I have just returned home from a two night stay at this location, and even as a solo business traveller, I could not recommend this place enough. The staff were very friendly, the food was exceptional, the room was clean and homely, and the atmosphere was wonderful. It gave me warm vibes of being in a classic community pub, and were I not having to have spent so much of the evenings working, I would have loved to have spent more time than I was able to in the bar area. Unfortunately I was unable to spend any time exploring the surroundings, however from what I did see during my trips in and out of the area, I would be very happy spending a long weekend here to explore the area. My only possible negative would be the poor WiFi signal in my room, but were I not travelling on business, I'd see this as a positive. Thank you for such a lovely stay, and I hope to revisit in the future on a personal adventure so I can enjoy the area properly!

Visited for Sunday lunch. The choice was either beef or pork. The non roast options was Scampi or Egg & Chips ( no mention of ham with it ). Limited to say the least. 2 of us had the roast beef and 2 had the scampi. The roasts came already served up in the kitchen. Not the end of the world but it would have been nice to decide for yourself how much veg and gravy to dish up. Not a huge serving. To be fair the others said the Scampi was ok. Waitress took the finished plates while someone was still eating - don’t like that. They also took the salt & pepper - again when she was still finishing her meal. What was the rush to clear the table - it wasn’t at all busy ? Probably won’t return - at least certainly not on a Sunday.

With a homely atmosphere and friendly staff this pub is an absolute gem. We enjoyed a tasty lunch and our son was really impressed by the vegetarian burger - which wasn’t the usual plant based “meat”. All meals were 10/10 and the chips and onion rings were superb. Cannot rate highly enough!

The lunch menu was OK offering the usual pub food. Bit surprised to be told that they’d have to check if still doing lunch when we enquired at 1:10pm during the week. Service was acceptable but wouldn’t describe as friendly. The lager and lemonade both seemed to be off so an underwhelming drink after a lovely morning’s walk. I got the impression that evenings would be a better time to visit as had events advertised on the board to suggest the locals attend / support

We stayed in Middleham for a family Easter break and visited the Richard iii pub for dinner on the first evening. It's a traditional pub, no frills and caters for local workers and walkers really. The prices aren't cheap (steak pie & chips £15) and we expected good quality pub grub, unfortunately the food was a real let down. Greasy tasting burger, very average chilli and a 'not great' pizza (cheap meat on the meat-feast) Lots of local workers still in their dirty clothes drinking right next to our table and swearing quite a lot in loud conversation, not exactly what you want during a £60 family meal. OK for a drink after a muddy dog walk but that's all.

A Saturday in mid March. A group of 6 of us had a look in for a drink and a bite of lunch. There were other customers in so there was a bit of atmosphere but it certainly didn’t seem overly busy. We got a seat, bought a beer, and perused the lunchtime menu. Then it got interesting - there was much confusion between the bar and kitchen staff as to which items on the menu were available or not. Orders were placed and had to be changed when it became apparent they didn’t have to basic ingredients/foodstuffs to make them. When our “baguettes” arrived they were just bread buns. A beef and onion bun lacked onion. Similarly, pork and apple lacked apple. 🍏 🙄 On speaking with staff they seemed particularly exasperated with things. They explained that the landlady had recently opened a cafe 4 doors up and rather than being organised and order foodstuffs for the cafe, she was merely raiding the kitchens at this pub leaving the stock depleted and not communicating this fact. This situation was not the fault of the kitchen or bar staff who seemed frustrated at it all. The place was just badly managed, had an air of chaos, and produced “baguettes” that weren’t and were missing items. Seems that the landlady should start running the place properly. Her staff certainly weren’t impressed!! Oh, and the ‘inspirational’ and ‘funny’ quotes written on the walls with thick black marker pen (with bad grammar) are just naff! Would we recommend the place. Nope. Would we go back again. Nope.

Not at all great. We had travelled 40 miles specifically to meet friends at that pub and chose it on account of the menu. We arrived to find that the website had been a year out of date. Everything we had wanted was not available and the alternatives were not appealing. Further, the Black Sheep beer was off and tasted like vinegar. Getting service at the bar was slower than it should have been. The whole visit was pretty well disastrous. If a venue like that, off the beaten track does not keep its website up to date, it does not deserve business.

When we were finally served......Sausages were off. Meat pie was off. Warm beef was off. In the end we settled for 2 oily baked potatoes with beans and a tuna bagette with a cremated bow and stern, delivered 10 minutes apart. To add insult to injury they tried to saddle us with a kings ransom of the full cost (£11) for sausages, baked potatoes and beans, minus the sausages. This oversight was swiftly corrected when pointed out. This place is the real McCoy, set in beautiful surroundings and steeped in history. It is wonderful inside and the staff were lovely. Its such a shame that the food was such a letdown, particularly so given that it was our first pub visit since early March 2020. Lovelystaff, good pub food and great atmosphere - we really love this place. 16 of us descended on them for a meal - as it turns out unexpectedly - on an October mid-week night, and they coped brilliantly. Truth is that our email saying we were coming had been missed, but despite initial suprise when we all arrived, the girls at the bar were immediately welcoming. Cannot praise this attitude highly enough. Food was good and plentiful.

Visited the pub in the middle of a circular walk around Middleham and had a lovely lunch and some good ale to wash it down. A very quaint old hostelry in the centre of town with open fires, dog friendly and a lovely rustic ambiance. Food was good quality and whilst not cheap it was nicely presented and service was excellent. Would definitely recommend to hikers and any visitors to the nearby castle.

We only called in for coffee whilst driving to Alnwick but I am glad we chose the Richard III Hotel. It is an interesting, old-fashioned pub with a distinct leaning towards the Sport of Kings as the rooms contain a lot of horse racing memorabilia. The welcome was friendly, even though we were only having coffee, and the service was quick and efficient. The coffee was good and, looking at the menu, there seemed to be a good choice of meals. Hopefully, next time, we will have more time and be able to try the cuisine.

We had 2 meals at this pub. Both were excellent. Home made steak pie was sublime. All food is cooked on the premises so you do have a little wait but it is worth it.

We visited the pub on the way to see Middleham Castle. Friendly atmosphere and great food. Portions are large and very moderately priced.

I just wanted a light supper, so ordered soup and bread - which turned out to be a flavoursome feast. Really taste, piping hot and clearly home made soup with a hot granary baguette - simple, but absolutely excellent.

Myself and three friends visited here for lunch having visited the nearby Forbidden Corner and were disappointed by both the service and the food.

We stopped in Middleham for lunch driving across North Yorkshire. Richard III pub is quaint loaded with pictures and horse racing memorabilia. We had a fantastic lunch from the varied menu, couple pints of cider. Staff were very friendly and informative. Highly recommend Richard III pub.

Stopped for lunch after walking round the castle. Good selection of draught beers. It's not a trendy pub, decorated with all kinds of horse racing prints and like a traditional old pub inside. The food was very good, we had two pies and my daughter had the ploughmans which was huge. I had the steak pie which was lean tender steak under a short crust pastry with big chips and peas.

We were stopping in the village for a few nights and were looking for some where for a meal out a couple of nights so we checked out this place. Good selection of ales but the bar dining area looked dirty with food remnants on the floor and loads of dogs wandering around. The cushions and throws on the seating were covered in dog hairs and looked dirty not a good sign. Dogs were allowed to wander behind the bar . Bar staff did not seem to know what was going on re prices of food on certain nights and i saw one couple over charged even though the prices were written on the walls.Even seen the cook from the kitchen come out to the bar and say it must be a good evening as he had not had many meals sent back. Not a place I would choose to eat in so we didn't.
