The food was really good but so expensive. A fillet (which was brilliant) plus veg and potatoes at nearly £50 is a ridiculous price to pay. Won’t be eating there again at these silly prices. They really do need a price review if they wish to keep the restaurant open in the near future!

A special celebratory occasion, mentioned when booking. On arrival, a very limited lunch menu of 4 options. Water jug had no ice or lemon. When we asked for the dessert menu we were told there were no desserts!! Didn't bother to stop for coffee....so disappointed.

Booked to celebrate my mums 80th birthday. Our table was in the path of guests attending a wedding reception so felt like we were in a drafty corridor. My daughter is heavily pregnant so asked for her burger to be cooked through. When it arrived pink she asked for it to be cooked a little more - by the time it arrived back at the table everyone had finished their meal (and the new burger was still pink inside). The rest of the food was good - but nothing special. Service was not great - I had to go to find someone on several occasions. Young serving staff were awkward and seemed uncomfortable and inexperienced. It felt as though we had been forgotten about. We were compensated for a very disappointing night but the evening was ruined. There was zero atmosphere - even though there was an open fire it was just embers as it was left to go out (it was a cold night and some of us were chilly). Maybe weddings and afternoon tea events are where the attention is given? I live within walking distance but won’t be back which is such a shame.

Disappointed. We met friends here for a meal. The drinks were very expensive, a small bottle of water and a small Pimms, with no fruit, cost £10. The menu was quite limited. I chose the fish and chips, big mistake. The fish was fine, but the batter was awful under cooked, it was very pale and soggy inside. I could not complain as the meal was being paid for by our friends. The saving grace were the staff who were a delight.

Not our first meal here but our first gluten-free afternoon tea and we felt quite disappointed. We'd booked the 60th anniversary afternoon tea online but that's not what we were served. Not sure if there was some mistake, whether I should have specified it again on being seated or whether they couldn't make it gluten-free? The sandwiches and scones were nice but the sweet offerings were average - flapjack, millionaires slice, chocolate crispie and 2 small buns. No cake slices or anything that really helped us feel we were celebrating the hotel’s anniversary or the coronation. Definitely feel the gluten-free options need to be looked at. Unlikely to return for afternoon tea.

As we were guests staying the night on their seasonal break package we had booked a table in the restaurant for dinner. On arrival we were given a table near a door which wasn’t great but we thought we would give it a go having our order taken we eagerly awaited a lovely candle lit dinner, however within a few minutes there came what seemed like an endless procession of adults children and even dogs traipsing through past our table through the nearby door !! To get to a function room above this went on for some time. We then asked to be moved to another table which they politely obliged. We just both had the fillet steak which came with no accompaniments the chips and sauces were extra plus the steaks were a little over cooked so all in all a unusual evening.

We celebrated our ruby wedding anniversary at Holdsworth house on the 18th November 2022. The venue was stunning with beautiful Christmas trees and tasteful decorations. We had a drinks reception and a four course meal accompanied by a harpist. The food was superb and the staff led by Ryan were exceptionally polite and helpful all evening. A wonderful evening was had by all who attend. I can highly recommend Holdsworth house as a venue.

Lived nearby for years but never been so decided to go for our wedding anniversary. Got a surprise when we asked what the £23 + steak came with and was told nothing. A portion of chips and a small green salad was £7 extra. The fries that came with the other meal were full of ones with black bits and the “salad” was 2 razor blade thin pieces of tomato, 2 little gem lettuce leaves and 2 slivers of gherkin. The service was good but the value for money was very poor. Holdsworth House has always had a good reputation in the area until recently but the food badly lets it down. In our opinion it is overpriced for the quality of food that is served. There is another pub/restaurant a mile away which is absolutely superb value and we should have gone there as we have been at least once a month for the past 6 months and have never had a bad meal.

