Restaurant at The Golden Lion in Hambleton

I have been here for the last 3 weeks on business for 2 nights a week, still 3 weeks to go 😀 Lovely welcome by everyone who has been on reception on all my visits, very helpful, friendly and they go that extra mile to help. The rooms I've stayed in so far are ( 2-10 and 31) which were very clean, cosy and well presented with everything you needed, Iron, hairdryer and tea and coffee facilities. The only little issue was the shower door rollers kept coming loose, just life cycle replacement needs attention at some point. I could not fault any of the cleaning at all and that's very rare for me due to being a cleaning trainer for the NHS, hotels, schools and offices for 20 years. I meet some of the cleaning first thing on the morning and they were also very polite and always smiling. The bar area was comfortable, clean, all the staff are friendly and the food in the restaurant-bar is excellent, large portions, presented beautifully and very tasty...... 😋 I didn't have the breakfast , so i can't comment on that... Thank you so much for making me feel welcome, especially when I'm here on my own. I will miss coming here when my business in Northallerton comes to an end 😊

I booked a table for five people in the carvery for Sunday lunch by telephone. On arrival I checked at reception to confirm our booking as I had no faith in the gentleman who took the booking;?yes we were booked in. At 13:25?we were waiting to be seated. They had took the wrong name down and the ladies at our table refused to leave. I spoke to the manager after refusing to wait for a table to become available, we were not offered complimentary drinks He said they didn’t do half our booking. I informed him I had one. He blamed reception, saying this had happened a few times. He apologised which I accepted and offered us a seat in the restaurant. I was very embarrassed for our friends. I went to the carvery. I was given the very scrag end of the beef which was fatty and chewy. The mashed potato wasn’t very good either. The rest of the food was good. This is the worst experience I have had at this hotel. A very poor performance on this occasion with only mediocre food but with a pricy price tag that my meal and booking experience monumentally failed to live up to. Very disappointed.

I stayed at the hotel which has to be the worse hotel I have ever stayed in. The hotel room was dirty, the carpet wasn’t cleaned and had crumbs, human nails and other dirty items on the floor. There was a packet of tablets left in the room, which was a family room. The surfaces and skirting board was extremely dusty and the bath didn’t drain so you showered in a dirty bath water. I politely complained to the owner of the hotel who said two weeks ago he would contact me back and didn’t bother. I would never ever recommend this hotel to anyone.

Went for lunch. They got the drinks order wrong - two drinks out of six incorrect. Long wait for food. Brought out one main meal completely wrong (vegetarian meal came with bacon??). Food was poor - bread bordered on stale. Chips very poor. On paying, we commented on poor food and lad on the till said words to the effect of "I know we have been serving poor chips lately". So, I guess if nothing else, they get kudos for honesty.

I really like the Golden Lion and the food is always good. So why the low score on the review? When we went recently we went to the bar to order and were told we had to pay upfront for food and drinks and couldn't set up a tab. At that point we didn't know if we would want dessert or extra drinks. When catching up with friends I don't want to be popping to the bar all the time. Why can't they take a copy of your card and then when you pay at the end they can destroy the details in front of you. This has really put us off going back. But the food was nice - soft drinks really expensive.

It had been many years since we visited the Golden Lion and after looking at their very varied menu, we decided to stop at this lovely hotel for a spot of lunch. The Golden Lion is very underrated, it has a nice ambience, lovely airy restaurant and nicely decorated. The staff are friendly and helpful and the food is superb. We had fish and chips and seafood tagliatelle - my husband’s fish and chips were beautiful, batter light and crispy, white whale of a fish and lovely homemade chips and homemade tartare sauce. He said it was one of the best F&C’s he has had. My seafood dish was equally superb, presentation was lovely, good selection of delicious fish and shellfish, topped off with a very tasty cream sauce. Portions very good, not over facing and not minuscule and excellent value for money. We will certainly be retuning to the Golden Lion, it is one of the nicest places in Northallerton for food and can highly recommend.

