearty fish meal in a very professionally run establishment.

This is one of two Fish and Chip shops almost opposite each other and the one we always use. The portions at 'the other place' may verge on the gargantuan which probably accounts for the queues of customers out the door who, one can only surmise, demand quantity over quality but Richards have the edge on quality with portions that are more than adequate and importantly lack the long delays experienced elsewhere.

Riding around seeing the scenery, we spotted this cafe. We were able to park nearby and saw that it was "eat in" and well as "take away". We had the pensioner's portion which was adequate. Pleasant couple in charge and a short wait whilst it was cooked fresh. A pure delight all round. Well worth seeking out.

Having seen the reviews I was expecting great fish and chips. The staff serving were very polite and welcoming and it was nicely busy. I got a table but it was next to the take away till and people kept on bumping into me. The food was well presented but my cod seemed small relative to other people and it was a little tasteless. The batter was very heavy going, very thick and greasy on the underside. Chips were fine and mushy peas very nice. I wonder why chippies insist on uaing Brakes Brothers ketchup and brown sauce sachets, not nice and brown sauce is particularly nasty! Nice and clean and a good walk from central Paignton. Not a bad price though.

I was raving about this place to everyone, but my last few visits haven't been great. Lovely staff and all clean and tidy but the quality has slipped a bit and I'm sure the prices have shot up. Hope it picks up soon.

5* we are currently having a holiday at South Bay holiday park (brixham), we decided too travel to Richards fish cafe for our tea, very glad we did! All of our meal was very yummy, kids fish cake and chips (home made fish cake!!), cod and chips, & chicken burger and chips! Good portion size too. would definitely recommend!!

Having moved back to the bay this was our local chippy and had been for 20+ years.It has changed hands a couple of times since ' Richard' left but the style has remained much the same.I think the food eaten in the restaurant is of excellent quality but the takeaway lets it down.The fish has shrunk in size over the last year or so and the chips are often either the small bits from the ends of the potatoes or they have been reheated. It is still probably the most consistent Chippy in Paignton but I am on the lookout for something better,

Having been recommended Richards by a family member we call there almost at the end of the lunch time service on the way to Preston Sands, close by. Great fish and chips, cooked fresh. The owners were very welcoming and friendly. A great choice for a late take-a-way lunch. Now I know why the locals recommend Richards as the best chippy in Preston (Paignton)

Having been coming to Paignton for a number of years, this was the very first fish and chips we had after arriving. Back then (7 years ago) the fish and chips were amazing, and it's no different this time around. The place hasn't changed apart from new owners ( it looks like ) and the food was simply outstanding. We opted to sit down and have food rather than take away as we've always done, so grabbed a table a browsed. The staff are friendly and the young lady who came and took our order was polite and friendly. We ordered medium cod and chips twice and a children's burger and chips. Like previously and similar to others, you wait for the food as it is cooked fresh to order. When it arrived it was amazing. A good size portion of fish with a crisp batter, and fluffy white cod inside. The chips were golden and crispy on the outside, very tasty and fluffy on the inside. This place knows how to cook fish and chips. Yes there are others, yes you can get fish and chips in the various cafe's around town, but only this place cooks it to perfection. Simply gorgeous

We had read reviews on this chip shop and we where staying nearby in goodrington sands, it was delicious and enjoyed by Us All so much we returned the following week for more fish was melt in the mouth delicious

Found this cafe whilst looking for somewhere to eat. What a lovely little cafe! Service was excellent, best fish and chips I've eaten in a long whilst - fresh from the fryer. Downside, as with a lot of places I frequent, is the need to keep the salt and pepper pots right next to where tables are being sprayed plus, the clothes used will have chemicals on them and then the server touches food! Not impressed with that but have to say, has good atmosphere and service is very quick

We bought fish and chips from here to eat on the beach. The staff were very friendly and offered to put our food in a tray which made it alot easier to eat. We were given a knife and folk aswell. Everything was cooked fresh and tasted amazing. It was good that we went back the following day, but unfortunately they were closed. Id highly recommend this place to anybody.

