Restaurant Story in Southwark

It was my 60th birthday so we thought we’d celebrate in style at Restaurant Story. It started really well. We were warmly welcomed, and the food was lovely. Unfortunately our overall experience was let down by the very strange situation with the wine. Despite the sommelier talking to us as soon as we sat down, he did not explain the wine pairings to us, and then he disappeared and when the first course arrived he had still not taken our wine order. The other wait staff were great. They apologised and got it sorted out, but it was all very strange, and not what you expect from a Michelin starred restaurant.

I asked a table far from door. The answer was ok. I received the closest table to door. The music was very noisy. Cold inside. The food like from fast food. It was too late to go to KFC.

Simply one of the best dining experiences I have ever had. The food is incredible, the wine pairing is pure chemistry in action and the service is absolutely first class. We will be back.

Overall excellent! Great menu and great service! Pricey ! On par with 3 Michelin stars …! Have to improve the wine selections….. by the glass could be better perhaps ! Also we were running late last night because of the London traffic and no one picks the phone out of hours which is quite disappointing for a two Michelin star place !

Still a good restaurant but feels like it’s lost its sense of wonder. Dined here before the refurbishment and it was a wonderful experience with real personality. The second time the sense of identity and wonder was gone. The food is still very good but the experience feels more soulless and standardised than before. With the exception of 1-2 “Story Touches” this could have been any other 2 star restaurant.

Restaurant Story is a casually elegant venue, with a first class dining experience in comfortable surroundings, hosted by a friendly and informative team. They serve a surprise menu and we loved it all. The talented kichen team create incredibly good flavour combinations in every dish, with our sommelier delivering interesting and well suited wine and cocktail pairings. It was impossible to choose a favourite dish, they are all superb. Meticulous attention to detail, with alternative dishes provided to cater for allergies. Loved every moment! They have recently added a beautiful private dining room upstairs to accommodate up to 18 diners. The venue is conveniently close to London Bridge rail station.

The entire experience was a dream from start to finish. The waiters were friendly and attentive, the service was so fluid. Our Sommelier was informative, knowledgeable and not pretentious so we felt comfortable asking more questions about the wine. We were given a tour of the venue so got to thank the chefs for the delicious meal - the potato custard was a particular highlight. We also got to see their new private dining space and would highly recommend it - beautiful balcony for summer cocktails with a view of the Shard and large dining space with your own kitchen!

Mind blowing tastes with great presentation. Friendly and high quality staff. Once in a life time experience.

Smell of toilet at entrance. 3.5 hours before main course arrived. Overpriced and poorly paced. We were exhausted by the end.

Had a fantastic dining experience yesterday to celebrate my birthday with family and friends. The service was truly amazing. It strikes a nice balance between being professional and yet friendly. We all agreed it was our favourite tasting experience, nothing on the menu we didn’t all love. Such nice touches with the snacks and treats. Carolina the sommelier chose perfect wines for us. Would highly recommend.

Great restaurant and we loved it. The prices are a bit over the top for what you get but good for a special occasion.

An outstanding dining experience. Fantastic service. For those who are open-minded about what they eat, this is a joy and the surprise of each course adds to the experience. I shan’t describe individual dishes, for fear of spoiling it for others. Wine pairings were great and sensibly priced and portioned. The wine list offers plenty of choice for those who wish to choose for themself. A memorable evening.

Service was really outstanding and food/wine pairing was excellent however it was a bit off putting that they were already cleaning up the kitchen as we were about to finish our last course. We had seen other tables tour the kitchen and were hoping we’d have the same opportunity however half the staff was already leaving as we were finishing up. Our reservation was scheduled for 9pm and we actually received word that we could push our reservation ahead to 830pm. Good thing this was the case otherwise I’m not sure how they plan for the later seating. We were a bit disappointed by this and it unfortunately but a damper on the overall experience, hence not giving it full marks.

The hospitality and attention to detail to add to the experience was perfect. At a high level dining level it felt relaxed and pleasant to enjoy the food and ambience around you. The flavour profiles and risks taken on certain dishes were perfect and well worth it. I requested Madeline’s as a long shot for a special occasion, and they came through in flying colours. Blew her socks off and nearly cried at the extra thought of that dessert. Perfect experience, value for money is right there.