Food spot on.big portions.staff excellent.had one of the best gammon egg and chips.cooked to my perfection.every one enjoyed there meals.all commented how nice

Sunday carvery Nice selection & chef was a lovely gentleman. Food very nice well the chicken was. Beef too fatty. Turkey was nice and cracking excellent. Glazed veg delicious. Yorkshire pudding hard and dry. Bar service rubbish, the young lad who served us wasn't bothered, maybe he had a late night who knows. I asked for a full fat Pepsi and a pint of san Miguel and two dinners, he wasn't sure of the prices and we paid £48 for the whole thing, I then tasted the Pepsi and it was Pepsi max, I said I asked for full fat he said don't have that and I said if you had told me I would have something different, again he wasn't bothered and just carried on. Hence to say there was only 2 of us at the bar so it wasn't busy. I do love this place normally

After being told by numerous friends about the excellent food here, we came today and met with another couple who have been before. We all live quite a distance away from Northallerton but trust me it’s worth the travelling. We all had different meals, my husband had the gammon with all the trimmings. He said it was the best he’d ever had. I opted for the liver which was lovely, our friends had penne Arriabatta and chicken stir fry. I’ve just one niggle, the portions are huge and I struggled to eat all my mine. Service excellent, lovely environment, it feels like going back in time. Already booked a table as next month we are meeting family there…can’t wait.

The food is very good and the service is top notch. We went for dinner on a Friday. The restaurant wasn’t too busy but the bar area was. The service was really good. The menu is very varied and the 2 course menu is exceptional value.

Sunday carvery / £35 including two soft drinks Meat was nice, good selection of vegetables however everything a bit bland and yorkshires too thick

I meet my friends here a few times a week and I love 'The Lion'. The staff here are fab and the work really hard, and we have a great laugh. Pub is always clean, and food is great

We have eaten at The Golden Lion before and been extremely happy! Today we went for Sunday lunch and wow what a fabulous meal we had. I'm not usually a fan of buffets but I was certainly very happy with what we were served today! A choice of four meats all cooked to perfection and a brilliant selection of vegetables and Yorkshire pudding, everything was fresh and hot, being replenished regularly! The selection of starters and desserts was excellent and either 2 or 3 courses were amazingly good value! I would highly recommend the food here and will surely return to sample another treat! 😋

Food was ok but nothing amazing, it’s the service that shocked me! every member of staff looked miserable like they,d rather be else where, no friendly greeting just shown to a table that still had food under it. Table hadn’t been cleaned properly was very sticky, young man with ginger hair was just leaning on staff station drinking his can of red-bull clearly not conscious of the dirty tables and the woman with dark hair in ponytail is in desperate need of some customer service training.

Stayed here for an evening and the 2 ladies on reception were fantastic and went above and beyond to sort us a room and put a balloon and banner in there :) we missed breakfast but they still went all out to let us have a breakfast sandwich and a cup of coffee. Bed was comfy room was clean and staff were lovely would defo stay again

Called in for a meal when meeting some friends for a bitetoeat. Slightly dated interior which was quaint . All 4 meals were enjoyed and good value for money.

This restaurant was very good service and excellent food. Nothing too much trouble. One of my points IT WAS CLEAN. Spotless. Need i say more. Lunch was no fault and ended with the best sticky toffee pudding Ever. We are planning to go back. I want the Christmas brochure so we can plan ahead.

A party of 6 visited for lunch and everyone was raving about the meal. I had the pork dinner .The roast potatoes were just fantastic and worth travelling a few miles for.

We booked the hotel because we were travelling back from the Scottish Highlands, and we did not fancy a 10 hour drive. We booked their Yorkshire Explorer package, which seemed a reasonable price. We contacted the hotel to ask if we could change our booking to a day earlier, and this was done without fuss or complaint, in fact they offered us the same deal as we had booked. When we arrived, the welcome was warm and the checking in process was quick and fuss free. Our room was at the front of the hotel and had everything we expected, it was very clean and welcoming. The 'Set Menu' for the package had a good selection, although it could be better identified in the Menu. The food was excellent, and the portions are in the 'Generous' category. Now to the downside, our sleep was disturbed, primarily because the room was incredibly hot, even after we turned down the heater in the room. We had to open the window, and because we were at the front of the hotel it was noisy, so we had to close the window and did not have a good nights sleep, but because we changed our booking it was not the hotels fault and they had accommodated us at short notice. And so to Breakfast, we only had a light breakfast because the hotel had arranged a packed lunch. When we received the packed lunch, it was large to say the least. So in conclusion, Fantastic value, Great food, but let down by overly hot room. I would return but I would ask to stay in a room away from the front of the hotel.