My wife received a £50 voucher as a gift, as it was her birthday we decided to book a table as a treat, we made them aware there was a voucher to be used. The location is close to our home and the building looks really interesting - this was the high point of the visit! We booked the table for 6.30pm, we arrived on time and were shown to our table by a member of the restaurant staff whilst the other three working were just chatting away. There was one other couple already seated, so it was hardly busy. We were given the menus to look over for a few minutes. Drinks were ordered - a bottle of wine & a pint. The wine arrived whilst I was away from the table, I waited about 10 minutes, then I got the attention of one of the staff to point out the missing drink. We ordered food from the A La Carte menu, my wife eats fish, but not meat, so she chose the scallops but specifically asked for the parma ham not to be included. I ordered soup. When the starters arrived the scallops had the ham on the plate - apologies were forthcoming, but really, is it that hard to get a simple order right!? When it arrived correctly my wife said the scallops were tasty, but the combination on the plate did not compliment them. The soup was just OK (too sweet). I had rump steak for main and my wife the halibut fillet. The steak was OK, nothing special. The halibut lacked any taste. We had had enough and just wanted to leave so we asked for the bill. When the bill came the £50 voucher had not been deducted - again how hard is it!? I expressed how disappointed I was with the service - more apologies. In summary, this is a lovely building but on our experience, everything is over-priced and trying to be fancy rather than getting the basics right. I mean £25 for a bottle of 11% white wine which you could probably pick up at a local supermarket for about £4! Not good!

My husband had the chicken with black pudding mash which was lovely and creamy and very moreish. We didn’t bother with puddings this time, but we will on another visit. As a small group tour, we stayed at Holdsworth House and had dinner and breakfast. We had a prearranged set menu for dinner. The highlight of the dinner was a Tomato and Mozzarella tart, deliciously savory. The main plate was Braised beef with rosemary roasted potatoes and carrots: it was well prepared, but nothing special. The dessert, Eton Mess, was a disappointment. While it had all the components of Eton Mess, the large solid meringue dominated with the fruit and whipped cream on top. Eton Mess should be more of a mess, with the components mixed up and complementing each other.Breakfast was delightful, with a buffet of cereals, fruits, and pastries, as well as a menu of hot offerings. My Eggs Benedict was great.

Visited with my family for afternoon tea. Being the only one out of the party of 6 with food allergies I did not feel like I was missing out. I was very impressed with the quality of my afternoon tea considering I have multiple allergies including gluten and lactose. A lot of effort had obviously gone into it. As you get with the ‘normal’ afternoon tea I had 4 different finger sandwiches, 4 different sweet treats (which included a delicious chocolate and orange tart) and 2 scones. Plenty of food!Equally, there were lots of favourable comments from the other members of the party. We were all impressed by the food, ambience and the staff.I would definitely recommend this place to anyone, especially if you are gluten free. Probably best to let them know any allergies in advance when booking.

We booked the tasting menu for Saturday evening as it was our 45th wedding anniversary. We had the tasting menu a few years ago with some friends and enjoyed it. It was a different matter this time. First of all we were unable to have a drink at the bar as there was a wedding party in there. We did have a gin and tonic at the table but then were rushed into the meal before we had finished the aperitif. The first three courses were fine however the dessert was tasteless and frozen. The cheese course was next; we could choose 2 cheeses each out of seven. However there was no list of the cheeses and when we asked what a particular cheese was like the waiter was unable to tell us. We eventually ordered our cheeses and they came presented on a slate with two lots of biscuits, a number of what looked like ‘cheddars’ and some which looked like a Jacobs mixture. With a menu that cost this much I would have thought we might expect some homemade biscuits. The meal concluded with petit fours which again were not up to scratch.

Well, it was absolutely beautiful, the surroundings are so warm and cosy and the cakes were delicious. The service is second to none, you really are made to feel so special. Even our screaming 18 month old son was made to feel welcome! We were given a choice of gins for our gin and tonic accompaniment, which was beautiful, and an array of teas too. I only wish we could have relaxed a bit longer but a baby always prevents this! Next time we will endeavour to get a babysitter and enjoy our surroundings a bit longer! We went for afternoon tea, which all looked fantastic and the prosecco was really delicious. I had the gluten free/vegan option which I was a little underwhelmed by. Some of the cakes were from the same sponge but only slightly altered it seemed so wasn’t hugely varied. It needs updating, vegan and gluten free food is so much more part of our restaurant culture so it seems they are missing a trick by not being hugely creative with it. My friend really enjoyed the non vegan gluteness more traditional version, and overall a great experience.

The hotel management do their best to avoid conflict between wedding party and restaurant guests but inevitably from time to time individual wedding guests choose to ignore 'the rules' and cut through the restaurant which is inconsiderate but does not detract from the overall ambiance of the historic multi room dining area .

