My friend Iain and I met up early in Middleham ahead of a planned stable visit and were looking to find somewhere to grab a spot of breakfast. The village looked quiet and on passing the pub door I saw it was slightly ajar so made my way in to ask if they could help. Despite not being officially open and not at full strength staffing wise we were welcolmed by Midge who then went further still and offered to cook us breakfast and provide us with well needed pots of tea to accompany them. Midge was so helpful and the breakfast hit the spot perfectly. Thanks Midge!

Some friends and I were in the area for the weekend and had been walking near Middleham so called in for Sunday lunch. Have had a few indifferent Sunday lunches at various places so hopes weren’t high but we were pleasantly surprised. They had a choice of pork & beef , both of which can be hit and miss. However, our party had both the pork and beef and both were excellent. Plenty of fresh, well cooked vegetables and good Yorkshire puddings. Staff very friendly and a cosy place on a chilly afternoon. Will definitely go back next time I’m in the area.

First night at the Richard the Third Hotel in the beautiful village of Middleham, close to Leyburn, Wensleydale, North Yorkshire. Good night's sleep, great breakfast. The staff are really helpful and friendly. Our room was very clean and tidy. Comfy bed. Now off to look around the huge Middleham Castle, first construction of which began in 1067, just after the Battle of Hastings.

Difficult to know where to start. Pub is in the middle of the village. On the Tuesday evening we went there were lots of people sitting outside, some being rather noisey and obviously had too much to drink! Inside the pub is just tatty and dirty! Our table was situated directly opposite the Gents loo (nice!). None of the gents who went in had obviously operated someing as complicated as opening and closing a door, so it remained open while we were there (nice!). Scrawled on the wall by the gents in black marker is the word 'Gents' (very posh!). Pub is extremely dirty with tatty sticky tables. Food arrived quickly and was good, if a little bland. One of the veg options was missing and staff looked stunned when we mentioned this, saying they didn't have any more of this veg left! 10 mins later the veg appeared! If it was given a goood clean this could be a nice pub.

Rustic old school pub in the middle of the township of Middleham. Three hand pumps on including ales from Black Sheep Brewery, Theakstons and a Wensleydale, so all very local. Outside seating including on front so you can watch the world go by. Several other places to have a drink too so you can have a bit of a crawl. It does offer rooms and serves hot food. Dog friendly. Nice little pub 🍻 🐕

I am sure this village only manages to support the number of pubs you can chose from due to the local Castle and all the local studs! Certainly this is not a place to go out of your way to find! The trio of local sausages were tasty enough but came on a bed of sloppy mash (more reminiscent of badly made “for mash get Smash”!) which had no flavour and was swimming in too much gravy on the plate. The Shepherd’s pie was, conversely, very dry and not provided with any gravy, which it desperately needed. The chef sometimes needs to come out of the kitchen and talk with the diners. We certainly didn’t send our compliments back to the kitchen! This pub is decorated with copious paintings of horses, which is okay if boring, but the ‘graffiti’ that is part of the decoration fails to amuse in anyway.

I have just returned home from a two night stay at this location, and even as a solo business traveller, I could not recommend this place enough. The staff were very friendly, the food was exceptional, the room was clean and homely, and the atmosphere was wonderful. It gave me warm vibes of being in a classic community pub, and were I not having to have spent so much of the evenings working, I would have loved to have spent more time than I was able to in the bar area. Unfortunately I was unable to spend any time exploring the surroundings, however from what I did see during my trips in and out of the area, I would be very happy spending a long weekend here to explore the area. My only possible negative would be the poor WiFi signal in my room, but were I not travelling on business, I'd see this as a positive. Thank you for such a lovely stay, and I hope to revisit in the future on a personal adventure so I can enjoy the area properly!

Visited for Sunday lunch. The choice was either beef or pork. The non roast options was Scampi or Egg & Chips ( no mention of ham with it ). Limited to say the least. 2 of us had the roast beef and 2 had the scampi. The roasts came already served up in the kitchen. Not the end of the world but it would have been nice to decide for yourself how much veg and gravy to dish up. Not a huge serving. To be fair the others said the Scampi was ok. Waitress took the finished plates while someone was still eating - don’t like that. They also took the salt & pepper - again when she was still finishing her meal. What was the rush to clear the table - it wasn’t at all busy ? Probably won’t return - at least certainly not on a Sunday.

The lunch menu was OK offering the usual pub food. Bit surprised to be told that they’d have to check if still doing lunch when we enquired at 1:10pm during the week. Service was acceptable but wouldn’t describe as friendly. The lager and lemonade both seemed to be off so an underwhelming drink after a lovely morning’s walk. We stayed in Middleham for a family Easter break and visited the Richard iii pub for dinner on the first evening. It's a traditional pub, no frills and caters for local workers and walkers really. The prices aren't cheap (steak pie & chips £15) and we expected good quality pub grub, unfortunately the food was a real let down. Greasy tasting burger, very average chilli and a 'not great' pizza (cheap meat on the meat-feast) Lots of local workers still in their dirty clothes drinking right next to our table and swearing quite a lot in loud conversation, not exactly what you want during a £60 family meal. OK for a drink after a muddy dog walk but that's all.