On the last few occasions that we have visited we have been very disappointed with the food and the service here but decided to give it another try. We soon wished that we hadn't! On arrival there was no staff to seat us so we found a table and sat waiting to be served, we waited and we waited. Eventually I approached the Receptionist where I was met with a member of staff who rolled her eyes at me as I asked to be served! After such an unwelcome greeting we decided not to order lunch and just ordered tea and teacakes. The waitress seemed more bothered about how short her skirt was than actually taking our order! I ordered two pots of tea and one very small what seemed to be a hot water pot arrived, we barely had half a cup of tea each! The tables were dirty as were the chairs that we had to sit on. This place is so dated and run down and staff are in desperate need of customer service training. We could not wait to leave. We tried to find a member of staff to take our payment but we unable to find anyone, tired of waiting we left our money on the table and made a desperate escape. We will never return to such an unwelcome and badly staffed establishment!

Feeling as though I had been given a ‘get out of jail free’ card, last Saturday I made my way to Northallerton and The Golden Lion for lunch. I was met by a pleasant and friendly receptionist, showing people to their well socially distanced, some pre-booked, tables. For myself, I hadn’t booked but was shown to a table and almost immediately attended by a young waiter who gave me the menu and asked what I’d like to drink. I ordered a white wine spritzer and the Stilton and Broccoli quiche with salad. He brought the wine and cutlery with salt and pepper shakers. So I waited…and waited….and waited. Eventually, my meal was served by a polite and more mature gentleman. I asked for a pepper mill. Now I have to say that, whilst service was abominably slow (not many people in and staff milling about doing whatever) that simple meal was delicious! The chips were the best I have tasted for years! They were crisp, soft and fluffy inside and actually tasted of potato! The quiche was beautiful too, the pastry crisp and short and the filling creamy and with subtle flavour - if I had any point to make it would maybe amount to a little more Stilton in it but that would be nit-picking. I finished the meal and the wine, expecting a waiter to confront me with a pudding menu. This did not happen. Staff milled about as before and took little notice of what was happening in the dining area. I finally caught someone’s attention and he asked me if I’d like a pudding or coffee…to which I replied that I didn’t have time now. I asked for the bill. I paid without tipping this time. Ordinarily I would’ve done. I’d have loved to tip the kitchen staff though. The improvement here, was simply because of the Covid situation. Table service is always preferred. However, if the waiting staff are not up to the job on a quiet day, maybe they need further training? I have to commend the chef and kitchen staff though. Thoroughly enjoyable meal. I shall be back, if only to see if there has been some improvement in the delivery by the waiting staff.

Stopped off with friends for a much needed drink after walking in the baking heat, we sat in the courtyard to the rear which was a great sun trap, however there were tables in the shade for those who prefer it. Service was good but late afternoon some staff went off & there appeared to be one very busy barman dealing with all orders, didn’t get his name but he did an incredible job of making sure everyone was served, he also shared with us the story of the well in the bar area that is certainly a talking point, really great location, good service & enjoyable visit.

Booked a Friday night stay, checked in to room 10, the room was incredibly hot and the radiator was boiling but boxed in so unable to control. The thermostat on the wall was at zero but very uncomfortable, tried to open the windows but they kept self closing and ended up wedging one open with a book, it was torrential rain outside and this was pouring in. Tried to call reception but the phone was broken so down 3 flights of stairs to ask if anything could be done. We also had no WiFi password so down the stairs again to be told by the girl on reception that she didn’t know what it was but would find out and call me, I explained the phone was broken but she tried calling and I/we couldn’t hear each other so down the stairs again to get the password. Had a bath but couldn’t drain the water (plug stuck) so down the stairs again to ask for assistance. The phone was replaced and then we went out. Upon in return the bath was empty but the room was like a furnace. We decided we couldn’t stay and went to reception to check out, the receptionist was surly with a couldn’t care less attitude, didn’t ask why we were leaving but did make the comment about the heating - ‘we can’t do anything about it’ no offer of another room or a fan, thoroughly disinterested took our money and we left. Terrible experience, wouldn’t stay again, they have lost long standing customers who lunched there twice a week, much better places to eat and stay in Northallerton.