When at the British seaside one is spoilt for choice in terms of fish and chips ... the constant unfortunately seems to be the average quality of what used to be the national dish.So its always worth searching out something just that little bit better and a quick Trip Advisor search saw us head just off the seafront to Richards Fish Cafe.A little wait ensures your fish, whether it be cod, haddock or rock is cooked freshly in whatever size you want it.The batter on the fish was delightfully light and tasty perfect amount.The accompanying chips are tasty and not being a massive chip shop chip fan these were certainly in the upper echelons of chippery.Well worth the extra hassle of searching out the quality on offer here over and above the average fare offered elsewhere.

Easily the best fish and chips in Torbay. The staff are always so polite and cheerful, the prices are really good and the portion sizes are excellent. Consistently top quality hot and delicious food, plus just a very short stroll from the beach!

I am saddened that I have to give my honest opinion to this highly recommended fish and chip café with a good reputation.My last review after so many recommendations was of a high opinion and rightly so as the food was great.Our plan on Friday evening was to dine on fish and chips on the beach with a chilled bottle of vino to enjoy the great summer evening.The fish bar was busy as expected with plenty of staff, the service was helpful but sadly they had run out of regular cod, so opted for haddock.Sadly the quality had dropped, the chips were not freshly cooked and had been sat in the warmer for some time and their consistency was not enjoyable. My haddock was definitely defrosted for some time and equally lost it's consistency, the batter was thin and well below standard, a good batter is thick and golden despite coming from a batter mix in a sack.I'm sorry Richard's has not upheld it's reputation this time and we shall not return!!

Great fish and chips excellent price friendly staff but on the down side slow service that I am sure will improve when they start dealing with customers in the shop rather then treating the phone orders as more of a priority.

Part of our holiday plan had been to eat fish and chips by the sea, we didn't quite manage to eat them by the sea but outside the shop was pretty good. Cooked to order so a little wait but was quite impressed fish batter thick, golden crunchy same with chips. The fish itself was a bit meh but that was more to do with type of fish? Children loved the wooden forks for eating with, it's the little things. I think this Fish & chip was half the price of our local one!

Great fish shop, we had a takeaway and took it down to the sea front and it was utterly delicious! The restaurant itself looked clean and inviting and had a great menu. The girl behind the counter was very helpful and polite and offered my daughter a lolly for after her fish and chips if she was good and ate it all it up (she's 3years) but she didn't need that encouragement, never seen her eat fish and chips so fast!Would definitely recommend.

After consulting TripAdvisor, we walked from the station, past no less than four other Chippies to get there - in the rain! When we got there, we were greeted by a warm and friendly member of staff, and were served in reasonable time. The batter was crisp and dry, without so much as a hint of grease anywhere - one of the best fish & chips I've ever had. Glad we didn't stop off at one of the town centre ones for an easy life.

After the last reliably good chippy that I knew in Paignton changed hands and became unusable I decided to try this one.It was a very busy Friday evening with lots of people waiting for their orders,many were sat at the tables inside and I nearly moved on thinking they were all eating in.There were at least 5 people behind the counter tripping over each other but orders only came out very slowly.I think they were trying to cook everything to order,fine on quiet nights but not viable on busy ones.I eventually found a table to sit at and my order was taken,took a little while but portions were big and meal was good,no problems there!This is a small cafe but there were drinks dispensing machines everywhere leaving only a small space for people to stand and wait,I would have to question the wisdom of this as I did not see a single drink dispensed. To sum up good food but the service and shop needs sorting badly.

Rude staff, not just some all of them. Thw older staff just wanted to say nasty things about the london fryer up the road, which isnt professional at all. Havent been back since, food isnt worth the price and the staff arent worth the time.