The special summer gin afternoon tea was wonderful - our only regret was that we failed to bring a bag for all the good things which we could not manage at the time. Four hours later we were just about able to manage a light dinner; the turbot was excellent but the skin of the bream had not been crisped up. We stayed for 3 nights as it was close to an event we wanted to go to. It is a tranquil venue close to the centre of Halifax. A lovely old house with more recent additions, cosy and comfortable. Our room was a standard double which was pleasantly furnished, slightly tight on wardrobe space but had everything we needed. It was quiet despite their being a wedding in the hotel, we didn't hear any noise from evening entertainment or anything like that. Lovely panelled restaurant, comfortable chairs, very cosy, log fires everywhere, pleasant service, food was good, mainly comfort type food in a modern style - but it was end March so that's what we needed. Very good, friendly and helpful reception staff. Fantastic breakfast staff, the lady allowed us to have our breakfast early as we had to get a taxi to our event, nothing was too much trouble. Friends and I recently spent a couple of nights at Holdsworth House, the accommodation was good as was the food & the staff were lovely. They were also very kind to the guide dog we had with us. I would recommend Holdsworth House.

A bit strange on arrival, no one around and the staff that were ignored us! but we had a lovely table in a lovely restaurant with good food, a bit strange in my opinion that they started afternoon teas at 1pm so you had lunch and tea drinkers being served at the same time! and the one member of staff in the dining room coped well. We will return and try it again.

I bought a groupon steak voucher. I don't usually buy them but I so wanted to visit to Holdsworth house. It's so spectacular. I left it so long it was actually the final date on the voucher. My son piped up he wanted to join us so I had to call and ask for a vegan meal and it was not a problem. I loved, loved, loved the place. The waiter was lovely and all the staff too. The food was fabulous. Gorgeous steak with a lovely peppercorn sauce. I'd planned on a dessert but I was too full. The vegan meal was thoroughly enjoyed too. Fantastic visit to fabulous old building.

We had afternoon tea this weekend at Holdsworth House. The sandwiches were so fresh and beautifully presented. The chocolate brownie was the best ever tasted! The scones were lighter than air!! It was everything I had expected and more.

Atmospheric historic house, with plenty of walks in the countryside near by. The staff can't do enough to help and advise you. And the food in the restaurant is lovely. And gin lovers will like the selection at the bar. Oh, and some vegetarian selections at breakfast too.

A large group of work colleagues staying at the hotel decided to dine in rather than venture out for food, and we were glad we did.The menu has a varied choice of food, even catering for vegetarians, and everybody agreed that their particular choice was delicious. All the staff were helpful and extremely friendly, food service was good - no lengthy waits for any of the courses, the ice cream to finish was delicious with a large selection of flavours and highly recommended

Dinner was excellent and the gin selection very interesting! The best cream tea we have had for a long time - scones lovely and light. Looking forwards to a return visit!!

We came here for a nights' treat with friends. We only come from Leeds and Halifax is not a scenic place, but it was a magically experience and worth the trip. The old, panelled rooms are steeped in history with mullioned windows, interesting paintings and ornaments. The whole character is delightful. There is a formal garden and charming courtyard as well. Our room was more modern and very comfortable. Great shower. The staff were excellent, food great but I am glad I was on a deal! We had an excellent cream tea on arrival, all good. Would love to go back.

I booked for 2 nights on the recommendation of previous reviews and was not disappointed. On arrival we were offered a welcome drink and asked if there was anything we needed, nothing seemed to much trouble. The room was very nice and well appointed with everything you might need to make our stay more comfortable. We reserved a table to dine at 8 o'clock, on arrival at the dinning room we were met by a very nice young man, we decided to have a drink in the bar before going into the dinning room. We were told that the hotel had been closed for the last few days for maintenance during the post Christmas season and had only reopened that day.Although they were nearly fully booked on Saturday we were one of two couples staying Friday and the only couple dinning. I would normally be hesitant about dinning on our own but the young man made us feel totally at ease, he was attentive but not intrusive. The menu was new and we were the first customers to experience it, I would highly recommend the Lamb it was very succulent and beautifully presented. We also tasted the bar menu the following evening and was pleased it was of the same standard and the service was the same standard as the dinning room. All the staff were very warm and welcoming and helped to make our stay one we will remember, I would not hesitate in recommending this hotel to friends and family.Thank you Holdsworth House.

