Somehow they have managed to serve up a fantastic fish pie , right size portion , terrific flavour , just enough mash on top and with egg which I think essential. Hope it wasnt the last of the line !

We came here for a birthday meal with family and were sadly disappointed. Most of us ordered the Sunday roast which was average, meat very fatty unfortunately and the veg was a bit bland. We also ordered a kids meal pizza and the dough was hardly cooked. The deserts were very underwhelming given they were £7.50+. Cheesecake was sloppy and didn't come with anything other than a drizzle of compote, I asked for ice cream. The other deserts looked small and bland and not presented very well although tasted better. The service by the staff was second to none, all were friendly, polite and attentive which was good. The venue was also very pleasant although at one point we were the only table in the resturant so the atmosphere was lacking. It's a shame as it has so much potential and the food wasn't awful but could be better.

From the minute we walked through the doors we knew we were going to like it at The Swan. We got a warm welcome, and were shown straight to our Room - number 5. As it was our 45th Wedding Anniversary we had ordered a bottle of Champagne, which was chilling in our room upon arrival as requested. We were also given some fruit dipped in chocolate on a platter which had Happy Anniversary written on it (also in chocolate) - it was a lovely touch. The decor throughout the Swan is lovely, every part of it is spotlessly clean. The Bed in our room was so comfy, lovely pillows too. We had a lovely walk in shower in the bathroom, there were also small complimentary bottles of Bodywash, Shampoo, Conditioner and a bar of Soap. Our towels were changed as and when needed, but our bed was made, and coffee/tea/milk/snacks replenished daily (we loved the Crisps!) Our room was at the front of the Hotel, there was traffic noise as it’s on the High Street but it didn’t really bother us, the church bells chiming was lovely to hear too. We would definitely choose that room again. Not a lot of parking spaces at the rear but we always managed to get one. The menu choices at both Breakfast and Dinner were ample. The Cheese, Potato and Red Onion Pie with Roasted Beetroot and Kale was phenomenal, but everything we ate was just as delicious and was cooked and served piping hot. We did have lunch one day during our stay and there was plenty of choice on that menu too. The staff were polite and attentive, they are a credit to the establishment. Can’t wait to stay again 🙂

Bar was good and there are great alternatives in this nice English village.

It was top service as usual when I visited for a lovely chicken meal at the weekend, completely with a curry sauce of my exact liking from the menu, scrumptious fried onion rings fried in batter chosen from a range of mouth- watering selections but personally the best choice for me and very tasty fries which didn't overwhelm, the flavour of the Chicken cooked with herbs really stood out, staff always friendly and welcoming, so I thank them for giving me the chance to add further positive reviews to my list!

Been to the Swan before, a few years ago. In the area we thought we would visit again. The place was spotless, the staff are lovely, attentive and helpful. Although the restaurant was very quiet. We ordered our drinks, food, and were looking forward to the "Swan" experience, like we had on our previous visit. The food did not disappoint. However, there was a service charge added to the bill, which we did not notice until we arrived home. And we had already tipped the waitress ourselves. I think the Swan should make it clear that they add a service charge to your bill, as I have eaten at a lot of restaurants in the past two years, ancestors never had a service charge added to the bill. Surely, if you have good service, you want to tip the server, but having it forced on you, without your knowledge, is not good. We always tip, and prefer to do that. I have given 3 stars because of this. You say it's an service charge, is an extra payment for the staff, however, surely it's not up to the customers, who are already paying inflated costs for the meal, to then provide extra funds for your staff! We will go elsewhere next time, to avoid paying a hidden service charge, and tip accordingly. I am afraid, this visit will be our last visit.

Sunday dinner for 4. We went to The Swan as the place we had booked nearby turned out to be dog tolerant as opposed to dog friendly. Wish we’d booked the Swan in the first place. Great table, nice atmos, warm welcome and friendly attentive service from everyone with treats for our dog. Best roast dinners (lamb and nut roast) that we’ve had in ages. Generous portions and delicious with yorkie, lots of lovely veg, cauliflower cheese and red cabbage … and importantly lots of rich gravy. Really enjoyed it we’ll definitely be back.

Not only is the menu good but the service has taken a turn for the better - we were really happy as reviews had not been good over the last few months. Similar to being in metal but not only used for food holding only On what we had there is definitely room for improvement Spoke to staff regarding who listened and said it would be passed on

Very disappointed with the afternoon tea. We had three finger sandwiches each on a plate, not on a tiered afternoon tea plate. Two very small chocolate slices, two cherry scones with cream and jam, we were expecting plain or fruit scones, I don’t like cherry scones, so did not enjoy this and four shortbread rounds. We felt the shortbread was a cop out, as there were no savoury or fruit tarts.

