This was the warm and friendly moment, and we were charmed - by the atmosphere, the staff, and the honesty of the welcome we received. We stayed on … and will stay again, longer, soon. Not mod, thank God. Great ale, by the way, and lovely cider.

Cannot fault this restaurant. Hot food, when presented and good value. The fish and chips on a Friday night are very good and a fair price. There was a large group of us for two nights and we were well fed. The food came out quickly and enabled us all to eat together.

I stayed locally and ate at The Red Lion twice. On each occasion the food was excellent! I tried the Sunday roast which was cooked to perfection and piping hot. Great selection of fresh vegetables, baby carrots, courgettes and cauliflower etc. My next meal was a beautiful homemade scotch egg with fresh salad and then I had poached salmon with new potatoes. I couldn’t resist the pavlova with fresh summer fruits and of course apple pie and custard. Paul the chef is a great asset to this restaurant and I will definitely eat there again on my next trip!

We’d spotted the sign outside advertising fish and chips to eat in or take away every Friday between 6.00pm and 9:00pm. Being the last night of our week long stay nearby we thought it would be nice not to have to cook something. We arrived at 6:00pm and ordered a couple of drinks. We spotted on the board by the bar that the fish and chips were £6 per person, they came with a wedge of lemon and tartare sauce. If you wanted either garden or mushy peas it was a £1 extra. This seemed a bit steep for a portion of peas, but we were very hungry so ordered a serving of mushy peas each. No complaints about the service, the food arrived very quickly, but then again it doesn’t take long to cook child size portions !! The piece of fish was in batter that was far from crispy, it was just a pale beige colour. The fish itself was no bigger than the palm of my hand, that is the palm with no fingers. There were no more than a dozen chips, and the portion of peas I’d say was around a tablespoon in size. Although hot, the fish still had its skin on, it was also grey to translucent in colour. Not white flakes as you’d expect. No bread, or buttered roll, but a huge ramekin of tartare sauce each that would have served 4 or 5 people. Maybe the tartare sauce was supposed to fill us up, well it didn’t. We left feeling robbed of £14, walked the half mile or so back to our holiday cottage, where upon arrival I set about cooking a meal. Big disappointment.

We wanted to stop for lunch near to Hay thinking at festival time we wouldn’t find many options for space there and saw the red lion so stopped on impulse. Small but good range of ales and the pub quickly filled up with locals and visitors. Good value roast at £11.50 with two large slices of meat carved for you from a choice of three joints, Yorkshire pud, then help yourself roasts and four veg. Home made puds to follow and friendly service

Four of us came here recently for an evening meal, we were surprised how busy the pub was and we were told that the restaurant wasn't open until 7 pm, not a problem as it was not too long to wait. We ordered our drinks and studied the menu before entering the dining room, very nice and traditional. The meals were OK but in our opinion a bit pricey for what you got, but that's country pubs nowadays I guess. Listening to some of the conversation taking place in the bar, I would hazard a guess that some hotel guests come here for either the fishing on the river or country walking with the pub as a base. An enjoyable experience, worth a visit.

We stayed here during the Hay Festival. There seems to be something on the menu which will suit all tastes. My friend and I opted for the chef dishes, but there is the option to have the more traditional dishes such as gammon, steak, fish and chips etc. Both of our meals were fresh, tasty and served hot. The pie was possibly one of the best pies I have tasted in a long time. There's the choice to eat in the bar rather than the restaurant which is nice as you don't feel obliged to dress up for dinner!

I stayed here last month. The food was great. Nice varied menu to choose from, warm plates and very tasty. I would definitely recommend trying one of the chefs creations rather than the stuff you get in most other pubs. A pint of locally brewed of butty bach was the perfect accompaniment!