Whilst on a visit to Northallerton we booked a table for lunch at The Golden Lion, on arrival we sanitised our hands checked in on the track and trace app as requested and then shown to a table. There's a great choice on the menu and we chose a Pork Tenderloin with all the trimmings and a Giant Yorkshire pudding filled with bacon strips, sliced sausage and a generous helping of Lamb's liver. We didn't have too long to wait before it arrived and it was delicious everything was tasty and hot and went down a treat, we shared a desert between us and that was lovely a lemon meringue pie with fruits all in all a perfect meal at a reasonable price 👍

Having always being satisfied here decided to go after lock down for my birthday. Table service fine by me. Main course beef was as tough as bulls lugs. I do not buy brisket never mind expect it to be served to me. Not good. Veg was luke warm. Sticky toffee pudding was not the same. All in all an expensive birthday lunch. Will have to improve to get my money again.

Really enjoyed the food but the evening was spoilt by the unusual approach to service. Firstly on arrival we felt as if we were putting the staff out when asking for a table on an empty-ish Monday night. At the end of the night we were accidentally double charged for our drinks - no harm done especially as we should have checked before using contactless! But unfortunately the staff made us feel as if it was our fault and I would never have felt that way in other equivalent establishments. Nice meal but left with a nasty after-taste on the last night of our holiday.

We booked a meal at this hotel on Sunday 13th Sept and found the food very nice and reasonably priced, however the bar service was a let down. We were escorted to the outside courtyard for drinks whilst waiting for our table. A waiter came and asked for our drinks order. Pint of J.Smiths ,pint of real ale, pint of Corrs light and half of lager and lime. We received the real ale and half lager and lime, but the Corrs light was a "HALF" and not a pint, and "NO" J. Smiths. If 4 people are sitting down why bring 3 drinks ?We questioned the waiter and he returned with, another half lager and lime and HALF of J. Smiths. He clearly needs to write it down in future.

The early bird menu has great choices, is good value, delicious food and amazing staff too! Well worth a visit

Stopped off on spur of moment returning home from York. Great service, great Covid procedures and wonderful food. Definitely will return and hopefully book a break in hotel soon.

Alway love coming here when visiting Northallerton. It’s our favourite place to eat , so much to choose from and every meal we have eaten here is absolutely delicious! Staff are very polite and friendly.

The early bird menu is excellent value for two courses and there`s a good choice of food. With eat out to help out it`s even better value too!

We have often eaten at the Golden Lion but this was our first visit to the restaurant since lockdown. I was impressed with their covid aware measures. They made sure our details were taken in case needed to contact, hand sanitiser was available, tables were well spaced, and there was a safe system in place for traffic flow. All of which are not so in some other places we have visited in Northallerton.Staff were all friendly and attentive to our needs. We didn't have to wait for long at all for service. The food was a high standard, as always. Thanks go to all the staff.

We came to the golden lion hotel has it’s always been busy with diners in the past and we wasn’t disappointed we didn’t think the place was dirty has some previous reviews have commented we ordered from the special lunch menu 2 roast beef and have to say it was plentiful 4 slices of thickly cut beef roast potatoes Yorkshire pudding and a dish each of freshly cooked vegetables served with a smile we also enjoyed homemade ginger sponge and custard and homemade chocolate tart with ice cream there’s plenty to choose on the menu something for everyone lovely friendly staff well worth the 50 miles drive

I have been shielding for 16 weeks and my family felt I needed to leave he house and experience this new world we are living in. We had a trip to Northallerton and all was well for an hour or so then unfortunately I had a panic attack. The closest place to me was the Golden Lion. I dashed inside feeling silly and embarrassed to be greeted by lovely understanding staff. The hotel was busy but this didn't matter. Staff showed me to the bathroom, offered me a chair and a glass of iced water. They told me to take my time and collect my thought. Staff came back twice to check i was o.k. and did i need anything. This all happened during a busy lunch time service. Normally unless you are a guest or dining in hotels or restaurant's they would not entertain you. This absolutely was not the case at The Golden Lion.