Restaurant Story is a favorite restaurant that we visit each time we come to London. Tom Sellers who founded Story and executive chef Tom Phillips and his staff run a perfectly coordinated service. The food of this tasting menu is impeccable, with complex, beautiful flavors that work together for an extraordinary experience. Paired wine adds to this and the sommelier explains every wine and how it pairs with the food. The wines are specially selected and are, in many cases, exclusive to Story. The dining space is very inviting and comfortable. No wonder this restaurant was awarded a Michelin Star shortly after it opened.

Fantastic evening at Story. This is an all tasting menu restaurant and they don’t give you a menu but each dish is fantastically presented to you by one of the many fabulous members of staff. They do ask you for any allergies or dislikes beforehand, so if there is something you really don’t like they will accommodate you. Every course was a culinary masterpiece and I cannot fault anything. The wine pairing and the sommelier just added to the whole experience. Yes this is pricy, but they have 2 very well deserved Michelin stars and it is absolutely worth pushing the boat out or going for a special occasion.

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Restaurant Story, and it was indeed more than just a dinner—it was an unforgettable experience. The menu featured exquisite dishes like Crudo, Frog Legs, Cod, Toasted Squab Pigeon, and the delightful Champagne Baba. Outstanding lunch and service. Food was thoughtfully served by friendly young team.

A wonderful mix of the innovative and the classical. Particular highlights include Halibut and Plum Crudo, Sweetcorn Textures, Butter Poached Cod and of course the Paddington Bear. Well worth a visit.

Last Friday was our second visit at ⭐️⭐️Michelin @rest_story and by far this is THE BEST restaurant we have ever been to…..the food created by Tom Sellers and his team is perfect in every way…..delicious, creative and fun. Each course is so carefully crafted by this team of incredibly talented chefs, it’s a shame to eat, but when you do your tastebuds explode with amazing flavours and textures. The front of house team looked after us so well and made us feel so special. Nothing was too much trouble and they went out of their way to make sure we had an incredible evening. We had special letters to celebrate my husband’s birthday and my OU module results, we got a menu signed by the chefs and even got a photo with them. I have dined at a lot of fine dining restaurants all over London (including Heston Blumenthal and Gordon Ramsey restaurants, which are also incredible), however, I can confidently say that this is the best restaurant experience I have ever had. The service was incredible, the staff were so knowledgeable about the food and all of the drinks, the hospitality was second to none, the dining environment created was incredible. I cannot recommend this restaurant enough. It is on the pricey side, but the 9 course taster menu is definitely worth the money. I took my partner there for her birthday (20/07/24) and she absolutely loved it. They really took care of us and made her feel very special. We will definitely be going back again.

By some considerable distance the best dining experience I’ve ever had.

My absolute favorite restaurant in London, and #2 of all the Michelin star places (about 9-12) we went to in Europe over the last 3 summer Holiday’s. The food is wonderful but what I love most is they are more casual. You don’t need a suit to eat a fine meal. The music, the vibes, the creativity, and the service have been spot on both visit’s.

My husband and I visited Restaurant Story as a celebration of our 40th wedding anniversary. It was exquisite from start to finish. The food was fantastic, lots of 'Wow' moments, and we thoroughly enjoyed the surprise menu. What made it incredibly special was the staff. I don't think we've ever been served by such a great bunch of people. They were all genuinely nice, friendly, efficient, funny, warm, and went out of their way to make the experience fun and memorable. Thank you.

It was very expensive and the dishes were not great at all. The main dish consisted of a tiny piece of lamb. The amount was less than half of the meat in a MacDonald burger. Moreover, wines were overpriced. Anyway, I don’t think it deserves a Michelin star.

Absolutely outstanding experience! We were celebrating a retirement and anniversary and they went the extra mile with the service to provide a really special evening for our family. The food was obviously amazing and it was a lovely setting (we were upstairs in a private table). Worth the price tag!