Really enjoyed catching up with a friend and eating here. Dropped in early on a Saturday and managed to get a table. Korean beef spring roll was a great starter. Lip smacking good. Sea bass main was excellent if a little light on carbs. However my friend ordered the fisherman’s basket which was a mound of fish & chips. Shared some of that which was excellent. Service good all the way through. Great meal.

We chose to eat here as we heard it was dog friendly and we have a rather excitable 7 month old golden retriever puppy. The staff were fantastic from the moment we arrived - they gave us the table closest to the door (this was perfect as we were a bit worried about walking him past other people) and they offered him water and dog treats. They were great with us too with quick service and were always friendly and helpful. Just returned from ‘The Swan’ and would highly recommend it. The dining room was beautifully furnished, and we were given a very nicely decorated table in the window. Service was very good too, the staff were friendly, and attentive. No problem when we asked for more gravy. Already planning to return.

Booked at 545 on a Saturday night for my Daughter and I. Busy night and good atmosphere. The manager was very polite and showed us to our table. Service was pretty slow however completely expected on a Saturday night. My daughter ordered the 3 nibbles for £20 and I ordered the main course of mussels and fries which we were both going to share as a meal. The food came out and the mussels were in a small bowl, about 8-10 mussels in total. I told the waitress there had been a mistake as I had ordered the main portion. She took them away then brought them back saying the chef says that is a main portion! 10 mussels for £16!! I asked for the manager who again went to the kitchen only to come back with the same answer. Now either the chef is extremely inexperienced in costing menus or he genuinely feels that this constitutes as a main meal! Either way I sent them back and asked for them to be taken off the bill. My daughter and I ate the rest of the meal which was very Underwhelming then went home and had a proper meal! To add insult to injury I was also presented with a bill which included service charge! Won't be returning.

We have known The Swan for a long time, as we live locally. We went for Dinner, what has happened?! It has gone very downhill in terms of service, value for money and quality of food. There seems to be no system in place, the staff don’t appear to have had any training. We had 30-40 min wait between starter and main course. Very overcooked duck. 15 min wait for a glass of wine. Slow and not worth the money, won’t be going again.

This place ticked all the boxes from the moment we walked in. A friendly welcome, help carrying our bags to our room. And what a room: we went for the upgrade and it was delightful. The standard rooms, on inspection, seemed basic by comparison. Sadly, things went downhill after that. There seems to be a problem when it comes to getting food served in a timely manner, both in the evening and at breakfast. Breakfast was chaotic on our second morning. It’s a nice place and I’d recommend (but with some hesitation).

Three of us came for a Sunday Lunch after a 50km cycle ride so we were quite hungry. We came to the Swan by chance, knowing nothing about the pub and not having read any reviews. Our experience was very positive. Both the Sunday roasts were excellent, and the vegetarian Sunday roast was particularly good. The fish and chips were good too. In addition we found the staff very friendly, very attentive and very professional. We were lucky in that at 2.00pm the place was not busy at all so there were plenty of tables to choose where to sit and we didn't have to wait long for our food. Basd on our experience I'd definitely go again.

I booked an overnight stay at this hotel as we were visiting friends in the area. First impressions were good. We were shown to our room (5) which on the surface looked nice. However, the noise from the main, busy road was unbearable, so we closed the windows. This was on the 14th June when it was sweltering outside. We didn’t get a wink of sleep as there were no fans/air conditioning in the room and it was like an oven. As I was getting ready I noticed marks on the wall. I took a closer look and it was splatters of tea/coffee up the wall. There was also brown stains dotted over the carpet. Then I noticed the thick dust on all the skirting and dado rails, of which I have photos. This was both in the room and bathroom. I sent an email to The Swan the next day and a woman called Sue said she would pass my complaint would be passed to the Manager Wes. It is now the 3rd July and I have heard nothing back, even though I have sent a further two emails. Very bad customer service from The Swan.

We've been customers of The Swan for over 14 years and as soon as restrictions were lifted it was our first choice! It's a homely yet classical English country pub with oodles of history, great food, great beer, an excellent wine list and a warm and welcoming reception. It was our 3 year wedding anniversary and we ordered a few nibbles, a couple of starters and shared a main of their famous Buttermilk fried chicken!! Oh my days, get involved. It's how chicken should be eaten all the time. Delicious. We had large glasses or wine, pints of great beer and two complimentary glasses of fizz as it was our anniversary, a welcome and unexpected treat! Don't take my word for it. Go, book a table, meet the staff, enjoy food and tell me am wrong. Trust me, you'll be back! They are a hotel but we live too close to justify staying over but I've heard the rooms are just as good as the rest of the establishment.