We came here for dinner and after a good experience first time I was shocked as we were sat waiting 20 minutes just to have our drinks order taken and as it was a Monday and not busy we thought it was unacceptable, the staff didn't seem to know what they were doing with some just stood staring into space, the place where we got sat looked dirty and to be honest the whole dining area could do with decorating, the only good thing that saved a one star was the food which we thought was very good and large portions

We have been eating at the Golden Lion for years, before we even moved to Northallerton, always perfect. Until last night (Sat 29th Feb). We walked in and immediately the place was scruffy and very dirty. Dead flowers that have been dead for months all along the windowcill, the brass on front of bar hasnt been cleaned in months floor filthy, all young staff, not one of them smiled all evening. The worst thing was the food, my husband always ordered the same starter mixed for one - potato skins, onion rings etc. always delicious and not a drop of grease - until last night - swimming in grease. My main of duo of sole came the fish wasnt cooked properly, the fondont potato was raw, my husbands fish pie tasted horrible. I returned mine and had it taken off the bill - my husband ate some of his so we paid for that. I hear rumours it is supposed to be closing down, if that is true obvious the owners have stopped caring about it - if last night is anything to go by they need to close down now - or hand it over to someone who cares about it. What a shame to let such a lovely place go to rack and ruin.

Once again we were satisfied with our Sunday lunch. Food was very hot, I had the chicken in a mushroom sauce, very good, and mum had the turkey very tasty and tender. Veg are all good and hot here, as is large help yourself bowls of gravy HOT.

I booked in for early doors meal with 3 friends, a couple of my friends were running late so we were concerned we would miss the deal, but the staff reassured us that it would all be absolutely fine, they would honour for us.The food was lovely as usual, the staff attentive, we love the fact that we are never hurried away after our meal, would definitely recommend!

Extremely friendly staff, lovely spacious room, very quiet - a lovely place to stay. We had to postpone our stay at late notice and the hotel staff were very accomodating - we even got an upgrade! Thank you very much.

Have not been here for years but walking around the market in the sunshine just spotted it. Very relaxed atmosphere, nice food and lovely coffee. They told me they do breakfastso will be back soon for that. Lovely staff. Extensive menu and really enjoyed it.Did not stay, just ad lunch.

Arrived at around 2:40pm looking for a bite to eat and drinks. The kitchen had closed but they were able to offer cold sandwiches and toasted tea cakes. We ordered and paid for 3 lots of sandwiches and 3 tea cakes plus drinks. The waiter then came back and said that they only had 2 tea cakes left so we ordered a scone instead. The tea cakes and scones duly arrived but no sandwiches. After 10-15 mins I asked where the sandwiches were and they apologised and 2 arrived. I asked again for the final sandwich and it finally arrived 5-10 mins later. Food ok, nice filling but bread a little tired. Then I had to ask the waiter for cutlery. As you can imagine, it was not a great experience having to chase twice for food that we had paid for. I went to speak to reception about our experience and was asked to email the hotel and we would be compensated with vouchers. As we were not local, vouchers were not really helpful. Whilst half our party were leaving, half remained to have another drink and I explained this to the receptionist as I thought they may alternatively offer a drink on the house. The remaining party stayed another hour and ordered a couple of rounds of drinks but the receptionist never appeared at their table. In addition, the dirty plates remained unmoved at the table. I am writing this as customer service is everything and can make or break an eating experience. In this case it was very unsatisfactory.

Popped into this busy hotel for lunch. It was heaving, obviously a popular choice for locals and visitors. The menu is quite traditional with a good selection of light bites and main meals. The food was great and the service was excellent. Worth a try.

Service from one waitress especially was very poor. She told us that apricot stuffing wasn’t on the menu, to which I showed her it was on the days special turkey dinner. ShePromptly took the menu away and said it was the wrong menu she continued to tell me that turkey dinner wasn’t originally on the menu that day but due to them being busy they decided to offer it, but still no stuffing. We then asked for the bill and 3 items had been added to our bill which we hadn’t ordered. Therefore we had to request it be removed. I was asked if I wanted more roast potatoes instead, to which I felt insulted. My complaint was made on paying the bill and they hoped it didn’t put me off going back again. Definately not going back.

Lovely place over priced, staff some are nice but other just were there for the money, dissapointed as we was looking forward to it.

Had the carvery as that was all that was on offer.SOme of the staff seem to be a bit troubled that we hadnt booked yet there was loads of spare seats.