Great ambience and good food well cooked but shocked at the tiny portion of dry white halibut, white potato and white salsify . Looked not appealing at all too me, more like hospital food ( ordered for mum who wanted fish) Queried on the bill as I had read it as £17.50 but seemed it was £27.50 - queried when I left after paying at reception but not surprisingly, have heard nothing from themMay stay again bit will NOT eat in their restaurant again /

My husband and I have just had the most lovely meal and experience at Holdsworth house restaurant. On arrival we were taken to our table and asked if we were having a nice day by a lovely young man in a suit. I said we were as it was a special day for us and we were celebrating our 45th wedding anniversary. After taking our order he came back with a complimentary glass of champagne for us which we thought was a lovely gesture. When our sweet arrived which was on a slate , just across the top of the slate the chef had written happy anniversary which we thought was so thoughtful. But it didnt end there, when the bill came we noticed that the drinks we had ordered and our sweets had not been put on the bill ,when we queried this as we went to pay the bill the young man said it was ok the wine and the sweets were an anniversary present from Holdsworth house.Well I was so touched by this that I just had to write this review to say what a wonderful evening we had and the food was superb. We will certainly go back again and would just like to say thankyou to all the staff for making our wedding anniversary so special. Thankyou everyone you are one very special team of people.

Lovely afternoon had, with excellent food there wasn't anything that was too much trouble, the lady that served us(sorry forgotten her name)was an asset to the hotel and offered a doggy bag as too much to finish, the room we were in was very Christmasy with the log fire roaring.

Visited this wonderful old house for a night away with my partner. We wanted to chill out and eat delicious food and Holdsworth House delivered! Our room was comfortable and clean. The bed was huge which is always a bonus! It was lovely to see soaps and creams by The White Company and plenty of tea/coffee. Our evening meal was the star of the show. I had scallops, duck and fruit crumble. My partner had risotto, pork 3 ways and treacle sponge. The pork dish was unbelievable! The service throughout the evening was excellent despite the restaurant being full, mostly with big parties. Special thanks to Rhiannon; she delivered service with a smile and we later found out it was her first shift! Thanks for a lovely break.

Lovely staff, good food, comfortable room. Nothing negative about the hotel and the facilities. However, wedding guests needed more information. The guest bar was closed before the wedding ceremony commenced but guests were not informed so some guests were drinking while others (my group) were refused. After the meal the band, bar and snacks/tea/coffee were all clustered together so guests were skirting past the keyboard player to get a drink or get a coffee. No great problem but not ideal. There was no information on the location of the toilets which were actually upstairs.. On going to the original bar I was informed it was not open to wedding guests. Why? I was also a resident so why couldn't I buy a drink in the bar which was used before the ceremony? After the wedding reception this bar was open again. The gates from the reception area to the main hotel were then locked. I can understand why but guests were trying to get to toilets and back to their rooms but couldn't. It was also a cold, wet night so, although I found out later there was an indoor route back to the rooms, the only obvious way was to go outside. Did all this detract form the enjoyment of the evening? Not really but there's room for improvement. No real complaints but think more about what information the guests need. Two questions down from here the survey asks 'were you here for...' but I can only select one. I was at the hotel for dinner and breakfast but can't enter both on the survey form

We had wanted to visit here for some time as they have large signs up with what appear to be excellent deals, however once we asked about them we were told that they no longer have these offers (even though they put up the signs daily to entice you in). The food was mediocre and not worth half what we paid, It’s rare that I ever regret eating out but today was one of those days. We had multiple starters and mains, the starter chicken tikka was nice but the chicken tikka with the main was chewy and totally different. The chicken in the byriani was foul and I couldn’t eat it. I ordered chicken pakoras and at first I thought they were raw but there was something odd about them, a strange slimy yet chewy texture and they smelt and tasted awful, this was the first time in my life I’ve ever returned any food. The service was good and the chap was very friendly and attentive but right now I feel very sick just a few hours after eating. Chips and chapattis were nice. Naan and bhajis were doughy and undercooked. Next time we will stick to cafe passion, for the same price the food is many many times superior to this. My assumption is that this place’s bread and butter is from drunks after a night out, just like meenas was for me and my mates back in the late 90s

The food was stunning, as always, the chefs deserve a pay rise. What’s been a shame about the last couple of visits is that the staff generally seem disinterested, the service is poor, little to no enquiring for drinks, refills, asking when we sit down etc. The guy (possibly owner) is unfriendly to those whose face doesn’t seem to fit… he seems to take great interest in some customers but then others is just not bothered. The bathrooms were pretty vile, our table very sticky too, both surely easily remedied. I’m not sure what’s happened these last couple of visits, it’s just like something has changed. Thankfully the food is, as always, a true delight. I won’t rush to return, but if I did then I’d maybe give a takeaway a try.