My partner and I ate here when we stayed at the hotel and the food was AMAZING! Let me start with breakfast. OMG what a fabulous fry up, so so tasty and cooked to perfection. A perfect start to our days which meant we had no need for lunch when we were out and about. We ate dinner both nights at The Red Lion. The menu is a balanced mix of traditional pub grub and a selection of some of the chefs own creativeness. We opted for the chefs dishes, as let's face it fish and chips, gammon etc are pretty much standard everywhere you go, and we're so glad we did as the meals were delicious. Obviously prepared with much thought and fabulous attention to detail. Ok so we had to wait a little longer than perhaps if we'd ordered the bog standard pub grub but the menu tells you there may be a wait so we just had an extra drink from the very hospitable landlord and soaked up the traditional country inn atmosphere.

We were camping up the road in the Bycross campsite, but decided against cooking and ended up here at the Red Lion. While waiting for our food, we overheard a regular tell the lady behind the bar that the wall mounted ashtray outside had blue tits nesting in it! They lady then went off and made up a laminated sign asking smokers not to use the ashtray and why. How sweet. We both went for the chicken and brie pie. An odd combination it turned out, but it had chips, which is what we both really wanted. That said, we did eat the pie and it warmed the cockles of our hearts. The main bar was almost empty apart from a local and the lady behind the bar. We had a brief chat as we left. I enthusiastically explained that we had been canoeing down the river. Met with a quiet enough reaction, we then left. My partner explained as it was a big fishing pub, mentioning you are a canoeist is not advised as a friend of his had done this in the past and was told that canoeists were not welcome. Truth be told were made very welcome. I would definitely return to The Red Lion Hotel if am back in the area.

I visited The Red Lion Hotel meeting up with fellow traditional anglers from all over the UK. We stayed for two nights and if I had the chance I'd stay for much longer. The service from the staff was excellent - there when you need them. I expected the food to be typical pub grub, I couldn't have been farther from the truth. Without question the food is outstanding. When you order your food you have to wait, and think to your self my meal's taking a while, but when it arrives you will understand why. The chef prepares your food for you as if you were the only one there, non of this preprepared food left under hot lamps or warmed in a microwave. Many of us had the full English for breakfast, everything cooked just right. The eggs are very fresh, being a chicken keeper I could vouch that they were probably laid the same morning, so hours old. Nothing was too much trouble. If you don't want to wait a little longer than usual for superb freshly prepared food then you probably don't appreciate it. A real hidden gem. Well worth a visit. JS

We came here for lunch on a weekday. We didn't know what to expect as the website didn't give a sample menu, but what a surprise! At lunchtime there are sandwiches, warm baguettes all with a good selection of fillings. Also available was the full menu of starters, mains and deserts, PLUS several specials! So, problem, what to choose! The specials were priced to sell so we went for those. They came in very reasonable time and were very very good, well flavoured and cooked. Very friendly welcome by the barman. Its so hard to score, yes the decour is quite old, it would be easy to be put off, but the food and friendliness more than makes up for it and is definitely worth going to for it, especially if you are in the area and don't want to go as far as Hay. Bredwardine is a lovely village too, lots of footpaths and nice church.

We popped in here on a canoe trip down the Wye. The pub is a short walk up the road, and has a garden at the back with some tables with umbrellas. There were a couple of real ales on tap, which were served by a barman who was polite enough but not exactly welcoming. We cleared our own table of dirty crockery since they were clearly quite busy (for such a small place). There was quite a wait for food, but we were warned of this before ordering. We enjoyed the garden whilst waiting, and had it to ourselves when the food arrived around 45 mins later. The food was disappointing, frankly. The burger and the fish and chips were both fine, though the tomatoes served as a garnish to the burger were almost green they were so unripe. The cheese sandwich was OK.The lamb and the Thai vegetable curry were both really meagre. There were a couple of nice rooms in the bar, with some comfy sofas. The establishment had a sort of shabby chic feel to it, but more shabby than chic. I can see how it would appeal for a drink on a summer or winter day, but the food is clearly pretty hit and miss, and a bit pricey.

Just dropped in on spec for a lunchtime meal. Excellent service, very friendly staff, delicious food and great value. As of October 2024 you'll get a good sized meal for about a tenner. Good choice of ales etc. Location is perfect for visiting the cathedral and city. If you need an EV charger there's one about 100 meters up the road.