An organised Christmas dinner. Starter was well presented but the main, a turkey dinner, was abysmal. The veg was so undercooked it was hard to cut and inedible. The turkey was OK. Christmas pudding was OK. Very disappointed.

A confirmed regular here and yet again it was faultless. The meat is well cooked and sliced to perfection. The veg are plentiful and hot, and loads of HOT GRAVY. Desert was scrummy, lemon roulade, I was FULL.

Excellent service and very good food at reasonable prices. Been here for evening dinner and lunch time snack. Equally as good

Called for lunch and spotted roasts on the specials at £8. We had the beef and the pork served with amazing yorkies and veg. Great service, served on hot plates, fantastic. Will call again when in the area.

1st time to Northallerton tracing mums birth place, so thought wed try the food while we were here. NOT disappointed. Efficient staff, Quality food Comfy place to eat and stay Value for money

This restaurant/hotel just delivered another beautiful served lunch. The meat was very tender and together with all the wonderful choice of vegetables it just delivered yet again. Sweets are very broad choice and again not overcharged, was tasty and a perfect end to a perfect meal.

Visited today as part of a trip from the great US of A with my equally hot friend.. First of all what a great town Northallerton appears to be which was hosting some kind of bicycling event.. so far so good.. But then it goes down hill.. Outside table service was non existent, all the female staff seemed to be too busy ogiling the young fit cyclist (with highlights) that I think was taking his 2 elderly uncles for a bike ride. Totally unprofessional service, for sure we wont be going back.

We ate here on two consecutive nights and were extremely satisfied with all the food that we had. Portions are generous and the staff very pleasant.

2nd visit for lunch. .shopping trip to Northallerton followed by a lunch time roast dinner. .we had the Beef and Turkey. ....just fantastic food with very polite staff. ..will visit again. .

Yes It’s a bit dated inside but you will always get freshly cooked food at great value for money. The choice is amazing and the early bird menu is fantastic value for money

Having made many good reviews about this very good and well established establishment, but unfortunately it did not come to the same high standard. The beef I do not know about eating it, I could not cut it. So it was left on the side of my plate. Fiona did apologise but that was it. The veg were very well cooked and hot, ps I loved the mash with cheese and chives, very tasty.

We had an early meal as we were attending a meeting. Two courses for £12.50 but we paid £2 extra for a steak main course plus a starter. Extremely good value and very well presented. We enjoyed it so much that we had a meal from a different menu on the second evening.

Booked a table for dinner on a Friday evening in this old coaching inn. Started in the large bar where there was a good selection of ales on tap. Dining room was starting to fill up. Staff were very good looking after the customers and there was a convivial atmosphere. There are several menus/options so definitely something for all tastes. We ordered a risotto, a tagliatelle and a salmon teriyaki. All were freshly prepared, tasty and hot. We just about had room for a couple of chocolate sundaes for dessert which were to die for. Very pleasant evening at a reasonable price.

I stayed at this hotel recently with my wife and our daughter and her partner so booked two rooms The man ( John ) on reception was very friendly and efficient which gave us a great first impression Both rooms were a good size and comfortable if a little dated which wasn’t a problem as it was reasonably priced at £72 per room for bed & breakfast and they do have an ongoing programme to update the old historical building

We had lunch with friends the food was really lovely and we will go again next week. We were all very pleased with the food and the service and the atmosphere.

Right in the town centre and surrounded by a good selection of shops , pubs and cafes. Well appointed rooms and bars , good inexpensive food . A good place to stay

Dine here fairly often and have to say the food is very good at reasonable prices.

I visited with my elderly Mother having booked a table for Sunday lunch. The staff were welcoming, professional and most helpful. The restaurant manager kindly helped Mum along the carvery and carried her plate back to the table. The food was excellent, piping hot and good selection of meat and vegetables. A most enjoyable visit.

Came today and ordered the fish & chips. I asked for large but the lady said they were massive so got the small. Well when they came they were massive!!! Couldn’t even finish them. They were delicious!! Crispy batter and fresh fish xx

We had a goats cheese salad and a prawn and salmon salad, The portion size and quality were very good. Very reasonable price, definitely recommend.