Firstly, the decor and atmosphere of the restaurant was overall very good - welcoming and decorative. We had a pleasant greeting from the staff who were extremely friendly. This level of service was maintained throughout the experience, from our table napkins being folded as we ventured to the restroom and the informative descriptions of each dish. It must be noted that every interaction with the staff was outstanding. However, where this dining experience lacked for my family and I was unfortunately the food. To start, each dish was well presented and clearly a lot of techniques had gone into the preparation. Although, for the price that was paid, only 2 out of the 9 dishes really stood out in terms of flavour and texture; this was the mushroom pasta dish, and the strawberry themed dessert. To be completely honest the rest of the food was extremely underwhelming, considering the restaurant has 2 Michelin stars and with that a large price tag. Overall, I would not recommend this restaurant, as although the service and atmosphere was great. The food, which in my opinion should be the highlight, simply didn’t pack a punch with flavour, and was disappointing to say the least.

Absolutely spectacular. The food and service was 10/10.

For a 2 Michelin star restaurant I expected more. Whilst the staff were very lovely and knowledgeable, it felt like there were too many people constantly rushing around. It was quite distracting and felt a bit chaotic and disorganised. There was also a bit of a horrible smell coming up from the toilets downstairs which wasn't pleasant. The food was mostly excellent, however the half time orange was so bitter I couldn't eat more than a bite and the citrus dessert was so overpowering it reminded me of toilet cleaner. Again I couldn't finish it. The wines were incredible and the sommeliers were fantastic. Overall although it was a lovely evening, I wouldn't go back. At that price point, I expected a little more from some of the dishes and atmosphere.

Story is a fabulous dining experience think food staff was perfect.

This is a must eat restaurant. Unbelievable floor staff - in particular a wonderful energetic Australian lady who was great fun and enhanced our experience. Also an Italian gentleman who was knowledgeable and entertaining. The Sommelier was brilliant and we agreed on a Serbian Pinot - what a find. The other two floor staff who helped us were also superb. He had come from Swansea Then the food - Chef Tom Phillips was outstanding - another example of a really top draw Welsh chef. From start to finish - what an experience. Each course was an adventure to take your palate to another level. The Tarragon sauce was out of this world !!!! They have recently opened following a refurbishment and certainly the upstairs was well worth the wait. Overall- expensive - yes BUT you pay for what you get and the experience from start to finish justifies the price and it cannot be recommended highly enough. Thanks to everyone at Story for making this an unforgettable evening. Congratulations to Chef Phillips and the team . Diolch yn fawr iawn

Our experience at Restaurant Story surpassed all expectations. The food was exceptional, but what truly stood out was the impeccable service and the friendly, genuine staff. We laughed our way through the night, enjoying every moment.I must give special thanks to Paola (?), our host, who graciously accommodated our late arrival - she was absolutely brilliant. An excellent experience. Much attention to detail and excellent food selection. I’d recommend really listening to the question ‘do you have any preference?’, as that will likely influence your enjoyment. Your preferred temperature of red meat is a factor, for example. Overall, having some experience in fine dining will be a plus, but not strictly necessary. If you’re looking for a bargain, this is likely not the place for you. Price is steep, but worth it for the serious foodie. Remember to have fun and enjoy this unique experience. Cheers to the staff, especially Ollie. I definitely would return at the first opportunity.

This was a special birthday occasion. The ultimate price dictates that one can only visit on special occasions. A bill of £800 for 2 when 1 person wasn't drinking is Michelin 2 star expensive.But the food was out of this world from a simple(not) cup of lobster broth with intricate burnt lemon flavours to frivolous half time oranges ,a stunning turbot & even better duck dish to myriad extras . My indulgent matching wine selection was equally stunning. Immaculate service added to the occasion.

What a disappointment ! We’d been longing to have a meal at Story and were looking forward to the place´s long awaited and delayed reopening. It looks now so old fashioned and, unfortunately, in the worst way. In the London still innovative gastronomic scene, the food tastes out of its time and concerns - not being a vegetarian, far from it, I really lacked a greener touch, like vegetable is a bad word here. It’s all greasy and fat, from the first oyster snack. In French, we have an expression that says « le goût des autres » (other people’s taste). That’s exactly how and what we felt during our time at Story, which didn’t tell us any tale about food or cooking. Service, however, was friendly in the best of ways. Congratulations for retaining the two Michelin stars while closed. Good luck for keeping them now !