Not normally one to rave about fish and chips and have never left a food review before. Truth is, I'm not even that much of a fan of fish & chips, and usually end up leaving about half my meal when I do, on the odd occasion, order it. However, this place put the best piece of fried fish on my plate that I've ever eaten. Not super keen on the chips but then again I don't like english style chips full stop - but the fish amazing! Crisp fresh flakey not too oily, not too much batter, not too salty - just perfectly cooked fish - deep fried. Not bad going. And the fried mushrooms, mushy peas and coleslaw were all excellent as well! Cheers

We visited here after reading Tripadvisor reviews and we were not dissapointed, we walked from Goodrington Sands to the chip shop so we had built up an appetite.We opted for regular fish and chips which was just the right amount. The food is cooked to order and the chips were lovely with the fish having just the right amount of batter. The staff were friendly and seemed to really value the custom.

We called and had fishcake and chips. The fishcake and chips were the best we have had for a very long time. They are new owners and I think they will be very successful based on our experience. Very big fishcake and lots of chips, excellent value and quality.

We arrived just before 2pm, not realising that they were closing - but they were happy to fry fresh cod and chips for our family of four (good value at just 18.00 for 2 adult and 2 child portions plus bread and a drink).It was pouring down so the owner suggested places for us to go and eat in the car - delicious fish, not bad chips and a fab view of the sea. There is only one place in Torbay for chips.Here.All cooked fresh, nothing sitting about going soggy. Chips are hot, crispy and tasty. I'm not able to eat wheat so I always have the chicken rather than risk not getting all the batter of the fish, but it is the best cooked chicken for miles.There are only half a dozen tables, but I like to eat in. It's warm in the winter and always spotlessly clean. Staff are happy, friendly and efficient.For a simple, well cooked meal at a good price.This is it.

I have not visited Richards in many years and tonight decided to give it a try.We ordered 2 cod and chips to takeaway after a long wait as they were busy we rushed home (5 MIN DRIVE) to enjoy our fish and chips. Sorry to say we were dissapointed, instead of that beautiful flaky fresh white cod hidden within a crisp batter that was Richards trademark the cod tonight was mushy, dull and the batter was soggy, not nice. As a positive I will say the staff were efficient and friendly even though it was very busy and the girls were rushed off their feet they still had time for a smile. Sadly we won't be returning

Great fish and chips, as always will return as they do fresh food at great prices. Perfect sized portions everytime!

We went to Richards after the reviews we read and were not disappointed. Fish cooked to order and lightly battered. Lovely chips enjoyed by me,the wife and 4 year old daughter. Portions just right. Both Richard and wife were attentive and took time to chat. Please find your way here and ignore the bad reviews which were a disgruntled former employee taking revenge!! Even a bit of gossip to wash down the great food. Thanks.

Have visited Richards fish shop a few times since new owners took over.......always pleasant and a welcoming smile and hello. Have sampled most things on menu and have always been happy with them.......still one of the best fish and chips in Paignton always hot and freshly cooked.......keep up the good work .

I was recommended to try Richard’s fish and chip restaurant near Preston beach in Paignton.I was warmly greeted by the staff who had explained they were due to close soon.We purchased our food and explained I had been waiting to try there chips for some time after being let down too many times by the London fryer across the road.I can highly recommend this fish and chip restaurant and take-away because they take pride in the chips they serve. A good fish and chip shop must always serve good chips which is rare to find in most take-away’s and for our ‘National Dish’.I will return and hopefully they will be consistent.

Found Richards place on here, and walked in on Sunday eve, both him and his super young assistant couldn't have been more friendly & welcoming.Everything the 4 of us ordered was first class's, hot , crisp and very tasty

Stumbled on this little gem by mistake and so glad I did! Lovely fresh fish cooked to order, best chips I've ever had! So lovely and crisp, not a bit of grease in sight. Staff are always friendly and chatty, no sullen teenagers! Very good value for money. Recommend Richards to everyone!