Had a wonderful visit with my parents and five month old, who is too little to sit independently in a high chair yet. Staff were attentive, kind and considerate. I breast-fed in the main lounge with no eye-rolling or comment, so was made to feel very welcome. The food was also excellent, and I was impressed by the range of options including daily specials. Would definitely recommend.

A few weeks ago came here for tea with a few family members, food was lovely, very generous portions and tasted amazing. Great and happy service (Fiona I think her name was).

We were staying locally and decided to 'go up market' and have dinner in this known well established hotel, the food quality was excellent, service a little slow (they were short staffed) and the Pinot Grigo overpriced and average quality. Very well populated restaurant and bar.

Having noticed the price increase of the early bird menu, there was nothing that we fancied so chose from the other menu. I chose Sweet and Sour Chicken, on a bed of egg noodles and mixed vegetables. I found 1 piece of aubergine and I think 2 pieces of red pepper, with an over facing amount of raw red onions. The sauce well was very scarce and the chicken well, it was just a cut chicken fillet sliced on top. That was it. The amount of time we had to wait I thought it was going to be top notch, just the opposite, very average.

We stayed here overnight to attend a Lions function in the Mowbray Suite.

Called in for a quick bite and coffee. The place is spotless and immaculately presented. The food was very tasty, with good sized portions. My favorite bit though, was the staff. Lovely, polite and very friendly. And very smart in their uniforms. They and the hotel are a credit to George & Greta.

We regularly visit the Golden Lion,once very couple of weeks, the Party menu offers excellent value and taste but our favorite items are the steaks, we have eaten in many restaurants including some high end establishments but the 'T bone' and fillets here are exceptional in both flavour and value, the chef cooks to perfection !.

We always have very good food, very good service when we lunch at the Golden Lion, Northallerton. Great venue and efficient, pleasant service.

Me and my family always visit The Golden Lion everytime we come to Northallerton for the day. Normally it's just for a drink in the cosy and welcoming bar. Although the last couple of times we have been in the restaurant for a meal - which was highly recommended and it didn't disappoint! Lovely homemade food, we all got two courses off the early bird menu before 5oclock, great value for money. Great atmosphere, the staff are so friendly and can't do enough for you! Will be back soon that's for sure. Would highly recommend to anyone next visiting Northallerton

We stopped overnight at the Golden Lion on Friday 22nd February 2019. The room was fabulous very spacious. We had the two course menu at 18.00 wife had mussels in sauce I had black pudding scotch egg and we both had the chicken breast on bed of mash potato with veg and gravy the food was exceptional and the large glass of wine was like a bucket of wine and at a good price, and the breakfast was first class !!!!! would recommend this Hotel to anyone. AND A BIG THANK YOU TO THE HARD WORKING STAFF . Thank you the Golden Lion Hotel.

Recommended by a friend so we went for a Sunday carvery. Excellent meal friendly staff and a lovely pint of the, every disappearing from North Yorkshire, Camerons Strongarm. Highly recommended.

Lovely place. Very retro. Substantial menu. Excellent food. Staff were exceptionally helpful and polite. We arrived for lunch 20 minutes before they were due to close but we were welcomed with open arms. Must try restaurant fir an evening.

Had a one night stay here. We have been to Northallerton a few times on shopping days out. But this was our first overnight stay. The location is great. Right in the centre of the town. Good parking in a large car park to the rear of the hotel. The hotel was bigger than I originally thought. As I had only seen the frontage before. At reception Kimmy welcomed us and was very pleasant and helpful. I wish I’d researched this place first(unlike me I didn’t this time) If I had I would have asked for a room on a lower floor with less steps for my partner to climb. The only negative I will give this place. As no lift. Still the place was lovely and staff great. Food good as we had our lunch here and breakfast. Bar stocks some good beers!!!. Also a feature in there is the glass capped well you can walk over. Remnant of the past. Room (15 ours) was front of house and looked onto the high street. Surprisingly quiet though. Bath had a overhead shower but this was controlled via the taps. Little bit more fiddly but worked well.