Upon arrival, we weren’t sure if we had booked breakfast - instead of telling us we hadn’t booked breakfast, the staff proceeded to tell us when breakfast is and where to go.When we arrived for breakfast they told us we hadn’t booked breakfast- it would have been more helpful for them to have told us on arrival rather than after we had ordered. The breakfast wasn’t expensive but it showed in the quality. The hash browns were greasy, the scrambled eggs were hardly cooked and the sausage was very cheap quality. Another member of our party ordered the pancakes which were hard and couldn’t be cut with a knife. The rooms were nicely decorated but had a lack or mirrors on the desks to do hair/make-up.The toilet seat in one of our rooms wasn’t fixed to the toilet and the shower didn’t work properly - at first it wouldn’t turn on, once it did turn on the water that came out was scolding hot. If a young child was in the shower it could have caused some bad burns. When we told the staff this, all was said is ‘we will have to look at it’. We were offered no apology or compensation for the fact we couldn’t use half of the facilities in our bathroom.Overall, not a great first experience.

Breakfast food is decent but a good hotel shouldn't be handing out sachets of ketchup. It's almost impossible to open them without getting your hands dirty. Unless they want to pitch themselves alongside McDonald's, they really should think about providing bottles of ketchup. The single block of butter (again a sachet) wasn't up to much either as it wasn't enough to cover the bread.

This used to be the centre of the village. I used to recommend it to friends and colleagues for meals and overnight stays. It was the place to be and to be seen. But in recent times it has just fallen off a cliff. The food is poor, the service is non-existent and the place is simply grubby. I get that these are hard times for publicans but a smile wouldn’t break the bank and it might just assist in the foundation of a little atmosphere. As if the bedrooms and the public spaces were not a bad enough advert. It is now the talk of the village that the next to the bottom hygiene rated pub (The Swan rated 4) has pulled of a coupe by poaching (cookery joke!) the chef of the lowest rated pub in the village (The Piste rated 3). Well done, that’s gonna bring ‘em flocking. Looks like this is a race to the bottom and The Swan has come out the winner.PLEASE PLEASE BOOK YOUR GAME UP. Bring back the old staff, the old atmosphere, the old menu – and for god sake bring back the fish and chips. There in a sentence is the perfect recipe for a great pub. The Swan has stiff competition in a village with so many almost perfect adversaries. As a once loyal local anyone with eyes to see must reason that it’s not the place it was. And without an injection of personality, atmosphere, improved menu, better management and a mop, it’s on the brink of collapse. This Swan needs the Vet urgently!

I must say, last time I visited the swan was a few years ago and the food seems to have slipped in quality since then. Service was ok, although none of the staff looked as though they wanted to be there. Drinks well priced though which is what you want from a pub.

Really lovely pub. We stayed for some drinks before and after our meal. The wine and designer lagers were expensive. But they also had some reasonable drinks offers on.

Stayed at the swan while visiting relatives over Christmas and enjoyed our stay albeit with some caveats. Firstly the good points: excellent breakfast, good pub food and pleasant hosts, no complaints in these areas. Now the not so good: our room was up several flights of stairs which may not be an issue if you are training for a decathlon, but for mere mortals with a heavy suitcase it was quite a slog. The room itself was small with a bathroom cleverly designed to injure and maim via many sharp edges. Not the end of the world, but be aware when booking. All this having been said, would stay again but would request a different room.

Having seen the ratings and reviews for The Swan, we arrived full of hope and expectation. The gentleman who greeted us initially was very freindly and helpful. He also served us later, when we had supper in the restaurant, and we could see that he was working very hard, doing his best for everyone. However, other staff were clearly not of the same calibre. We had to wait a long time before the bar staff even asked us what we wanted. One of them walked past us on several occasions without even acknowledging us. Breakfast was the same story. We were told to help ourselves to juice, but there were no glasses, and it was some time before any were brought. The menu was confusing, too. You had to order everything, and then they came back and said that they had run out of some things the night before. It took ages for our breakfasts to arrive, and the people at the table next to us made various comments about having to wait for the hen to lay an egg. Our coffee did arrive, but nobody asked if we would like a re-fill. Our room was nicely furnished, warm and fairly quiet. On arrival, we found that there was virtually no toilet paper left, and no spare roll either. There was a used cake of hotel soap left in the shower, and when we went to make a warm drink, we found that the tea-pot was full of somebody else's cold tea.

4 of us went to eat last Sunday evening. At 7pm, they'd run out of all 3 of their Sunday roast options, and the remaining menu was limited, to say the least.I plumped for steak and kidney suet pudding. It was OK, but the pastry was way to thick, and the kidney was in huge chunks, and there was too much of it, to the detriment of the steak.Service was not good, especially considering how few others were dining. There appeared to be 1 bar person (obviously new, and out of her depth working alone), 1 waiter, and a 'manager', who obviously considered it beneath her to serve us some drinks, even though we'd been waiting some time.In all, a disappointing experience, sadly, because we all live (very) locally, and something big will need to happen before I bother again. It almost felt as if our visit, and request for food and drinks was putting them out.....