We were delighted to see Restaurant Story re-open and jumped at the opportunity to book lunch. The wait was worth it, as this meal was spectacular! The memories evoked by the dishes, especially the beef dripping candle, combined with the music made it a memorable day. I think we've run out of superlatives to describe how amazing both the food and the staff were - we can't wait to get back!

Amazing food and great service . A relaxed evening indulging in lovely food. Music was a bit loud sometimes.

The food at Restaurant Story is always amazing, no question. It's a culinary journey worth taking, though this time two deep fried items on the menu were disappointing. They were too greasy and the taste of frying oil in the batter overpowered the food itself. We were also somewhat let down by service. It seemed less coordinated than at previous times, when it was super precise and almost theatrical. Our sommelier called each of the wines he suggested "fun" without giving much other information about the actual taste profiles. After we chose our bottle, we had to ask to have our glasses refilled every single time throughout the evening. Finally, we felt positively pestered at the end of the meal when asked some five or six times in very close succession if we'd like to order coffee or anything else, when we had said we'd like to finish our wine first. It made the impression they wanted us out, when that wasn't actually the case (we asked, it was all good, but altogether strange). Everyone can have an off night, it's all good, and we'd still be back of course. But the night did feel less special as a result. It wasn't the perfection all round we've come to expect here.

The staff were excellent in spite of having some difficult customers arrive with too many people at the same time it was a fun and energetic valentines day meal. The food especially the pumpkin agnolotti and opening deep fried oyster was fantastic. For a special meal this was truly fantastic.

Incredible evening, lots of new dishes and everything was inventive but also delicious - not faddy. Loved the classic wine pairing which also included cocktails and sake. Great service and all round a fantastic experience.

A relaxed refined dining experience and welcoming staff made my husband's birthday feel special without the stuffiness which usually accompanies these establishments. What a lunch! Beautifully decorated restaurant near london Bridge. Firstly the staff, all very friendly and attentive without being too attentive! Very knowledgeable Sommeliers and always a plus point when they pour the wine at the table. You aren’t given a menu beforehand but the restaurant is aware of any dietary restrictions. We started with the most delicious snacks, highlight being the rabbit sandwich. After a few courses of snacks we started on the meal with perfectly matching wines. The head chef served us a few of the courses as he added extras ie truffle and caviar to a couple of the dishes. Every course was beautifully presented and cooked to perfection. The duck main was the star of the meal. As we wound down to the palate cleanser and finally the dessert followed by treats it came to an end of a perfect meal! At the end we were given a copy of the menu and wines to take home. I think we were there nearly four hours!

Undoubtedly the best dinner / experience we’ve ever had! The food was incredible, and we had the upgraded fine wines drink pairing which was the best pairings we’ve had with a tasting menu! The staff were so passionate and engaged with ‘the story’ that it was infectious and each course was anticipated with absolute excitement! So glad this place is back and the refurbishment looks incredible upstairs and down! Will be going back again soon!

Creative, bold, unique, interesting, delicious! The dishes were highly sophisticated and it was evident that plenty of thought had gone into their development. The 'rabbit sandwich' canapé was lovely; a perfect balance of sweetness and saltiness - a delicious meaty start to the meal. The chicken and oyster dish was great. Whilst it wasn't the most visually appealing of dishes, it was absolutely packed full of flavour and was a gorgeous, warm dish to have had on a cold January night. The cod with beurre blanc was sensational - one of my stand-out fish dishes. The fish was cooked well and it was delicious in every sense. The herb and fruit gels on the side added the appropriate amount of sweetness and acidity, which broke through the richness of the fish and beurre blanc, meaning you had a dish that was balanced and refined. Whilst I could see this dish was based on a French classic, I could clearly tell it was unique to the restaurant. On the whole, an excellent meal. The petit-fours were generous. Whilst some dishes could have offered more creativity, the taste was generally first-rate. The dishes here are highly original and the presentations are some of the coolest around - I doubt you'll find any other restaurant using a bowl made to look like a snail shell and serving an edible candle made from beef fat (this was a messy dish but pretty good!) At a price point of £225 per person, it is slightly overpriced in my opinion, especially when considering the prices at other 2 and 3 Michelin star restaurants. However, I would be content to return.