The lamb was cooked to perfection, the roast beef was also very tender and tasty. The veg were all tasty and well presented and plenty. Lovely hot gravy. It was superb. I finished off with warm treacle torte served with honeycomb ice cream, it was totally a new idea, I loved. Just a suggestion. Have you ever thought of an assiette of desserts? That is a selection of your deserts but not as big . More of a taster for the future. Just a suggestion. Otherwise, excellent service, well satisfied, need I say more. I have booked for Mothering Sunday March 31st at !2 noon, first sitting as it is getting booked up for the two sittings. BOOK EARLY OR STAY AT HOME.

Lovely surroundings, smart, pleasant staff, great food and really good value for money. (Where else in Northallerton are you able to buy a well kept pint of beer for £3.40?). The restaurant was busy but the service was still great. Would eat here more often if we lived in Northallerton. Thanks to all concerned for a lovely experience.

We attended a dinner for about 50 people. We had our own room and pre-ordered. Food was good, hot and plentiful. Service was quick, efficient and friendly. A good venue.

Been here a few times now and the food is consistently good, steaks of good quality meat, starters of warm salad and scotch egg very nice, we also had the Hake as a main good, also service was good if you are visiting the town I would recommend here first.

Yet again another great christmas day lunch.Well prepared and served.A big thank you to all staff the chefs all kitchen staff the waiters and waitresses ,the bar staff for all your hard work that made the day perfect.Nothing was to much trouble for you.

Once again we had the pleasure of having Sunday lunch here. It was superb. The staff are 1st class. Nothing is too much trouble. Highly recommended this establishment. You will not be disappointed. Book early.

Had lunch here. Very attentive team of waiters. Restaurant decor is "tired" but everything was clean. We had a selection of baguettes all very good and good value. We were surprised how busy it was and there seemed to be several regulars. If you are looking for lunch and want to take your time enjoying it the Golden Lion might be for you.

Always good here especially at Christmas, it's a right nice atmosphere here to nice classy place even for a quick drink or chilled coffee in the front lounge

We had two dinners and breakfasts, all four did not disappoint. Friends that joined us for dinner said this was the best around. Would dispute that.

We ordered two cups of coffee at the lounge bar after waiting for someone to attend to us. One cup arrived served by a man who had a jug of milk in his other hand. I assumed that my coffee would then follow but instead the waiter disappeared! Another visit to the bar resulted in my coffee eventually arriving. I never realised that ordering two cups of coffee could be so difficult!

Have never been in this pub / hotel before. We rand at short notice to cater for Sunday lunch for a large mixed family group.

Visited on a Tuesday lunchtime, they were busy, aroma of roast beef was lovely. Super friendly staff. Five main course dishes all really lovely, obviously freshly prepared with care. Good value for money compared to other pub restaurants. Will be back.

We visited this hotel last week for a quick lunch, which was a last minute choice. We found the menu was fairly extensive with the usual choice of 'pub grub'. I had lasagne with chips and my wife has spaghetti bolognaise. The portions were a good size and served hot, great value for very reasonable prices. Average prices were about £8.00 or so.

I've eaten here several times during the week but never had Sunday dinner. Went today and it was delicious. I chose pork which was lovely and tender. There were huge Yorkie Puddings and then a selection of veg - carrot and swede mash, cauliflower cheese, roasties, mashed potato, peas and parsnips. The gravy was nice and thick and I cleared my plate. 2 of our party had dessert which I sampled a bit of and it was yummy. Would definitely return on a Sunday.

We called into The Golden Lion, quite by accident yesterday as many places to eat in Northallerton were closed. I'm so glad that we did. Myself, my adult son and my elderly father all had a lovely meal with drinks for well under £30 [rare these days].

We went to the Golden Lion for lunch last Sunday. It was busy but the staff were very good especially Ashley. There was great choices and the carvery was excellent. Beef was a trifle tough. We were very impressed.

We usually go to the lion about once a month with family. There’s always a nice selection of roast meats, and plenty of different vegetables to choose. A very tasty lunch in a lovely traditional setting. Looking forward to next time!

We came here twice last week as a family of four whilst on holiday in Osmotherley. It had a lovely cosy atmosphere with candles on the tables and as the evenings were quite chilly it was a lovely place to be. The food was very good with lots of choice, the wine and beer also. Once again, very tasty Sunday lunch. All roasts and alternatives were plentiful and always well served. the veg were very hot and again faultless. The sweets were very good also, it was like stepping back in time for taste. Once again this establishment met my expectations and was very pleased we had returned again.