Have been coming here for over 20 years (I got married here) and whilst the refurbishment looks good I have to say it has lost some of it's old world charm. Having said that the food was delicious and my daughter, a seafood aficionado, loved the mussel starter and trout main. The service from Beckie, who took time to choose a wine for me with samples, was excellent.

I booked a twin deluxe room at £135 b/b for two nights. I phoned the day before to confirm we were coming and it was a twin. We got there and were shown to a ground floor double. We had to wait whilst the manager sorted the beds out. We didn't mind that it was a long journey. The room is not shown on the website as it's a converted outbuilding, low ceiling, dark grey walls, small TV. When we moved in we discovered the bathroom was half finished. The door didn't fit and wouldn't close never mind lock. The new door to the laundry hadn't been painted. The ceiling had patches of new paint on it ready for a final coat. The skirting was a gash diy job. Straight edges with the corners filled with putty or chewing gum! The shower was 20 years old and very stiff to turn on.My husband couldn't face moving as we were only there for two nights. I was baffled why they would put anyone in a room with such a shabby bathroom. It's a shame there isn't a Premier Inn in the area it would be much better value. The food was fine, but we won't be going back. It spoiled what should have been a lovely weekend.

My wife & I were visiting Tarporley for the first time and looking for somwhere to eat. We came across The Swan, an inposing building on the High Street, and weren't disappointed by either the food or the service - special mention to the manager,Tommy, and our waitress, Sue, who looked after us really well and took the time to answer our queries about a couple of the dishes.

Why do hostelries feel that they can achieve success by spending huge amounts of money on property without any consideration to quality of management or service?

The Swan is a fantastic and historic old coaching inn at the heart of Tarporley's Georgian High Street. Over recent years it has been somewhat neglected, so I had hoped this would be the opportunity create something really special.

The last time I did a review of the Swan I had nothing but praise for the food and the ambiance and it has become a well-loved and oft-visited meeting place.

Wife & I, feeling peckish but not desperate to eat, perused the menu whilst having a drink. Loved the description of many of the dishes and, after some deliberation and a few beers, we decided to to eat. Well, we were not disappointed, on the contrary; the Oxtail casserole was fabulous and the Baked Cod also exceeded expectations.

Our first visit to the refurbished Swan at Tarporley. A fantastic atmosphere, great service and amazing food. Food from the coal fired Josper grill was delicious. The Josper fired cod with red wine and smoked bacon sauce was especially good. For dessert The Swans Chester Pudding was a light and tangy finish to the evening. Would thoroughly recommend a visit. The Swan also has rooms which I would imagine to be a fantastic place to stay.

Booked directly by 'phone (I usually do) as I queried as to why the (midweek) Bed & Breakfast rate was such good value. Tim reassured me that everything was as the website suggested. We were met by Neal who proved to be an affable and attentive host and helped us to one of the stable block rooms. It retained character, was comfortable, clean and had plenty of storage space, no skimping on wardrobe hangers etc. Nice touches on the courtesy tray. Bottled water, quality teas and a jar of ground coffee for the cafetiere. Fresh milk was available on request. They even provided ear plugs for light sleepers who may have been disturbed by the quarterly chiming of the nearby church. I just overslept because the bed was so comfortable! Breakfast was amazing. A good menu selection that was cooked to order...and very generous. The set menu and daily selection was imaginative that we decided to have our evening meal there for both nights that we stayed. Not only tasty but nicely presented and efficiently served by wonderful attentive staff. They all had good customer service skills. Linen serviettes were the 'norm'. It would have to be a mean spirited person to find fault with food, service and room, especially at the rate that they offered. We were happy to spend on food and bar...which offered quality beverages. The fact that it was very popular with local groups proved that the Swan was everything it claimed to be.

We have been here before but not for a while, it was busy when we went in as the hunt had their last meet meal there. We loved this, they all looked so smart and we’re friendly and welcoming. Growing up in the countryside it’s a normal thing to see.

We stayed overnight at this establishment and decided to have our dinner here. The staff were wonderful so friendly and efficient. The service was superb and the food was to die for. I had halibut, cooked to perfection, and my husband had fish and chips, very lightly battered and with beautiful white fish.

We had booked a table for a 40th birthday. We sat outside. The table had been set beautifully. The afternoon tea itself was delightful. Beautiful fresh sandwiches, with scones and assorted mini cakes. The prossecco was fab too.

It's called a takeaway and service and disposable cups, food trays etc are all disposable - stand around whilst numbers are shouted out AKA McDonald's until your drinks are ready. Also, no food offerings visible for intolarances or Coeliacs, just for lifestyle choices - a large sign warns about lots of allergies, so be grateful for a drink I guess.... You get to sit in quite pleasant surroundings... Disposing/recycling every cup/food box that's used is not very sustainable.