A Saturday in mid March. A group of 6 of us had a look in for a drink and a bite of lunch. There were other customers in so there was a bit of atmosphere but it certainly didn’t seem overly busy. We got a seat, bought a beer, and perused the lunchtime menu. Then it got interesting - there was much confusion between the bar and kitchen staff as to which items on the menu were available or not. Orders were placed and had to be changed when it became apparent they didn’t have to basic ingredients/foodstuffs to make them. When our “baguettes” arrived they were just bread buns. A beef and onion bun lacked onion. Similarly, pork and apple lacked apple. 🍏 🙄 On speaking with staff they seemed particularly exasperated with things. They explained that the landlady had recently opened a cafe 4 doors up and rather than being organised and order foodstuffs for the cafe, she was merely raiding the kitchens at this pub leaving the stock depleted and not communicating this fact. This situation was not the fault of the kitchen or bar staff who seemed frustrated at it all. The place was just badly managed, had an air of chaos, and produced “baguettes” that weren’t and were missing items. Seems that the landlady should start running the place properly. Her staff certainly weren’t impressed!! Oh, and the ‘inspirational’ and ‘funny’ quotes written on the walls with thick black marker pen (with bad grammar) are just naff! Would we recommend the place. Nope. Would we go back again. Nope.

Not at all great. We had travelled 40 miles specifically to meet friends at that pub and chose it on account of the menu. We arrived to find that the website had been a year out of date. Everything we had wanted was not available and the alternatives were not appealing. Further, the Black Sheep beer was off and tasted like vinegar. Getting service at the bar was slower than it should have been. The whole visit was pretty well disastrous. If a venue like that, off the beaten track does not keep its website up to date, it does not deserve business.

....or any other meat for that matter. Service friendly but slow. Some people ordered at the bar, we were told to wait at our table. We all fancied something with sausages from Masham (7 miles away). When we were finally served......Sausages were off. Meat pie was off. Warm beef was off. In the end we settled for 2 oily baked potatoes with beans and a tuna bagette with a cremated bow and stern, delivered 10 minutes apart. To add insult to injury they tried to saddle us with a kings ransom of the full cost (£11) for sausages, baked potatoes and beans, minus the sausages. This oversight was swiftly corrected when pointed out. This place is the real McCoy, set in beautiful surroundings and steeped in history. It is wonderful inside and the staff were lovely. Its such a shame that the food was such a letdown, particularly so given that it was our first pub visit since early March 2020. We were so hungry that whilst waiting for service we found ourselves eyeing up the passing thoroughbred steeds with a good serving of culinary imagination.

Steak pie was not great. The canneloni, which appeared to have been sourced from the freezer section in Lidl, was inedible and one of the worst things I'd ever been served in a restaurant.

Yummy food and friendly service in the sunshine. Good social distancing measures. Right on the market square, so a good place to watch the tractors go by, which my son enjoyed.

So happy we found this little hidden gem on a dreary Sunday. When you walk in you’re immediately greeted by a lovely team of staff (mostly young girls). We opted for a Sunday dinner and it was so good we decided to stay for evening service for a pizza! I especially loved the uplifting quotes on the walls.

Little trip out to the Dales, stopped off at Middleham, found the dog friendly Richard III.Covid rules followed, sanitise and register, shown to a table and handed a couple of menus by friendly lass. Lots of choice, go for sausage bagatte and a ham bagette. Sausage came with a tasty onion pickle, chunky chips and a salad and was declared excellent. My ham one came with half a pig in it, chips and salad, proper portions and really really nice hame.Pint of Sheep and a Chiraz to accompany, followed by a rhubard and apple crumble with Brymor icecream. (Crumble was disappointing, had a funny taste, they did apologise, and promised to investigate, it was a bought in pud)Pud excepted it was a great meal, very happy.

Lovely pub, nothing flashy but a roaring fire at one end of the bar and a wood burner in the snug. The beer was some of the best I’ve ever had (Theakston’s).

Arrived at 16.35 on Bank Holiday Monday. I asked if they were still serving as a large section was not in use, they had cleared and moved chairs away from and area and were in the process of cleaning the coffee machine. A young girl said we close at 5pm, no smile, no hello. She was not happy when we ordered 2 coffees and sat down. At 16.55 she appeared over my shoulder and said "we close in 5 minutes" I replied yes I am aware of that and had not forgotten that we have been a great inconvenience to you!!! She then went outside to collect the A frame in puffing if her vape. Wrong person to work in a coffee house in a customer service job. Obviously didn't want to he there. Very rude no manners.

The owner of The Priory where we stayed in Middleham had heard positive reviews about the food at Dante Arms, so we went there for dinner one evening. Dante Arms came under new ownership about a month ago, and from the caliber of food and service we enjoyed, they will be in business for some time. My husband had the Wensleydale Beef and Ale (tender beef in gravy topped with a teetering puffed pastry). Having toured the Wensleydale Creamery the day before I was delighted to see Blue Wensleydale Pasta on the menu and had it. Light tangy cream sauce with fresh bell peppers over perfectly cooked pasta - what's not to love. And save room for dessert. We shared an order of cheese cake. That day's flavor was chocolate and I can't say when I've had better. The crust was crisp, the filling rich but light in texture and the fresh, tart raspberry drizzle was a perfect topper. Best wishes to the new owners!

We were on holiday in Leyburn and decided to visit the Brewers Fayre for Sunday Lunch. Very pleasant staff greeted us and we had a very enjoyable Sunday lunch. Good variety of roasts and vegetables. Would suggest booking for Sunday lunch
